RB26 in a S13/14/15 is a honorable mention, probably too standard for these guys though. My favorite conversion ever done was not just engine but also drivetrain, one dude in his garage put a Honda K24 engine into a 5gen civic sedan, faded silver paint, stock wheels total sleeper, then stuck a big turbo on said K24, and then went through honda parts bin and put together a AWD system mostly off a mundane CRV. Then when he wanted RWD he just removed front axles rolled up to a drift track and drifted what visually looked like your aunt's grocery getter civic. It was sick. There was a video on youtube too.

personally i dont like sylvias aside s15, but my buddy use to have a rb25 in a s13. 26 is just to pricey. but if i got a s15, i'd do a rb25 instead of sr20. i dont care much for those either. maybe because they come in the silvia idk i cant say why. i guess i have a dumb bias for no good reason. busa motor in a old mini or other bike motor is cool or honda n200 i think its called is cool. but i found this channel the other day from watching czeromedia and his friend is doing a 4g63 out of a old talon in a newer mini. hes doing all the fab himself in his garage.

Basically everything here is in a V. But nothing cheap with 6 cylinders is as reliable/awesome as a Barra. Maybe the closest comparison is a vvt duratec v6. They're in many Mazdas and Fords. Otherwise you would go for a Mercedes or BMW L6.

    • @danbob1650
      @danbob1650 6 лет назад +1

Oblithian . gm had 4.2 l straight 6 280ish hp in us spec. I Would do that first over german l6 swap. Duratec was great engine had one in a svt contour. And there 3.5 turbo big bro wow. But why swap those. Nothing to cheap when it comes to cars engine swaps. And going against the grain is always digging way more deeper in the your pocket. But u make it your own that what it is all about.

Best: 3.5 Rover, Eaton M90, SVX auto into Mighty Boy (Mid engine track only). That was 3rd out of 130-odd cars at a hillclimb. A field that included a Group B RS200. It got beaten by the Skelta and a V8 Supercar, but not by much
Worst wasn't an engine swap, it was a carby and th400 onto an EB Falcon burnout car. Technically it had an EL engine so it was a swap, but that's like an FG to BA swap, doesn't count. Still, someone spent time and money reducing the performance measurably.
Bonus round: Strata-Garrett non-wastegated kit onto 202 in LJ coupe. 600 Holley suck through, 30psi on avgas, loose drivers seat. She was a wild ride, and I want it back

  • @TibzzTube
    @TibzzTube 6 лет назад +47

Here in Croatia, we don't have much in terms of engine conversions. We're a poor country and parts are really expensive so doing any conversion is a luxury.
What is really popular is Honda engine head swaps. People buy Civics with d14/d15 engines and put d16z6 heads on them. It's not much but with an exhaust, intake and a decent tune they can make 150hp. I know for you guys in Australia 150hp is a joke, but here that's a nice number.
The worst swap I saw would be an RX-8 with a VR6 engine. The amount of time it must've taken to do it just to end up with a car that's worse than stock. To be fair, the original engine was blown, so it had to be replaced but there are loads of BMW and Audi engines available here which would actually improve the car, at least power-wise.

Interesting swap, but that v10 has virtually no aftermarket support. It’s even hard to find cams for it; mostly resorting to having stock cams reground. That v10 is also heavier than “comparable” v8s (coyote, LS, etc).

DeanosAAAA It's good that is weights more, in a mid-engine car, it is beneficial to have weight bias towards the rear. A K20/24 would shift the center of mass forward, reducing potetial traction and cornering ability. Why do you think K swap MR2's have trouble with launching?

Waaay over the top as far as cutting, fabricating, cost, etc. BUT I've always had a soft spot for the del Sol and everyone has to admit a 2k lb car with 600+ hp at the rear wheels (the correct ones) complete with turbo noises would make for a very fun and exciting car regardless of whether or not they are a fan of Honda's

K or F-series honda for sure. Boosted they're easily the best sounding 4banger around, almost sounding like a high revving raspy wrx. K24's can make 300whp aspirated with a head package and stock rotating assembly, revving to 9k revs and will take 600whp boosted, k20's have seen over 700whp unopened. Tough aspirated sfwd 2.7L k24's make over 440whp and trap over 145mph in a stock chassis full interior car.
F-series wise a heap of 6-750whp builds on unopened engines and last like that for a couple years pulling 9500 revs. Real St ran a 9.4@156 in their s2000, pump e85, unopened engine. Worth nothing also kings performance made 1150whp on a stock port, stock cam, stock crank/factory girdle, sleeve/piston/rod & only build and ran into high 8's with IRS, then later made 1350whp on their off the shelf head packages, stock cams still & same short motor running 8.1s @ 171 with a live axle. Cant beat a good combo, only real downside to them is the open deck & needing to be sleeved above 6-700whp mark...

I personally fitted a 429 Cobra Jet motor into an XB GT 2 door hardtop with a big spine toploader, a bit of a worry into a corner though due to the heavier engine. The Ford 4V Mod Motor is seriously underrated. I think the whole 4 cams thing scares people off and they are wide so they are always a tight fit but they are becoming affordable and make easy power. Mod Motors hold 2nd spot for quickest factory motors just behind 2JZ and the really quick guys are making over 3000hp with sleeved factory ally block, ported factory head and mostly factory valve train. In NA form unported cam swaps and tune have seen around 400rwhp and the top builders have achieved over 600 at the rear wheels. A V8 that can go over 10k rpm or over 7k rpm with the stock crank is a pretty sweet thing.

USA - I drive a NA1 NSX with a bolt-on supercharger making ~375hp during my time in 10 years in America (My relative is an American immigrant) and my friend and I went for a drive during summer break and when we went to the Vegas Dragstrip, there's this amazing 1997 Series 1 Lotus Elise with a B18C bored to 2L and with a bolt on supercharger too making 280hp and with the lightweight, the little Elise flew down the 1/4 @ 11.42 sec. Amazing little pocket rocket.
Australia NSW - This was an oddball really. Saw this in 2007 and it was a Holden Premier HX and it had a bunch of dumb things in it. It's a 1JZ conversion but a BNR34 turbo sets (I don't know how that works) and claimed to be cranked up to 332Kw (452hp) and the exhaust system was dumb as heck often sounding like a rifle going off.
Australia Warwick - Saw this in 2007 also but it's a AE86 with a F20C in it and it..Sounds.... WONDERFUL! It was at a track day at Morgan Park Raceway and watching the thing doing it's lap while sounding like a screaming banshee is nice.
Malaysia - This is across my border and this was just recently where a street built 260Z Fairlady had a RB26 tossed in. It was a imported Tomei N1 spec block and with it makes about 500hp fully done and it could fly down the highway at 262kmh for 10 mins reliably cutting in and out of traffic with no issue. Even a R35 GTR has issue catching it. Too bad the car was stolen and never got found. (I know the owner by the way. He passed away at age 53 from a heart attack last year)
Worst engine swaps that I ABSOLUTELY hate the most is LS swapped RX-7s be it FC3S or FD3S. I mean, sure. They work better than the rotary 13B but the reason with the 13B is that they could make more with way less and nothing sounds better than a 13B blowback and the mighty sounds of "BRAPBRAP". Plus, LS swap RX-7s are just so fuckin' generic. Come on man... Stop that

while i can understand putting a piston engine in an RX... but why a bloody LS? Mazda have some great engines themselves, B6, K8 or even the mighty 2.3 MZR could been fitted in an RX.
LS in an RX should be as tabu as putting an LS in an Mustang or Hemi Cuda. or in European terms, putting an Nissan L28 in an Alfa Romeo Montreal or an 1.9D from an Peugeot 405 in an Alfa Romeo GTV6 (116) and chopping the back off making a jute of it.
people have done it, but the thought off doing it should not have been done in the first place...

Ford 6.8l 3v V10 Motor in a 2003 Mustang is probably my favorite engine swap of the year and my favorite car to drive as well. Put a pair of nice Junk Yard Diesel Turbos on it, Rebuild with Forged Internals, Custom Long Tubes Headers, Custom Straight Piped No cat exhaust, and Custom Intake equals over a 1000Tq to the rear wheels. Had it at 174MPH in the Half Mile before I backed out of it and blows thru tires so fast that you need a new pair every other week. Not to mention I average right around 6 Smiles per gallon of E85 and 11 Smiles per gallon on 93 :)
Second Favorite is a Ford 2.3l Ecoboost from a 2016 Mustang in a 2004 Mazda RX8. A guy at the local Cars&Coffee did the swap and this car with this motor makes for a very fun time. More Power, better Reliability, Better MPGs, and more torque than the factory rotary engine makes the RX8 a totally different car. One of the best swaps ever for an RX8 besides the LFX and Chevy LS swaps.
Next is a Honda K24 in an 02 Toyota MR2 Spider making 300WHP All Motor. This is one of the scariest cars to actually drive when you start adding power to it. Stock and Swaped weighs a little under 2200lbs so any power increase is going to feel like a big improvement. The guy that had it made a C6 Corvette look as slow as a prius and even beat an FBO 2016 Mustang GT in the same manner.
Worst swap I've seen is an RX7 with an all motor LS7. Normally I'd be all for swapping a Rotary out however in this case it was too far. I'm not a Rotary guy by any means and only recently started warming up to the idea of one however when you think RX7 and Engine swap the only thing that should ever be done is a built up rotary engine with a High as hell 10k+ Rev limit and a Nice big Turbo. Nothing else should be done to an RX7 and anyone who has stuck anything else in one needs to be shot and the RX7 rescued from that hell.

My least favorite engine conversion is an LS in an RX7. For me I think you shouldn’t buy an RX7 if you don’t want to deal with problems that come from a rotary and plus for the price of an LS and all the stuff to make it fit than you should just buy a rebuild kit for the rotary to make it reliable

KevMan 375 What about if someone is to buy a rolling shell and instead of hunting for say a low mileage 13B they could probably just go and get a decent junkyard ls motor which would be much easier to maintain and will probably give way more torque. Don't get me wrong I do like Rotary engines but they are just alot harder to maintain and i'm sure most people who swap out there rotary engines end up selling them which means that someone who is specifically looking for a rotary engine can get one so in reality the people who are ls swapping a decent rotary engine could be helping those who want to maintain there rotary engines.

Best engine swap for me: its a toss up. The good old Toyota UZ series V8. I know there isn't a whole lot of love for the iron block 2UZ and alloy block 3UZ, but they're both very good motors regardless, but the non-VVT 1UZ is the king. You can wind sensible amounts of boost into it and make really good power and still keep it reliable on stock internals. The other one is the "junkyard 5-3", AKA LM7 iron block 5.3L LS. Just add boost and more boost.
I've been having a bit of a diesel fetish recently so anything with an oil burner stuffed in the front is good for me. 6BT, TD42, 1HD-TE, Ford Powerstroke V8, all of those beasts. Saw an Altezza wagon with a 1KZ-TE out of a Hilux Surf/4Runner recently after the 1G-GE spun a bearing. Or that RX8 with the 6BT Cummins....pretty damn left field thinking

In a Torana? sacrilege though a few put them in Sports Sedans. And probably went slower! I went Chev, cheaper faster and far more reliable.
As for conversions I know or have done? Corrolla into an early Diahatsu 4wd. 308 in LJ, 308 in Bedford Truck, 318 LA into a D5N Dodge that started as 245. 350 into HX LS, 318LA into a Rambler Hornet. Ones I have known,, Holden into Morris Minor, MGB into Morris Minor, Holden into Anglia, Holden into Simca, Holden into Kombi Van. 454 into Transit Van, 427 into Austin A90, Cleveland into a Sigma [and Windsor as well] 289 into MGB. SBC into EH by about 6! All of these on the road.
Then a bit more wild Holden into Honda S600, 2 litre Ford into Honda S600. Chev into Honda S600! Morris 1100All by the same bloke. Holden and Chev using Jag rears. 454 into LH. Rotaries into Escort, Corrolla Anglia 510 Datto and LC Torana. Chevs in Escorts, Alfas, and more.

Made me cry to watch it when so many guys were doing it right. All the SOHC EJs fit with very little trimming. DOHC motors fit fine with the Subaru trans as it moves the whole drivetrain forward a few inches. I've owned both aircooled and subaru powered VWs. The Subaru was a lot more reliable.

About 25 years ago I got sick of the unreliable 1600 in my '72 Kombi and swapped in a Subaru EA81 pushrod engine on to the VW trans. No cutting of the Kombi at all, you could have unbolted the Sub and put the VW back in. I made a frame that supported the radiator behind the engine (OK, I cut the engine door to let the air out, covered it with a Merc grille!) and the frame hinged to the side for engine access using flexible hoses. The Subaru was totally stock, gave a useful power increase, way more reliable and used less fuel. I owned it for 13 years, even threw a 21st birthday party for it. Happy days.

Currently installing a 5.3 LM7 4l60e in a HZ One Ton, in Kalamazoo Michigan. Engine and trans fit nicely, no sump mods, factory exhaust manifolds. Only change is from the truck intake to the LS intake to fit it all under the stock hood.

I've always enjoyed high high revving motor bike engines in a mini...decent power decent fitment crazy sound... Is this new format something we can look forward to in the future? Like the idea of guest opinions such a mechanical stig on different autosport topics... Also love the longer build breakdowns and some behind the scenes dyno tuning videos would be cool. Thanks for the videos and the awesome products haltech, my elite has been in my daily driver with zero problem for over a year.

Touge Warrior just cuz you had a bad builder who clearly don't know what there doing because I have a Tll FC with a 13B rew 350hp and it is reliable iv driven it from Massachusetts to Florida and back with no issues that's 1,500 miles each way so a total of 3k mile road trip non stop other than fuel premix stops ,no cooling issues ,proper maintenance goes a long way lol

Many years ago I had a Sigma 2.0, the engine was very warn out so I opted for a 2.6 but at a pick a part wreckers found a 3.8 commodore with 4 speed auto with low ks and all intact so $200 later it was mine. It was fitted into the Sigma and wow! it was great. The brakes also came from the same donor and the chassis strengthen for an engineers cert.
In1993 the car was stolen and wrecked in a car smash, it was apparently doing 160km/hr when this happened.

If you say a Rotary is unreliable your just dumm! If you treat it right give it its oil and service and it will be the most reliable engine you will ever have!

I used to work with a chap who used to install them in light aircraft. They are really reliable if treated well and alot better than most aircraft engines. Plus as they are so balanced it's better for aircraft stability.

For me... I'd have to say these are badass:
    VR38 / built & boosted K24 in an MR2
    VR38 or pretty much any half-decent V6 in a Mazda MX5
turbo LS/LT4 in a BMW 325i (And also Barra, VR, RB, 2J 6-bangers... those are great swaps for anything pretty much)
    And nopes would be:
    LT4/LS in an RX7/RX8
    H22 in a Skyline
Anything with less than 5 cylinders in a Holden / Vauxhall / Opel Insignia VXR

waterloo123100 appart from the fact a k20a2 can hold just 350whp and an ls4 can gold over 700 on e85 lol

    • @waterloo123100
      @waterloo123100 6 лет назад

Alex Thompson a stock a ls4 isn't holding 700hp lol. Especially on the 4t80e there's reason why you don't see Gxp's drag racing let a alone setting records like a fwd Honda. Honda is the best and a k20 can hold 500 hp on stock internals.

If there is one thing I like with engine swaps it would be how engines that are usually meant to be fitted in a certain angle would now sit ninety degrees in a different car etc a fwd honda inline-4 drivetrain into something where the back wheels are powered instead of the front wheels as originally intended with that drivetrain but with a few mods to work.

Hayabusa 1300 into a gutted late 90’s Swift GTi. Quad rotor in that savanna (or in anything). Best that I’ve seen though is that 2-stroke v8 in an old Volvo! Favourite swap engine: Audi 5cyl turbo - one of those would keep me smiling in my grave.
