The fact that France beat NZ, Ireland beat SA. NZ beat Ireland and SA best France just shows how close all these teams really are. It’s about taking the moments and opportunities when presented and even one missed opportunity can cost you the game.

As a South African, they were always my second team for this comp given the exact reasons you listed. Huge relief that we made it through, but no joy in breaking their hearts.

I must say, the reaction from some of my countrymen after NZ beat Ireland, was despicable and embarrassing. But for the most part I think we've been pretty good after beating the French.

@@ajm6464 it's one of the strongest french teams ever, on home soil with an entire country's hopes on their shoulders, losing by one point after playing their hearts out. Also it's not true, our players looked as sad and dejected back in 2015 when we lost 18-20 to the Kiwis in the semi's.

There was this kind of special aura around this French team...playing at home and everything. Congrats to South Africa for such an amazing game of rugby that will be remembered forever. An epic...a classic. XV of France were immense, so good in so many departments, Dupont is exceptional. Boks dug deep...like the Ireland v All Blacks game, both these teams, in fact all 4 teams would be worthy finalists and winners...sport can be so brutal.
Du Pont is truly a magnificent player, this was the very best of him. Still scratching my head as to how the Boks came out on top but they had the composure to make it happen - well done my Bokke!
I honestly thought France would be way to strong for Boks. Especially playing at home. Well done boks.
We all know it's about the ridiculous draw that these 2 quarter finals seem like finals, hope they get it right next time.
On the flipside, it also meant that we got to see four incredibly competitive matches in two days. If the draw was done "correctly", it may well have turned into four boring, one sided blow outs.

All the European media outlets were saying Ireland or France would win the World Cup, they completely disregarded the pedigree of The All Blacks and Springboks at World Cups. There's a good lesson in all of this, never write off the Southern Hemisphere teams.

8 hours later i am still emotional and in utter shock that we beat France with just a single point.
I hate that WE 🇿🇦 had to be the ones to break the FRENCH people's hearts like that, I am gutted really,the cruelty of this particular match is on another level really...The FRENCH team pushed the BOKS from the first whistle all the way til the last kick by Cheslin.
This was by far the most gut wrenching rugby match I've ever witnessed.
A big shout out to the FRENCH 🇨🇵 for such an amazing game of rugby displayed.
Now for ENGLAND, if only we could remain calm,focused and never have airs about us coz they are not gonna be no walk over as well,they have a point to prove as well and are coming through as underdogs so i hope Jacques, Rassie and the whole team are gonna show less arrogance but more respect to the ENGLISH...the game of rugby tends to very quickly humble those who are arrogant and forgetful.

As a South African, this is really the first time in this RWC that I truly felt sorry for the losing team. When the final whistle blew neither of the teams had anything left in the tank, they gave it all on the field of play. It was still anybodys' game right up until the end, but unfortunately for the French there could only be one winner, and on this night it was the Bokke. Commiserations to the French, they played a majestic game of rugby.

This one was just a really good game of rugby where the outcome didn't go your way. I know it hurts. Could have gone either way.

As a French fan I feel like the competition between northen and southern hemisphere is getting tougher and tougher, and that is good news for rugby world. I cannot wait to see what these Irish lads can make next time as their team is amazing. French team is great too, and I want Scotland to be back on top too. And I hope that smaller rugby nations such as Portugal will keep rising. Let's take rugby world to the next level ! Rugby is the real deal.

The quality of rugby in this World Cup has been astounding. We’ve all seen some of the greatest games of our lives in the past few weeks. Absolutely gutted for France and Ireland. Sport is cruel at times. Congratulations to the SH teams for all making it to the semis.
I'm sure it's heartbreaking to go out by one point at home, but the French can hold their heads up high. That was rugby of the highest calibre and truly could have gone either way. That game will echo throughout history as one of the greatest ever played. I know that I speak for all South Africans when I say that the French have earned our respect. Vive la France!

I am French living in Ireland for 20 years. Both my teams are out. I didn't foresee that, even in my worst nightmares. I am devastated... Nonetheless, well done to the Bokkes, you did win that match on your experience, showing intelligence and adaptability on your strategy, including the coaching by Rassie. What a French team this is. I can really feel your anguish on this one as the game was so tight and your team so dominant at times that I thought the boks won't be able to catch them with around 10 min remaining. Huge respect for this French team and its a travesty that they had to exit at the quarters. This should have been a semi final clash and I hope world rugby can understand the damage they have done to this event by this poor draw. The forwards of the French team were tremendous and Du Pont was master General. Hard luck. The tournament will feel a bit empty without a top class team like this.

It's amazing that, yet again, the draw was made with the objective of giving England the easiest path.
SA v France and NZ v Ireland were the real semi finals.
I was dreading this match all Sunday, and I was elated at the result. But my heard weeps for France. It's criminal that they're out while Argentina and England are not. I spent all Sunday trying not to think about the silence in your heart where all the hope and joy that this world cup has brought. France are my solid B team, and I hate that they're out.

This French team you've got is the best in years however, and come 2027 they'll not only have the skill, they'll have the experience. Most of the SA players who won this game and the 2019 RWC were on the field when SA lost to Japan in 2015.

Sadly this was not the final as it was the 2 best teams in the competition against each other. Someone had to lose. Both teams were great and hats off for the Boks who had a yellow card to keep their composure. Etsebet otherwise had probably his best game ever. Reinach also did his job as always. As an Irish fan totally gutted after our loss to NZ, this absolutely incredible match drew me right back in and I was on the edge of my seat! An absolute classic and match of the tournament in my opinion. Well done to the Boks but totally feel for my French neighbours. I really wanted our great 6 Nations rivals to clinch it but my god what a match!!!

Some key actions costs us the game but man the referee i can't. Some will say the referee was good and I can't understand how. I played rugby, i follow rugby since i'm a child, for 20 years now, so I think I know the game. When the referee has all the technologies to make the right decision but decide to not use them at all anyway, despite all the obvious litigious actions, I just can't accept that. In a game where the two teams are so close, you cannot ignore this. I'm waiting for Erasmus to make a compilation for this match to explain how the referee took bad decisions.
There's already all the bad decisions in some French websites... anyway it's too late but yes SA had another player in their team called O'Keefe ... that's life

I cannot emphasize enough how Bill Beaumont and world rugby screwed up this tournament so badly and a part of me cannot dismiss this was done to benefit England.
This French team didn't deserve to go out in the quarters, either did Ireland.
The excuse was they wanted to sell tickets ahead of the football world cup, complete rubbish, it stinks of fraud.
Congrats to ABs and Boks, both certainly deserved to be in the semis.

The worst one...Kolbe is a very fast guy, but he clearly started his run before Ramos launched his run-up to hit the ball.

France did some mistakes. I mean, those kind of easy to avoid mistakes. Ramos missed 2 points for being too slow. And especially in min 72, at score 25-29, the French decided to score a penalty instead of kicking the ball outside the field. In line-outs French were better, so very likely they could have scored a try.

As a French born, though I haven't lived in France for 50 years, I 'm used to the bitter taste of defeat in World Rugby, not always fair but that's what it is, but to loose like that, at home, on front of all the fans and families is the worst feeling of my entire life hoping that one day we might lift this CUP and celebrate what France has brought up to this Holy game of Rugby. I fear I'm getting too old to ever see that happening now. It will be one of my worst memory to ever face in my last moments in life... that's what I'm feeling today.

American fan here. I love Rugby but it is the tallest midget. Yes SH teams have done very well in this world cup but sadly… no one really cares. Rugby is a third tier sport in Ireland, France and even Australia. Not even mentionning Italy or Japan.
In all honesty - The French was the better team on the day - But so glad we galvanized that last 15 minutes.

I disagree. It was four tries to three for South Africa. We played a smart game and won. A quick take kick for a try is not exactly a measure of a great team. Players were distracted whilst talking to the ref. Also, the ref was very lenient on the French with their scrum infractions, such as, turning in and not binding properly. Besides that the French had home advantage with a very hostile crowd that booed everything that went against them, and whistled during South Africa's kicks, but quietened down noticeably for the French kicks. South Africa fully deserved the win.
Up the South, 3 from 4.
But how many players play in Northern clubs?
That is a real question by the way.

Honest I thought France had our number so many times in that match. The grit and determination the French made is tap into I've seen maybe once in Bok history and that was against the Abs. Greatest French rugby team of all time, they'll probably win it in Australia given their age and experience.

@@Vegas.- Take it from South Africa who lost to Japan in 2015, were 7th in the world 2017. Took 57-0 to the ABs, got hammered by just about everyone for 2 years and won it in 2019. If we can come back from that then this monsterously talented and very young and well coached French team can come back from a 1 point loss and win it in 4 years. The only issue you face is Ireland are well positioned to kick on and New Zealand will by then have the best coach on the planet with access to some of the best players on the planet. Boks are an old team and will have massive changes, retirements and probably a new coach. If we don't win 2023 I'm not sure we'll win in Australia. I'm predicting France vs All Blacks in Australia.

The french coach was just dispicable in the comments he made about antoine du pont pist match ,saying at times the ball was not taken out fast enough ,or passed fast enough my God this man is horrible to say those things on camera for the whole world to hear ,u could have kept it for another ,if it was even true ,du pont is one the the bestcplayers in the world ,and this is how his coach speaks about him just after loosing a quater final ,shame on him ,i hope france gets a new coach ,this man is as cold as ice ,france will prevail going forward ,from an irish fan

Dupont and his team are right to complain about Ben O'Keeffe who has been appalling not just during this match, but every single one he has been the referee for in this tournament. Terrible decisions the whole way through and a lack of situational awareness that should not be allowed at this level of the game. Ruined the game despite great performances from both exceptional teams.
