I drove through the mountains in Wales once, and the fog got so bad i had no choice but to pull over and wait, I could see about 20ft all around me and nothing else - and this played on my stereo - one of the most amazingly moving moments of my life.
Some great stills from the early OMD I got to see them at Wolverhampton last week after waiting 45 years ,I have to say it was the best concert I’ve been too.
Still relentlessly addictive, to this day is there ever a better song? God bless these guys for their first three albums, sheer genius. Thank you for the post and great photos of a time that was so unpretentious, but oh so cool.
Nearly 40 years ago, my god they were only kids when they wrote this, how does that happen ? A timeless eerie masterpiece, atmospheric still today, bravo and respect OMD 💪👍😎
Sometimes when I listen to the OMD 'Greatest Hits' album, I wonder why I stuck with them for so long. Then I play the early albums and hear this sort of track, and it all becomes clear again. I bought this album for Electricity, but this track is just magnificent. Musicians at the height of their powers, writing for the pleasure of making music. Inspired!! And yes, as someone said earlier, this goes way past Kraftwerk.
The 1st 3 albums are electrifying. But Dazzleships made Humphries shit his pants over it's critical reception, and he wanted a purely commercial career...and here we are, I still contend Dazzleships is one the great unrecognised albums.
I'd of thought the more " Commercially Music Minded Member of the Band would be Andy McCluskey , the fact he was the only one left to plough that line bears me out ? Whereas Paul Humphries be keener on the " Weirder " earlier Material they issued ? Don't ya think ??😊😊@amhaglos
Seen these so many times, from the late seventies to the early 2000s. Always have been and always will be my favourite musicians. After Messages, this song runs a very close second.
Saw them on the Sugar Tax tour, nearly broke my heart. I nearly got thrown out because I kept shouting "where's the rest of the band?" I have a very loud voice, Andy was talking to the bouncers, he was not a happy bunny. I didn't know they had split. First album I didn't love.
My claim to fame. I was watching kraftwerk live in Liverpool (royal court 1981). At half time we were surrounded by hundreds of people. Andy mcluskey was sitting next to me. Legend! I hadn’t noticed yet had all his records.
Just love omd each time I listen and find a gem that ive not heard for a while takes me back iin time to the 80,s.each song has a part of your life u can relate to
This one was so special to me...... Missed the first girl that expressed her love to me. I was an OMD fan and so I was a nerd and didn t understand the signals she was giving to me. Thnx OMD LOL.

How they went from singing about a phone box, A MAJOR manufacturing petrol plant, then, too two Luftwaffe pilots, STILL blows My mind. OMD, I applaud you.
I *think* Messerschmitt Twins isn't two pilots. I *think* it's twin engined aeroplanes, like the BF110, much like a V-twin is a kind of bike named after its engine. But as the father of two sets of twin boys, it's a wonderfully evocative and enigmatic title for my favourite song on their first album. Loved this thing since it came out. Only listed as being played once in all their setlisted gigs. Not sure why.
eight mates in one bedroom listening to this album on vinyl in the eighties . oh yes forgot to add on magic mushrooms . i will never experience the joy of life as i did at that moment
I've been lapping up OMD since Electricity but... I reckon English Electric is their crowning glory. Don'y get me wrong: their early stuff is amazing but they are getting even better now. Keep it up chaps!
OMD. Every time I stick one of their LP's on, it gives me shivers of a bygone era, an opening of the mind and early memories of distant oil rigs burning on an oceanic horizon... well, those visible across the English Channel from Norfolk anyway. And then they did Sealand. The acoustics of these tunes live me in aural nirvana.

my second ever album bought was by omd and i continued to grow up with their excellent synth music and bought subsequent albums as they became available to buy in record stores from john macleod.
This was 'handmade' electronic music, literally. See the documentary how they made the early albums. Not the computer produced bilge produced today by computer programmers, not musicians.
This takes me back. Beautifull music. This band were wonderfull when they started (though I can remember defending them in the mid-eighties when they went off hunting for a number one!) Got to buy this album on CD.
OMD respected Kraftwerk so much, that when OMD were playing in Germany, Kraftwerk went to their concert ... Probably to see what the English competition was? OMD have the melodies and harmonies which is so different from Kraftwerk. OMD live performance are like "Electricity", energy and light!
this is going to upset a few: when OMD produces tracks like this they eclipse even kraftwerk. sorry, florian but that's just the way it is when the students outdo the masters.
agreed these guys were light years ahead of their synth pop peers who still sounded like little boys playing with their new toys (ala Depeche Mode Speak and Spell, sorry Vince)
Kraftwerk was an influence, but at the end of the day, OMD`s music is varied, melodies, slightly punky, others ballads, very different from Kraftwerk. They experimented with their music and together these talented guys made music to last ... still played today. Congrats on their longevity and having another burst of success.
I'm 14 years old again and back in Liverpool. OMD were a pivotal part of my youth. I used to see Andy Mccluskeys pink Rolls Royce (OMD7) pass my school. It made my day. Great days indeed.
I'm sure there's not another band that come close to OMD the reason I say this is when u can make a record about any subject like 88sec in Greenburg Stanlow oil plant.enolga gay and it works that a pure genus and so talented not like the shit we have today crap love songs that r churned out week in week out thank fuck for omd whom have gave me so much pleasure over the last 40 years keep it going lads and yes we love u ok it's a bit cheesy but wtf.
"According to keyboardist Paul Humphreys, the primary influences on the record were Brian Eno, Neu! and Kraftwerk." But if you were making electric music in the late 70s,you couldn't help but be influenced by Kraftwerk. OMD influenced A LOT of people though, by taking it further, and putting so much sheer heart into their music.
They unashamedly admit Kraftwerk as the biggest influence on their work.Infact when they actually finally met them they gushed like little schoolkids and told them what an influence they were for them but were real upset when Ralph or Florian didn't know who they were.At least they got to meet their heroes.
@@folkdisco Andy also worked with Karl Bartos after Bartos went Solo. Kissing the machine is one of the songs they did together. It was published on Bartos first solo album and later on English Electric
People always make the mistake to think that when a synthesizer sounds like it ought to sound, it has something to do with Kraftwerk. But a synthesizer programmed in this way has hardly anything to do with Kraftwerk, if Kraftwerk were telling this the wprld, it was a marketing trick of Kraftwerk. A well programmed synthesizer sounds like a synthesizer and Kraftwerk were not the only ones in the 70s who played/programmed synthesizers. If you have never programmed/played a synthsizer you can of course not know that. It's a machine, not a guitar or real keyboard instrument. Kraftwerk were secretly mocked for this marketing trick by quite some electronic musicians here in Germany because it is pure nonsense to argue like that, trust me. Kraftwerk did not invent the synthesizer nor the way it sounds when it has been properly programmed.
Richie... my musical twin! I raced to my girlfriends house and couldn't wait to hear my new album... I adored OMD... they were the first band I had ever heard live and I had joined their fan club. I sat stunned listening to Dazzle Ships... not believing what I was hearing. Wrong time to experiment and wrong album at the wrong time. This is beautiful though.
they was soooo good 3 great albums and then drivel i remember getting dazzal ships and being so disappointed with it i dropped them and never listened to them again until the other week and listened to omd organisation architecture and morality again and it was like hearing them again for the first time i am reborn long live the first 3 albums classics
Remember listening to this for the first time all those years ago and almost crying, beautiful song.
I drove through the mountains in Wales once, and the fog got so bad i had no choice but to pull over and wait, I could see about 20ft all around me and nothing else - and this played on my stereo - one of the most amazingly moving moments of my life.
G Allan I used to drive through the fog listening to mix tapes with this on.
I bet that was awesome. This whole album just touches something in me that nothing in their later tracks does.
Darren Parker agree it has something this album. Idiosyncratic.
I can imagine that, it must have been f awesome, envy u :)
Wales is the spiritual home of OMD. In my honest.
In 2023 this song is great, in 2050 still ❤
Beautiful song and photos 🖤 Philippe Carly was great photographer, like Corbijn.
Some great stills from the early OMD I got to see them at Wolverhampton last week after waiting 45 years ,I have to say it was the best concert I’ve been too.
Ultimate CLASSIC!!! ty OMD!!!!
love the way this song builds from two simple notes , amazing through to the fade out at the end. my favourite track of this album.
Still relentlessly addictive, to this day is there ever a better song?
God bless these guys for their first three albums, sheer genius.
Thank you for the post and great photos of a time that was so unpretentious, but oh so cool.

I have many OMD favourites, this is one of them. utterly haunting.
Helps me sleep sometimes when i awake from a really scary dream

When OMD got it right, my god did they get it right ! You could play this in another 30 years time and it will still blow you away.
I used to listen to this track and cry; so beautiful. Hell I still do.

Amazing to think they did the first two albums on a low-end Korg Micropreset. Two kids with very little money and a lot of heart.
