  • Hello! It’s Birgit here today with a fun resist technique using Vaseline petroleum jelly. With this technique you can create negative prints from your stencils, art printing plates, or stamps letting the background pop through the second layer.

Wow, so beautiful I just had to try these even though I'm new with the gelli plate. Took me a while to figure it out. The trick was to use a pretty opaque paint for that last layer, and of course make sure the colors were contrasting. After the first few kinda meh ones, the second batch was outstanding and I'm all ready to make more. Thanks!

Would love to try this beautiful technique. I think I'll try to find a petroleum jelly replacement though, because stray greasiness may spread to other projects and surfaces, even days later, no matter how much I clean. So frustrating when I find a greasy spot on otherwise perfect projects or cardstock. Extra steps have to be taken already to make sure that supplies like glass, acrylic and transparencies are free from oil and grease when starting a project. I can't imagine adding more grease to my studio work surface. Beeswax is very soft, so maybe that will work, in it's own way. Also, I could dedicate a space for this petroleum jelly technique, only use gloves and throw everything away immediately. Hope this helps someone who may have similar concerns. TFS! Your vid was well done and very easy to follow.

    Great results!!
I'm just wondering...are you able to varnish them afterwards??
I'd like to use uv resin (or acrylic varnish and uv resin on top of that) but Vaseline is pretty anti...well, pretty much anything, isn't it!?
Can you get it completely off (without ruining the piece)??
    Thanks in advance. :)

If so, would colored alcohol ink be best to mix in with the Vaseline?
Certainly I will try it. Just wondering if anyone else has already, and what you found.

Birgit - what would you think of trying to come up with a 'medium' that transfers images from inkjet print outs onto a gelli plate? It would be excellent if you and or Lou Anne + Joan could come up with a product that would work in combination with a gelli plate????
