I love my Aygo and I love this engine. Simple, economic and surprisingly powerful as I embarrassed few BMW's on the traffic lights already 🤣 especially 2nd gear. It's insane that it goes up to 65mph on 2nd gear and it's asking for more. I've done in my Aygo 50k in 18 months and now it has 125k on the clock. Oil and filters with no delay, brakes tyres and bulbs. That's what this car is asking for. Together with tiny request of petrol. Non stop on deliveries and I do 400 miles before it starts beeping and the last bar is flashing. Aygo ♥️♥️♥️

I had a problem with the chain. It was hanging loose. . I flushed the engine with forte . . And the problem is gone.
I think the tensioner was stuck . Now the engine is clean inside everything works as it should be 👌👌

Bought my daughter a 1krfe yaris 9 yrs ago. Rattles when cold, dont like it but this makes me feel better. Done 80k now used your channel to change coolant, changed oil yearly, and filters when required. Changed front discs once and pads and shoes. Iridium plugs at 50k. It will happily cruise at 70 and regularly gives 55-60mpg on a true 5 seater with sliding back seat. If revved it is quite nippy. If not revved it has loads torque.
No other maintenance at all and drives as good as it did when i picked it up at 19k miles. Cannot think of better combination for a learner car or someone who wants cheap reliable motoring. Channels like this are superb. Thank you sir, i would never have found the water pump drain plug. And ticking noise explanation great. When i bought it toyota diagnosed the timing chain, that was 60k miles ago!! Indeed the college i worked at the motor vehicle teachers said the same when in fact it is not at all. Citroen family too small for me but yaris with same mechanicals roomy car with slightly bigger wheels and more comfortable ride. - just my pennysworth. Point is thanks for your expertise and sharing it. I do all my daughters and own cars and bikes for basic maintenance but this gives me total reassurance, can view and review and far easier than manusls. Your willingness to share is really appreciated and for people even less skilled than me, it is simple. Love the coil video too.

Big thumbs up from me anton 👍🏼 I bought my 107 beginning of November (private buy) I test drove it all sounded great. I started her up the next morning an wouldn’t u know tap tap tap tap I really did panic that I bought a dud. So I pop by my local garage and he said the same as anton an that my 107 was in great shape for it’s age an mileage. It’s how I found this channel looking for advice about this noise plus found some great advice about a small boot leak I had an fixed on my own ☺️ fantastic channel 🙌🏻

My P107 from 2006 makes exactly the same noise, as long as it is not warmed up. The noise is louder at cold winter days than in summer, and it vanishes after a few kilometers driving, then it runs quite smooth.
Good to hear that it is nothing to worry about.
From another source I have read, that it is generally impossible or at least very difficult, to create any engine that is powerful, fuel efficient and really smooth running at the same time. So in the case of the 1kr-fe engine, a bit of harshness would be just a trade-off for its good fuel efficiency and its good torque in relation to its small displacement.
Thank you very much for your explaining!

I have the same engine in my Toyota Yaris XP13 from 2013 and was wondering about that noise for a long time. Especially in the cold days, it takes a while until the noise disappears. After a long motorway run the noise is nearly gone. You can barely hear it when hitting 4000-5000rpm. What I also suspect is that the engine runs best on 0W20 oil, as it is the recommended oil from Toyota. My engine is running on 5W30 from Shell, which is a quite good oil. I will try a 0W20 with the next inspection.
Your explanation was spot on. Thanks for that!

i read somewhere that only the exhaust side is variable on valve timing,
i only use Shell, it sound horrible on other petrol station fuels, especially on supermarket fuel,
there must be a difference, touch wood at 88k nothing has gone bad with my Aygo,
regular oil changes have avoided any sludge build up in the engine, as these are built like swiss watches,
i bought it during scrappage in 2008 / 2009 brand new for £6k
Have a look how much they want now for them now new...
the new Aygo Compact Cross Over was £17k the last time i checked, dealerships are price gouging again.
and have found if you use supermarket fuel the Aygo will make far more noise than Shell fuel.

Hi Anton, very interesting video indeed. Someone did tell me that adjusting the valve clearances helps but its apparently a very tricky thing to do on these cars. I have an 07 Aygo on 191600 miles and as it got to over 100k it stated using oil (about a litre every 2k miles) I changed the PCV valve and I haven't used any oil for last 1500 miles and improved my mpg from averaging 54mpg to 59.9mpg (tested over about a 1000 miles) It could be an interesting little video for you to make?? So glad I found this channel, recently picked up an aygo ice blue, great little car, since its got a lot colder its definitely noisy and worried me till I seen your videos, less so now as a good run really helps it, would love to know if you have a video up for some plastic trim around the radiator, as I've a broken piece on the side that I assume is creating a tapping noise when driving above 35mph, the number has taken a small hit somewhere in its time but had no cat against it and I paid a decent price for it, rev counter is next but I can't seem to get a good price and I've a leak on the left side of the inner boot, I assume is probably the rear light. Thanks for the videos and hopefully you have an answer to the loose plastic behind the bumper

I also experience differences with different oil levels. When it's near the maximum level, it's noticeably less than if it's halfway (or one-thirds) between min and max. I always assumed that whenever it's between min and max it should be fine, regardless of ticking.
However, when I found out the difference between min and max is 1,5 lt (according to owners manual) instead of 1 lt on a total volume of 3,1 l, I check it a bit more often as it means that the oil quality degrades quicker than with other cars as the content percentage of pollutants probably will be more significant than with cars having larger oil volumes.

Dimitri, Athens, Greece. about a month ago l bought a second hand 2012 citroen c1 1.0 68 hp. with 91200 km clocked which had been imported from Germany. lt was tested by a friend mechanic but it was hot and we had the windows down and didn't notice the ticking sound. Once l drove it, the ticking sound would appear when accelerating and above 1700 revs and initially l thought that it was "pinking" noise from bad petrol. l used this petrol and then filled it up with 100 octane petrol. Nothing changed so at the next fill-up l added a little bottle of Redex, engine and injector cleaner ( l think it was 90 ml ) and left for a short trip of about 350 km. and then started using it again in the city. After doing another 100 km and 3 of 6 tank bars down, l then noticed that the ticking had been reduced considerably. lf the noise was rated a 10 level, it now was down to about 3 to 4. Doing another 100 km and accelerating normally in the city, no noise is heard at all. l floor and accelerate now hard and maybe you hear a 1 or 2 level compared to the initial 10 level of ticking. L searched the internet on engine and injector cleaners and they say that it takes a while and after about 500 to 600 km for the additive to do its job. l wonder if this is all that had to be done to get rid of the ticking noise. i initially had changed the engine oil from regular to synthetic just in case the cylinders weren't oiled well and was the culprit of this piston slap but nothing happened. Reading on the internet, they say that Lucus engine and injector cleaner is the top cleaner and if l can find it, l intend to give a try once l use all the current gasoline in my tank. l can only think that there was dirt or carbon deposits in the injectors which gave maybe a one sided "spray" and after combustion, it gave a not even push but rather a one sided push to the piston and likewise, a side push to the piston which in turn created the piston slap. Since l'm not a mechanic l'd appreciate your thoughts. Kind Regards from Athens, Greece.

So if you're arguing it's the feature of this engine, then any aygo running off the production facility would have piston slap? With ours I THINK it started this noise approx. 10/15.000km ago, or I never noticed it before. Apart from the start it disappears within minutes though after getting hot and still runs smoothly after 170.000 km.
Here in the Netherlands I read threads where engines are replaced under warranty over this, or that it is at least a defect causing piston/bore wear resulting in e.g. high oil usage. So you're positive it isn't?
It at least seems by the many accounts of people it's quite common and the aygo can get old with it.
But yeah, I'm about to sell it and it's not really a USP when a buyer hears it. Perhaps I should refer your link.

This is crazy. I have a Subaru Justy IV with the 1KR-FE engine and it does tick only when I accelerate under load and it’s the loudest at 2k RPM and it goes away or become more silent when it gets up to temp. I was wondering why it does that and I was suspecting the timing chain being worn out and/or the clutch or transmission…so this video was really useful for me😁

Given the 1SZ-FE engine in this car was kind of the predecessor to the 1KR-FE and shares a lot its features, this makes sense. The oil must be 15W40 if it is ok for your winter temp...and original oil filter. This is the way my noise gone. Peugeot 107 first owner. Noise start at about 50000 km. Then i change the oil viscosity to 15w40 noise gone and now car is 98000 km. On low milage car noise is from timng chain tensioner. This hidraulic tensioner dont like thin oils i think.

My car is a Yaris (2009) with a 1KR-FE engine onboard. In the first year after purchase it was not producing ticking noises.
Also this car makes the described noise which is particularly loud in the first few seconds after starting. After about 5 seconds it already gets more quiet, but is still audible when accelerating with a cold engine which is unavoidable.
With a warm engine it is audible under heavy load.
The fact that it is loudest in the first few seconds after starting made me think that it has to do with oil pressure and perhaps conrod bearing issues, can that not be the case ? T.b.h., I was planning to have another engine put in because of the noise.
What are recommendations to follow in the case of the mentioned piston slap ? Maybe use 0W30 instead of the prescribed 5W30 to get the oil quicker around when cold ?

Hello, my wife's 3 cylinder 2010 seat ibiza(timing chain, with hydraulic tensioner) also had a ticking/rattling noise, especially when it was cold. It became worse and at some point she had a damaged engine that she had to replace. the timing chain was broken and damaged the engine severely. So i think the tensioner got clogged/ couldn't put the right tension on the chain, whereas the chain jumped the cam/ snap/jam and cause the valves to hit the pistons. So i wouldn't just sit and wait for the noise to go away, i would run a cleaner, put in new/right grade oil. Regards

These are totally different engines, The Toyota unit is bomb proof. But there is a difference between a ticking sound and a big rattle, Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠

I have a 59 plate Aygo with this engine,
I find supermarket fuel makes the noise worse, (lower octane) it's like a pinking noise,
I use Shell cheap petrol and it seems to make less noise,
I also want to point out i was getting a huge amount of timing chain rattle,
It was worse in winter, i always got my service kits from Toyota,
They supplied the oil as 5W 30 non synthetic,
After doing this for 7 or 8 years the timing chain noise got worse,
I would service every 6 months, as i found carbon building up in the engine if i left it 1 year,
Which meant the oil was saturated with carbon, carbon can block up your engine,
i read the Toyota Aygo manual, it said something interesting,
It said use 0W 20 fully synthetic oil, if you have nothing else use 5W 30,
But only do it once and go back to 0W 20 for the next oil change,
I use Petronas 0W 20 fully synthetic and the timing chain rattle disappeared straight away,
As if the engine was being held back from working correctly with thicker oil,
The timing chain tensioner has adjusters that use oil pressure i believe,
    The lesson,
Read the manual, ignore what a Toyota main dealer parts purveyor tells you,
And do the work on your own car with the correct specification parts,
Paying a garage to do an oil change is silly, they will use cheap 5W 30 normal oil and cheap crappy filters,
My Aygo is at 80,000 miles and it needed a new CV boot fitting,
I found out a grease monkey had hit it with a hammer to get more work on the next MOT,
I won't be using them again, this is the kind of garages we have to use,
It is so easy to do an oil change yourself, so many videos or buy a Haynes manual,
I am in the process of replacing my clutch on the Aygo after 11 years the pressure plate and release bearing have worn out,
I bought a genuine Toyota clutch kit at about £400, garages will fit a "chocolate" clutch that might last 6 months to 3 years for £600 ish,
My Toyota one is a Luk clutch and lasted 11 years, it hadn't failed, but was close to failing,
The only issue i had was the lower wishbone needs a scissor type ball joint splitter to pop it off,
If i can change a clutch which is a gearbox off job you can do an oil change. 💪

But on a C1 with 130,000 on the clock and no apparent service history that also uses oil (mostly burning it I suspect) is the ticking more of a concern? Would an oil additive help perhaps?

    • @aaanton11
      @aaanton11  Год назад +2

Don't bother with additives, just keep the oil level topped up it will go on forever, I look after an aygo that has over 250,000 miles on the clock still om the original engine, Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠

I have a peugeot 107. I got it straightpiped/catback system. When i put it open... you can hear a loud ticking sound. Just as in the motor. Is this because of what you explained in this video?
