One time my aunt visited from upstate, and she brought a VHS tape--not a published tape, but a copy of a copy. She told us it was the latest project my cousin Vence had worked on for the Gaithers, and we all sat in the living room watching it. I was fascinated because wow, not just a new cartoon, but a new EXCLUSIVE cartoon my COUSIN helped make! It remains a memory I'm proud of...even if this was the result. Cousin Vence is an amazing songwriter and a great guy, and seeing "I liked the songs" being a takeaway is a truly cool thing to come across this far down the line. I know he would spend full nights pacing and writing sheet music, and I always liked it when we would get a cassette single from down the way. I have a lot of Opinions about Christian animation, it is a brand of "we can't do it but we will anyway" unique to the churches I grew up in and there is a lot of history there, but...heck, I'm just proud of my cousin right now. Being real, though, the morals may be nicer than *certain other cartoons* which may or may not start with C and S, but the journeys to get them across are delightfully strange, the animation can be memeworthy at times, as well as the dialogue... ("But noooooooo, I gotta run a RETRAAAAAAACTIIIIIIIION. I got to stick with the f a c t s!") and the music is... really good, actually. Whoever was in charge of it really knew how to compose. Rezz well, I was talking more about the squash and stretch style rather then the technique, you always need a bit of it to keep the animation from looking blocky and stiff but the style is where it is pretty pronounced in nearly all the movements. Looks really good in 2D if done right but almost always looks really weird in 3D except in certain circumstances.
I watch horror movies and games at night on a regular basis, and I've gotta say, this video has been sitting in my "watch later" list for so long because of how unsettling this cartoon was to me.
Me, drops to my knees seeing Gaither's Pond: "Dear lord why have you forsaken us so!?!" God hears me screaming: "Someone's watching Gaither's Pond again."
That "Mr. Poe and Yogul" atrocity looks much more entertaining than "Gaither's Pond." It looks like some 4chan guys shitposting purposefully bad animation.
I have the feeling that they looked at Veggietales, and came to the conclusion that what people loved about it was that it was CG, and not the fact that... well, Veggietales is well-written, has decent voice-acting, and the characters are cute-looking rather than ugly blobby fish with giant people chins and teeth and... just no.
i remember watching gaither's pond and mr.poe & yogul at my granny's house on saturdays when i was younger because i could only watch the christian channels until 7pm. i thought it was a fever dream. this brought back the painful, painful, memories.
Do you know about Gerbert? That chicken nugget looking SOB is my jam. If you guys didn't watch it growing up Brutalmoose has done great reviews of several episodes.
4:36 a T pose actually the default pose that most models have when you load them in, meaning they just put the characters in a room without adjusting the pose at all
Yeah, it's supposed to be so you can rig up model skeletons without making anything overlap and also so you can easily access all the body parts TO move them. As opposed to G-Mod style ragdolls where you just have to grab a limb and hope it's the right one.
My grandparents pretty much only had christian cartoon movies and shows, shirley temple movies, and the original care bears series to watch at their house. They were pastors and had morning and evening bible readings for as long as i have known. While i never watched gaither's pond, i distinctly remember the trailer playing on the small tv screen in the van. The memories that this series brings back are actually very good and makes me nostalgic for the time where i didn't know much about politics and i didn't have to hide parts of myself. Bittersweet, i know, but still, i love seeing saber review some of the more obscure stuff i grew up with and proving to my brain that all this stuff wasn't some insane fever dream. 😊
Rafael Dantas yeah the salamander was created by different people, who wanted to animate the whole show. Their animations and models were stupendous, and the creators just went with their OWN animation.
If I remember correctly, there was a species of pufferfish in the rivers of Kalimantan. They don’t actually have spikes but, they have incredibly sharp teeth, and have been suspected to be the reason why a lot of kids got their peepees cut off...
The line between "trying to make art" and "trying to cash in" gets really murky and difficult to define in Christian media. Even if we take the creators at their word regarding their "mission," it's kind of both and neither. They're really just trying to get their message in front of as many eyes as possible. In that sense, they would probably argue that their product is more meaningful and "true" than mainstream media, which they would argue is just in it for the money. But at the same time, they don't measure how "good" their product is by the same standards that true artists would (creating art for arts' sake) - they measure it by how far they can spread their doctrine (They might phrase it as "How many lives we've touched"). In that sense, selling as many DVDs as possible kind of _is_ the objective. Speaking as someone who grew up in the evangelical world, it's a very difficult mindset to grapple with. I think many of these people are sincere in what they're trying to do, and they think they're doing genuine good. But it's a much different version of "good" than how others might define it.
I think you're probably right. Also, I suspect there is some reluctance among people in their church community to criticize, because that would be "shallow" to focus on the visual rather than the message. On the other hand, the creators might simply shrug off any criticism as attacks from the devil. There seems to be a lot of very laughable Christian media out there, and I can't help but feel embarrassed by it, and then guilty for feeling embarrassed. But bad Christian art like this is problematic. The ugliness and poor quality is distracting from the message. They are doing a disservice to their mission by wrapping something amazing- the message of the Gospel- in something most everyone would turn away from in disgust.
...And then there are Christians who genuinely think some of these sloppy, questionable Christian media are good because they contain good messages, which only propagates the problem. Which is a real shame because Christianity did inspire many of the greatest works of art in history. Just go look at the Renaissance or Baroque art. Even in the Golden Age of Hollywood, Biblical epic was a popular genre, and films like Ben-Hur and Ten Commandments are some of the most monumental works of cinema while still being religious and reverent. Garbage like Gaither's Pond does not help spread the message, it just turns us Christians into bunch of Bible-thumping laughingstocks! Really, these abominations make me appreciate VeggieTales that much more because the creators infused the show with memorable characters, simplistic animation that takes advantage of the low budget, and child-friendly humor that even adults can find funny. Yet, they created it as a mission, not commerce. Ironically, it is when the secular industry took over that VeggieTales devolved into what it is today with VeggieTales in the House (sigh) With that said, if you look carefully, there are other great Christian media being produced elsewhere. You've got radio shows like Adventures in Odyssey, Max Lucado's children's books, Superbook (the original ANIME series, not the CGI remake, mind you) or even recent films like Passion of the Christ or Hacksaw Ridge. You also have films like The Mission and Martin Scorsese's Silence, or TV miniseries like Jesus of Nazareth by Franco Zeffirelli. Want some quality Christian animation? How about Testament: the Bible in Animation, or Animated Stories from the Bible by Richard Rich, or Hanna-Barbera's The Greatest Adventure Stories from the Bible? Even Glen Keane (one of the greatest Disney animators of all time!) wrote and illustrated Christian children's book series called Adam Raccoon. Speaking of animation, there are many Christians working in the secular entertainment industry and they try to infuse their beliefs into the work they make, even when the work is not blatantly religious.
The thing that a lot of these Christian animation groups seem to forget is that the original Veggie Tales had stuff for kids that weren't religious It gave you good life messages and some religious stuff, but also actually entertaining stories and characters, as well as pretty good animation and designs Not sure if I can say the same for the new version but ya know
Veggie Tales was Christian, but also a genuine show. I loved it as a kid. It was entertaining, not something Ma shoved on the TV you had to bear through for an hour. Good characters, neat stories, and real lessons. You could've removed all the Jesus and still had an entire show. That's how you make good Christian media. Make it good without having to hinge on the God. Because kids don't actually understand the scope of God.
Check out Simon the Lamb by Precious Moments and The Crippled Lamb by StarToons Animation. Those two are actually decent movies that respect their audience Christian or not.
heh, I remember Veggietales. sigh, I think I know the other reason I don't like eating vegetables, or at least subconsciously. "and the water became Tomato Juice" and the tomato passes out, that was pure comedy gold back then, hehe.
There are a few good lines in this thing, which is sort of unfortunate considering it's not a very good series in general... "Big Monster. Unstoppable. Certain doom." "Ok."
I feel like somebody locked Alex Jones in a room with the show playing on repeat when he was a kid for probably several years of his childhood before he started having his own show and going off about gay frogs and fake news.
the thing is: gay frogs actually exist, chemicals actually DO mess with the frogs that brings a decline upon their populations. this is the one thing he's actually right about. and if Alex Jones is right about something, you know that there is something wrong. i'm actually glad that we have people like Alex. they're funny (even if not intentionally) and we can take them as indicators. if the lunatics are correct, then you know that the world desperately needs to do something, or else we're all screwed.
Christians make remarkable horror. Case in point: This and Scott Cawthon. Scott's FNAF series was inspired from critique on his CHRISTIAN games, since the animals looked like hellspawn. So he made a horror game and it became a hit.
I remember being shown this as a kid, and tbh, I only watched it a couple times for the music... I can't believe I forgot how horrifying this animation is. This is hilarious even by 1990s standards. My dad was super into Gather Vocal Band, The Eagles, and Boston when I was a kid, so I listened to a fair amount of that growing up. I don't listen to then much now (because my childhood kinda burnt me out on southern gospel music tbh), but the Gathers have had some great singers and have had friends of the group with great voices sing with them over the years. One of their former lead singers, Guy Penrod, has a crazy good voice. He went out and did his own work over the last 10-15 years. Haven't followed him much, but his Breathe Deep album actually has some really good songs if you're into country.
Like 4yrs late to the party but on 14:50 my family still uses the 'Toy Story' Barbie when the stragglers are leaving the party. "Buh-bye, buh-bye, uhh...buh-bye, have a nice day! Are they all gone??"
i have Gaither's Pond on VHS. I saw it in a thrift store sometime last year and instantly knew it needed to be a part of my "bad animated movies" collection
I actually remember when i was young, like in the first grade, my school gave out free tickets to some church showing of Wobots. My brother won some kind of box set with all the episodes of this show and Wobots. Somehow I rember it vividly.
As a Christian I have a serious question, why do a lot of Christian media have a repetition for low quality stuff like this? The only few surprisingly decent ones that come to mind besides VeggieTales would have to be "Simon The Lamb" by Precious Moments from 1994 (Heck any Direct-To-Video by Precious Moments), The Crippled Lamb by StarToons Animation, "Theo Presents", "The Lion of Judah" (2011), and Dreamwork's Prince Of Egypt since both put their heart and soul into their works and are very genuine. Helps that I really admire "Precious Moments" because of how genuine and friendly the company is and how harmless the characters from their Direct To Video animated short films to character and animal illustrations. They even collaborated with Disney in the past and the merchandise and stuffed animals look so adorable. Even EG Daily, Christine Cavanaugh, and Kath Soucie voiced the sheep characters in Simon The Lamb.
Nyanpire The Cat I think it has to do with the stigma of being associated with a religion in today's world. Most major animation studios (aside from the examples you listed) wouldn't want their name associated with christianity, so any ideas for movies or shows are left to small studios or people with no background in animation. We've seen the results of those projects. I remember as a kid watching a cartoon series about three kids getting transported into biblical times by an ancient scroll. It was really well animated and the stories were balanced between being kid friendly, yet maintaining the seriousness of the source material. I wish I could remember the name of it. The three kids were a blond girl and 2 boys. One boy wore a blue baseball cap and had curly black hair and I can't remember anything about the other boy.
If I remember correctly, that specific series might had been animated by Hannah-Barbera (Under the name "Hannah Barbera Home Video") in the early 1990's. Since I remember seeing the logo before the actual video began.
Nyanpire The Cat I think these people believe that just because it's about God they don't have to put in any effort. Doesn't help that other Christians buy this crap, thus encouraging them to make more crap.
Honestly? Laziness (and greed). They have a built-in audience that will buy it regardless of quality, so if they make it as cheap as possible, they can maximize profit. It's a very cynical, worldly, and hypocritical approach, but it seems to work. You see it even more with live-action movies. I am not a Christian, but Ben-Hur (the Heston version) is easily one of the greatest movies I've ever seen; nowadays, "Christian" movies are just cheaply-made, preachy, often hateful garbage like War Room and the God's Not Dead series.
Good Memory you have there, found it. The Greatest Adventure: Stories from the Bible en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Greatest_Adventure:_Stories_from_the_Bible
when you mentioned the photos for the imdb page I went to go see if it was real, and the pictures on the dorbees page is an absolute hellscape, it's 1/4th fannart of it, 1/2 furries and 1/4 graduation photos. Absolute disaster.
If I recall correctly, IMDB works a bit like a bassackwards version of a wiki-anyone with an account can add content, but only someone on the staff can edit or remove it. And judging by how Amazon runs its other businesses, it's likely that the "staff" was all laid off years ago because they don't want to pay people.
Saber: You gotta love seeing "Gospel" in a spooky font. ( 19:37 ) Me, fingergunning my screen: More like *"GOTHSPEL"* No one's gonna see this, it's been five years since the vid came out, but if you do, please clap
Omg I forgot this existed! So the Gaither's actually hail from a town next to mine, like the 4-H fairground for my town takes place where they were from. My religious grandparents absolutely love them so I'd watch this every time I slept over. They probably still have the VHS.
I'm so glad my christain grandmother gave us Veggietales tapes as a child and not Gaither's Pond tapes. I would have been so creeped out by the cursed animation.
Ok I don’t know if anyone else noticed this but at 24:28 they literally start playing the Katamari music since the salamanders are all rolling the huge stone- I literally searched up the Katamari music and IT’S LITERALLY THE SAME MUSIC 💀 I don’t even know how I noticed that-
the problem is for religious people trying to create cartoons. I'm religious but I feel most of them don't respect their religion enough to make something good
I feel like it comes from a place of pride rather than passion, like the idea that they have to made something Jesus-tastic to get holy points or something, and everyone plays along because it’s “Christian” instead of working from vision and inspiration.
I feel like it just comes from knowing what your doing, like any good animator. Prince of Egypt was probably not made by many religious people, but it was made by people who are passionate in their craft and respect the story. Don’t get me wrong, not everything has to be high budget, VeggieTales is very charming, and yt is full of indie animators who make some amazing stuff, but if it’s just a few people who have no animation experience who may or may not be exploiting Christians who just want some good animated content, of course it’s not gonna be good.
This is shameful, disturbing and gives me second hand embarrassment as a Christian even though I wasn’t even born yet when this was made. Also politics don’t belong in children’s entertainment.
Thatone Shitposter Joseph: The King of Dreams and Prince of Egypt aren't just Christian stories, and they don't preach Christianity, so I wouldn't call them Christian movies.
Here's something else I've noticed with these "Christian" cartoons: there's no God, Jesus, or anything really to do with Christianity in them! Even VeggieTales followed or adapted familiar Bible stories and Biblical figures in a reverent way. Where did all these talking animals come from? Why did that Joshua and the Promised Land have a naked anthro lion, time travel, and a dozen other WTF stuff in it? Why do none of these cartoons feature even a Bible verse (cited and all) the way VeggieTales has the courtesy to do? These Christian cartoons have NO Christianity or Christ in them! "The Prince of Egypt" retold the actual story of Moses WITH Moses, the Hebrews, Pharaoh, even God Himself; no CGI anthros or nonsensical sci-fi there. "The Miracle Maker" did the same for Jesus, with incredibly skilled stop-motion AND occasional traditional animation to boot. Christian media should be focused on Jesus and not child pandering gimics and cheap effects.
I absolutely agree. Even as someone who hasn't decided on their religion, it's very saddening seeing so many people throw away the message they were trying to display of kindness and love for their God and replace it with their love for money. They only make ChristIan shows to cash in on all the parents who want to show them Christian media. Although I must agree, Prince of Egypt was beautiful and I loved VeggieTales growing up.

Only good Christian media I have ever laid eyes on was Larry Boy and the Giant Fib.
People that make this kind of media seem to have no sense of aesthetic whatsoever.
Well said
...And then there are Christians who genuinely think some of these sloppy, questionable Christian media are good because they contain good messages, which only propagates the problem.
Ironically, it is when the secular industry took over that VeggieTales devolved into what it is today with VeggieTales in the House (sigh)
With that said, if you look carefully, there are other great Christian media being produced elsewhere.

The thing that a lot of these Christian animation groups seem to forget is that the original Veggie Tales had stuff for kids that weren't religious
It gave you good life messages and some religious stuff, but also actually entertaining stories and characters, as well as pretty good animation and designs
Not sure if I can say the same for the new version but ya know
The VeggieTales Show will be bringing the franchise back to its roots.
Exactly. I grew up in a home that wasn’t super religious, and I LOVED veggie tales.
Don't worry, they brought the old format back. And they're more focused on teaching good morals than religion
My favorite part of veggietales was that it wasn’t always Christian. Sometimes it was just funny.
I am thankful for my old school showing me only veggie tales instead of this monstrosity.
I'm thankful this didn't exist when I was in elementary school (I think.. I hope.)
I love veggietales
Check out Simon the Lamb by Precious Moments and The Crippled Lamb by StarToons Animation. Those two are actually decent movies that respect their audience Christian or not.
heh, I remember Veggietales. sigh, I think I know the other reason I don't like eating vegetables, or at least subconsciously.
"and the water became Tomato Juice" and the tomato passes out, that was pure comedy gold back then, hehe.

If I recall correctly, IMDB works a bit like a bassackwards version of a wiki-anyone with an account can add content, but only someone on the staff can edit or remove it. And judging by how Amazon runs its other businesses, it's likely that the "staff" was all laid off years ago because they don't want to pay people.

the problem is for religious people trying to create cartoons.
I'm religious but I feel most of them don't respect their religion enough to make something good
I know
Which is why the Prince of Egypt is great, they weren't trying to be religious, but just tell a story.
