  • In todays video I will be taking this 1970’s credenza/sideboard and giving it a complete makeover stripping it down to bare wood and staining it in a very beautiful red mahogany color paired with a very nice soft black satin paint job. I the the old hardware and replace it with very nice matte black handles and 2 knobs to complete this modern makeover design. I really hope you enjoy this video as much as I did creating it and flipping to another happy customer.

      wax and grease remover

  • @catofthecastle1681
    @catofthecastle1681 2 года назад +2

    You do very good work! One small tip! I wouldn’t use TSP if you’re going to sand, I think that’s what turned the finish goopy! Those degreasers don’t mix well with modern strippers. If you use a little Dawn and some 4 ought steel wool, you can get rid of the body oils and grease so your stripper can get right to stripping the old finish off without interfering with it’s job. I know everyone says it’s the best product but sometimes it might not be what you need. TSP was what we used in restaurants to clean out fryers and the wall behind them. It was listed as a neurotoxin and we were always warned to wear gloves and a respirator to avoid brain damage! Dawn is one of the strongest and safest degreasers on the market and isn’t so expensive if you only use it on the pieces you want to refinish instead of paint.

    • @CedarPineDesigns
      @CedarPineDesigns  2 года назад

      Thank you so much for the compliment and useful info. I really only got it after seeing a ton of people use it, but I honestly don’t really like how it works. I definitely will try dawn and probably stop using the TSP. I don’t like the tackiness it leaves behind, and makes for double the work when cleaning as I have to use water after. Thank you again for the tip. Take care and have a happy new year.

      also could mean youre not changing thepads frequently enough and the old pads are just dragging particles around

    • @kiwigirlNZ
      @kiwigirlNZ 2 года назад

      @@Christianmortimer sanding dust doesn’t build up like that, and the more sandpaper is used, the smoother it gets. Even if there was something like some type of adhesive being sanded over, particles can definitely build up, but it doesn’t create swirl marks. All it does is make the surface a pain in the arse to sand, because the sandpaper skips over the area being sanded.

      Thank you so much for the positive feedback. I usually take my used shop towels and let them sit on my concrete floor isolated away from anything that can catch fire until they are fully dry. I’ll them take them and wash them in my washing machine and either reuse them, or throw them away after wash

    How do you know if a piece of flipping furniture is previously stained and how do you know wether it's oil or water based stain. Real question. I want to flip a couple pieces for my own place.

    • @CedarPineDesigns
      @CedarPineDesigns  2 года назад +1

      You can typically tell just by looking at it if it’s been previously restored. Water base and oil base really doesn’t matter if you are stripping it down. But you can use water based stain but I feel the oil based soaks in better. The top coat I always use water based because it dries a lot faster.

    • @RoqueL1
      @RoqueL1 2 года назад +1

      Also. How can you tell wether a piece of flipping furniture is laminated or solid wood.

    • @CedarPineDesigns
      @CedarPineDesigns  2 года назад

      @@RoqueL1 if you look at the back of any piece is where you’re going to find the unfinished part of most furniture. You can see the difference between the wood and a thin layer of veneer on top. Also laminate is usually very plastic feeling and cheap. It takes time to recognition when you see many pieces you start to get the feel for it.

    • @CedarPineDesigns
      @CedarPineDesigns  2 года назад +1

      Behr paint should be fine so long as you get it with a built in top coat and then coat it with polyurethane to protect it. I’ve never had an issue but I will definitely be giving furniture paint a try in future projects
