      Yes, and the sad thing about it, the quality isn't that good. Short boundaries, wrong shots. I feel for young batters (if I can't call them batsmen anymore with the growth of the ladies' game) who have to play these fancy shots so early in their careers instead of experience in the middle playing balls on merit. These hundred teams allow three overseas players. Two of them bowl and often two bat in the first four. Where are the England players of the future ?

    Would Stokes have gotten injured like that if England were playing Tests rather than making way for the Hundred?

      As an Indian, I certainly feel that franchise cricket has compromised with the quality of cricket....especially test cricket. Just 12-13 years ago, every team had atleast 1-2 genuine fast bowlers and they usually played almost the entire season. If they were injured, there were 1 or 2 waiting in the domestic circles to replace them.
      Secondly, leagues like IPL have certainly brought the money in cricket but as Athers said, there's no regulation. I mean for God's sake, allot a time slot for these leagues out of entire year, let's say january to march. And pressurise BCCI to let Indian players also play in other leagues. Also, change t20 world cup from every 2 years to every 4 years and don't allow any league in that year. Otherwise it feels like a repeat of same t20 format 4-5 months an year. It becomes quite boring.

    Solution= Get rid of the Baldt, give every County a Hundred team (may dilute quality but the Blast has to go).
    The ECB should give more central contracts (30 or so) so they can control when players play if they are at all in contention for England. White ball players should be given a lot of franchise cricket and red ball players should play 7 or 8 county games, with half or so of the Hundred. All format players should be heavily controlled and miss out on internationals every now and then.

Given the love of Test Cricket in India England and Australia (maybe South Africa to) I don't see Test cricket dying out. I do see domestic one day games coming under threat. The 50 over game worldwide could easily just disappear. The new "audience" today is being brought up on short format cricket not sure they will continue to be interested in longer formats of the game even 50 overs.

    I think Athers is right. The game needs balance in fixture terms and appropriate regulation to ensure that happens. However.. The ECB are not the only controlling factor. India in particular are the key influencer, so much so that there are no Indian/IPL players in this years Hundred. They have established the IPL as their crown jewel and it is massively successful. My question is why do we need the T20 Blast AND the Hundred? Surely we could create one tournament which satisfies that piece of the cake, bringing along the Womens game, satisfying customer demand and as a result creating space in the fixture schedule. The reason is obviously money and The Hundred is seen to be magic money tree. The cricket authorities need to get a grip, but as Athers says, has it all gone too far now to pull back.

    • @Gramscifreedom
      @Gramscifreedom 27 дней назад

      The problem with the blast (and I’ve been beating this drum for years now) is that the quality is too diluted.
      With 18 teams to choose from in the uk you don’t have star studded line ups and as a result the interest from younger audiences isn’t there.
      I’ve watched both Blast and Hundred games this year and there is a distinct difference in the crowds attending those matches.
      Having said that, the men’s hundred is simply losing that allure because so many top players aren’t taking part for whatever reason. The women’s game is far more engaging for the reasons Nas pointed out.
      I’m not sure what the answer is - most people love to praise the free market when it offers choice and creates opportunities, but when it threatens to displace something we all care about (red ball cricket) the same people can’t then all be up in arms about deregulation.
      Unless strict regulations come into the game (which won’t happen due to the constant drive for investment) then we’ll continue to see further dilution and a move away from the longer market.

      Sam Curran may not be a strong a batter as Ben Stokes but he is the only genuine All-rounder England have that can hold the balance of eight batsman and five specialist bowlers. IMHO - Marquee players especially once in a generation players like Bumrah, Stokes, Archer, Pandya, Shami etc. should only play in important international tournaments like ICC events, Ashes, Border-Gavaskar trophy etc. They are such skilled players with exceptional ability to win international tournaments hence they should preserve themselves and not play in inconsequential domestic leagues and get exposed to injuries.

      Only bumrah due to its exceptional bowling skills can be called as once in a generation bcz his skills are not condition based.

    It’s not just about ‘too much cricket’, it’s about pointless cricket. Let’s be honest the hundred just isn’t a very high standard of cricket. I know they’re stuck with it for years to come but long term it’s unsustainable. It’s not like the IPL it’s more like the Canadian t20 league. So silly to cancel your summer for this.

    I've never like the "Hundred", seems a waste of time, they have messed with the format, and as always not free to view, so limited to those who can afford Sky. Just can't see the point of it. Not totally convinced Ollie Pope is good enough to get in the England team, averaging in the 30's for your number 3 batter is not ideal, so equally not convinced he should be Capt the side. Not at all sure about Dan Lawrence. 27 years old now, I think he's done okay domestically, first class ave in the high 30's, so not running away with it, and I think around ave of 29 in 11 Test's..., In his last 10 innings, he's only averaged 14.6 !!!, so surprised he's got the nod.. .. Doesn't show any signs of being a Test player, but only my take on it.. Good job Joe Root is there, or we would be struggling..
