  • In this video, Chandler takes us through his unboxing, overview, and first impressions of the Red Dot Magnifier from Holosun; the HM3X. This affordable magnifier offering from Holosun proves to be a great intro into red dot magnifiers, but time will tell how it holds up in the long run.

    Have both the EoTech G33 and the Holosun HM3X, found we determined little to no difference between the two magnifiers for ease of use, clarity, eye relief. Both functioned well under use. Each did not hinder intended function. A magnifier is a must have item behind a EoTech or Red Dot sight for target identification at range.

    I have both the Vortex 3x and Holosun 3x and I like the holosun better for three reasons. 1) The mount is much more convenient to mount 2) the glass looks much clearer and 3) the eye relief and scope shadow seems better to me than the Vortex. I have the Vortex 3x paired with their UH-1 Gen 2 and I feel like I have to get much closer to the eye piece to get a good sight picture. The magnified objects look good but when I compare to the Holosun 512c and the 3x the Holosun is a bit more forgiving on the eye piece and slightly clearer. I was impressed with the Holosun I purchased another to go with a Holosun 510c. I’m more of an LPVO person but there is no arguing a holographic or red dot is very fast. But going beyond 3x, I would rather take an LPVO than say a 4 or 5x magnifier.

    I paired the hm3x with the Holosun 403r, $330 for the pair. 1/3 co-witness lined up perfectly.
    The eye relief was the thing that kind of surprised me. I normally like to run my stock all the way back. With the hm3x, I have to have my stock all the way to the front, my nose almost touching the charging handle to get a full view with no shadowing. I do like that when I move the magnifier off to the right, I'm able to pop up my mbus rear sight with no interference. Overall I'm happy with the purchase, just need to get used to being up close on my stock.

      You can just barely use them when the magnifier is switched to the side.
      Sometimes they don’t flip up well if the magnifier doesn’t get flipped all the way to the side. That’s on the MBUS Gen 2. I’m not sure about the Gen 3 or pros though.

    I have looked at the Holosun HM3XT and my local retailor sales it for 350.00, I looked on line and found if for 299.00. But then I looked further and found the venerable HM3X which is made of aluminum and about 199.00 on line. For my needs if I find myself in an environment / situation that is too much for the HM3X then I am in way over my head and should be running. I'll be getting one in about a month from the time of this comment. That most likely would be on 09/26/2024.

    Your rifle is set up really close to mine. I am using nights armament ebay sights and I use magpul grey everything including the sling. My olight is even grey. I wrapped the wire in electrical tape to stiffen it up and protect it , it's and held down with 2 zip ties. I don't have to worry anymore if its going to disconnect. The tape kinda pushes it forward and holds it in place. Its the mini, its good but not as good as its bigger brother. I have it on another rifle. I have the 10.5 with flaming pig and the law tactical folding adapter, so I can put in a back pack and take to and from my truck without anyone knowing and freaking out. I highly recommend it. I had that hand stop but played with it too much trying new things and ended up over tightening the screws and they pushes through the plastic making it useless. I replaced it with more of those great rail covers. Sorry longer than needed my way of saying you have great taste in affordable but really good upgrades. Beautiful rifle.

    Need to clear up something you said about the Vortex being awkward to manipulate because of the plunger being on the wrong end if you flip it. This only applies to their older 3X model, the VMX-3T. The newer Micro3X does not have a plunger and can be easily and conveniently flipped over and used that way, if the shooter so chooses. I also find that the Holosun HM3X tends to be not as solid on the rail, and can be accidentally shaken off a setting. If one gently shakes the rifle with the HM3X installed, one can feel and hear a rattle. These symptoms are not present with the Micro3X. However, the HM3X does have amazing glass for a unit at the $200 price level. Also, the eye relief and a sight picture could be easier to acquire for the less experienced with the HM3X because it is longer, thus being closer to the shooter’s eye. It’s a personal preference: if you don’t mind the extra bit of weight and mass on the rifle, you’re maybe not perfect on acquiring a sight picture, the HM3X might be for you. If you want less weight and mass with great clarity and want an unlimited, unconditional, lifetime guarantee, and don’t mind paying about $100 more, the Micro3X is more likely going to be your choice. I think it would be prudent for you to do the research BEFORE making a statement, even with a disclaimer. It’s lazy.

    • @RangeDay
      @RangeDay  2 года назад +1

      Appreciate the feedback! Some really good points you’ve got in there. I have no doubt that Vortex micro is a great option as well!
      However, research was done comparing the apples to apples $200 to $200 price of the standard Vortex 3MX-3T to the HM3X! The extra $100 for the vortex micro wasn’t really the comparison I was trying to go for for the purposes of this budget magnifier, sort of for the same reason why the EOTech G30 wasn’t in the fight either. It was more a comparison of good intro magnifiers for those who are new to the subject!
      And for the price and features of the HM3X, it seemed like the best option for me. But that will all be tested in reviews down the line. After all it is a first impressions and opinion! Thanks for the comment!

    • @RangeDay
      @RangeDay  6 месяцев назад

      I don’t have an exact count but I’ll share that the combo basically takes up all of the rail space over a standard receiver save for maybe 2-3 slots of adjustment.
      The optic takes up around 7 slots while the magnifier base is about 5. But the clearance needed to flip the magnifier up and down is 2 empty rail slots so it won’t hit the optic.
      If I slide it all forward, and still keep it all on the receiver (not hand guard) you can fit back up irons. I don’t like the eye relief as much with this setup though.

      The way I have mine set up, I swing the magnifier to the right side of the receiver, and it doesn’t impact my FOV much at all.

      The magnifier comes set up to swing to the right by default. However, you are able to detach the optic from the base and swap it around to flip it left for whatever you prefer.
      As for the eye relief for the hunting rifle, that is all going to be dependent on what optic you pair it with, and what kind of rail space you have on top as well. But as long as you pair the magnifier with a non magnified optic, I wouldn’t see any issues.

    Hmmmm, not sure just why a magnifier would be needed,but I do wonder if it would work with my vortex strike eagle

    • @RangeDay
      @RangeDay  3 года назад +2

      A magnifier will help with reaching out with a 1x optic like a red dot or holographic sight.
      If you’re referring to the LPVO Strike Eagle, I don’t know if it would work even if there was the rail space for it.

    Idk if you'll see this but are you still able to flip your rear sight up with it to the right?

    • @RangeDay
      @RangeDay  2 года назад +1

      Mine does. But just barely.
      I have MBUS GEN 2 sights and the adjustment knob is on the right for those rear sights, so when I have the magnifier flipped right, and flip up the backup sights, the backup sight springs up into place and the adjustment knob is right up against the magnifier. I doubt you could slide a sheet of paper between them.
      If you flip your magnifier left you would have much more room. Or, if you MBUS Pro backups it probably wouldn’t be an issue either.

      I use Troy Industries metal flip up sights w/Tritium which lay down under the magnifier until needed at rear last slot of upper receiver. Going forward magnifier then EoTech. Flip the magnifier to side or take magnifier off and drop in drop pouch. No real need for iron sights unless failure of EoTech battery or being hit by bullet. Sight in EoTech at 36 yards. Use hold marks on site image. Navy Seal buddy put me on to using 1/2” up to 1” riser for EoTech and Magnifier or even LPVO’s use 45 degree red dot or iron sites on side of weapon. Object is with weapon in high ready, just bring weapon up to eye without scrunching neck to see sight. Faster response, faster shot wins. Riser is being used by Special Operations people. View Milspec MoJo’s RUclips video talking about risers with optics. UTG or I think Yankee Hill has risers. 1/2” seems most popular. Edited this… EoTech 558, night vision capable uses AA batteries, most common. OR….EXPS3 uses CR123 battery.

    How heavy is that ar

    • @RangeDay
      @RangeDay  2 года назад +2

      I don’t have an accurate enough scale to measure it. I have a scale that reads it at 8 lb unloaded, but I don’t believe that. It seems lighter and that scale isn’t really meant to be used for that low of weight.
      However, the EOTech and Holosun Magnifier do add a top heavy characteristic to the pistol that I haven’t decided if I will keep or not. (the pair weigh just under 1.5 lb together). This particular optic combo may switch over to the 16” rifle build that we put together.
      The gun is still extremely easy to handle with all the attachments shown due to its overall length and where the weight sits on the gun.
      When I can get a better measurement, I’ll update this. Apologies for the answer, but I hope it helps!

      @@svt283 I have a 20oz LVPO which I believe is the same weight as the 512+ Holosun hm3x on my 16" non-lightweight build. The whole rifle weighs little more than 9 lbs unloaded without any light or laser. You definitely need a lightweight build if you don't want to carry a sub 10lb rifle around.

    Lost all credibility when i saw you bridged the optic onto your hand guard

    • @RangeDay
      @RangeDay  10 месяцев назад +1

      That was a mistake on my end at the time, it was a result of trying to keep those backup sights there.
      The clamp for the EOTech was on the upper only, however some of that front section went over onto the hand guard.
      It never gave me any issues, but it’s good practice to avoid that, as you pointed out. Believe it or not, people do make mistakes once in a while.
      That optic was moved onto another gun shortly after addressing that issue when I removed the rear flip up backup sight.

    Seems to me, a lefty, that the Holoson magnifier will be in the way of the sight when canted over to the right. Could they make the canting mechanism a left/right option? Anyone actually tried to use this magnifiers as a lefty? Oops, I looked further and noted you can turn the mount around and get a left handed option. My bad.
