Scoured youtube for a reasonably easy yet good looking way of painting my marines, found just what was looking for in your channel. Goodhearted chuckles are a bonus.
Doing the Ultramarines and the red scheme you use for Word Bearers 30k. I noticed you either shade after the base colour and then do the drybrushing or shade after drybrushing. Which do you prefer? I guess shading last will even out some of the mess I make drybrushing.
Normally, in my case, I will usually basecoat, drybrush and then shade. The benefit with this is that once the shade has dried, if you want to highlight even further you can pick a lighter layer paint - or even the same colour as the drybrush - and use that, and get a very natural edge.
I'm a firm believer that an army finished quickly to the same standard, based and ready for the table, will always look better than a mountain of grey plastic behind one perfect, glorious miniature. ;D There's room for taste in there, of course, but sometimes it's as simple as "Just paint!"
Just finished up a Black Templar assault intercessor, thanks for mentioning incubi darkness at the end of the video, that's all I could purchase and IMO it turned out great. Thank you for this tutorial!
Great video. I joined the gw community about 2 years ago but never really got to paint anything. All the tutorials seemed extremely complecatet. But your tutorial showed me how easy it is. Since I watched your video in January I painted 1000 points of deathwatch and I am really pleased with the result. I will go to a tournament next week and I am excited to play with a fully painted army instead of a grey bloob. Thank you!
I'm really glad to hear it! 1000pts in a couple of months? That's awesome! :D If you don't mind sharing, I'd really like to see that army - you don't seem to see a lot of dedicated Deathwatch armies, so that'd be really cool.
That Templar looks absolutely fantastic!! For years I collected Templars but never highlighted the black due to a fear of them turning out too grey, which made for a very dull looking army. Time to knock up a couple of test minis and begin a new crusade. Thank you for taking the time to make these tutorial videos, it's definitely helped with my understanding of how to paint.
My god how has it took this long to find a decent dry brush tutorial? Thank you for this, I get anxiety just thinking about highlighting but now I think I can give dry brushing a go.
It can still take a little practice, but once you get to grips with how different paints come off the brush and the little bit of preparation required, I think drybrushing has its place in every painter's stable. Particularly when you're wanting reliable, easily replicated results.
I just found this video among your long history. Using it for my own Iron Hands force. Thanks a bunch! PS: For some reason I love the phrase "They'll look the business."
I sold my huge Malifaux collection to pay for my new huge 40k collection. Six 2000 point armies in 4 months. I am overwhelmed with the thought of painting but your videos are very motivating! Thank you!
Love your video's. Straight-forward and no mucking about. The models look ace and wil look really cool on the table. Keep it up mate! I'm learning a lot from these tutorials.
Definately stealing the blue-tinted drybrush for my raven guard. Also at 6:11 in the video it looks like Mr. Templar has an extra hand on his belt as an accessory.
Doing Black Templars in MK3 armour, thanks for this technique as I would go insane edge-highlighting MK3 armour. Thanks man, you're a bloody lifesaver!
I hate edge highlighting marines. It's why I stuck to Xenos armies where I could be imperfect. I finally started Black Templars and this is Prefect! Well done
I don't think you went over board with the Dawn Stone. In the end it came looking awesome. I liked the weathered appearance it has at the end. Nicely done there sir!
In retrospect, I would probably have liked to tidy up the front of the Iron Hand's helmet. Otherwise, I'm actually quite pleased with how he came out - I need to remember what an effect the varnish has on that drybrushed harshness. It's good stuff!
This is great. Just got into Deathwatch, and I was dreading doing black. Haven't ever been able to get a black themed army to look good. Thanks for the guide
Excellent video as always. Got me a black and white project on my hobby table. love the tip of drybrushing the edge of the base as a test. Why I have I never thought of that?
I really like the technique of drying brushing the highlights a little over the top and then toning it right down with nuln oil. Looked very good. Going to try that with my Shadow Keeper Custodes. Thanks.
Thanks for another great video. I replicated the results from your 11th video on drybrushing blood angels and love the result so far. Yet to do the varnish stage. Gonna use this method for my Death Company. Thanks again.
Amazing and simple tutorial , love the way you did the dark templar´s armor . It is fast, and look nice, and if one gives it more time and details, can be even better. Thanks!
With the Deathwatch it works even better, since the focus of the miniature's usually on that bright silver arm and the Chapter badge, which are pretty easy to paint as well. :D Hope it works!
Thanks for this tutorial. I used the technique on my pre heresy/fallen Dark Angels it was quick and they look great even worked on the Contemptor Dreadnought. Keep them coming all your vids are brilliant. Cheers.
I think the only thing cooler than a Norseman in full Space Marine armor (how I paint things: space wolves), is a Knight Templar in full Space Marine armor. Black is one of those colors that frustrates me to no end. How black do I paint this? If I paint it too black how can I shade it? If I don't paint it black enough after its highlighted will it look grey and not black at all? Blah blah blah, good grief I drive myself nuts with that darn color! But oh how I love it so lol. Great video as always. Keep them coming. And I hope your abode passed your in-laws white glove inspection over the past weekend lol.
With some luck and the grace of the Emperor on my side, yes, the apartment passed muster. ;D Black is a tricky one, I find, since there's so many different ways of getting it right. It's really a style choice in the end, and after that you've got to think about what colour you want to highlight with, and that turns into yet another debate on style and tone and so on...! There's no denying that once you've got something that works for you, though, a black army can look incredibly striking on the table!
Always love your guides, from IG guardsman all the way to needing a guide like this for my Ravenwing Black Knight bikes. Now could be a good time maybe for a "how I paint Marine Bikes" or some thing along those lines because all black vehicles like bikes are intimidating & with the new Outrider models lots of people will be looking to bikes. Cheers! Love your content brother.
slightly jealous, you make it look so easy. my paintings like a 4 year old did it. whoever said that you get better with repetition never saw me paint. great vid anyway.
I was excited by how easy this looked, so I gave it a shot and failed pretty hard by over-doing it. Similar to what's happened on the helmet of your Iron Hands marine, but all over the model. Getting that finish that we see at 4:03 and 5:20 in this video is not as easy as you make it look... you're very well practiced in this technique. As I watch the video again, I'm thinking the key is to be very selective and neat with the drybrushing (as weird as that sounds), and not to over do it!
Oh no! I think the key with this is always to have 'too little' paint on your brush, since you can go back over and continue adding more if you want to. Having too much to begin with will end up getting that chalky, crunchy finish. Luckily, since it's a first stage to painting the miniature, it's not too hard to black it all in again and start fresh.
Thanks for the reply. Rather than layering on more paint, I've cleaned off the model with isopropyl alcohol (which is amazing for this btw), have re-primed black, and will give it another go with "too little" on the brush and being much more selective about where to drybrush. Wish me luck!
There was a time that GW was going heavily in the direction of photographs of the miniatures on all their boxes, so these ones are a real treat to see making a resurgence on the starter boxes. :D
Hi there love your videos done a whole army of ultra marines following your other painting guide . Can I ask what black you have used for the base coat ? Love the iron hands going to start a new army now after watching this video
I was blessed one day to see how much of a difference the varnish made over these drybrushing techniques and hoooooo, boy! I've never gone back for army painting.
What would you recommend for black armor with yellow or metallic gold? Specifically i am looking at the alternate paint schemes in the Imperial Fists color plates in HH3. Specifically black armor with yellow shoulders and yellow helmet, sergeants with red helmets; and the terminators with black armor and metallic gold trim. Also wondering about a dark charcoal grey that appears black unless it is next to a true black, like from the Raven Guard plates.
Hei Sonic sorry for the odd question on the old video, with aos slave to darkness coming out this december could you a similar things for chaos warriors or knights or both? I would really appriciate it.
That'd work, too! You'll end up with a very, very faint blue tone overall that'll almost disappear under the wash, but it'll be noticeably different from just straight grey.
Really awesome video, my next project is going to be Deathwatch, and I am defiantly going to use this video as a guide for the black armour. A question though; In the beginning of the video you mention using Dark Reaper & Fenrisian Grey as your highlights for the Black Templar, but at the end you speak about Incubi Darkness and Fenrisian Grey. I understand it's a slip of the tongue, but what would the outcome be with an Incubi Darkness base highlight with Fenrisian Grey, in regards to a Deathwatch scheme?
The bases are actually really easy! I spread on some Armageddon Dunes textured paint first and give that about an hour to dry solid, then hit it with some Seraphim Sepia shade. Once that's dried a quick drybrush of Tyrant Skull finishes it off. Mournfang Brown around the edges of the bases, and I use a couple of tufts from whatever range I think will fit; these are Army Painter Mountain Tufts.
I started with a couple of thin layers of Rakarth Flesh first, then some Seraphim Sepia, layer back on Ushabti Bone and some Screaming Skull in the corners as highlights. Nice and quick over black!
My problem is how slow I am with a brush, really - if I touch up, I might as well edge highlight the lot to begin with! Though I should make mention of being able to fix up any mistakes with a splash of black, in retrospect.
If you're going to paint black armour it's always best to do a single thin coat of black over the primer, just in case you need to touch up any small black areas later. The primers will usually match black pretty much perfectly, but anywhere that the primer hasn't covered 100% it'll look out of place once the miniature is drybrushed and shaded.
@@SonicSledgehammerStudio thanks for the reply I'm a beginner and just starting to paint a deathwatch kill team. Going to try this method on my second miniature tried Edge highlighting the first. Do you have any videos on creating cool bases for the miniatures
Hi, you've made really useful video! Can you help me out? Which of these two techniques is better for Raven Guard? Iron Hand greyish or Black Templar blueish? 🤔
That's one I can't really answer! It's up to you which you think suits them better, ultimately. I'd go for the blue tint to the black for the Raven Guard, myself, but there's no correct answer to that one.
Take a little more time to make sure you've only got a fraction on your brush, but it'll work just fine. Remember to try drybrushing the edge of your miniature's base to see how much you'll leave behind!
It should still be the same Dawnstone - I got mine from the GW just a couple of weeks before this was shot. If mine looks darker, that's probably the Nuln Oil wash over the top.
The swatches on the webstore are a little funky, honestly, and normally you'll find that the paint actually dries on the miniature just a little darker, too. If it's just the GW webstore that doesn't look quite right, I wouldn't worry about it! :)
Definitely keeping this bookmarked for when I start painting my Deathwatch.
Same here
This was sad to read in 2024 :/

“Better to be finished than perfect” fantastic advice! Love this series on how to use dry brushing to its full potential and paint quickly!
I'm a firm believer that an army finished quickly to the same standard, based and ready for the table, will always look better than a mountain of grey plastic behind one perfect, glorious miniature. ;D There's room for taste in there, of course, but sometimes it's as simple as "Just paint!"

What looks better edge highlights or dry brush
Just in time for Deathwatch. And no edge highlighting.
I suspect there'll be a few folks out there wanting to get some alien-munching monster marines on the board quickly... ;D
Question:
What is your prefered queue?
Drybrush and than shade or
Shade and drybrush?
I almost always go for the drybrush first, then shade. It helps blend the two layers together so the drybrush doesn't look so chalky in most cases.
Yeah that was my idea also. But I often do drybrush last so I get to keep that chalkyness.
I only have dawnstone-layer, will that work as well?
Take a little more time to make sure you've only got a fraction on your brush, but it'll work just fine. Remember to try drybrushing the edge of your miniature's base to see how much you'll leave behind!
Does anyone have a list of the paints used in this tutorial?

It should still be the same Dawnstone - I got mine from the GW just a couple of weeks before this was shot. If mine looks darker, that's probably the Nuln Oil wash over the top.
i mean in the actual pot i look on the store and it looks alot whiter
The swatches on the webstore are a little funky, honestly, and normally you'll find that the paint actually dries on the miniature just a little darker, too. If it's just the GW webstore that doesn't look quite right, I wouldn't worry about it! :)
