If we consider Alastor's origins and his implied connection to Louisiana Voodoo, then that shadow that follows him around takes on a new meaning. I think Alastor's soul was always powerful, because he *prepared* to go to Hell. He knew there was an afterlife, and did what he had to do to ensure that, when he stepped through those brimstone gates, he would do so in brutal style. He took charge of his own soul that way, but also by accepting a deal that made him even stronger. One thing I've taken note of is Alastor's use of tentacles, as it feels off-key from the rest of his design. His enlarged, horrific demon form is fitting, but the tendrils from his back just feel... off. Like a power granted to him, rather than his own. What if his deal granted him those abilities, at the cost of his placement? And this ties into another little thing I caught. The microphone! Remember, in the Pilot, we saw that the radio could speak, and was what made the laugh-tracks and such for Alastor. Now, it's purely an object, meaning it's possible it's role in the story has changed. He passed the microphone over to Charlie for "Ready for This," and at the start of the assault on the hotel a pair of odd details to me. Why his, and not the one she'd been provided? Why not any other microphone? Did it give her some kind of boost? And why was it, after it was destroyed, Alastor lost so much power? He clearly still had his shadow energy; he used that to depart from the fight easily enough, so the destruction of the microphone didn't remove *all* his powers, but only some. If so, what ones? What if that is how his deal-maker is connected to him? His radio is used transfer his newfound powers, while also letting his dealholder to keep an eye on him. That's why, after it was broken, he was so open about talking about rebellion.

@nastyoldbeech My argument was precisely that; I theorized his Shadow is a part of his Louisiana Voodoo, not his deal. The deal, I feel, is linked more to his radio and radio tower; hence why when his radio was broken, his strength waned, but he could still use his shadow power.
Also, it was shadow who grabbed the "staff" to take him away. While his eyes were changing colour between black and red as if he was trying to regain control.
I saw a theory that he is smiling on his own, but when he struck a deal with Charlie, he smiled so hard that he needed to use his magic to hold his face together, as he finally got a chance to get out of his deal that was limiting his powers, which is what he had been waiting for for many years, so for that to finally happen, he almost ripped his own face from smiling so hard. I feel like this makes more sense, as those stitches wouldn't be preventing him from not smiling, they would be preventing him from smiling too hard, as they are stitching his mouth together, not pulling his lips apart.

True but I think it has something to do with his life, while I'm not sure what would cause it perhaps it was because he smiles too hard idk, the point is I think it's one of the torturous parts of his Demonic form after death probably in addition to the fact he's a deer which are usually skittish creatures, like Angel's feet the stitches are meant to dig into a insecurity as punishment in hell, what is that insecurity? I think that he is incapable of not smiling. Maybe some kind of curse that he has learned to use to his advantage. But when he is ALONE in his radio tower after the battle having a full-blown meltdown, he still smiles despite not needing to do so for anyone else to see. And in fact, he starts pulling at his face like he wishes he could stop smiling in that moment, but he can't and it's literally driving him crazy because it's something he CAN'T actually control. I think that if he broke the curse, he would still continue to smile the majority of the time because it has actually served him so well (like he explained to Charlie), but there would be times when he would drop the smile and that would be so extremely unnerving to see.

The coloration of the magic matches his own, he also speaks a lot about the power of a smile so I think the magic forced smile is his own doing so he doesn't slip up. Especially as it appears by charlie that the act of making a deal shows for a brief moment your true demonic form, her effects and his effects both became apparent. I think the more telling sign is his eyes at 2:22. One goes black, which I believe implies he's in a deal with someone above him. Like how angel dust has one black eye, and all the souls completely owned (rather than just in a deal) have both eyes black. Though this theory runs into a hitch with Nifty, who its implied Alastor owns but her one eye is red. BUT they seem to imply at a friendship between the two before the battle, so this makes me wonder if Nifty is owned, or rather just enjoys working with Alastor and is actually free.
It would make sense that she might just be very loyal to him and not mind being summoned by him, because she is naturally feisty and maybe equally demented as him.

The idea of the stitches forcing Alastor’s smile into permanence is definitely an interesting one, but as a side note, Niffty might be a worthy factor to consider in anything Alastor-related. She _was_ depicted with a giant sewing needle as her weapon in older (as in, circa 2015-ish) art, and Alastor’s shadow dolls have *very* visible stitching, as does his creepy giant form at the end of “Stayed Gone”. His pride would *_definitely_* never let him admit it, but maybe Niffty is playing a bigger role in keeping him together than we previously realized. I do wonder about Alastor’s “You should know better than anyone what a soul can accomplish when they take charge of their own fate.” Not just because I genuinely don’t see the connection between that notion and Adam, but because of what it could potentially imply about Alastor and his power. He has always had this air of a self-made man, but the unknown details make him even more intriguing. I can’t wait for Season 2 to give us more of this asshole, the lesser assholes, the Morningstars, and Sir Pentious 😈
I actually like this theory. Keep in mind that when he was still alive, Alastor was shot because he was mistaken for a deer while hiding the body of one of his serial killer hunt victims. What if Alastor wasn't only shot, but his body consequently also was being ravaged by hunting dogs, so that when he arrived in hell, he actually was a mess? Coincidentally a mess that Nifty came upon and decided to sew back together, giving him a grand smile because she herself smiles all the time? I don't mean this in a "Nifty owns Alastor's soul" kind of way - she just happened to stumble upon his ravaged body lying in an alleyway of Hell and decided in a split second to sew it back together just because she could? In all interactions between Alastor and Nifty, we see them being quite friendly towards each other, so maybe her stitching him back together could be another reason why Alastor is so fond of her? Because she actually gave him a head start again when arriving in Hell? It could add another layer to the reason why Alastor and Nifty seem to be such good buddies as we see them in the show.

And as Sinners’ forms often reflect their deaths, it might very well be that he arrived as a mess desperately trying to keep himself together. Did a good job of it, but perhaps Niffty caught him out of it once; and in exchange for her soul to guarantee her keeping quiet, he allowed her to stitch him up. ’Course, once she was done, she stuck around him anyway for his Bad Boy Energy and Al figured “you know what? For the smile theory, people keep saying he has stitches to "Keep his mouth shut, not make him smile." while that is correct, he actually has both! X Stitches at the corners of his mouth holding it into a smile. You could argue that it's just his demon/half demon form BUT! In the pilot when he's seen watching Charlie's news report his shadow has the X stitches too. Also, when he was saying "Radios not dead..." his shadow was frowning for a few seconds. I think his smile is stitched and his shadow reflects that, but at the same time it shows his true emotions, along with his cane.
I agree that it is ironic that Charlie refuses to hurt anyone for Alastor but is willing to accept information on how to kill angels, but you have to remember that this is life or death now for Charlie and the hazbin crew, they have to defend themselves and if they don’t know how, they all die. And Charlie tried doing it peacefully by talking to heaven, but they wouldn’t listen, and Adam threatened he was coming for her hotel first🤷🏾♂️ what was she supposed to do? My theory is that as alestor was murdering his way up the ranks he picked a fight with Lucifer and got absolutely destroyed, to save his own skin he sold his soul and that's why he had such an immediate hatred for the guy.

I partly have a theory that he put those in to keep him smiling. I keep thinking of the comic with his mother and how he said that you are never fully dress without a smile. Him stitching his mouth into a forever smile would help keep what he said and keeps his true motives hidden. It could also be a rebellion to who ever controls his soul to show that they didn’t break his spirit.

Question: So, if Alastor is choosing to smile for ‘control’ or ‘power’ which are both valid, however, when in the last scene why doesn’t he stop smiling? I think Alastor made a deal with Roo before he died. My theory is she reached through the veil and talked to Alastor in his dreams under the guise of a Voodoo demon or "Loa". Offered him power to kill 'evil' people. Something he wanted to do to begin with. When he dies, he panics because he couldn't kill anymore and thinks he lost favor of the entity he made the deal with, but she reaches out again and tells him to go after the overlords if he wants to continue killing. Because they are the most evil of the bunch in hell. She then hides in his shadow. He eventually gets beaten by Vox, but gets away with intervention from Roo. Lilith offers to rehabilitate Alastor in return for him watching over Charlie and her endeavors. Which is why they both disappeared for 7 years. Roos stipulation was that Lilith couldn't interfere with anything after Alastor took over with watching over Charlie. The smile is a pretense to hide his intention to break his deal with Roo by using his favor with Charlie to convince Lilith to help him. He needs to keep it up because she is literally always watching him.
You know how alastor usually has a shadow of a demon self of him he made a deal with lilith/charlies mom is most peoples theory because he used to gamble and he lost in gambling and gave lilith his soul because lilith has been gone for seven years and so has alastor been gone for seven years so in that time they might have made a deal

you can see if someones has sold their soul or not. If they have red eyes they have not sold there soul and owns other souls. If they have yellow eyes they have not sold their soul and does not own any. If they have black eyes such as husk someone owns their soul angels is half and half because Val only partly owns her soul and alastors other form has the black eyes while his normal form has red which means he might be trying to hide it.
I am really offended because I look off like al does when I am trying to remember something because when I lie it takes less effort than remembering something over an hour ago.
I wonder if he didn't sell his soul and the deal he made was to protect Charlie. If he is the strongest overlord then the only ones who can hurt him are angels and demons like Lilith. If I remember the deal he made with Charlie correctly, he does not need to protect the hotel or it's inhabitants. To me it only makes sense for him to go against the angels is if the deal is to protect Charlie. Charlie fought the angels so Alastor was forced to fight too. It would also make sense why he is so pissed. Charlie almost got him killed and there was nothing he could do about it, and from what I gather Alastor hates not being in control. I don't think he can make deals that directly or indirectly harm Charlie.

I dont think so. Alastor is not forced to smile but does it to make others believe he is in full control at all times, even when he is hurt. Alastor’s face just doesnt make sense with emotion. Imagine alastor being sad. Possibly Adam owns alastors soul, but does not force him to smile. The stitches are to stop him from smiling too hard, as the deal is something he has been waiting for for years, which made him smile so much that his magic had to stop him.
Definitely some flaws in your logic but a decent analysis for the most part. For example: Charlie being hypocritical/paradoxical for refusing to make a deal where she has to hurt somebody. Yes she is getting information on how to hurt/kill angels but she is doing so she can defend her people from those seeking to kill them. He clearly still had his shadow energy; he used that to depart from the fight easily enough, so the destruction of the microphone didn't remove *all* his powers, but only some. If so, what ones? What if that is how his deal-maker is connected to him? His radio is used transfer his newfound powers, while also letting his dealholder to keep an eye on him. That's why, after it was broken, he was so open about talking about rebellion.

@nastyoldbeech My argument was precisely that; I theorized his Shadow is a part of his Louisiana Voodoo, not his deal. The deal, I feel, is linked more to his radio and radio tower; hence why when his radio was broken, his strength waned, but he could still use his shadow power.
Also, it was shadow who grabbed the "staff" to take him away. While his eyes were changing colour between black and red as if he was trying to regain control.
I saw a theory that he is smiling on his own, but when he struck a deal with Charlie, he smiled so hard that he needed to use his magic to hold his face together, as he finally got a chance to get out of his deal that was limiting his powers, which is what he had been waiting for for many years, so for that to finally happen, he almost ripped his own face from smiling so hard. I feel like this makes more sense, as those stitches wouldn't be preventing him from not smiling, they would be preventing him from smiling too hard, as they are stitching his mouth together, not pulling his lips apart.

True but I think it has something to do with his life, while I'm not sure what would cause it perhaps it was because he smiles too hard idk, the point is I think it's one of the torturous parts of his Demonic form after death probably in addition to the fact he's a deer which are usually skittish creatures, like Angel's feet the stitches are meant to dig into a insecurity as punishment in hell, what is that insecurity? He's insecure about his lack of control, which is why he sang about it after losing his fight against Adam.

I think that he is incapable of not smiling. Maybe some kind of curse that he has learned to use to his advantage. But when he is ALONE in his radio tower after the battle having a full-blown meltdown, he still smiles despite not needing to do so for anyone else to see. And in fact, he starts pulling at his face like he wishes he could stop smiling in that moment, but he can't and it's literally driving him crazy because it's something he CAN'T actually control. I think that if he broke the curse, he would still continue to smile the majority of the time because it has actually served him so well (like he explained to Charlie), but there would be times when he would drop the smile and that would be so extremely unnerving to see.

I think it would be more interesting if the stitches are actually not forcing him to smile, but the opposite. They're trying to force his mouth closed in a frown. That would make more sense anatomically with how they're arranged. But also it would speak a lot more to Alastor's character, he values the power of a smile very deeply. So him always smiling in spite of the stitches constantly punishing him for it is one of his little ways of rebelling against his enslavement.

I’d like to see a scene where Alastor breaking his smile in front of Charlie showing just true emotions during a dramatic conversation!
I already have a headcanon where he 'betrays' charlie in later seasons, but he's extremely somber about it
hope to aswell, but it has to be the most clincher point in the series I would think.
The coloration of the magic matches his own, he also speaks a lot about the power of a smile so I think the magic forced smile is his own doing so he doesn't slip up.
Especially as it appears by charlie that the act of making a deal shows for a brief moment your true demonic form, her effects and his effects both became apparent.
I think the more telling sign is his eyes at 2:22. One goes black, which I believe implies he's in a deal with someone above him.
Like how angel dust has one black eye, and all the souls completely owned (rather than just in a deal) have both eyes black.

The idea of the stitches forcing Alastor’s smile into permanence is definitely an interesting one, but as a side note, Niffty might be a worthy factor to consider in anything Alastor-related. She _was_ depicted with a giant sewing needle as her weapon in older (as in, circa 2015-ish) art, and Alastor’s shadow dolls have *very* visible stitching, as does his creepy giant form at the end of “Stayed Gone”. His pride would *_definitely_* never let him admit it, but maybe Niffty is playing a bigger role in keeping him together than we previously realized.
I do wonder about Alastor’s “You should know better than anyone what a soul can accomplish when they take charge of their own fate.” Not just because I genuinely don’t see the connection between that notion and Adam, but because of what it could potentially imply about Alastor and his power. He has always had this air of a self-made man, but the unknown details make him even more intriguing. I actually like this theory. Keep in mind that when he was still alive, Alastor was shot because he was mistaken for a deer while hiding the body of one of his serial killer hunt victims. What if Alastor wasn't only shot, but his body consequently also was being ravaged by hunting dogs, so that when he arrived in hell, he actually was a mess? Coincidentally a mess that Nifty came upon and decided to sew back together, giving him a grand smile because she herself smiles all the time? I don't mean this in a "Nifty owns Alastor's soul" kind of way - she just happened to stumble upon his ravaged body lying in an alleyway of Hell and decided in a split second to sew it back together just because she could? In all interactions between Alastor and Nifty, we see them being quite friendly towards each other, so maybe her stitching him back together could be another reason why Alastor is so fond of her? Because she actually gave him a head start again when arriving in Hell? It could add another layer to the reason why Alastor and Nifty seem to be such good buddies as we see them in the show.

I too believe Alastor was mauled by hunting dogs in his death - it _has_ been stated that his dislike of dogs is due to them playing a role in his death, after all. And as Sinners’ forms often reflect their deaths, it might very well be that he arrived as a mess desperately trying to keep himself together. Did a good job of it, but perhaps Niffty caught him out of it once; and in exchange for her soul to guarantee her keeping quiet, he allowed her to stitch him up.
’Course, once she was done, she stuck around him anyway for his Bad Boy Energy and Al figured “you know what? I think I could get used to this.” Perhaps she, like Rosie, has also figured out he’s ace, so she doesn’t actively pursue him, but they just like hanging around each other anyway. For the smile theory, people keep saying he has stitches to "Keep his mouth shut, not make him smile." while that is correct, he actually has both! X Stitches at the corners of his mouth holding it into a smile. You could argue that it's just his demon/half demon form BUT! In the pilot when he's seen watching Charlie's news report his shadow has the X stitches too. Also, when he was saying "Radios not dead..." his shadow was frowning for a few seconds. I think his smile is stitched and his shadow reflects that, but at the same time it shows his true emotions, along with his cane.
For the last time, the stiches are there to keep his face from ripping apart since that's a true smile and not the fake smile he always has.

I agree that it is ironic that Charlie refuses to hurt anyone for Alastor but is willing to accept information on how to kill angels, but you have to remember that this is life or death now for Charlie and the hazbin crew, they have to defend themselves and if they don’t know how, they all die. I partly have a theory that he put those in to keep him smiling. I keep thinking of the comic with his mother and how he said that you are never fully dress without a smile. Him stitching his mouth into a forever smile would help keep what he said and keeps his true motives hidden. It could also be a rebellion to who ever controls his soul to show that they didn’t break his spirit.

The Devil is in the detail. from Customer Service to Voice Acting to Dance Performance, a smile is a crucial part of the act. If Alastor's strings were forcing him to smile, the stitches would be horizontal at the edges of his mouth like human fingers pulling a mouth into a smile, and not vertical across his mouth like a human convict muzzle.

I think Alastor made a deal with Roo before he died.
My theory is she reached through the veil and talked to Alastor in his dreams under the guise of a Voodoo demon or "Loa". Offered him power to kill 'evil' people. Something he wanted to do to begin with.
When he dies, he panics because he couldn't kill anymore and thinks he lost favor of the entity he made the deal with, but she reaches out again and tells him to go after the overlords if he wants to continue killing. Because they are the most evil of the bunch in hell. She then hides in his shadow.
He eventually gets beaten by Vox, but gets away with intervention from Roo. Lilith offers to rehabilitate Alastor in return for him watching over Charlie and her endeavors. Which is why they both disappeared for 7 years. Roos stipulation was that Lilith couldn't interfere with anything after Alastor took over with watching over Charlie.
The smile is a pretense to hide his intention to break his deal with Roo by using his favor with Charlie to convince Lilith to help him. He needs to keep it up because she is literally always watching him.
You know how alastor usually has a shadow of a demon self of him he made a deal with lilith/charlies mom is most peoples theory because he used to gamble and he lost in gambling and gave lilith his soul because lilith has been gone for seven years and so has alastor been gone for seven years so in that time they might have made a deal

you can see if someones has sold their soul or not. If they have red eyes they have not sold there soul and owns other souls. If they have yellow eyes they have not sold their soul and does not own any. If they have black eyes such as husk someone owns their soul angels is half and half because Val only partly owns her soul and alastors other form has the black eyes while his normal form has red which means he might be trying to hide it.

I wonder if he didn't sell his soul and the deal he made was to protect Charlie. If he is the strongest overlord then the only ones who can hurt him are angels and demons like Lilith. If I remember the deal he made with Charlie correctly, he does not need to protect the hotel or it's inhabitants. To me it only makes sense for him to go against the angels is if the deal is to protect Charlie. Charlie fought the angels so Alastor was forced to fight too. It would also make sense why he is so pissed. Charlie almost got him killed and there was nothing he could do about it, and from what I gather Alastor hates not being in control. I don't think he can make deals that directly or indirectly harm Charlie.

I think the theory that Alastor is being forced to smile is quite real. See his colour palette is red and the stitches on his mouth is green.rd and green are opposite of each other on the colour wheel, so whoever did it to Alastor has a green colour palette and their intentions are different from Alastors metaphorically, with the stitches highlighting forceful intentions from the green attacker I think it make sense that Alastor wasn’t smiling on his own will he was being forced by someone who wanted him to smile. I dont think so. Alastor is not forced to smile but does it to make others believe he is in full control at all times, even when he is hurt. Alastor’s face just doesnt make sense with emotion. Imagine alastor being sad. Possibly Adam owns alastors soul, but does not force him to smile. The stitches are to stop him from smiling too hard, as the deal is something he has been waiting for for years, which made him smile so much that his magic had to stop him.
