I agree Merano is a very nice town I that it is a lot more German speaking than Italian when I stayed in this area with my family in 1998 heard a lot of people speaking German so hence it is very difficult why Italian is less spoken.
Drove 2 times on this road and always enjoyed the fruit plantations, they look perfect. The landscape is totally different when crossing over Reschenpass from Austria into Italy, that's why this is one of my favorite routes over The Alps. Notorious road this one: I remember driving with my dad to skiing in Sulden quite a few times and he would always recall that on this straight of the road 4 people died, in this curve 2 people and so on. It's not as dangerous now as it was in the past with more robust cars and actually a much better road, but be always very careful when driving on it.
