i like to tell people about this all the time, saying that Pikachu means "Spark-mouse" (basically)
Lmao that's right 🤣
Tbf, it would be more "bzzt-squeak" literally
I call him lightning rat because it feels more cool
no? more like electric squeak
@@blureyes106 That’s what I was thinking. You can’t translate an onomatopoeia into the thing that makes the sound lmao.
Clever! Could you cover more Pokemon names and their meanings please? I’m interested to know what Primarina’s name in Japanese means (アシレーヌ)
The name is derived from asika(meaning sea lion) + laine (French for queen). It is also thought that Sirene (French for mermaid) may be one of the origins of the name.
@@user-rh6zi4hl8uLittle correction here: Queen is french is "Reine". Laine is "Wool".
And now I am leaving you. Au revoir ! 🇫🇷
@@user-rh6zi4hl8u Thank you!!
@@anthonyr.9605 Thank you too :>
Darkrai is dark(absence of light) + Rai(japanese for dark)
It’s said that the meaning of the name was added after the character was made.
Originally, the designer Atsuko Nishida was asked to design an electric type Pokemon. At the time, the motif wasn’t really specified so Atsuko Nishida drew a character inspired by squirrel. She then named it “pika-chu”. “Pika” is for people to easily understand it’s an electric type Pokemon but “chu” was added just because it sounded nice.
When the Pokemon creator Satoshi Tajiri wrote the character descriptions, he changed it to a mouse because… “chu” is a mouse sound 🐭
Pikachu, I choose you!
Isn't it a kiss sound as well?
@@ginandromeda1618 it's the same sound

@@Omni0404probably with pikachu 😅
Ohh no wonder my friends called Pikachu a mouse XD
I mean... What else would a Pikachu be?
The Dex entry literally calls it the "Mouse Pokemon"
@@alemirdikson well idk
Also, pikachu's "pika pika" is a phrase that makes sense in japanese and means something like "very sparkling". similar repetitions happens with waku waku = so exciting (anya), fuwa fuwa = so fluffy (k-on), kira kira = glittering, kochi kochi = here here (literally that) and so on
ひかり(light)の語源は、電気や光る物のオノマトペである「ぴかぴか」です。
時代を経て、「ぴ」の音が「ひ」の音に変わりました。
Not only are you fluent in both Aigo and Nihongo, but you’re one of THE FEW people that can properly pronounce “onomatopoeia”!

Didn't know Pikachu is a mouse!
教えてくれてありがとう!
So Pickachu and Hello Kitty is like Tom and Jerry.
😂😂
Except hello kitty is a girl and not a cat. I just learned this recently. My whole life is a lie.
@@HalloweenLyn ???
@@gentrydean3789 A British girl named Kitty White. O_O
@Lee Haha interesting, I just read the wiki. Still a cat tho, unless you're talking about the American jazz singer.
I love your content. Makes learning Japanese more fun :)
There’s actually also a rodent called Pika, so the “pika” has a double meaning!
Not a rodent. Ochotonidae Princeps. More related to Leporidae (rabbits). Both are Lagomorphs. They also make hay.
Their habitat is primarily in high mountains above tree line. They make a sharp chirp that is very loud for their size. I've seen & heard many in the Rocky Mountain states of the United States. (I'm not a biologist, but I play one on RUclips.)
It has a triple meaning! Do not search for pika, in portugueses.
oh thank you for explaining!! when I was studying Japanese the other day I learned the onomatopoeia “pika” and this thought crossed my mind. It makes sense now!! Thank you!!
かみなりのおとがかわいいきこえるね。。。😆😆😆
Other onomatopoeias for thunder include "golo golo"😂
Koreans talking to English Speakers:
"마우스가 있습니다"
"wheres the fking train
I've been watching these videos, and I feel good about already knowing this one because I looked it up out of curiosity when I was a kid.

I just found this channel, but, I am slowly getting to enjoy this content. Thank you for these nice linguistic breakdowns. I hope you have a great day.
Ah! I always thought it was related to the animal called a “Pika”! Maybe it’s both haha
I once clicked on a stupid video where the title said that it would give advice in learning Japanese, and the video was just him saying that you shouldn't because he didn't have the guts to keep it up. I'm glad that we have someone who actually thinks about helping her audience instead of being such a coward who makes clickbait videos.
My mind just expanded. Crazy.
You uploaded on my birthday with an amazing video, cool 🙂
The way I first understood the Pikachuu name came from one of the worst crimes against humanity. Eg I understood the name Pikachuu once I found out the atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki were called ピカドン = pikadon by the survivors back when no one knew what atomic bombs were and pika was the extremely bright flash, and don the sound like a thundering drum.
Wow that is logical, but horrifying information.
@@gentrydean3789 There is actually a horrifying Japanese cartoon from 1978 called Pikadon that illustrates in a lot of ugly detail what people of Hiroshima experienced in the bombing, and it's on youtube.
ruclips.net/video/eEOZ1sBppWs/видео.html
@@homerthompson416 It's a f*cking war-crime what America did to Japan,unforgivable.
Same for Raichu which is basically lightning (bolt) mouse 👀
Thank you, Sayaka-San. Bless you for all the wonderful things you have taught me. God bless you!
imagining it in english is crazy "Bzztsqueak" 😂
And pika happening to be a type of rodent is just a happy coincidence 😂❤
Wielki sekret, rozwiązany. 😊
She is just gorgeous 🙏
Pourriez vous faire plus de vidéos pour nous apprendre le japonais ? Vous êtes très douée pour ça ! Et j’aimerai apprendre cette langue…
I love that Pikachu’s name literally means Sparkle-Squeak.
You has blow my mind just right now from my favourite childhood character
I just realised that to a normal regular japanese person, there are alot of anime that to them must feel the like the utter most gut wrenching cringe they have ever felt.
And its kinda amusing
Never knew that, that’s pretty awesome
"And what animal is Pikachu?"
"A RAT!"
"A mouse!"
"Oh."
あなたのビデオは素晴らしいです
Because of you i am able to learn Japanese very much. Thanks alot.
Wow. That's very interesting. Thank you!
You know what else is an onomatopoeia?
The word for "barbarian".
It's from ancient greek.
To them, all uneducated foreigners sounded like they were saying "bar bar bar bar", from which the expression came from.
Your English is flawless. You must have worked very hard. I hope my Japanese can be as good one day!
just discovered your videos recently, finding them helpful, thank you. 🙂
Did you mean "lightning" both times, instead of "lighting"?
Oh, the Pika Pika photo booth makes more sense now.
I was actually thinking about that recently. I am happy to hear your response! 😁
Watching this on loop to hear that entire ".......arigatou" thing she says at the end.
isn't mouse nezumi? and you are the best japanese teacher in youtube keep up great work!
Chu chu is the sound the mouse makes, not the name of the mouse itself
You're welcome👍
ピカチュウ可愛いですね❣️
your royal highness
I have to share this with my friends
Thank you for sharing.
In the beginning, I appreciate your work because it was incredible.❤
Then I wanna ask you a question what do you say in the last 10 seconds of this short you say it so fast so I can't catch it😅
What makes this funny is I believe pikachu is designed after a squirrel
Thank You 😊🙏
😂so much fun while watching your videos
I can’t believe after all these years I’m just hearing this now 🤔. Thank you sweetheart you’re amazing 🙏
Many Pokemon names are derived from Japanese onomatopoeia and phenomena/substances. Nyarth in Japanese is the English name, then Meowth. Meow is "Nya(にゃ)" in Japanese. Raichu is read as Rai, which is the kanji character for "雷(rai、らい)". This is the kanji for thunder.☺I'm sorry if my English is not good.
You did a great job thank you. I eat Japanese food a couple times a week and I still can’t pronounce half the stuff on the menu. Im still trying though
@@R.DelVecchio80 You ate Japanese food? Nice!☺Chain stores have menus in English, Korean, and Chinese, but I heard that most of the menus at independent stores are handwritten and cannot be translated even with Google Lens. Since there are many kanji, it may be difficult to order. There are a lot of delicious foods, so it would be nice if you could read even a little and order more items. good luck!
I live in New York there’s lots of Japanese people living here. I love there food 😋 I have some amazing Ramen and Sushi restaurants right next to my apartment 🙏. I’m Italian and for fun I like to cook. I make my own sushi at home also. I get real wasabi delivered to my apartment, I have a shark skin grater. If I was able to show you a few pics on here I think you would be impressed 😊 I like to cook with miso paste and I have a Deba knife to clean out my fish. I also make Korean chicken and kimchi, dumplings and pork steam buns 😋 I’m hungry now 😉
@@R.DelVecchio80
Wow, I thought you were in Japan! lol🤣
You live in New York! Nice!
It seems that there are a lot of Japanese food, but if the restaurant is run by a Japanese person, it might be Japanese food. From my point of view, there are quite a lot of dishes that say, "That's not Japanese food! It's a creative dish! Especially Sushi........lol
Well, if it's delicious, there's no problem!🤣".
Well, even in Japan, there are dishes that say, "That's not Italian food! It's Japanese original!"😁🤣
If you have the time and money to spare, try it in Japan too! Especially in Kyushu(九州) and Hokkaido(北海道), vegetables, meat and seafood are exceptionally delicious! Enjoy Japanese food in NY!
You're amazing!
Your energy is eclectic❤ keep up the good work ⭐️

It is funny, I was able to put that together as a kid, but I did have a good education in language, grammar, and entomology.
Have you stopped making videos Sayaka. It's been quite a pause since you last updated a video. Please keep making them. They are very good.
i was today years old when i found this out
I kinda thought the "chu" part came from kissing sound, because of Pikachu's cuteness appeal.
