- The Utah nurse who was roughly handcuffed for refusing to let police draw blood from an unconscious patient has agreed to a $500,000 settlement over the incident. Bodycam and hospital surveillance video show the July altercation when Detective Jeff Payne of the Salt Lake City Police Department showed up at the University of Utah Medical Center seeking to take a blood sample from an unconscious patient. InsideEdition.com's Mara Montalbano ( / maramontalbano ) has more. #InsideEdition
SHE WAS FOLLOWING THE HOSPITAL RULES.
Yep, good nurse. She would've gotten fired if she didn't.
Lincolnator actually in the video I think it says that she got fired from the Department unless I'm mistaken it maybe the officers I don't know
Bo Moran no it was the officer she was not fired she was following policy
Its not only hospital rules but its completely illegal to take your blood without a warrant or consent.
Dark Will yeah ..
She hasn't commited crimes wtf she is just doing her job being a cop doesn't give them extra rights.
RonieC_ThatsMe _916 actually they do...
@@Sythorize Nope
Thanks for stating the obvious
Good for her.... $500k lesson might keep them from abusing people in the future.
Chuck Keough and where that money coming from?
the cop only lost their job and had to pay nothing. its the tax payers that ultimately had to pay. the sad part is the cop turned around and found another position somewhere else.
Chuck Keough what about shooting them?!
Chuck Keough But what do you think would have happened if the nurse was black? 🤔 Would she have gotten her settlement or would people root for the cop?
crimsoneyes419 ...omg why does race have to come up with every damn topic?
That's great she was treated very wrong. He had no right to do her like that. I hope he is fired.
He was fired.
Sabrina Thompson He was fired, and rightfully so.
what dose a settlement mean?
It means that she settled for money so that she wouldn't sue.
Sabrina Thompson he did get fired it's just that they didn't put it on the new cuz u know people don't want u to know anything
It's so ironic she was following hospital policy that the Police who arrested her agreed to regarding suspects/ victims and yet they get all butthurt when someone actually follows the rules they put in place and wrongfully arrest her. I'm so glad this whole incident was recorded and the woman got her justice she deserved
That cop treated her like a child.
I saw this some time ago.. And now that i see she got 500k im so so happy
TheNikolasu
Same
Same here
TheNikolasu Yeah she really tried to protect that patient. What a nurse!
I need to buy that woman a drink. Thank you for being a nurse and a upstanding citizen. We need more like you.
After her settlement she can buy us 1 🤷🏾♂️😂
hahah he got fired thank god, take that power tripper!!!!
Snake , I agree Thank God. I hope other power Trip cops learn from this, but I bet they won't.
500,000$? I could use that 😂
Everyone could.
Well, except for Bill Gates and those other billionaires of course.
Aaron Glisson Az
Aaron Glisson She doesn’t deserve so much
Aaron Glisson Yeah you could
Music Is Food For The Soul no, they will just donate it.
Good. I'm glad she got that money. She was completely humiliated and treated unfairly for just doing her job!
Carly Elmer You don’t deserve money for being falsely arrested...
She was a poorly respected “nurse”at the U, so don’t feel too bad for her.
She deserves so much more for what she endured.
I hope that detective got fired and now I hope he is saying “hello and welcome to Walmart”
Joey boy S. Haha
He wouldn’t even be able to get a job at Walmart now .
I hope he’s applying for food stamps
I would not want the bad former cop to have any job where he would be dealing with people in the public.
Walmart won’t hire him because this guy has a record.
Those cops who arrested should have been terminated and ban from being a cop for life. They violated her rights and try to violate an unconscious person without a warrant.
Not to mention they arrested her while she was caring for other patients
Wow this is insane !
Heidi G. I like your profile pic
Connor k thx?
all that settlement should be from jeff payne's own pocket
OKAYYYY
True!
I really wish every settlement from police brutality could come from the officers' wages.
That would put alot of officers in check!
This video put me in tears. This woman was following every rule that she was required to follow. This officer last name was pain. And that’s all he gives to people. Shame on him and I hope he never gets another job
What bothers me more than anything else is nobody else in that hospital bothered to protect her from this abuse from this police officer they just stood there
GOOD. This woman is a hero & the patient that she protected should be honored. She is what every patient hopes for in a care giver. Get that money, girl! You deserve it.
She deserves more. I've had therapy for the past 3yrs as a result of the SLC police department. I called them to respond to my report of a robbery at my home. When they arrived I approached one of the squad cars 2 let them know I was the 1 who called 4 assistance. Well the 3 male officers jumped out of their cars with guns drawn, pointed at my head and pinned me 2 the ground. I was thrown in the back of a squad car for 2hrs as they hatched out with dispatch that I was the victim not the suspect. Never once did I receive an apology, in fact, they tried to ticket me as evading police because I tried to resist their arrest by telling them I was the one who called for their help. 3 police men piled on top of a 130lb female medical assistant, that gave me PTSD of the police to the point that I'm terrified every time I see one. This department is corrupt.
*Can a cop roughly handcuff me too*
Bob McCoy a hot cop I hope
Uh-Uh, No Way
DJCarrotKing and, sadly, race.
Bob McCoy eew!
He ILLEGALLY arrested her, he had no right, which is why she had a lawsuit and and won
She was so professional. She took all of the steps required. I wish she would have received more money.
You may arrest me at any time
GAMERBOY Rob a bank
GAMERBOY, wth is wrong with you?
Yes I am so glad justice was served. Felt for you Alex when I saw the actual video. Takecare.
She deserves more money, this situation can create stress and anxiety, sleep deprivation, agitation, hair loss problems, eating disorders, and others. $500k is nothing compare to what she'll have to deal with. So unfair....ugh!
Who writes $500,000 as 500G rather than 500k
$500,000.00 is actually the correct penmanship peasant.
She's could've got more money!!
no
Htoo Htoo don't b greedy
She took the first offer should’ve kept going
Htoo Htoo Ya I agree but then people would of said she doesn’t deserve any money because she just wanted the highest amount of money not even caring about the case
She made out fine for the way they treated her she still has her job that she obviously loves and she's got a nice chunk of money.
Be grateful for what you get that's for sure you know what they say about wanting more..
Thank God I have
been waiting for this news.. And it finally came
Same
Hi Im Mina I the have nice channel
Hi Im Mina lol I meant to say you have e a nice sample and I subbed already
Hi Im Mina NICE CHANNEL
Hi Im Mina auto correct...
This abuse happens all the time. As dramatic as nurse Alex' arrest was, the real story here was the corruption of the police department trying to, illegally, get dirt on the truck driver to help the department in any civil suit the driver's family may have filed against the department for their role in causing the fatal crash. What has been done to prevent this going forward?
John Wilburn Exactly
“I can’t be under arrest! I’m short a unit clerk and covering 2 lunch breaks!”
This was her first thought.
Alex is the example of good practice and how to be a good person. Even when it hurts.
Jan. 9, 2019---Thanks for the video as I always wondered how this turned out.
There should be more people and nurses like her. Standing up for what right and doing her job.
the police sounds like a little kid who didn't get his way, thus pulling out the arrest card even though he had no right to. tbh with how often american police get called out for misconduct, you would think they would be stricter with who they give this sort of authority to. shame.
It makes me sad that all the security officers in the hospital did nothing to stop the police officer
they aren't crazy
Do security have guns on them, What would that idiot cop have done. Or started. Even though they left them holsted, Im sure the idiot would of arrested the hospital.
Security gaurds have no power
Lol they didn’t want to get arrested either
Agreed.
Glad for body cams
Damn that's one of the dumbest reasons that someone got arrested! I feel bad for her
How much is being spent to pay for legal fees from the 500k?
40% plus expenses. She'll probably walk away with about half.
If it had gone to jury I think she would have got at least 5m. And an apology.
I feel so bad for her. ♡
Good for you.
Damn get me handcuffed by a police! I need me some Bojaaaaaaaaaaaangleeeess.
Jeez, Back in the 70's getting ruffed up & handcuffed meant you had a good night. Now, It will get you 500,000 dollars. lol
Still is 😏😂
RedNiNo Fioz She'll have a good night too.
But that's for a completely different situation... Stuff like that still Happens lmao
As it should have, then too.
She was clearly calm and trying to do the right thing by both her employer and her legal obligation.
The officer could hear her employer on speaker phone and should have continued to try to seek a resolution, calmly.
There were just SO many things wrong with this situation.
The officer seemed to display a very entitled attitude, which makes me concerned about the accepted culture of his department.
He was reacting to hearing about his colleague's car accident, rather than being sent by superiors in an official capacity.
He was incorrect about the policy anyway.
Hid attitude and discussion with another colleague "behind the scenes" was appalling, and shows he was unconcerned about his behaviour or any potential ramifications, and quite willing to take illegal steps to cover his tracks if needed.
Were you even born in the 70s?
bro I like her for being honest and that she got her justice. "I'm grateful that this landed on my laps."
She’s going to be wobbling to the bank for that payday.
Glad to see our tax payer money being use efficiently and going to settling rough arrests instead of schools, roads, or better public facilities
Im sure people turn to be jealous like they did to the United Asian guy
United Asian Guy?
The man who was dragged off a united airlines plane after refusing to give his seat up.
He got a settlement from the airline but they didn’t say how much it was. Probably around $100,000
Should have got off the plane when ask! He made a fool of himself.
RedLight GreenArrow that's a multi million dollar settlement. He was abused and physically harmed.
She deserves a lot more than that.
That's a nurse, she deserves actually more.
Should have when for the 1mil
That's so sad
That was awful....
GET THAT COIN BIH
Justice. Is. Served.
No. The only time cops receive justice is when they receive justice like they did in Dallas. "Only good cop is a dead cop"
Thank you for not allowing them to draw blood from a unconscious patient.
This scary poor lady
ᵍᵒᵒᵈ ᶠᵒʳ ʰᵉʳ
Angel last name howd you make your letters so small?
His penis is small
Glad he got fired and she got a settlement. No man has any right to touch a woman like that
Simone Umba no PERSON has any right to touch another PERSON like that
It's not about man and woman, it's about power abuse
So in your logic a man has no right to brake a women's bone but a women can break a mans bone or hurt him? How about we just say no one has the right not certain genders. Sexist ugh. :/
Rosace Scare I was going to comment that, thank you
Feminist
Hero. We need more workers like her.
I am so happy for you
I wouldn’t have accepted anything less than $10,000,000! And I would want the police department to pay the taxes and attorneys fees on my estate!
rochelle123ist
Lol. Okie dokie.
She was obeying the hospital rules and the law. The over zealous cop frustrated over not getting her to do what he wanted over stepped his authority and falsely arrested her. Ironically had she done what the cop wanted she would have been out of a job and finished in her field of nursing.
In this instance the settlement was correct and not a frivolous waste of money as we have seen others get settlements who were not entitled and were criminals.
Justice. Finally!
Imagine through the intercom "Nurse WUBBLES please report to ICU."
theres our tax money gone again
Lend me sOmE Ca$hHh!!!
Good for her that she protected the patient per hospital policy.
Jesus can't he just a better police officer I would never ever want anyone to go through the pain she went through
I can buy 435 iPhone X with that ca$h
Ernesto Estrada uh you mean 500? Math is a good skill to have lol.
Brandon Harrison and no the iPhone is 1,149 $$$$$ so I can't get 100 you're so dumb 😘
If I was a white woman... 500k only? lol...
Elite Exposure why you have to throw race around man?
If she was black she'd get nuttin LOL
Elite Exposure Nah, if she was black she'd probably be arrested lol
Why is race involved with everything, please tell me.
Uri Talaroo oppression
He damn sure won't be doing that ever again
Good for her.
I guess her white privilege card is broken.
She was protecting the patient, whose race we don't know from the report.
cops roughed her up more than that parkland school shooter but $500g?! did she get injured?
yeah... u can clearly hear her say they were hurting her... and the angle of her arm was obviously painful... but the injury was to her rights as well... they violated her civil rights... 4th amendment says no unlawful search and seizure... she definitely got seized...
I think it has more to do with the fact that they were trying to force her to break the law.
You're missing the point. The point isn't "give her 500k for being attacked" (though she absolutely deserves the money). *The point is, "penalize the city 500k for allowing one of their officers to wrongfully attack an innocent citizen."* If the city was just given a verbal dressing down, nothing would change. But losing 500k will sting. They WILL take steps to ensure none of their people end up costing them that amount of money again.
Not really. In these cases cities figure it's easier to write a check to make it go away.
Tampatec She got humiliated for doing her job. Pain and suffering, ir was traumatic. Injury would have put it over a million.
Thank you. GOD BLESS you
Handcuffs aren’t supposed to feel nice its supposed to hurt a bit wtf is wrong with people these days roughly handcuffed pfff
Don’t you understand that she didn’t break the law...she should have never been arrested. It was not detective’s right or place to place her under arrest because he had a tantrum. His issue is with the hospital and policy not her
No No still he had NO reason to arrest her she was following protocol
*Ok. So according to you, Its a good thing that the cuffs is hurting a little bit when an innocent nurse gets cuffed? I mean, fact is that she was totally innocent.*
500K? Thats way to much. 10K is sutable, no 500K
BillW17 10k isn't justice though
Joey Moursalian 500K isnt either justice. Its selfishness.
tru
I agree
She'll probably use a good portion on legal fees.
Good for her
First #1
Well you can thank her for having your taxes go up just a bit more this year....she couldn’t be satisfied with him losing his job , she had to go the good ole Merica route....💵💰👀
Princess Chewie
What?
She didn't cause the cop to loose his job. His bosses fired him. She DID NOT go after the city suing them. THEY offered the money in a settlement to AVOID a trial, were she easy would have got around 6 million $ in damages. The city was smart, took theead and solved it. If she would have hired a lawyer, the lawyer would have insisting on a trial, because everyone knew that she would be given millions. So the city council actually saved the tax payers a large sum of money.
7.756.935 Reread your comment....lol
She deserves more
Damn I bet she's never been so happy about being arrested in her life
Just wow
Good for her!
What scares cops more than anything is finding out where they live.
The patient also has a law suit! Hope he sought out a lawyer!
It should be much more.
They did way more than just handcuff her roughly. They falsely arrested her with no crime committed
What gets me is that this cop is also a paramedic he should have known better.
If I were her, I’d repeatedly tell him I’m going to sue him for everything he’s got.
Quick someone be my cameraman. And point me in the direction of the most aggressive cop. I have a lot of student loan debt to pay lol
Good for her that was so wrong
Her lawyers got half of that.
Good for her!!!
Too low for the trauma she experienced.
That's bad ass. Good for you.
LMFAO. Her last name makes me lol
500k?? Wtf.....took the money instead of going to court to fight the justice system. Some hero.
Wow that cop was outta line. She was following hospital policy and she was telling him politely. What an impatient, unprofessional officer
Yes , true .. I am doctor and without consent one cannot take blood unless it's a suspect or a criminal or they have a warrant... Even after MLC is done still blood is taken by nurse or the emergency medicine / medicine / surgery / obgy / opthal/ ENT / MBBS intern all doctors
Officer was fired. His superior who ordered him to arrest her? Nothing.
