Any time an internal body part pushes into an area where it doesn’t belong, it’s called a hernia. Food travels down the esophagus when we eat, passing through a small opening (hiatus) in the diaphragm before entering the stomach. Please visit our website for more information: erikdalton.com/
A hiatal hernia occurs when the top of the stomach either rolls or slides up into this opening and becomes stuck there.
When this happens, clients begin to experience symptoms like
heartburn
esophageal spasms
inflammation
ulcers
The hiatal hernia has been called the “great mimic” because it mimics many disorders.
The causes of a hiatal hernia are speculative and unique to each individual. However, several presumed possibilities exist, including an array of mechanical causes.
There are many assessment methods for hiatal hernia, but a maneuver I have used on my clients as part of MAT is fairly simple and reliable.

Hi
Dr Dalton, thank you so much for this video.
I was going on 30 hours without being able to even swallow water. I desperately didn’t want to go to the hospital, but was running out of options. Then I found this video and pulled my stomach down as you showed and I was instantly relieved and able to eat and drink again. God bless you so much!
Way 2 go. Some can do that technique on themselves and others need supervision.
This is why I took Dr Dalton’s class, I actually did this technique on myself and it literally feels like I’m breathing better, like my lungs are getting a better inhalation than before!!
yes! I have felt this too but the next day it comes back

From my experience it's closely related with poor posture, slouching or FHP. So making more space for abdominal content by elongating the spine with expanding the rib cage is the only long term solution

Hello sir,
I have been recently diagnosed with grade 2 sliding hiatal hernia . Doctor has suggested for surgery which I am not keen to do. I live in Chennai India. Do you know who any expert who can help me with this technique?
Sir where are you from?
Thank you so much for the information! My hiatal hernia has hugely affected my quality of life for over fifteen years now. In my part of the world it borders on impossible to get surgical treatment for this regardless of severity. We're instead put on medications such as Pantoprazole permanently and on an ever increasing dosage.
Did you fix it with this technique? I got hiatial hernia this winter and it is such an internal terror.. 😒
@@laisa. I actually didn't have much luck with this technique. I did, however, stop taking a bunch of antidepressant meds a few months ago which were not working for me. The symptoms almost completely stopped and I rapidly dropped 20 lbs immediately after. I've been on and off those meds most of my life and am wondering if they've been amplifying the problem with the hernia. I do still have to watch what and how much I eat before bed in case of flare ups. I'm curious if you started any new meds this winter. Doctors seem to be completely oblivious to physical side effects :(
Omoprozole and nexum and gaviscon and tums All anti acid medicine cause estomac cancer 🛑 do cabbage juice and celery juice and alovera juice
Thank you so much, I felt immediate relief after self adjustment! As I live in Australia so can’t visit you in person, can you describe the exercises to keep the hernia down, and any other advice?
Perform the technique each day until you feel relief.
My chiropractor taught me to drink water and then jump off a step to relieve my small hiatal hernia. I have heard that gurgling sound on the first or second jumps. I hear it less often now after performing the jumps for 5 months. I am going to try this as a self massage. Thank you.
My symptoms are LPR reflux. I am using diet and medication to some effect.
An LMT with myofascial training performed this procedure. I could hear the stomach moving. She is performing broader release techniques. I am performing other modalities and getting improvement. Never eat too much at one meal.
Good for you.... mini-trampolines are also very helpful. 5 minutes a day.
@Daltonmyoskeletal An Xray Esophogram then a manometry after the myofascial treatment did not find a hernia. I cannot induce that gurgling sound when hopping. I believe that the technique worked. My LPR/Throatreflux symptoms are less.. Thank you doctor.
Now I am going to investigate the trampoline. 😊

At what time of day, you did the exercise. early in the morning ?
@@Fetherko so what are you doing now for your LPR? i have symptoms without my PPIs
Yes it works, but only temporarily so how often this should be done? And what about the enlarged hiatus?
It depends on the size of the tear in the diaphragm. It may take several weeks for the tear to heal and sometimes this technique is of little help.
Is the gist that you need to keep it down long enough for the tear to heal? How does one keep it from moving back up?
Two questions...
Does this cause discomfort or soreness afterwards?
Is this to be done on an empty stomach?
Okay, this is incredibly useful information. I wonder if doing this followed up with "frequency specific micro current" would actually help the enlarged hole within the diaphragm heal up?
Give it a try.
Theracane with blunt end is perfect for self adjustment. Can get correct angle and good leverage.
Are you meaning the curved end or the other end with the little ball?
I'm 76 and have had food "piling up" (the only way I can describe it) since about 1994, which I really dont feel until it becomes nearly a choking sensation. I've asked many medical people how to handle this and no one has a clue. I cant vomit it up, or wash it down with fluid. in fact it feels much worse if i put even small amounts of fluid over the food that's stuck. I've tried many ways to deal with this and thus far had no success. Each time it happens I have to stop the meal and wait. There's nothing else that fixes it other than time. I just tried a self massage as shown and still can't feel that any food has moved - now stuck for well over an hour. Any ideas would be very appreciated.
Jumping on a trampoline . Search for the video on the channel called “critical bench” about hiatal hernia. The only thing that works for me when I need to deal with this fast.
Diaphragmatic breathing works well to keep symptoms to appear in the first place
I find a bit of a walk around does make it ease quite a bit? Long term try smaller meals if possible, more often. Had this for 6 years or more now.Ive also found since I've cut down on stodgy foods, bread, pasta and potatoes has helped a lot.c
Yes, I teach my clients how to pull the stomach down at home and advise drinking a glass of water and bouncing 5 minutes on a mini-trampoline.
This was really helpful. Thank you.
Glad it was helpful!
So is this a quick fix or can this eventually fully fix the issue? Also a GI told me that by doing the pressing technique it can make the hernia even bigger cause the hole could stretch. Is that true? I mean I know doctors never support doing your own healing but its worth asking. Also how many times should this be done? If successful, how do we get the stomach to stay down? If it keeps riding back up isn't that called a sliding hernia then? Can this technique actually cause a sliding hernia? 100 questions, I know but I think I'm not the only one interested. Thanks.
Good questions. Wish he'd answer
Yes, my clients come in once a week and I will spend half a session doing diaphragm, rib and hernia work. Sliding hernias are actually the easiest type to correct but the client/patient must be given home retraining exercises so they can help pull it down until the hiatus heals.
What are those retaining exercises?
@@remi.voltaje Thats what he showed in the video
How exactly does the hiatus heal? If it's a sliding hernia, isn't the opening that allows part of the stomach to slide upward already stretched? Thank you for any information.@@daltonmyoskeletal
I've been suffering with acid reflux for about 2 years and it started to get a lot worse and I found out that its actually a hernia causing it, I tried this what Erik is showing us and I felt a warmness go over my body like something had gone back into place and within a few minutes I felt great, I don't want to think I'm in the clear but honestly, I feel like my stomach is intact again, wow. One question though, I think my hernia is due to exercise and poor posture my diet is pretty clean and im only 34 years old could this be a permanent fix ?
How do you feel now, have you no longer had symptoms?
Whats ur meal plan everyday
Hey I'm also suffering from same symptoms, what did you do for feel good
If you are finding success pulling the stomach down, continue doing it each day and maybe 5 minutes on a rebounder. It takes time for the tear in the esophagus to heal in some people.
@9mully Did you heal 100 percent or you still have it
How do you know if you’re doing it right?
Often you'll hear a gurgling sound but not always. You should be able to feel the release with your fingers and typically the client will sigh or take a deep exhale of relaxation.
Thank you
How do I find someone like you in my area to help me? What are the credentials I need to look for in someone please. I had gallbladder laperoscopy surgery 13 days ago and started having nausea a few days after. Saw my Chiropractor who is 40 mins away. He found hiatal hernia with a muscle test. He pulled stomach into place 2 days ago and nausea went away. He showed my husband how to do it. Yesterday when I felt nauseous, we miscle tested it and it was back 2 times. The nausea gets unbearable. My husband works today and my brother muscle tested it. Its out again. I have tried to put in place, it won't stay. What type therapist does this.
Question sir, can I do I a couple of time until I feel relieved or just stop at 1 try
Typically, I just pull it down once per session using both techniques
After you've done that to her, how long will it be before the stomach goes back up? And also, if she had reflux will it stop that? Would her reflux have instantly disappeared?
No, it's an ongoing process depending on the chronicity of the individual.

Hi loved the video on HH question how can you do a self massage? Do you recommend the water and jumping? I may have to have a hip replaced so jumping is a tough move. Thank you. Maria
I teach a self-help home retraining technique in workshops but it's impossible to describe without supervision. Min-trampolines are very helpful and shouldn't bother your hip.
Hello Doctor, I have small HH/ GERD and just wondering how many visits do I need? Its more like once a month treatment? As needed? Please advise
Thanks tremendously for sharing your knowledge Doctor,I appreciate this exercise 👏👏👏. Well, i was diagnosed with a sliding hiatal hernia (mentioned not complicated) i feel a discomfort in the morning after breakfast.i have no acid reflux, no vomiting ،but i burp a lot and i feel a weight like a gravity in my stomach that causes me a panic attack. When i feel this sensation, i don't know whether I am going or coming 🤪 as if I'm gonna faint ,Doctor. Will this bring about a serious disease?? Does this problem cause weight loss? .Sorry if my comment is a bit long. I found no solution,i need your help, please. i live far from your region and English is not my native language.May God bless you 🤲. Waiting for your response 🙄.Thanks a million
Would be hard to know without a proper diagonsis. I recommend seeing a PT and doctor first, then finding a treatment. Wish there were more certified MMTs around the world to help you! Good luck on your healing journey and don't give up!

I don’t like any invasive touch but I’ve had this done it’s not bad. Worth a try and you could always set it up to request that they stop immediately if it bothers you. I found it gentle enough.
Also, as another person commented: see Pam Fox, she's on RUclips, very good self-care strategy/tips.
Very especially if you go to Houston chiropractor but I was willing to get relief. ❤

It should not be uncomfortable post-treatment unless there is still trapped gas. Best on empty stomach but should be ok.
