    With Japanese history of seeing objects and places as having the potential of having a soul it's honestly no surprise there's a difference between addressing people from objects.

      Well, yeah! But since in the manga (and in the anime too) he continuously repeats that he’s not lonely (before the concert), that “I’m lonely” is more like a turning point, where he realises that he is indeed lonely.
      I just like this translation better haha, but it can definitely be both.

      この間onomappuのヴィデオで見たけど、『∼い』けいよしの後『∼よ』と『∼な』けいよしの後『∼だよ』付けるのは正しいみたい。

    similar in Korean (like あいたい):
    보고 싶어 (bo-go si-peo) means "i miss you" but literally translates to "I want to see you"
    보다 - to see
    싶어 - to want

    I have a Japanese friend (He was half Japanese and half American). He taught me how to say I love you because I had this crush who was Japanese too. He said to say "Anta Kusai yo" which at the moment meant I like you but it actually meant you stank

    I love these shorts, especially since my only other avenues of learning are picking stuff up from japanese media, which words get misheard all the time in (i thought samishii was pronounced sabishii) or the owl

    こいしい is also used for people. But, we Japanese consider the way of use as a little outdated or exaggerated.

      I mean I’ve seen in used in a fair amount of Hello Project songs, all of these songs “definitely* written in the context of romance so I kinda figured that to be the case. (“Aitai Lonely Christmas” by C-ute being an excellent example)

    I’ve also heard people change it to the te form 会いたくて so to add an implication of I want to see you, BUT I can’t. Correct me if I’m wrong!

      会いたくて basically mean "I miss you" and it's actually an incomplete sentence, but this is not so uncommon in japanese, the rest of the sentence is not specifically stated but understood from the context
      For example
      母に会いたくて(電話した)
      Because I miss my mother (I called her)
      友達に会いたくて(彼の家に行った)
      Because I missed my friend (I paid him a visit)
      Well, I am not an expert, but that's how I understand this 会いたくて

    5 years of knowing Japanese and I have never used the word koishii before. 😅
    I live and work in Tokyo now so whenever I wanna say that I miss my home country to my Japanese colleagues, I just say "Kikoku shitai" 😂

      It's the same thing, both means lonely. Although I don't know which situation to use which or is it just personal preference or dialect/area related. You might have to ask sensei about that lol.

    In my faovrite song Hanabi by Ayumi Hamaski she sings "Aitai yo ne aitai yo" and thats where i first learned the phrase. She sings it so mournfully I got the implication the other person was no longer alive. Is there a certain "I miss you" for the dead or is it still the same?

    Yall reminding me of that scene in Given when Mafuyu's singing his song and in the middle he says "Samishiiyo" And I cried. The song itself is called "Fuyu no Hanashi" (A winter story) and It's about when Mafuyu's boyfriend died and he never got the chance to say "goodbye".😭😭

    「さみしい」には「angry 腹を立てている」という意味もあります。子供に対してよく使い大人がいます。
    学校の教師が生徒に対して「先生は、さみしい」と言えば、「先生は、腹を立てている」という意味です。

    Miss is there a book available to learn how to read and write on Japanese? I saw Japanese novels at a store in my area MD I thought is there a dictionary or a book that teaches the grammar pronunciation of the characters so that I can learn casual conversation as most videos on Japanese were so formal.
    Please teacher give me a list of books to seek. ❤❤❤
