Thank you for all the information! I've been planning my first build and I was needing as much info as possible on this motherboard. It has everything I need and more. You covered all of my doubts. Thanks again!
There is information from several sources that this model of the motherboard has significant problems with the DRAM and power circuits. However, this motherboard looks really great aspecially for this price.

@@musek5048 I didn’t keep links for myself, but there are several threads on the MSI's forum and Reddit. There are also several videos about this in the rus segment of RUclips. Thank you very much for this informative and clear review, doing my first build upgrade alone so having the exact motherboard get broken down by area was very useful. I've been running on ancient gear for about a decade now with the exception of my graphics card and have gotten by with good graphics and decent frame rate on games as advanced as Cyberpunk and Hogwarts Legacy on an Intel Core i5-7500 CPU and an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 (MVP of PC). But no matter how I tried to make it work I couldn't get Space Marine 2 to function on my gear, so I bit the bullet and made the new setup around this motherboard and I don't know if it'll be like putting on glasses for the first time but honestly I'm excited to see everything I've been missing out on and more that that everything I'll be able to finally run. TL:DR Thanks for the summary of the Motherboard, helped me make my new PC so I can play Space Marine 2.
don't forget that the 3060 is a pcie gen 4 card and this board is only PCie gen 3 so you won't get the full perfromance from it, but it will be close. Ideally a B550 board would be more fitting and offer better upgrade path for the long term.
@@mikesunboxing Thank you, I still have time to swap it over and return the other board since it just arrived. I appreciate your guidance on the matter and hope you have a great day, thank you once more 😁.
Does the motherboard support headsets that also double as microphones? At 12:20 you talked about the highlighted red one being for speakers and audio. If I plug my headset+microphone into that port will I have access to the microphone? Also if there is a port designated for headset+microphone, will there be a dip in sound quality? Many thanks! I really appreciated the video!!
yes this will support loads of different setups. If your headset has a single TRRS jack you will need to get a splitter to make that TRS standard so you can plug the headset part into the earphone socket and the mic part into the mic socket - hope this makes sense?
I'm wondering whether these are worth £65 here in 2024? I believe with a BIOS update they take the 5000 series Ryzens. I'm also wondering about the motherboard holes for screwing into the stand-offs. At 8:25 it's missing solder on the contacts, I think. But why do these holes even have soldered contacts? Does it ground anything?
£65 maybe, although recently the B550 tomahawk was on offer for £79.99 refurbished and the b550 gaming plus is pretty much always £100 and these boards will offer more in terms of longevity and upgrade paths, but depending on your needs £65 seems okay
@@mikesunboxing Yes, for my own PC I went with the B550 Tomahawk. I'm now penny pinching for a friend, though I generally recommend a good quality motherboard, even within tight budgets...

Of the b450 boards the msi tomahawk and gaming plus and carbon ac are the best out there but for overclock the 3000 series really needs more phases on the vrm

@@myytti16 hmmm interesting, its $30 more though, what would i be gaining other than better overclocks? my goal from the start was to upgrade my 4570 over to ryzen and i was planning on keeping it as cheap as possible to which i found out was a horrible idea because of how much performance you throw away by cheaping out on mobo's for the ryzen chips. so after talking with a few people on here and a couple forums they've all recommended me the tomahawk max. I mostly use the pc to game with a rx580 and just your usual media stuff. I WOULD like the option to upgrade to something like a 3700x or 3600 but i dont really NEED that power at this point. so what do you think? so far i had in mind the 1600AF i just got, tomahawk mobo, team t force delta 3200 16gb, and a new case because mine is an old boring antec and has a dent lol. Thanks for the unboxing and review Mike. It's a nice choice for mid budget. I'd like to see a review of the AORUS X570 Elite WiFi. It's my candidate for a future upgrade (w/ a R7 3700X). Thank you!

I don't care about lighting, Aesthetics wifi and all that jazz. Thank you in advance
Mike, you might want to update this video about the TPM and windows 11. I just bought one of these for Christmas and am really excited about upgrading from AM3 to the AM4 platform... the main problem I have right now is the compatible processors... the manual doesn't specify the exact models and I'm finding some A8-AM4 processors for dirt cheap but don't know if they are compatible with the board. I don't OC so that's no problem, but don't want to spend too much money on the processor... I'm currently quad-core, and want to stay that way as the unit is used primarily as a household computer that will have 2 DVD-RW drives for disc copying and basic burning... and some gaming... I really enjoyed you motherboard tour... thanks!
thanks John. To find out the supported processors the manual is rubbish, head over to the msi website and look on the compatibility pages. I think with a modern bios that the a series processors might have been dropped, and to be honest they are not great and very slow comparitively. I would suggest the 2200G or 3200G if you can find one, maybe even risk CEX for one
I just ordered the Ryzen 5 5600G for less than $250.00 US looking forward to getting this build done.... I want to get this system up and running.... I'm putting in a Radeon HD 7450 GPU to run on this system, have a geforce GTX 460 1GB and it just does do the trick... tested it in another system and the video and audio was schetchy. FPS kept jumping around and the audio kept dropping off... ran XP based games with no problem, but video... a minimum of 2GB is needed for smooth running videos. wish me luck!
Hey, Mike... thanks for the video! Awesome! So the only difference between the Tomahawk Max and the Gaming Plus Max is the USB Type C? Are the VRM's different? CAD$144.00... not bad, but not great.
Nice board. My only real gripe is that MSI likes to use black/red (granted it's their color scheme) too much. It's very limiting in the colors you can use in a build with tempered glass panel cases. The boards from MSI that I've used was the Pro Carbon editions for that reason. But you're also paying a premium for the Pro Carbons. I've been using Asus ROG Strix lately though. I just prefer their software, aesthetics and their beefier VRMs more. But MSI is pretty good too. The only boards I've ever encountered issues with is Gigabyte. I've had or have known people who have had issues with several of their boards. Asrock is pretty solid boards also.
Hello. I'm new to pc tech but I'm planning to build one soon. I have a already bought this exact Mobo but I've ordered a ram with a speed of 3600mz.Will it still work in the motherboard? And if so how much of the speed will it support?
Currently running a A320 board. With a Ryzen7 2700. Rtx2070. Still getting bad & drops. I believe it’s my board not being able to provide the power to my CPU. Upgrading to this board reckon it would be a good gaming performance increase?
yes that setup probably deserves a better motherboard but also consider your power supply - that can also make a big difference with a quality power delivery

Was the box to this originally sealed by clear plastic/taped closed? I'm just curious because I ordered one from online and the shipping box was glued at the tabs, but the exception wasn't with the exception of the product box itself.
I see. Damn that sucks for me, because no matter what they'd just point the finger at me. Alright, it seems that I'm going to learn an inconvenient costly mistake I made is going to rage into a video where I launch this board into a woodchipper just for personal satisfaction to see it can no longer trouble me. However, as I'm realizing more and more, Fate just does a person dirty, no matter what and in my case it had to be the motherboard, the last piece that I needed to get and no matter how I may take a different view of it, it just wasn't meant to be for me at least, to achieve that level of content or normality. No I'm stuck cursing the 1st place that (INSERT SELECTIVE FOUL LANGUAGE HERE) sigh, alright well thanks for the info. Sigh, my apologies for the rambling, but my 1st system build didn't turn out as expected and as much as I'd like to just forget the whole motherboard thing, I can't because there's too many little things that currently just have me reeling back and forth and I wish, the information would be as easy as opening a book to read, but even the manual that came with it is in 2 languages other than English, thus adding to my level of frustration and discontent mutate into a seething hatred of no tolerance or forgiveness, as I'm now cursed by this MOBO. I'd give a list of things that bothers me about it, but I just had to vent after seeing that there was no saving grace from this at all, including the box it was finally put in before hitting shelves. Death by speeding Locomotive is favored, but nope, hopefully I was able to satisfy the drama queen within me, so I can stop crying like a lilbytch. Again, thank you for the reply.

Hello, thanks for the video it was pretty detalied, im planning on building my first pc, will this components be allright?
AMD RYZEN 5 3600
MSI B450 GAMING PLUS MAX AM4
GIGABYTE GEFORCE GTX 1660 SUPER OC 6G

Thank you for all the information! I've been planning my first build and I was needing as much info as possible on this motherboard. It has everything I need and more. You covered all of my doubts. Thanks again!
Glad I could help!
There is information from several sources that this model of the motherboard has significant problems with the DRAM and power circuits. However, this motherboard looks really great aspecially for this price.
care to share those sources? im stuck now deciding between a tomahawk max or this gaming plus max. the only difference i can visually see is just better vrm's on the tomahawk.
@@musek5048 I didn’t keep links for myself, but there are several threads on the MSI's forum and Reddit. There are also several videos about this in the rus segment of RUclips. I also chose between this motherboard and Tomahawk for the R5 3600 and I'm ordered Tomahawk. Not so much a difference in price to risk it.
@@horugvaua actually i just finished watching hardware unboxed's video on the 3950x with budget b450 mobos and the tomahawk surprised the hell out of me. I'm sold lol

Brilliant review. Thanks Mike.
Glad you enjoyed it - thanks for watching :-)
I love this MB! it works with the low end CPU's and 3rd gen CPU's. Awesome MB!!
thank you so much I thought I couldn't update the bios without a cpu Thank you so much.

@@mikesunboxing But do I have to install windows on that Motherboard?
@@Yeaits9cm you have to install windows on all motherboards :-)
Great review! Was just wondering if this board has a wireless wifi connection or do you have to purchase a wifi card?
Yes you do need to buy a wifi device if you need wifi
i just received my 1600AF and was planning on buying the Tomahawk max. do you really feel the extra 15 bucks would be worth it? i do plan on upgrading to a 3000 series later on so i want to make sure i get the mobo that will handle the overclocks better.
Of the b450 boards the msi tomahawk and gaming plus and carbon ac are the best out there but for overclock the 3000 series really needs more phases on the vrm
@@mikesunboxing so at that point just jump ship to x570? or could i possibly get away with using, say, a 3600x with a good OC on a B450? although i do want to upgrade later on i dont feel like i would ever need anything beyond a 3600 or 3700 but if my situation changes i can always just swap boards if the need is there. I'm waiting on tax money to come in so i wanna have my choices pretty set so i can get the ball rollin
@@musek5048 I would jump to X570 if you want to overclock and little bit futureproof yourself. PCIE Gen 4 might be useless for now but Precision Boost Overdrive is a nice feature that B450 motherboards don't offer. If you are on a budget, I would pick up Asus Prime X570-P board. By far the best of the "cheap" ones (VRM-wise).
@@myytti16 Actually B450 boards do support PBO. Its on the Tomahawk B450, ASRock Steel Legend B450M, ASRock B450 Pro4....
RGB isnt a must obviously but it IS a nice feature if it comes at a cheap cost. Sorry for rambling but people dont really respond that quick so i try to explain what i want to do as best i can.
Hi Mike, I'm committing to a Ryzen 5 3600, an EVGA Geforce RTX 2060, but the tomahawk is sold out. What mobo would you recommend I use? I don't know whether to go for the Gaming Plus Max or go for an X470 or X570? Appreciate it.

@@mikesunboxing it's sold out everywhere :( and the places that do have it are overcharging, do you recommend the MSI b450 Tomahawk ?
it is a good option but i would try and stay with x570 if you can with all those cores
@@johnstancliff7328 Good luck!
Hey, Mike... thanks for the video! Awesome! So the only difference between the Tomahawk Max and the Gaming Plus Max is the USB Type C? Are the VRM's different? CAD$144.00... not bad, but not great.
Yes the vrm is the exact same setup the whole board actually looks the same layout heatsinks etc
So a decent saving in some markets
Any different between heatsinks?

Asrock is pretty solid boards also.
totally agree - i think if asus were a little cheaper they would be unbeatable

no mine was open box not even a security sticker

- on LEFT side, near audio Jack connectors
- 2 on RIGHT side, near motherboard main connector
- on BOTTOM, near USB expansion headers.
