Sneak Peek - Hyundai Kona. Can Hyundai do it again?

  • Hyundai have been very busy of late. After the success of the Ioniq 5 and the warm reception received by the Ioniq 6, they have now turned their attention to their small electric crossover, the Kona. We always liked the Kona, but it did have its flaws. The rear was a little cramped, some of the interior plastics feel short of class best, and whilst decent to drive, it lacked the refinement of others in its class, and also its cousin, the Kia eNiro. But now the Kona has grown up. Has it addressed its shortcomings? We will have to wait until we subject it to a full AutoEV road test to answer all the questions, but we can at least take a Sneak Peek at it first and start to get some idea if they can do it again.

Way better looking than the old Kona and far more interesting than its Niro cousin

Can't wait for the new Kona to become available in the UK. Not because I want to buy one but because it will depress the used values of the current model & add extra supply as people trade in old models for new. That's when I will look to buy a 21/22 reg Kona at hopefully a sensible price for our first EV. Prices for new EV's are nuts.

This car is on my wish list. Yes it is more expensive than an MG4 but it looks so much better. The MG already looks dated inside and the screens are nowhere near as good as the Kona’s. The Kona will have a longer range with a slightly bigger battery and more efficient drive train.
I much prefer real buttons for the dashboard controls. Faffing about with controls on a screen in a moving car is a safety issue. It has already been proved that using a phone on the move is dangerous (and illegal) so what is the difference? To make matters worse some screens are fiddly to use.
Well done Kona and thank you AutoEV for this review. Good job. 👍

I do not know about other countries, but in the US, not all Hyundai dealers are authorized to work on EVs. I hope they fix this because I think Hyundai makes the nicest-looking EVs for under 60K US. I think an Ioniq 5 would look great next to my Model Y in the garage.

What a shame, a real missed opportunity. I am pleased to see a revamped, modern interior with lighter coloured materials, but I hate the creases and wrap around, almost side on lights. Is it me or does this 'new' Kona have the same range, same pathetically low charging speed and motor power as our 2019 first run Premium car?

A nice improvement over the original Kona. Although the placement of the front and rear light clusters seem very susceptible to damage in slow/parking type prangs.

Reminds me of a cross between the front of a Kia Soul and rear of an EV6, with that swooping up line along the rear sides, up to the top of rear screen. Like it though, and hope to see your driving impressions soon. Electrifying have just done theirs. Look forward to seeing what prices are in Ireland. Might be timely to trade in the Soul next year.

22:36 Good overview of the car which is on my shortlist of my next EV
I echo(pardon the pun )the general impressions and improvements from the existing model which I had as a loan for a while
Look forward to seeing driving reviews

Really smart upgrade from Hyundai....I currently have the original Kona Electric and am awaiting delivery of an ID4.....😮...the new Kona was no longer available on our company list....went for the ID 4 as needed a.large boot to carry wheelchair.s....guess I will have to stick to Android Auto 😅.....for personal purchase have pretty much decided on Ioniqs now....great review Brian...looking forward to.the road test....the rear space is a real improvement

I'll probably wait for the Ioniq 4 or EV4. It seems more of a facelift rather than a real improvement. Pity really, not enough for me to part with my E Niro which is still a brilliant car.

Great review I love the latest model however the price range between £30-40k is well above my budget, these EV’s need to be starting around the £20k mark if they want buyers like myself.

Well, I don't know. I am definitely not a fan of this new design. I have a 2020 Kona, and I chose that when this current generation Kona was arrived to our dealers. I like that my 2020 Kona have those "details", a pattern in the front "grill". And that facelifted Kona's face, looked "empty" to me. Here this trend continues, unfortunately to me. I like the fact that Kona now nave a normal HeadUp display, I like V2L option. I like an air vents and a seat heaters for rear passengers. I like the boot space, which in my Kona is li-itle bit too small to me. But my wife is happy about the size of a car, and she is a main user of that car. IMHO.

Sunroof is an improvement, the interior is a huge improvement. Charging speeds still rather slow but less important than people think.
Not spectacular enough to make me upgrade my 2020 version, and pricing is pretty close to Tesla model Y so if I was changing that might take the win instead.

thanks for the review, i have a question. Where the infotainment is, the plastics in front are with good quality or cheap ? Because i have Bayon and the plastics are very hard and not very good quality. How is with Kona?

Let’s hope the front end traction is better the old one constantly wanted to spin it’s wheels. Look at the gaps in the wheels arches you could get a small town in there.

Both the ev-only Hyundai models have modern, crisp minimalist styling whereas the ice-based models just look overstyled with lumps, bumps and bulges everywhere; I find their whole ice range hideous.

  • @clipsonplextorfield3230

it cant get anny uglyer. To mannyy head and rear lights and placed in the most ugly places posible.
the best shot to have a look at this ugly duck is its side then you can clearly see the mistakes made with placing the lights.
For me there is a new king in the ugly department and the Fiat multipla must step down.
And what dos this bring to the table vs older versions? Faster charging, bigger battery/more range, better route planning????,
