In my teens I used to iron for hours for the whole family! Loved it! No one else liked it and I put my music loud and could go for two hours. Now I have a steamer and don’t iron not steam anything!

When hanging pants in clamp-style hanger, hang pants by hem when clean from the laundry. After wearing, hang pants by the waist. You will always know which garments are clean and which ones have already been worn.

To answer your question, I've never cared about ironing until recently. In fact, I never cared about consistently folding my clothes until recently. When I started downsizing my clothes and replacing my previous synthetic-material clothes with items made from natural materials the moths moved in and put holes in most of my new shirts. I've had to learn how to keep my clothes better contained (If clean: folded and stored away. If dirty: in a hamper with a lid) to keep the moths out. I have found some really good videos about diy, natural moth repellants (bay leaves, whole pepper, cloves, and cinnamon in cotton sachets) and purchased a spray product that utilizes a safe-for-people-and-pets mixture of essential oils. Vacuuming more often and using the essential oil spray has got rid of the moths. Great video and thanks for sharing!

I heard cedar is a great bug/moth repellent. Cedar oil spray or cedar wood chips, chunk of cedar wood, cedar armoires like Lane Furniture brand.

An 80 year old man showed me how to ‘iron’ a linen shirt: while damp, tug hard to stretch and straighten all the seams, hems, and parts (sleeves, collar, left front, etc). Then hang to dry. There really is a place between Starched and Slept In ☺️👍.

Okay, i was on my way out the door and heard your last question. I LOVE to iron. I think many ppl hate it bc you have to get the board out (if you even have one) and everything else. I have my ironing board always out, my iron plugged in, in my craft room.
Ironing is one of the few things in life i can do perfectly. Satisfies the perfectionist in me.
PS - The pant hangers you can buy at Bed, Bath and prob other places solve that pant-hanging problem. The pants dont shift bc rubber on the cross piece and the design is such that they will slip right off when you want. My fav closet aid.

I was a military child. Ironing was one of my “jobs” growing up. I learned to be efficient & quick with it. I did all the ironing for my roommates in college as well. And when there’s a big family wedding or celebration & we’re all in the same hotel, whoever needs something ironed runs it to my room. It’s kind of the family joke. I don’t mind. I find it relaxing. But when I only need to do one or two things, I’ll just pull out a steamer rather than the full board & iron.

I lived with my paternal grandparents as a teenager. Grandma wasn't big on ironing. She was one for buying fabrics that didn't require ironing and taking them out of the dryer slightly damp to finish drying on hangers if it was something that was going to need ironing, like my dad's dress shirts. So I really wasn't taught very well on how to iron. She did teach me, but since I didn't use it, I forgot. So my ironing method was rather slapdash. Anytime I ironed at my maternal grandma's home, she would shake her head in dismay watching me iron. She never failed to comment about my lack of training. 😹

I have clothes that don't need ironing, but still like to wear a crisp ironed shirt. I don't iron as often as I used to, but it's basically a meditation: open space, good music, good iron & ironing table, clothes & hangers. Finding a nice spray for linens (only iron pillowcases these days) and a good spray starch for clothes that benefit from it - good way to relax. Thanks Melissa! I've enjoyed your channel for 3+ years now.♡

Thank you, Melissa! Btw, please thank Chad too. After his video on folding his clothes, including underwear (your video on underwear too), I took everything out of the dresser, chest of drawers, & the armoire. Since it was all clean anyhow, I spread everything across the bed. It took a few hours bc it was both my clothes, as well as, my husband’s clothes too. After separating what belonged to whom, I began folding clothes. Different types went back in their assigned drawer spaces. Each article of clothing was ‘filed away,’ which left an incredible amount of space remaining allowing me to consolidate extra drawers’ worth of the same types of clothing. This system not only makes it easy to find our clothing, it makes it easy to mix & match, & put everything away.

Ironing - no, once I ironed everything to a very neat result. Going out in wrinkled clothes was a pure disgrace, but now still loving natural fabrics nothing else, I dont iron for months. Maybe washing machines dont wring things so harshly,? I dont use fabric softener either, I do shake and hand pull or smooth items, or give a five min tumble dry, after washing, then hang to dry as much as possible on a clothes hanger, not in scorching sun if I can use morning sun, and keep everything on hangers until it gets to the wardrobe maybe via another short tumble dry if needed. Just dont scrunch up anything during the process, and fold as soon as possible for wrinklefree clothes without ironing. Also they say your own body heat unwrinkles the fabric as you wear it. So, my grown up child sincerely believes that, and upon observations I think thats true.

I am a no ironing queen. Living in NYC my clothes always wrinkle so I stopped ironing years ago. I fold my clothes once every 3-4 months. I probably should fold more often. But I love your method. Will try it next time I fold my clothes. ❤️

I'm totally using the long garment method cos my long dresses are too long for my hanging space...also call me crazy but I really enjoy ironing. Things just sit nicer..

GREAT idea for the long items! Usually I fold the item up and through but, like the item you showed, it doesn't always work. So this is a great option 👏👏👏

Absolutely Love your channel. I have learned so much from it. Personally I have always disliked ironing, find steaming to be easier. Unless I really love an item (like your shirt), I will only purchase it if willing to get the iron out.

Awesome video, and just what I needed for my decluttering project. Thank you! Ironing? I haven’t ironed anything in over a year. My main ironing was for work, sooo…. Yeah. Interesting thing, though, just before Covid, I was fortunate enough to do quite a bit of traveling. Enough that I learned the value of no-iron (and easy-wash) clothing. I had already started switching over my wardrobe. And having extra time has not made me any happier of the iron, so I don’t see that changing anytime soon. 😆😅

I iron the top sheet and pillow cases. It’s amazing how much it makes making the bed easier, plus it’s such a meditative “chore”. I use pant hangars for pants. My rule for my closet is to use just 24 hangars. We all have too many clothes anyways. I live in a condo building with no ensuite washers and dryers so when I go down to get my drying I take hangars and hang them up on a a closet bar the strata’s go- to odd job guy . Then take them upstairs and hang them in my closet and et voila my clothes are put away. I have 2 mahogany beside tables that have big drawers, and use those IKEA cloth type organizers in them for every thing else. My kids started doing their own laundry when they were 11 and 12, I showed them how to iron their own shirts button down shirts when they needed them ironed, like for a date. 😊

I just ran across your video, Wow. Great methods. Tank tops & hoodies have always vexed me. Most of the time I just give up & do the best I can. When it comes to ironing, lets just say I avoid it at all costs. I've hated it since I was a kid & was allowed to use the iron.

I haven't done this in years, but after this I may go back to it. There's nothing so wonderful as resting your head on a lightly starched and ironed pillowcase.

I steam e’thing now. I grew up ironing but I am a steam person now. The only time I may have to get out an iron is for garments made of linen but I solved that by buying garments that are a cotton+linen blend; having the cotton there makes it so a simple trip through the dryer will remove most wrinkles 😊

I put my stuff in cubbies. I have half height baskets. Tees I fold vertically in thirds and then in half, pull out the basket, and place the front face down, then lay them in with front to the front, and put the basket back in. Pretty much the same with jeans, but fold them in thirds, tuck in the sides. This way I rotate them fairly consistently, but if I want a specific color or printed motto, it’s fairly easy to find.
