Back to Basics: Drybrushing Deathwatch! [How I Paint Things]

- The Deathwatch are the final word in the Imperium's defence against the alien menace that threatens to devour all humanity. Clad in sinister black and silver armour, they are the spear tip aimed at the heart of the xenos threat.
There's almost no end to the way that you can paint black power armour, but this neat blue-black touch is one that I really like for Space Marines, especially with the subtle warmth of their leather equipment and the red casings on their boltguns. With just a little extra work on a drybrushed base, you can very easily adapt this to just about any black power armour you can think of - I for one am very much looking forward to new Black Templars!

I actually think those extra smudges on the mini look great! Gives it kind of a gritty, battleworn armor look. Thanks for the tutorial.
You've opened my eyes to how much im over thinking this project. Bless you
Finally, a technique that looks great and much easier to pull off than typical edge highlighting. I love the blue-black hue of the armor - just brilliant. Thank you for this!
Glad you like it!
In the fluff, the Deathwatch armour crackles with energy and it's described as blue lightening.. So this is sweet!
Great instructions and video.
I hate doing all the edge highlighting on the armour, which led me to leave my precious DW unpainted and focus on Necrons. Thanks to you I enjoy painting my DW again! Thanks a lot!
I actually went from necrons to DW because I hated how short the process was lol!
@@knightsminifoundry 😁
My Raven Guard are painted using your black armour tutorial from a few years ago, but I’m a big fan of Corvus Black and I’ve used your Commissar tutorial on a couple of models that have turned out nicely. This is another great black I’ll have to find a place for!
Geez, that dry brush highlighting on the edges is like magic! Thank you!!
Love it! This could be the push I needed to do those Black Templar’s that I’ve always wanted to do, but didn’t now how I wanted to approach the armour. Thank you.
Thanks for doing more black armor! Love to see different methods.
Looks great
Corvus Black and Corax White. I'm glad I'm not only one!
You probably just helped me finish my army. Thank you sir.
Thank you for this tutorial, I just found out about the death watch and Im looking forward to trying your technique!
This is awesome man!!
You do the best tutorials, thank you.
Thank you kindly! I really appreciate it. :D
Another great tutorial ! Thank you Mr. Sonic !
Hugely helpful, especially in regards to correct dry brushing technique, as well as the clean up.
I find that with that little bit of extra time spent on tidying those rough edges, people don't think twice about how you've done the highlights. It's not quite hiding the fact you've drybrushed them, but nobody comments on it.
Thanks for this! I’m about to start a Deathwatch Kill Team and this is so helpful. Drybrushing is a lifesaver for beginner painters like me and what I’m learning is less is more. Love your teaching style and all of your tutorials.
This might be my favorite of your space marines.
MY DREAM COME TRVE. Now I can properly start my DW army without leaving it grey. THANKS FELLA YOU'RE GREAT
I read the title several times; trying to work out what Drybrush Deathwatch was? Some sort of Deathwatch who operate in savannah? Finally, it clicked. 😺 That is a good looking drybrushed Deathwatch dude.
Heeeyyy that starfleet command mug is all i needed to see....!!! nice video too
I've been looking for something exactly like this! Thank you a ton, will be applying this towards the Raven Guard force
Always great videos, thanks ! And very good job 😊
Been really keen to start a deathwatch army but edge highlighting had me a bit freaked out. Excited to give this a try. My Chaos knights were really barebones with Layer paints and a primer and my GSC were contrast paint heavy so it'll be fun to try another approach for another army.
He looks fantastic. I've been using contrast for deathwatch (black templar over grey seer) but think I'm going to give this a go
I learned a lot from this tutorial! I like the painted cardboard for testing your dry brushing. Thanks for sharing this and the figure looks great.
Never doubt the incredible power of a sheet of cardboard! 😂
My Raven Guard started off using your black from a few years back...and I've got to say this beats that handily! Well done and I'll be incorporating this!
Nothing wrong with the new recruits getting the slightly sharper kit, right? ;D
Love your videos!
Thank you for this excellent tutorial.
You're more than welcome! Deathwatch are one of those stand-out cool armies in 40k, so I kinda had to get to them eventually!
Just got some of these bad boys and I knew you'd have a video 😁😁😁
Very, very nice indeed!
Thank you , Sonic .
Super cool
Regardless the colour of the armour, the results are always fantastic. Amazing space marines, as usual. You make things seem easy! Congrats, great video. Thank you!
It's easy to overthink Space Marines! The technique's pretty simple once you've had a bit of practice, and reliable as well. :D
I've a huge Sisters of battle army in Epic 40k scale to paint, and I've never been able to pull of black armour at small scale as it just looks grey, but this might be a good way to trick the eye into it looking black at small scale too. I will have to give it a go.
I hate edge highlighting. I do a nibblet green dry brush on DA. I like what you did here
We reminded you and you didn't remember last time! :-( Awesome vid as always. Thank you very much. :-)
Thank you for the great guides. Could you do some Guides about painting Dreadnoughts or Landraiders ?
Very nice. I've got a decent force of Deathwatch looking for some inspiration - this helps greatly!
Glad to hear it! I'm sure you've probably put a couple of the Griffon shoulder pads on as well, somehow... ;D
This is wonderful. I have very shaky hands and has been hesitant to get into the hobby for a long time as I know I'm not near steady enough to edgehighlight. I started painting recently though and went with black armour with drybrushing for my highlights but as a complete noob I haven't had as great results as you had here but now I have some solid guidance I feel like I'm not stuck with solid blobs of black as my marines.
I've found increasingly that my hands aren't as steady as they used to be, either. Luckily, those little cleanup steps don't ask much, so you can fake out some of the most prominent highlights. :D
If you want to still use the Griffon shoulder pad, you could try the Knights of Gryphonne Chapter. Plus you'd get to paint orange!
Hmm... I do like orange!
Another fantastic video.
What drybrush did you use in this??
I never understood why people say you can't drybrush marines. I get nothing but compliments for my marines and their armor is layers of drybrushing.
I only get the airbrush out for the big vehicles
The vents should be silver. Great choice
2:00 Bring out one of the most important tools in our WHAT?
Grey tutorial as always. I'm a big fan of your guides. Would you use this exact method on dreadnoughts and vehicles to go with the foot troops?
You might need to adapt a little on how the wash would work on larger surfaces - maybe targeted recess shading rather than applying over the whole thing - but for the most part, yeah. Marines are just little tanks, themselves!
I seriously hope GW doesn't copyright strike you (and all the others on youtube) for painting their models and uploading it to youtube. That's the road they're headed down. Keep up the good work anyway, nice tutorial
I sincerely doubt they'll go as far as painting videos and the like, but if that's what they decide it's a simple matter to remove what I've done featuring their work over the years, and they can put their own advertising up behind Warhammer+ if they fancy.
Thank you from Germany. My first army will look much better if I use technics and exercise it on an few minis.
Regarding the paint names: "Corvus" is the genus name for ravens, so Corvus Black = Raven Black.
Aye, it's just a pain trying to remember not to swap Corvus and Corax when you're talking about the black and the white. It's like trying to keep Rosencrantz and Guildenstern straight in your head.
How this technique could work on Blood Angels. Well, I know that you've already made a video, but I'm still curious. Instead of these two highlight colours (Longbeard Grey and Fenrisian Grey) what colours could work on red BA armor?
Blood Angels these days I'd paint more or less the same as how I did the Order of the Bloody Rose. Kindleflame is apparently being retired, though, so I'd pick a couple of pots of that up before they get rid of something really useful!
Awesome video. Thank you! Can I ask, where did you get the drybrush?
Probably picked it up from Amazon at some point. I'm afraid I honestly don't recall!
@@SonicSledgehammerStudio that's ok. I picked a few up today. And using this video I have used them for my first DW terminator. Thank you!!
Hey Sledge, any particular reason you drybrushed this grey and washed blue, opposed to drybrushing blue and washing black like you did with the sister? Or just experimenting? If so, do you have a favourite?
Grey and washed blue will give you a slightly more blue-tinted finish, where the drybrush blue and wash black tends to a sharper, colder grey finish. It depends a little on what the rest of the miniature is doing. With the Sister there's a lot of red and white to carry visual interest, so 'normal' black armour works just fine, whereas the Deathwatch only have a small splash of colour in their bolters, so setting that red off against a colder blue-black finish will look a little better. At least in my opinion!
Could ya show us how to drybrush a black Templar, would like to see a darker black
I've actually done Black Templars a while back on the channel. Just skip the Corvus Black!
Could this method also be applied to the dark blue armour of the Crimson fists?
It certainly could. In fact, it'd probably look something like this: ruclips.net/video/tsfngDW0Bxs/видео.html ✌
Now how would you go about doing Howling Griffins in the dryvrush method..........😈
Now there's one you won't catch me doing any time soon. Though they aren't impossible: ruclips.net/video/2ymCD2ETdI4/видео.html
Dont have any longberd paint can dawn stone work?
You could use it, sure, but the end result will look different. Dawnstone isn't as bright.
Hi. Hope you are okay? I have painted Trish from the Devil May Cry bloody Palace board game, and used your drybrush technique on her black leather trousers and front lace up crop top. A fantastic way to get the best details popping on a miniature. You might want to check out Devil may cry as there are some amazing figures to paint in a variety of different sized models. Really pushes the skill levels. Think you would do them justice though. Take care. Thanks again for hints and keeping people's spirits up.
This could be used for raven guard isn't it? or do you have any other tutorial that could fit better?
I cant seem to get the hang of dry brushing
Ah thank you very much for this. Just finished my deathwatch and need to top them with dry brushing to finish them. Btw the Corax black and white is a cheeky joke by them.
I do feel a little bad knowing you've already gone through so many Deathwatch Marines! 😅
@@SonicSledgehammerStudio a handful of deathwatch marines are not that bad to paint…unlike imperial guard. Have pity on the guardsmen player for they paint forever.
I'm a subscriber, but it seems like RUclips isn't suggesting your content to me 🤔
Well, that's exciting! :/ Thanks, RUclips! Maybe try using the notification bell and see if that makes it work? I'd heard this was affecting others, too.
Nice watch. Love the final look but you need to drill the bolter muzzle.
Ahhh, thats a fan animation!! Yikes, its moving!!! EEEEEK!!!!!
Good luck, have a fun weekend. Seriously good luck, GW is getting testy.
