Uh, none took me to any thumbnails of your work. Would really like to see some, print & put up for inspiration. Will apologize for my comments had to much eggnog this weekend. But, should not have lowered myself to that level of ignorance.
This is nuts! I just got in to the miniatures, built and painted my first one last night. I really hope to get on this level at some point. This is award worthy. Before getting in to this I would browse and gawk at everyone else paints but this is by far the best I have seen.
I gravitate to a more "grimdark style"... But, when this high impact is done right, like was here... Can't be denied that it's really striking and really brings up the details of the mini!
Finally had a chance to watch through this, definitely going to make use of this for Obsidius and his henchmarines for my Blackstone Fortress. Thanks for linking me to your videos when I asked about getting back into painting after a 20 year break before a certain person kicked me from their "hobby" page (though at times it started to seem more like their own clickbait service). Also even though I already have an Element Games account will do my next paint order using your affiliate link so you get a bit of a bonus from them.
Thanks so much for these videos. I understand that a lot of your method is how you think your paints to the right consistency - would be interesting to have a video where you cover that and possibly show you you're able to get such thin and consistent lines on your models - they always turn out so crisp it's something to be envious of!
Thr only thing I do to thin paint is add water to it, there's no secret technique. As for the thin lines, sadly I cannot teach you brush control over a video, it's all about practice. You need to develop the soft touch required by yourself, use just the VERY TIP of the brush and use a large brush, using a large brush will make you learn it much faster.
Like and subbed, really nice work. I dismissed contrast paint as something for people who don't like to paint details, but you have proven how valuable they can be. Gonna try to paint my leather with Gore Grunta now, it looks really nice. Excellent video mate!
You rule, friend. Lovely as always. Black is one of my least favorite colors to paint, I think making it look good is harder than any other color. Also, big fan of how that brown on the gold turned out. Makes it less color saturated than I usually go with, which works very well on a black color scheme. Although, I'm always wondering how to manipulate the colors I've used on a mini, I think maybe going a bit warmer by using the Gore-Grunta Fur in the recesses of the black and the gold wash could be a really neat effect. I'll give it a try next black and gold model I get a chance to paint and will try to pass on the results.
I've seen Girlyman Flesh contrast used as a wash over gold before as well. Think it gives a warmer gold than this from what I have seen but for 10,000 year old Black Legion this approach is really good for an older gold (as said by Emdee 001 above)
@@GarethS998 yeah I know, I use fleshtones for gold most the time. Just thought maybe in this particular case, going with the same brown he uses for the pouches and leather might be a little extra tying the miniature together, while still keeping more of a brown tone for old gold.

@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures I've noticed you use the Black Templar mix as a black wash a lot. Do you prefer it over Nuln Oil or is there a different reason you prefer it the way you do?

@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures 100% understand. Love the videos. It's great work and doesn't make me feel like I can't accomplish the same end result! Thanks again
I always say what I'm using, usually Contrast Medium. As for how much, to get the consistency I show in the thumb. There are no ratios, you have to learn how to do it by feel.
I gotta tell ya Juan, I come to your channel sometimes just to feel good. Your background music and your voice are good for learning and relaxing. I have no interest in painting Chaos, but I'm watching this anyway because it's just so damn theraputic. Keep up the damn fine work P.S fuck blue
Brilliant... I love the idea of contrast paints and had no idea how amazing the finished product could be... What highlight colors would you use on Shyish Purple?
When you edge highlight the black armor on chaos space marines, you basically press that first row of thunderhawk blue flush next to the gold trim? Im having a tough time edge highlighting csm bcause theres really not edges per se. The edges are technically the gold trim, so the highlights are technically where the trim touches the armor in every place?
This is an AMAZING way to paint black, I'd have never considered using contrast as a tint, you've ended a long LONG ordeal of me trying to find a way to paint black that I like! This is such inspiring work. If I may ask. I've tried to recreate this about 10 minutes ago, and I have a couple of questions if that would be okay? 1) I don't have access to Mechanicus grey spray can, can you suggest another paint that would be a good base to start from? (I have an airbrush if that changes anything). 2) How do you get such a smooth finish on the black contrast coat? Mine cones out somewhat streaky on the smoother panels like the shoulder pad. Thank you for making this video, consider me subscribed!
Glad you liked it. You can use any mid gray, I know there is an Air version as well as regular pot of Mechanicus available. But again, any mid grey paint will serve as well. As for the smoothness, try using a large brush, apply a thick coat and let the gravity and surface tension do it's job, then absorb the excess where its pooling too much. It requires a bit of technique, but it's easy to get the hang off
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures A great painter and one who quickly replies to his fanbase. A great painter and gentleman too. Thanks so much! Keep up the amazing work! Do you have any other miniatures painted up in that black scheme? A full army like that would be killer! Thanks again!

If you check my comment section of all my videos you will see how I treat my audience, I do things differently
Como siempre un trabajo excelente y de admirar estimado Juan H. por favor podrías indicarme que pincel es el que usas recuerdo que una vez lo mencionaste pero no se en cual video fue.
Question: Why use "layer" paints to highlight? Why not use base paints mixed with Lahmian medium or with water? Or both? How are layer paints superior? I don't use layer paints therefore my curiosity.
Great Video. What kind of brush did you use? And would you say you could get the same result using a normal shade like Nuln Oil on the metal? Thanks a lot. Gonna try this on the Eldritch Omens Box.
hi there really like your vids my friend i was wondering if you could do the metallic style ultramarine ive been seeing people do for there new box sets kind regards paul :)
Dices para la veladura final sobre el negro? Si puedes. Te va a aportar un tono distinto pero será muy sutil. Como tú dices, mezcla Guilliman Blue con Lahmian Medium y tendrás algo que te servirá bien
I usually note very clearly when I'm using medium, i haven't re watched this to confirm but I'm very sure I used medium because I always do for contrast paints
Hello Juan, great work like always. Have you ever painted a mini with only one light source from above, because I saw you work mostly with four light sources ? So that the parts which lie in the shadows are nearly black? Like big miniatures or paintings? Would be interesting what you think about that style ? Greetings keep up the beautiful work. I tried it and it is really difficult.
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures Thank you for your response. You always write back, really great. I think your style looks better to but you are really a great painter so other so. I tried it out of curiosity.
Of course I always respond. If someone takes the time to write a question or a comment the least I can do is answer. I do use that method for faces and flesh actually, makes it look more realistic bit for the rest I tebdo to go pure Eavy Metal

@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures 100% understand. Love the videos. It's great work and doesn't make me feel like I can't accomplish the same end result!
Thanks again
Very happy to help mate
When you thin down the contrast paints to a glaze consistency, what do you use to dilute it and how much of it do you use?
I always say what I'm using, usually Contrast Medium.
As for how much, to get the consistency I show in the thumb. There are no ratios, you have to learn how to do it by feel.
Can you paint a blightking ❤ love your work🎉
I gotta tell ya Juan, I come to your channel sometimes just to feel good. Your background music and your voice are good for learning and relaxing. I have no interest in painting Chaos, but I'm watching this anyway because it's just so damn theraputic. Keep up the damn fine work
P.S fuck blue
Thanks mate 😘, love you too
Brilliant... I love the idea of contrast paints and had no idea how amazing the finished product could be... What highlight colors would you use on Shyish Purple?
Thanks, not sure as I haven't used it much. Probably something like Deamonette Hide would be my first guess
Yes, you need to leave a super thin line of the black in between the gold and the edge highlight, as small as possible but has to be there
love this tutorial thank you so much. can i ask what size brush this was that you used? looking at moving up from citadel layer brushes
Rosemary and Co series 33 size 3
Mira Juan, con este sí que te la has sacado.
😂😂😂
Es fácil cuando hay poco que sacar, casi sale sola 😂
Very nice
Thanks mate 😘
I also did a sister of Battle and the Raven Guard marine. But not I don't have a 40k army.
I personally appreciate each and every single comment and I believe that if someone took part of their time writing it the least I can do is take a bit of mine to answer it.
If you check my comment section of all my videos you will see how I treat my audience, I do things differently
Awesome video like always!!! When will we see this for Word Bearers? Because they also are real Haters of Blue 🤣
Soon
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures thank you for the quick answer 😀
Como siempre un trabajo excelente y de admirar estimado Juan H. por favor podrías indicarme que pincel es el que usas recuerdo que una vez lo mencionaste pero no se en cual video fue.
Question: Why use "layer" paints to highlight? Why not use base paints mixed with Lahmian medium or with water? Or both? How are layer paints superior? I don't use layer paints therefore my curiosity.
Paint is paint, forget about the arbitrary category GW has decided to give them, I just use the hue I need that's all
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures Cool. Thanks for response. Great channel. I've learned a lot from your videos!
Happy to help, thanks for watching
Great Video. What kind of brush did you use? And would you say you could get the same result using a normal shade like Nuln Oil on the metal? Thanks a lot. Gonna try this on the Eldritch Omens Box.
Rosemary and Co series 33 size 3, you have a link to them in the description.
Yeah you can use Nuln Oil instead bit it's not as good, it works though
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures thank you, i will give it a try
hi there really like your vids my friend i was wondering if you could do the metallic style ultramarine ive been seeing people do for there new box sets kind regards paul :)
Sorry but I don't plan on doing that.
You can watch the Alpha legion video and basically change Akhelian Green for Talassar Blue
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures i will try it cheers
Está muy bonita, cuánto tiempo te llevó pintarla realmente?. Un saludo.
Ni idea, nunca cuento tiempo. Pero quizás entre 8 y 12
When painting detail do you still thin you paints
Of course, you always have to thin your paints
Any tips on what black to use if I got some gold on the armour pieces? Just starting off and the gold detailing can be a bit frustrating. Thanks!
Depends on where it lands, but corvus black or Dark Reaper could be a good starting point
Amazing paint job! What figure is that I'd love to try my hand at painting it.
It's made from the Chaos Marines box
Thanks.
Hola!
do you recommend using a zenital prime with black and then mechanicus standard grey?
You can, it will work very well for this paintjob
When making a glaze from akhelion green do you thin with water or contrast medium?
I usually note very clearly when I'm using medium, i haven't re watched this to confirm but I'm very sure I used medium because I always do for contrast paints
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures Thanks mate !
Happy to help!
I did back in the day but I find the Eavy Metal style more compelling to me if I'm honest
I love your work! Can I ask what size brush you use for this video? I love that it holds the paint well but still has a fine point
Rosemary and Co series 33 size 3. As with 90% of my painting
