    Oh my goodness Vince you should not put the shiny reflective bit on there with a backlight! Consider: on a stock DMG or MGB, the screen is illuminated via the reflector - light from the ambient environment goes through the screen and gets reflected back out, essentially “backlighting” (in the loosest term) your screen. If you get a backlight instead, you don’t need to reflect light - you’ve already got light coming out on demand! The reflector just mucks up your picture and keeps the backlight from doing its job properly.

    It's interesting the contrast in approaches between My Mate Vince and The Retro Future. Vince is rather measured using his multimeter frequently, whilst Elliot has a more instinctive manner. I think both could learn from each other as both have their pros and cons. Keep up the good work, both of you!

    • @Fifury161
      @Fifury161 4 года назад

      "Elliot has a more instinctive manner" - by that do you mean he just guesses? My Mate Vince puts in a bit of effort and reasoning to source the fault, he might not always be right and may not fix it - that's what's makes it entertaining. Elliot usually gives up stating that's it's "not worth repairing", rather than exploring the actual fault, which for me makes for a boring anti-climax...

    • @ToxoRetro
      @ToxoRetro 4 года назад

      @@Fifury161 "Guesses" is too harshly put as that suggests he has no idea what's he's doing (which clearly is not the case because he regularly gets results); he takes an intelligent estimate of the most likely causes, predominantly from past experience. To elaborate, let's compare Elliot to a race driver. F1 drivers don't "guess" where the corners are; they practice them thousands of times. In a grand prix situation, should the weather change or the need to pass traffic or they have a car defect, the have to judge a compromised racing line to tackle the here and now. Sure, it doesn't pay off every time but they judge a probability of risk and choose when to back off when the situation resists. If they actually just carelessly guessed, there would be regular deaths and serious injuries due to the pure erratic randomness. That's the difference between being instinctive (scenario based prediction, like poker) and guessing (pure luck, like a lottery). Precision is a slower process, but even with absolute fine details doesn't guarantee success, as it still gives a window for uncontrollable factors.
      Elliot is resourceful and practical - he'd rather have completed products to show, with his regular condensed "highlights" videos to keep audience attention and stockpile parts for future videos as his content tends to revolve around Gameboys. Vince on the other hand isn't such a specialist as he works on a wide scale of projects so specific spares are just clutter, so he's more determined to fight for a completed job even if it doesn't pay off, plus he chooses to be more "full footage" to be open on how long things take (which the latter occasionally happens with Elliot's live streams on his second channel, so he doesn't "lie" about timescale either).
      Which is better? Whether you watch for interest or entertainment is your choice; everybody is different and get different things out of life. I like both approaches and ultimately the opposing styles gives us options and/or variety.

    • @Fifury161
      @Fifury161 4 года назад

      @@ToxoRetro I understand your analogy - however it assumes you are familiar with the car and the track, I get the impression that Elliot would struggle trouble shooting something he hasn't worked on before and that where the guess work comes in, granted it might be an "educated" guess, but it's still a guess. Even a novice can swap out parts to get something working again...

    • @ToxoRetro
      @ToxoRetro 4 года назад

      @@Fifury161 Elliot has lots of Gameboy experience from various models from pre RUclips and unless anyone has majorly fiddled with it or there is a subtle fault such as the one in this video (which is probably why he collaborated with a trusted RUclipsr), it's unlikely he'll need to do anything radically off-piste. Then his philosophy is to encourage his viewers to give it a go, so that's kind of the entire point.
      Let's agree to disagree. If you don't agree, don't watch the videos - that's your opinion and your free choice.

    Nice MGB's you had there. Kudos on sorting it yourself. Cars like that were so easy to work on. Spares were plentiful too. Welding is something I struggled with for years so fair play on teaching yourself. I only ever did one nut and bolt restoration... Triumph Dolomite 1850HL in wine and full webasto with vinyl roof and Sprint wheels. Every part was taken to pieces, lovingly restored where possible with new body panels up front, new floor pans and rebuilt the chassis rails, polybushes from the US as not available over here, hand rebuilt the engine and overdrive with these hands, new twin carbs, all new lights and had the seats recovered and American paint which gave it a super deep lustre. Woodwork sanded and yacht varnish'd to a glass like shine, there wasn't a blemish on the car. My kid brother wrote it off and never had the heart to do a resto again :(

    "The only people who want to play this are people who want to revisit there youth or collectors".
    I find that adding functionality to old consoles like RGB outputs to the NES doesn't degrade from the console only makes it more playable for those in 2020 who are used to crisper pixels. The same goes for a backlight, it might be more 'unauthentic' but that doesn't matter if you can more easily play in the dark you. It makes it more pleasant, for me at least, to enjoy games on a console well older than myself. But it's all personal preference in the end so it's ok to mod your system to the way you like it. That's the whole point of modding in the first place.

    • @Vermilicious
      @Vermilicious 4 года назад +5

      It's a preservation thing. Anyone dealing in antiques will tell you modifications make the value plummet, and undoing the damage is often difficult or impossible. The NES might be a bit rough around the edges, but a composite signal isn't as bad a thing as the visibility is for these old game boys, if you ask me. Believe me, I would love to get a better picture from my NES, but it's not worth it.

    • @Fifury161
      @Fifury161 4 года назад +1

      I guess it's a personal choice, value isn't that be a factor as these devices aren't exactly "rare". One thing about modding older consoles is that a lot of them relied on the CRTs lack of picture quality (relative to todays 4K & 8K displays). The analogue blur was a lot more forgiving - also the timings allowed for simpler light guns hardware to work.. The Dreamcast is the only console of that generation that actually played an enhanced game when connected to a screen with a better resolution than a TV!

    • @clothinghanger6978
      @clothinghanger6978 4 года назад +2

      I'm OK with soft-modding, because it is more easily reverted back to how it originally was, but once a console has been hard-modded, it's never going to be the same. I get really sad to see those portable versions of consoles that are actually made out of a real one, like all those portable Wiis and GameCubes. And I absolutely hate seeing someone mod anything rare. I despise people that mod things like the Panasonic Q or retail kiosks.

    • @partypiggaming9344
      @partypiggaming9344 4 года назад

      @@clothinghanger6978 I know exactly what you mean with Panasonic Q's and store kiosks but everybody and there grandma has a Wii. You can get a complete system at car boots for less then £20 so any "historical preservation" for that kind of system at the tiny community of about 100 people who research and develop those mods, I think it's ok because you don't need too look very far to find a unmodded system.
      As for the Q it is surprisingly common compared to most "rare" systems but it was poorly made with unique parts so restoration requires salvaging or leave to functionless which is of course less impactful for "historical preservation"

    Ooo a Valjoux 92 if I am not mistaken... You will have to learn some things about them mechanical chrono's to get the best out of them and you can inadvertently damage them by being heavy on the wind as they are incredibly complex mechanical movements inside there and you will need to have serviced regularly by someone who understands them as not all modern watchsmiths have had the opportunity of working with a Valjoux or Poljot mechanical chronograph and oiling is very critical on these, when Anchor oil will not do and prob bugger up the doings.
    My grail of grails is a Sekonda branded, black dial and mint lume two register Poljot Sturmanskie mechanical chronograph which under the cover is a Valjoux 7177 from when Poljot bought the lot from Valjoux when Valjoux discontinued the series which the 92 was the granddaddy of. Mark Lovick's Watch Repair Channel recently covered a Poljot 3133 you will find interesting and an idea of just how complicated these beauties are and I rate a mechanical chronograph as the best you can buy.

    I'll give this idea for anyone who has different sized led for screens, phones, GBA, laptop or monritor or even TV screen leds. buy some printable clear sheets to print photos on, You can also buy photo frames to make DIY frames. Measure the frame to the led screen, print your photos on the sheets, you can buy some step down modules to generate the voltage for the led screens and bobs your uncle, illuminated photos that are a bit like the effect from stained glass. Kind of like a light also.

      Also, I don't believe the reflector is necessary with the back light since it's purpose is to reflect external light back through the screen to illuminate the image on the screen. Removing it might yield better results albeit a bit washed out but you could add a bivert mod which would invert the pixels and improve contrast.

    Even if you install a backlight, all the original hardware is there unchanged, only adding an extra layer to the screen. I'm sure there are people who prefer the original, unchanged experience, but I believe most of us don't want to go back to the days where we needed very specific lighting conditions in order to play games. That's not what we loved about the Game Boy, so it's not something most people would miss. Improving on that one aspect doesn't take away anything from anything else. All the things we love about it are still present and one of the biggest annoyances is gone. Plus, when the backlight is turned off the screen looks the same as before. It's just a step to getting the best experience possible on original hardware, which judging by how popular RGB and HDMI mods and Sony PVM/BVM/Trinitron TVs are, is something people want. Just because someone wants to play on original hardware doesn't mean they don't want the best experience possible.

      I've personally been spoiled by backlit screens, and I don't think I could go back now. I believe a lot of people think the same as me. Having a backlit screen mod goes a long way to making an old handheld more usable again. I would keep the backlit screen, and also install a bivert mod and flip the polarizing filter, as the contrast is a bit bad with the backlight mod and that helps make it better.

    You take 2 leds and slide them into the sides of the high voltage tube and add a resistor and your done.

    vince mate remove the foil between the light and the polarizer
    the foil is for reflective lighting like in the sun or for preventing light reflections inside the case
    it will be much brighter and more useable without the majority of the light being wasted
    plus you could add a variable resistor for the brightness to save on battery in dark conditions

  • @michaelthomas3646
    @michaelthomas3646 4 года назад +4

    I think if you could backlight it, but put an on/off switch somewhere like the battery compartment (so hidden but keeping exterior original) then it would allow best of both worlds, because you wouldn't want the backlight draining the batteries during the day. try Elliot see if there is a way to cut out the bubbles or does it ruin the polarizer? so that you could in future cut the polarizer to get rid of bubble like they do with tinted window fitting. I know you couldn't do anything about the dust trapped between the polarizer and the screen, but reduce the amount of bubble between the screen and the polarizer.

    man! i gotta say when you started peeling the layers from the LCD i thought that thing was trashed. i see now how they had the LCD set up. very cool! i wonder, did someone leave that gameboy inside a car with the sun shining on it? what caused the screen to look burned??

    • @arthurcollector4002
      @arthurcollector4002 4 года назад

      its called vineger syndrome, it happens from a chemical reaction in the lcd polarizer film after 20 to 30 years, if will happen or when will happens depends on quality of polarizer film and environment. The name is because screen smell like vineger after reaction starts

  • @SparksNZeros

    tbh with gameboys i've always found it to be almost pointless to do diagnostics, if after washing, corrosion removal and alcohol rinsing everything, it still has issues. those issues are likely not going to be an easy fix (i.e you'd need to salvage parts from another gameboy).

    I agree with not including a backlight. For people who want the better playing experience from these they would get a backlit gameboy colour. And if they want a more original gameboy with a backlight, there is already something for that - a Gameboy Light!
    So for me at least a backlit gameboy pocket doesn't make a huge amount of sense.
