I really like your tutorials. You make it simpler. The one on Black armor and dry brushing the highlights on then cleaning up with the base, finally let me get a grip on black armor. Looking forward to this vid. I'm trying to find the best approach to paint the 3 blade guard in the new DA combat patrol
It's hard to find eavy metal like deathwing painting tutorials (especially with limited options in paint and brushes) and this one is the best i've seen so far! Thx, am definitely gonna give this a go on my deathwing!
I really like this technique. I acquired several more terminators in a trade recently that need to be painted. Dark Angles are one of my backup Army’s. Thanks for the tip.
The really sharp whiplash between black, dark green and this bone white armour makes for a pretty striking force on the table, and they're a lot of fun to paint up. Always some variety!
The bone-white armor that Deathwing wears dates back to when their homeworld, known as Plainsworld, was overrun with Genestealers. Plainsworld was settled millennia before by Lakota Sioux (or descendants). It was a feral world, in the sense that for the most part it was at the same level of development of North America in the 1700s/early 1800s. This bred hard tribal warriors, and the Dark Angels recruited Terminators exclusively from there. One year the Deathwing chapter returned to see if there were more volunteers and they found the world had been taken over by Genestealers. The Terminators were few, and the Genestealers numbered in the thousands. The Lakota used to paint themselves in the ashes from fires made from the bones of their ancestors before entering into battles where they knew they were probably going to die. So the Deathwing painted their armor bone color, and liberated the world at the cost of all but four of their Chapter. Fortunately, the Genestealers that had landed hadn't yet infected the people, they were all purestrain, and were completely wiped out. The Chapter's survivors took the newly liberated people back to the wilderness after burning down the Genestealer Cultists' city, and each became a chief of the new tribes. Decades later, an Imperial Survey landed on Plainsworld, and they deemed that the Deathwing had acquitted themselves with honor and had followed Imperial edicts correctly (in spirit if not letter) and allowed the four surviving to remain (although they did have to return the Terminator suits), so long as they continue to pay the Imperial Tithe; given how highly the saviors of Plainsworld are regarded by their descendants, they have no shortage of volunteers.
This lore has all been retconed its a simple explanation now of: caliban got glassed during the HH, allot of angels died, the bone white armour is a physical representation of their burden and guilt, they couldn't stop the fallen or save their homeworld and their armour is stained white with the Ash of the dead, (apparently this is a reference to the legionarys who walked on ruined caliban and their black armour was stained white with Ash)
Also why the deathwing specifically? Because they are told the truth about what happened during the HH and the secrets of the fallen when they are inducted into the inner circle / deathwing

Love your videos subscribed today and this video is one of my favs , such an amazing effect for so few steps it gave me the courage to start painting myself . have you ever considered showing the full version ? I would love to see this fully painted .
You could, although it'll turn out a little darker - a little closer to the Terminator before I went and put the final drybrush on, if that helps for comparison!
Tanks and such, you mean? I've got a couple waiting for some paint, so I'd be curious to know what sort of scheme you're thinking of. I could simply paint one of mine and do some general tips, if that'd be of any use.
IG Leman Russ, Chimera and such. Possibly a desert scheme or even a plain IG color scheme. I like your method of painting and the earlier one you did on the Chimera with the Zandri Dust and Mechanicus Standard Grey was excellent.
IG Leman Russ and Chimera. Possibly a desert scheme or even a plain IG color scheme. I like your technique of painting and I thought the earlier Chimera camouflage painting tutorial was excellent. Thanks for considering doing a tank painting tutorial.
Awesome. This is exactly what I was planning on doing for my Pallid Hand armor for my Death Guard (with additional Nurgle-y stuff as well of course). Edit: I'm actually using Wrack White for the dry brush. Based on what you said I think that matches what I'm going for.
I was looking at some of those guys and I think you've got it. Wrack White would definitely have that sliiightly more grungy, fleshy tone to it that'll just... ugh, aauughgghhhh... Nurgle...
Would it make sense to thin out the Seraphim Sepia with some medium (similar to the how I paint white episode) so it wouldn't darken the armor so much?
Interesting! You might try it, though I've never given much thought to using medium in the shades. I've made some washes using medium and straight paint, but I'm not sure how it'd interact with the pigments and binders in the shades themselves. If you give it a shot, let me know how it turns out!
Honestly, probably not very much. The way in which the shade works over the primer is very specific. I might try the same process over a Wraith Bone primer, but I don't think I'd go to Contrast for the actual painting part. Mostly since I know what I'll get doing it this way! ;)
I know that a lot of people like to use Wraithbone to paint Deathwing armour. If you weren't painting that many deathwing, would you say it makes more sense to buy the Wraithbone spray, or grab a base brush and just paint Wraithbone all over?
These days I'd just prime them in Wraithbone. It wasn't an option when I first got into them! ;D Wraithbone is actually a really useful primer for all sorts of things, so even though it's a bit pricier than other options, I use it on my US infantry as well as D&D and Stargrave figures I want bright colours on.
I can't tell Are you drybrushing on that first step with the screaming skull? I know you said you had a little dab of water on the brush but the way you're putting it on is more like how one drybrushes a model :P
Overbrushing! It's a very similar technique, but without taking off paint from the brush. Really it's just a quick way to lay down a couple of base coats.
'Dry' paint is a bit of a misnomer. They're still a paint, albeit with a consistency not unlike cottage cheese. Pigments are essentially coloured dust, where these 'dry' paints are formulated to be a lot tackier and adhere to a surface without spreading and running, making them ideal for drybrushing.
Will this work just as well for larger models? I've been painting my marines in my custom chapter colours using the 'eavy contrast bone armour method but am planning to get a pair of Invictor warsuits and not sure the contrast method will work so well so wanted to try this
The Invictor would be the largest I'd try this method on for a white/bone finish, honestly, just be mindful about the shade pooling on flat panels. If you do have any issues you shouldn't find it too difficult to go back over with Skeleton Bone or similar and smooth them out afterwards!
@@SonicSledgehammerStudio alright cheers And what was that big brush you used initially when brushing the screaming skull on the dude? if you dont mind me asking

I ordered some deathwing terminators from eBay already built and primed back. Could I apply Skeleton Bone Army Painter paint directly over that? Or would it cover something that dark? Please let me know what you think! This tutorial is so much more simple than other videos. Thanks a lot
With Skeleton Bone you'll find you can build up the colour fairly easily. Just do a couple of thin passes - the first won't look great, but let it dry and come back to put on another rather than clodging on a whole lot of primer in one go.
Awsome video, thanks so much. Im not the greatest painter but i have high standards, so squads usually take ages to paint 😢. Did my deathwing like this and it was quick easy and gave a great bone finish.

Hello! As always, brilliant video. Can you however use Zandri Dust as base colour and Ushabti Bone as layer that gots washed and then drybrushed? :)
You could, although it'll turn out a little darker - a little closer to the Terminator before I went and put the final drybrush on, if that helps for comparison!
Thank you! Yes it helps, I tend to go a bit darker with my Dark Angels and Deathwing though :)
What Vallejo paints do you think are best to paint deathwing?
Ivory maybe, Pale Sand? I couldn't say specifically since I haven't used any for Deathwing. A colour conversion chart online might be more use here.
Another great and useful tutorial. Any chance you might consider doing some Imperial Guard armor? Thanks for sharing this.

If you water down a bit with lahmian medium you wont even have to dry brush to brighten up.
