- Rankings are always fun, right? Which game, movie, show, team or what have you, is the best? Which one is the worst? These sorts of videos or articles always lead to great conversations, and with a topic like this, I wouldn't have it any other way. Everybody seems to love the original, 1978 film. 1988's 'Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers' is a little more divisive, with some lauding it as a great, whereas others bury it with other two films it's connected to in the Thorn Trilogy. Entries like 'Halloween Resurrection' or Rob Zombie 'Halloween 2' are often pointed to as laughing stocks, and hey, maybe that's fair, maybe it's not. I'm here today to lay out my official rankings of the Halloween films. Enjoy it!

Although I still got A LOT of catching up to do with this franchise, I feel like after your incredible “History Of”, and thanks to my brother for showing me some of these films, such as Rob Zombie’s first one, 2018, and Kills, I have to say this franchise is definitely something special. I can’t wait for Halloween Ends very soon, and my brother told me that for Halloween this year, on the 31st, we’re watching the OG ‘78 film together as a special event, and I’m HYPED as hell for that. This October is gonna be a blast! Thank you, Ian and my brother for making me hype for October every year now.😁

As @Sam W said watch the original Halloween 1978 and Halloween 2 back to back. They go amazing together and to be honest I love 2. But nothing beats the classic .
Next year you should ask your brother to let you experience the rest of the horror franchises. My favorite is and always will be Michael myers (Halloween) but if you haven’t seen A Nightmare on Elm Street this should be your next avenue as Freddy is my second favorite

Halloween 2 (Rob zombie) is a few spots below 12 only because I'm a Gore Whore and I can't stand Halloween 5 and Halloween Curse, and Resurrection 🤣🤣
III is indeed underrated, no doubt.
III was my first Halloween franchise film. Saw it when I was 5, so it's one of my first post-saturday-morning-cartoons movie memories. I had a single parent that worked full time, and I took full advantage of it! LOL. My 2 fav film genres are camp (Pink Flamingos, Freeway, etc) and comedy/horror (Freddy's Dead, Bride of Chucky, etc), and somehow, part 3 was unintentionally both of those genres! Camp never happens on purpose, as John Waters said... "It has to be approached completely seriously, while the vision for it goes completely seriously off the rails. We wanted to scare hippies, we weren't trying to be camp!" hahahaha i fuckin love that dude xD
Halloween 5 sucks the big one but it does have one good scene. The scene where Jamie is hiding in the metal garbage shoot thing is solid. Myers trying to stab her through the metal was well done.
I watched the Halloween interviews with the cast about every movie and H5 was the wildest! They said that they didn’t really know if they were going to stab Jaime in that scene and that the driver couldn’t see her in the car chase scene. She’s lucky she’s alive!

I just finished watching the series & definitely agree with Part 5 & the Zombieverse being at the bottom. They are very hard to get through… I’m in the camp where I like Halloween II from 1981 just as much as the original Halloween. The atmosphere is perfect & the final chase scene always makes me so anxious as I’m watching it lol. Everyone enjoy the new film next Friday & be safe this Halloween!!! 🔪🎃

Mines a controversial list but I don’t care:
1. Halloween 3: Season of the witch- This is one of the most original horror movies I’ve ever seen and people are scared off from it because Michael isn’t in it. Colonel Cochran is more demented than Myers.
2. Halloween (1978)- A masterpiece and timeless classic.
3. Halloween Kills- The kills are gory, I love the flashback scenes and how we got to see the whole town go after Michael.
4. Halloween (2018)- A much needed return to form for the franchise.
5. Halloween II (1981)- keeps the feeling for ‘78 and probably the easiest one to watch back to back with the original.
6. Halloween 5- Grab the torches if you must, is alot of it silly sure, does Michael look his best? Absolutely not but Loomis’s “Hell would not have him” quote and when he goes ballistic on mike with that wooden plank while yelling die gives me chills. The psychiatrist was finally driven insane and I always found that ironic. Also this has some of the best kills next to Halloween Kills in the franchise.
7. Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers- full disclosure this used to be my absolute worst Halloween but it’s actually grown on me somehow. Is it perfect? No. But the cult aspect is interesting even if I don’t exactly think it’s canon lol.
8. Halloween 4- Probably the first Halloween I saw. It’s actually gone down for me from when I was a teenager. Good movie but I think it was a product of the 80’s and I can think of plenty of 80’s slashers who did it better than Halloween 4.
9. Halloween H20: this also used to be alot higher. Same problem with Halloween 4 but with the 90’s, just a product of it’s time. I also don’t exactly understand what the issue was with the different masks I mean is it really that hard to just choose one? They should have ended it by killing Myers.
10. Halloween Resurrection- Probably the stupidest one of them all but I can actually find it at least entertaining. For some reason I relate this to Jason X for the same reason that I know it’s dumb but at least it’s a good time.
11. Rob Zombies Halloween- They shouldn’t explain Michael and the whole second half is a carbon copy of the original. Lack of originality is a big killer for me and I always skip Zombies films whenever I watch the franchise.
12. Rob Zombies Halloween II- What the fuck was he trying to say in this exactly. I guess respect that he tried to give these films a higher concept, I just don’t think Halloween is the franchise to do that.

It was awful. The end.
Dr Wolfula released a mega review of Halloween Kills last week that recontextualized the film into a full continuation of Halloween 2018 (as Green & McBride said they wanted to film the two back to back) and it makes it a lot more interesting. It’s a Campbell Hero’s Journey narrative, except twisted for Michael. Whether or not that fixes issues people have with ‘18 or Kills, it’s quite an interesting take and one I’m going to have in the back of my mind when I watch the two next week in preparation for Halloween Ends.
Heck, I almost want a re-edit of ‘18 & Kills into one complete film that puts everything in chronological order (meaning it picks up right where Halloween 1978 left off with the flashback) edits out some of the problems, and makes it all flow better. Francis Ford Coppola did the same with The Godfather Parts 1 & 2 with The Godfather Saga and the Criterion Collection had the chronological cut of Memento as an extra, so it would be interesting to try.
I'll do a retrospective on 2018, Kills and Ends once they're all out and have had time to rest. Looking forward to it.

Heck yeah. Solid ranking. I'm working through my own rewatch of the series this past week. Tonight is the Zombieverse. After rewatching the original 8, my ranking would be about the same, but moving up Halloween 3 in between 2018 and Kills.
Also after rewatching, it's such a shame how much Moustapha (RIP, but respectfully) butchered this franchise. He was given 3 (4 if you just count the original) solid and justifiable endings to this great franchise, and it still wasn't enough. 1978, 1981, Halloween 4, and H20 were all great caps in their own way, but he just couldn't let go of the one golden Goose he had. Damn shame. BUT, at least there are some great drinking game installments to enjoy.

After this it would be neat if they considered trying to go back and do Halloween as an anthology series. We’ve seen it work pretty well on tv for the last decade.
I think they'd have to change the title. Or call it 'The Halloween Chronicles' or some such deal. People relate the name to Michael Myers, especially now.

Once she fell asleep, which is understandable if you've seen that film, I watched your film. 4 hours is pretty exhausting to sit through, I can only imagine how long it took you to put together. Hahahaha, well to be fair, that’s a re-release. The five ‘parts’ released from June all the way to October 2021, and this year I smashed them all together into the ‘full movie’ version. So it wasn’t one giant project, more like five big ones, hahaha.
But yea, it’s a tremendous amount of work. I’m a one man team, so it’s all me. It can be a bit much, lol. But this is what I chose to do, it’s what I love to do, so no complaints from me.

Great list. Mine is certainly close. Between Resurrection and Curse I'm not sure which I enjoy more. I don't hate Resurrection like I do others for the exact reasons you stated. In the case of Curse, while I hate the overall story, the movie at least wins me over with superb Halloween and fall aesthetics and atmosphere. With some entertaining moments and a good mask to boot.
My biggest debate with myself is what is higher between Halloween 4 and 2018/Kills. I thoroughly enjoy all three. But the top two? Forget about it. It'll always be the original and Halloween II. As you said, the perfect double feature.

And a great point about Resurrection -- I agree that it's more watchable than some because it falls into the "so bad it's good" camp. Excellent stuff as always, Ian. I would agree with the majority of this ranking myself, although first and foremost I'd swap Resurrection and 5, coincidentally for the same reason you ranked Resurrection the way you did. I'm sure for someone like yourself who has deep investment in the franchise it comes off more insulting than entertaining, but the way Loomis is reduced to running around every scene shouting for Michael not unlike the infamous opening sequence of Heavy Rain (Press X to Michael), and Myers 'subtly' appearing in the background of so many scenes borders so close to parody that me and my friends were howling in laughter for most of the runtime.

Ranked based purely on my own personal nostalgic connection and enjoyment. Yes I put H20 over the original. Admittedly not as well made, yet the goosebumps it gave me the first time I saw the scene where Laurie screams out Michael, while holding the axe and the music kicks in...Fucking mint!
Halloween 2 was the first of the franchise I ever saw when it used to be played every October 31st, alongside Halloween 3 on one of our cable channel at the time. Way back in 98...
A lot of people shit on Halloween Kills, but from a purely entertainment perspective, I find it super enjoyable. Michael is just a straight up fucking demon and I can just laugh at all the terrible dialog and bizzare character actions without getting too annoyed. Big John and Little John are great too!
I could go on and on about why H3 is at the top of the list, but I think there's enough people coming around to it these days and making videos highlighting it's merits. I will say it probably has my favourite John Carpenter score!
H20 has some truly great moments, there's no doubt.

I Haven't watched rob Zombie's movies but it looks like I never will. For me the very first one is the best and the last saga is actually good so I'll stay with those. H20 sounds like stupid fun, I need to see them. by the way, Halloween 2 is another great classic,dunno I'll give Halloween 3 a try,I watched bits and pieces before but never went for the full experience but hey u called it,maybe is not that bad, I'm waiting for Halloween and día de muertos for these movies to watch.Great ranking Ian, greetings buddy.

the first movie, it had the original jump scares, my mom hated it when I had girlfriends over on Halloween because we always watched the movie marathon, my sister bringing me the original and a VCR to my hospital room the day before surgery, and of course scaring people with the costume since I'm a lean 6'6" with my knife blank. walking when seen and then using my athleticism to sprint and move around things to pop up in front of people was top tier since I live in a somewhat suburban Illinois town. it was my first ever horror movie I liked, the first slasher I ever saw, and while I liked the idea of Michael Myers just being a Boogeyman and being left on a cliffhanger to never be revisited like carpenter and hill intended, if you just take out the relationship with Laurie then you have the human version of a predator hunting it's injured prey which I like that Halloween kills had as his description. if I was left to only watch one horror movie for the rest of my life I'd choose the one I've watched every October multiple times every year for 22 years since I'm 29 going on 30. much love and support for the channel

10: Halloween IV (Dull and a betrayal to the tone of the original)
9: Halloween Resurrection (It's just Halloween Resurrection, isn't it? Lacking the energy this franchise thrives off.)
8: Halloween V (The campy tone is easy to embrace, but it's still a complete mess.)
7: Halloween The Curse Of Michael Myers (Convoluted and unsure of itself, but it sure gets points for shooting for the stars.)
Now onto the good or great entries!
6: Halloween III (Clunky pacing, but it's very ingenious.)
5: Halloween H20 (A return to tension before convolution, and JLC brings it.)
4: Halloween 2018 (The ramped up tension and filmmaking is so wonderful, it's music to the ears. But the dialogue is rough.)
3: Halloween 1978 (Tension unlike any other, it's a phenomenal showcase of direction.)
2: Halloween 2007 (The scariest one, the best Myers. It's the only one that really fucks me up, and that's something I miss from films.)
1: Halloween II 1981 (My baby, forever. The hospital setting is wonderfully used and the film is so to the wall that I want to scream in joy.)
Halloween (1978) will always top My list as it is My go-to flick regardless of time of year/time of day with the sequel right behind it. Thank you for putting together a great list!

I like the Rob Zombie's version on Halloween. Like the reboot of Friday The 13Th it show how Michael Myers became what as well as him being more human. As for the originals there're okay honestly it should have ended with Halloween H20 ( Although watching Halloween kills showing that Michael Myers got arrested 40 years ago make more sense than him walking away from falling from a 2nd story house ).
Rob Zombie's Halloween movies might suck but I gotta say, I've been to like 100's of concerts and his live performance is one of the best shows I've ever been to.
Some of the filthiest riffs ever recorded are on Hellbilly Deluxe. Absolutely filthy, hard to beat.

Yeah but it's been a while since I've seen it so maybe I need to give it another chance. It has excellent music and JJC as Michael is great but I just did not like the humor at all and I really did not like the direction they went with Dr. Sartain.
