God among painters, wonder why Ferals ahead of other RUclipsrs who have been in the game for 11 years? Because he’s talented, he understands grim dark and most of all he gives a shit about his work, he doesn’t chase the hype models he’s there every night working on his craft. I couldn’t be more proud of owning some models he’s painting. Such an inspiring artist and great bloke. Keep smashing it Nate!!!
Just want to say that this has transformed my ability to paint black armour. It is so fun to stipple and sponge, giving my Black Legion a realistic texture. In addition, for anyone wondering if you cannot get the recommended paint, stippling charred brown Game Colour followed with a stipple of Panzer Aces light rust will also give a nice rust undercoat for your minis. Thanks so much for this tutorial!
I always get totaly blown away every time i watch your videos mate.. your skill set is just stunning, love how you make grimdark and still have the ability to make your minis look alive,... Thanks alot man🙏
This is how I want to paint black power armour from now on. I just painted my chaplain. I wish I had seen this first. Your techniques are way better than mine. Thanks for sharing!!
Phenomenal work! I just got into Warhammer 40k and painting; I’m so happy I discovered your channel! Can’t wait to watch your other videos and what you’ll post in the future :)
Amazing work . I come here as often as i can to learn more and more, i know i said before but thank you really.. to me the best painter out there transformed my minis aged ahead in no time! Would love to see your take on some grim, thousand sons rubic marines and death guard marines 💪💪
In the 41st millennium, there is no WD40. Jokes aside this is incredible work and a great tutorial, thankyou. Definitely going to try this style on my Deathwatch army. Feel like DW wouldn't be as "grimdark-y" as Black Legion so a more toned down version but this is so cool.
Love your videos man. I find myself trying to emulate so much of what you do while finding ways to put my own twist on it. Just sending appreciation as well as a request/idea for a video going over wood/forest textures in the grimdark style.
Will we ever see a grimdark style night lords? I've been trying to imagine how the blue armor would look with flayed skin from the other tutorials with villainy inks
This is a fantastic scheme, almost makes me want to do a Chaos army, I'd be interested to see what you could come up with for an Alpha Legion colour scheme, that kind of metallic green they have I think would look pretty sick in a grimdark chaos army.
Wish I could get my hands on some Villainy Inks. The only place in Canada that carries it (Fenris Workshop) isn't getting any new stock because of up-front costs.
I used a similar method for doing Blood Ravens. Just red build up instead of black. I gotta say I love working with sponges for that textured, gritty vibe. I hadn't considered doing it for black armor, so this was a great watch. I am curious if you feel like the armor needs edge highlighting or chipping? Or is the texturing enough to break up the features?
Awesome paint job! Do you have an acrylic-alternative to the enamel-mineral spirit grime you put on at 9:56 ? I've seen the effect before and wish I could make it with my basic acrylic/wash setup
Not really as enamels have a different look/finish. U could use contrast paints thinned but wont have the same look or finish. And would have to be very accurate as once on they carnt be removed
That brown rusty base coat is such a versatile technique. Thanks man! Do you think it could work to speed up grimdark chaos trim painting to skip the metallic base coat and go straight to drybrushing?
You minis are incredible. Is there any chance you could do an Adepta Sororitas at some point? With the head swaps from Green Stuff World they seem like they could actually be quite amazing.
Ceramite might not rust but that doesn't mean the paint and finish over the ceramite doesn't have metal particulates in it that can rust. Iron Warriors armor isn't actually solid Iron but its coated in an iron finish just as one example. Lead based paint can also oxidize and turn a chalky yellow and who knows how paint is made all over the galaxy. Also whose to say the fasteners and rivets holding the ceramite plates and armor components together isn't some form of steel? In the GrimDark Future there's rust and plenty of it.
So two questions, first could you give the nearest equivalent for the villainy inks for a few of the other common brands of enamels, or just mention a good place to look that up in your videos? Second have you ever played around with florescent white paint, I don't even think it's sold as miniature paint so I think you would need to hit an art supplies website but I'm curious about the effects for things like dotting golwy eyes or using it to highlight something that is already white(say the innermost lines on the lightning pattern on nightlords armor)?
Mmmm good question ive never tried those paints. However ak streak and grime is similar, but in my opinion not as versatile as VI. Although good. I prefer Vi.
They usually dry and are safe to varnish over after about 20mins, or use blow dryer to speed up. Enamels and oils dont fully cure untill around 24hours. However this is the same for most primers and acylics. But u can apply varnish after around 20mins
haha been meaning to ask you for this tutorial too! this is going to be the recipe for my slaves to darkness army :) thanks! Can I ask how you did the initial priming coats. Was it Black all over, then the first brown at about 60degree zenithal, then the red brown just on highlights?
@@TheFeralPainter cheers! Would also love to see that slightly less rusted Black templars scheme you mentioned at the end, or even a Slaves to Darkness one given they are getting their book release for Sigmar shortly. - PS I think you do the best tutorials man, great work
@@TheFeralPainter thanks mate. I like this tutorial so much I might stick with this, but maybe I’ll try a few options first. Kinda was also thinking of giving a bluish hue to the armour, but to be honest, looks a little blue in this tutorial. If not I’ll figure out a way to do that. Maybe a wash of leviathan blue?
I assume that you do it, but do you thin the paint even doing the sponge stippling? Understand that you do with brush stippling, just one of those things I just have to ask. Wonderful work btw, your videos have been the catalyst I need to start painting/practicing.
Can I suggest a video on grim dark Emperors Children in the not too distant future? We all know what is coming and will want to paint that in a grim dark style- ideally without an airbrush 😉
