As a foodie, that was a great video !! Any country I visit, the first place I go is the local market, and talk to the genuine people who work there, whether London,Paris,Amsterdam, always good people who want to help !
Dumaguete is one of my favorite cities in the Philippines. Glad I stumbled upon your videos. I can't believe I just spent my entire Saturday night watching them. Very informative. I got the chance to see Dumaguete again after 14 years. I used to have breakfast at the public market - hot chocolate and budbud. I like the pan de coco too. Please continue posting videos.
Yup! It's not like the market back at home where everything is done behind the scenes and we view and buy everything in nice neat packaging. This is the real deal! It took me a while to get used to it, but it's all pretty normal now - even when you walk in the market and there's the head of a pig sitting on the table.
Ned ad Michell, thank you so much for doing my request of makig a video of the wet market. It really brought back fond memories. I use to go to the market most every day during my 7 years there. It made me smile when I saw the sticky rice and chocolate sauce.I ate it may times.
The fish at 3:50 looks to me as "Manumbok" or Blue Marlin as we call it locally. Very nice fish and simple to prepare just butter/margarine on a sizzling hot plate or pan.
Being in the produce business for 20 years it is so cool to see what the Philippines offers. Almost the same as in the US. A few exotics. I was at the Araneta Market in Quezon City. So cool to see.
White Marlin,Tanigi,Lapu Lapu,Bangus...Love the market...Tuna etc.Can eat healthy in Ph.Fish is so cheap and fresh unbeliveble.Must visit Dumanguete also next trip.Seems to have all you need and some
I love this place. I think best to go i the morning. I pork section can be a bit much (smell and all) in the afternoon. I am glad to be back in Dumaguete actually. I miss the all the great fish.
love the market videos. Other then refrigeration Im sure our meat process here in the usa isnt much different then there its just we dont see it in the open like that. We think it just shows up at the grocery store like magic.
Ned , The long fish if not mistaken is ono or wahoo. Same as we have here . If you like Ahi or yellow fin you should love this . Very delicious . Lightly grill salt and pepper and a squeeze of lemon . You wont be disappointed . Beware the red or blood meat . Thanks you two for the vid . Aloha
Hello Ned & Michell. Ned let's see if I can ID some of the stuff you saw there. First off (@ 03:54 & @ 06:50) is "Tarugho" (Blue/Black Marlin), If you think "kinilaw na tuna" is good, wait till you've tried "kinilaw na tarugho" with sliced sinugbang baboy (charcoal grilled pork belly). Yummm.! @ 04:00. What you referred to as squid is actually cuttlefish. @ 0414.Those rays are great cut into small cubes then cooked with "tuno" (coconut milk) and "kalamunggay, malunggay". @ 05:38 and 05:48. No idea what those are. @ 05:55. That "grey substance" are "tugnus" (baby anchovies I think, not sure though). I Mix in some eggs, a bit of sea salt and form into patties then fry em (think fish burger), put em between "pan de sal" or eat with garlic fried rice. Very delicious. @ 06:30 are green mussels. Nice as soup (guinisang tahong), oven baked on a half shell with some grated cheese on top or you can just toss em over a charcoal grill, wait for them to open, take the meat out & dip in some garlic butter with beer to wash em down. :) Next @ 7:28 is Blue fin tuna. @ 09:17 the butcher is cutting off the cheeks & jowl probably for "sisig". Puto is sticky rice cooked with coconut milk usually eaten with "tsikolate" is (pure cocoa beans chocolate beverage) and ripe mangoes. Oh, and don't take too much tsikolate, specially the "espiso" (thick) stuff, or you'll end up with a buzz or off to sleep. :P And lastly @ 14:40 "Atis" (sugar apple).
***** Thanks, Berny, for that very detailed breakdown. I looooove kinilaw but have only had it with yellow fin tuna. The grilled pork belly is also delicious in just about everything. (Cept maybe halo-halo.) Interesting on the tugnus - I have to try those fishbugers sometime. Ah, I looooove sisig as well - seeing it prepared at that stage was interesting as well - I have heard one of the best parts of the pig is the cheek meat. Thanks again!!!
Hmmm.... Halo-halo with sinugba..? I may try to experiment with that. lol :P With the fish burger do be carefull with the salt. It's easy to use too much; other than that it's easy as pie. The Italians use the pig cheeks for their guanciale (Italian ham). So it ought to be good right :)
Hi Ned and Michell, The hideous gray gloop is octopus all slimmed up together. The dried fish isn't too bad to smell when cooking. BUT after the first time the dried squid was cooked aboard it was forevermore banned. Smelled like burning rubber to me. Doing great you two. Take care, Fred
Over The Rainbow - Philippines The gray stuff were tiny little shrimps or fish - you can see their little black eyeballs. Could be octopus babies or something as well.
Very good place sa merkadohan doon, gusto ko ang lahat mga prutas, mukhang sarap iyon.. Most delicious is the thuna steak and also bangus..but once I have eaten a durian fruit, oh what a smell, some people jumped out of the jeepney when they smelled the durian..(mostly on Mindanao areas, Davao City), smelling like gas, haha
Shawn w. I might switch over to 1080P and cut it down to medium then just process the RAW at a lower bitrate. The 720P only has Super Wide and Normal but gives you a smaller RAW size file than 1080P.
Love going to market early i like fresh fish and whole tuna are cheep and so are prawns trying to find out where i need to go to buy a forequater off beef and iff its possable to buy lamb anywhere
Still living the dream ? Very brave of you to shop here! I remember the fish market in Toledo city In 05 exchange was 58.75 to 1 . Its so bad now its scares me... maybe ill have to pay real money there next time
your a great couple, love your videos and one day i hope to be there for good, i been in the markets of cebu and its the same stuff. seems like fish and meats gone up in price, but still cheaper than USA
good video looks like the markets i saw in palawan. The tuna would be good whole so you know its not contaminated and cut at home parts can be eaten raw sashimi style or with rice.
Looks like a very nice market. Well stocked w fruits and veggies and all the fav types of meats. Seems markets are proportienal to the size of their town/surrounding area; Bay2 is prob smaller. Fruits, Veggies, Rice and small portion of meat, no wonder the majority of Filipino eat a healthier diet than westerners.
Dobiedoo2 Not to mention the majority of them shop everyday and walk all over, no drive throughs or monstrous shopping carts and everything is fresh for the most part.
LOL , as soon as you said "mouse control" about the cat. you reminded me to check our mouse traps. Cooling down here, and the little critters are sneaking inside. My traps stay full. Loved the video. Market there is nicer than Cebu citys Carbon Market. that's the only one I've been to.
Love the market ...not even grossed out by the pig stuff...coz its all great food..really liked all the fish choices...and Tilapia to me is like one of my least fav fish...but the rest..pretty cool
PUBLIC MARKET in the Philippines always fascinates with fresh vegetables, sea foods meats that never get frozens for market. the prices are very reasonable and cheap.
Do you guys see pork tenderloin (not center loin) sold by you? It's the best part of the pig except BACON which is another thing I wonder how available it is in PH. It meets the salt, fat, and sugar requirements over there if it's MAPLE BACON. lol I dig the market videos and wonder too about Kano pricing especially when you're walking around with a camera.
Seafood is expensive everywhere, but they've got to be cheaper in the seafood market than in supermarket groceries. Closer to wholesale price than retail.
hi can you make a blog with all the out takes as I enjoy the mistakes u make makes me laugh but keep the blogs coming they are great whats happening in the garden ? you had the first harvest yet ?
TheLeonard1958 I wish I had kept all my outakes ,especially the ones when I first started. Egads! I have like five or six bloopers of me that I will include in the next video and will keep future ones as they are pretty funny.
When I was very young 3-4 I'd used to go with my mom and dad to those kind of markets. Now I just can't stand it haha And those prices aren't too bad for the amount you're getting.
Market is really no different then going to downtown Honolulu. You would see the same. Prices overall seem much cheaper in Philippines. I would live to see a comparison of prices for Michelle with and without the Kano. Usually different. But, I saw more posted prices in your video then I ever remember. Nice work, get them coming but don't get burned out.
Ned, do you eat things from the market? I heard if you eat something from the market you (as in foreigners) can get sick from it, like drinking the water. I was in the Philippines at Boracay and I was fine up until my second to last day there. I think it was something I drank like a fruit-shake drink that was blended with ice (something I missed as I was being cautious the whole time I was there) while I was island-hopping. I had to see the doctor when I returned to the U.S. and get some antibiotics which cleared me up. It was a great trip though; got to meet the woman of my dreams (after talking to her online for nearly 7 months) there and I am in the process of getting her visa. So despite getting sick, I would do it all over again, and yes, I would definitely visit the Philippines again! It is such a lovely country!
roadkillz78 Yeah, once you get out of the built-up city areas, the Philippines is gorgeous!! As for getting sick, I haven't had any issues in the last 10 months. I probably will at some point, but then again I have gotten food poisoning in the West as well.
about 18 years ago when my wife and I move to Texas, she and some friends where frying "Bullod" or dried fish in the backyard... It smelled so bad that the neighbors called the police... lol!!!
Buy the black marlin it is good! Dried fish may be an acquired taste but I don't plan on acquiring it because I am never eating any. Cook outside only! lol
Philippine Dreams You should the fruit here is great! The only one I know of people having an issue with is durian but I think that one is fantastic as well......lol I'm not that picky
Like the video very much one of your best to date guy I know my wife does not like the wet market in Cebu city and refused to take me lol next trip will go by myself . Take care have a great day . Please say hello to Michelle for me . Bruce
Nice video - This way of shoping will drive me crazy but it is nice to look at when time is not a lack of time. I even have difficult to spend time in our Swedish market places, nowdays thanks to internet it is easy to shop... without moving yourselt to the store. Lazyness is what make us work harder - - - hi hi hi
Don't eat any farm raised fish like tilapia or shrimp. The water is so polluted on the fish farms. They have to medicate the fish and shrimp because of disease. Does Michell negotiate the price? Some Filipinas are very good at negotiating the price. Does Michell eat champorado? My wife eats it and I can't bring myself to eat it.
ok... not to seem like an expert or anything... just speaking out of personal observation and experience. Youre better off going to the supermarket. Youll only spend about 10-20 pesos more. At least your inside aircon and flies aint all up in your food. Go to the Palenke only when it comes to fruits and vegetables. When it come to meat and seafood, go the SM, Robinson, or whatever Supermarket. Same shit! But if you insist on going to the Palenke, always remember. You can haggle..... Prices are not set... but at the end of the day. Usually they don't budge much. Unless youre a "SUKI"... which usually means if you owned a restaurant, Calenderia or something where your buy hundreds of kilos of meat at one time...
I agree, its fine for fruits or vegies ,but I personally would stick to supermarket for meat/seafood..I had to question the cleanliness & the offensive odor around the meat area :(
Roland Tuason ah yes, Roland. I agree that youll find more variety at the Palenke BUT (big butt here). You can also find the same variety in SOME Supermarkets ie clams, fish, mussels, oysters, seaweed, etc etc. Example: JumboJenra Supermarket has a vast variety. I agree that some is limited though so youre right. Just depends what you live close to, I guess.
TokTok Cali Thanks TokTok. The supermarkets here don't have a big variety, especially with seafood, so the market (in the morning) is the best bet in Dumaguete.
hahah Ned my son cant go near the wet market at all we tried to he just throws up cant stand the smell its funny we say we going to the market hahah just to anoy him but we don't we go somewhere else he is only 10 yrs old so funny
Its funny if we go somewhere we just say oh we going to wet market and we don't he wont come same we were in Singapore he smelled the cooking near china town was throwing up I was worried we get a fine no littering but people there were really good helping us .
Hi Ned u really are mean to poor sleepy Michelle dragging her around the market. I've decided to live on fruit alone after seeing so many intestines. It will be Jhies chore to buy the meats. I don't want to see it until it's on my plate and ready to eat. Nonetheless I found it very informative. Thank you for all your descriptive videos. They give a great insight into how my life will be there. V peace.
Nice video.. But I was laughing when I saw your breakfast the sticky rice..it remind me something..I was in southern Leyte for some reason.. Its only one day hinging around with 2 body guard..they order breakfast for me..and that's the sticky rice with Chocolate drink and a brown sugar..I said I don't like the chocolate.I want soft drinks for the sticky rice..and every body In that's rest..laughing at me..and one of the guy teach me how to eat that.really Its so bitter the chocolate.they ask me to poor It on my sticky rice..I thought the chocolate is for to drink!..anyway the fruits like cheaper over there.
Bravo! Well done video! Quite fascinating! The prices are incredible! I'm going to nominate you for a Filipino Emmy. Can you include "smellavision". Keep up the good work!
+AWidgetIHaveNot They have a big bucket underneath with ice, where majority of fishes for sale are...They just get it out when the displayed ones were bought..
Is it possible to buy a whole pig....or even better a pig that we can butcher ourselves...its common for my family to hunt wild pigs. We also raise pigs...etc to home kill too feed our families. Home made sausage's etc salaries etc...yum
+Jess Hann LOL. S'all good. Some things are cheaper in Thailand - other things are cheaper in Thailand. Either place has a much lower cost of living than where I came from. :)
You're a lucky man. Same as Spain. I love the market & it's so much better than spending your money in a supermarket. Enjoyed that!
You can't beat fresh fish , and the prizes are reasonable Wow!
I love your videos! The prices are unbelievable! I cannot wait to return!
As a foodie, that was a great video !! Any country I visit, the first place I go is the local market, and talk to the genuine people who work there, whether London,Paris,Amsterdam, always good people who want to help !
+Alan Wood Glad you enjoyed it, and I agree!

Jean Hougron About all I can handle is the durian pancakes. Straight up durian not so much. ;)
Good video Ned. Can you take off the fish eye on the go pro please?
Shawn w. I might switch over to 1080P and cut it down to medium then just process the RAW at a lower bitrate. The 720P only has Super Wide and Normal but gives you a smaller RAW size file than 1080P.
Ok . Thinks Ned. Keep up the good work.
Love going to market early i like fresh fish and whole tuna are cheep and so are prawns trying to find out where i need to go to buy a forequater off beef and iff its possable to buy lamb anywhere
Still living the dream ? Very brave of you to shop here! I remember the fish market in Toledo city
In 05 exchange was 58.75 to 1 . Its so bad now its scares me... maybe ill have to pay real money there next time

Joey G I haven't yet, but I will.
your a great couple, love your videos and one day i hope to be there for good, i been in the markets of cebu and its the same stuff. seems like fish and meats gone up in price, but still cheaper than USA
Jimmy Bananas Lots of people are saying the prices have gone up. Especially rice!
good video looks like the markets i saw in palawan. The tuna would be good whole so you know its not contaminated and cut at home parts can be eaten raw sashimi style or with rice.
Jason Ta I am pretty sure at this point that most of the public markets in the Philippines all look the same. :)
Looks like a very nice market. Well stocked w fruits and veggies and all the fav types of meats. Seems markets are proportienal to the size of their town/surrounding area; Bay2 is prob smaller. Very nice fresh fish, sad to say the price is more expensive than Manila market.
Hi I love All your Videos, do you know if they have Scooter Rental there? or its Better to ship it from Cebu ?
PUBLIC MARKET in the Philippines always fascinates with fresh vegetables, sea foods meats that never get frozens for market. the prices are very reasonable and cheap.
Quote Michell : "Bad day to be a fish" ahhahahah yup very bad day.
Thanks for a super video .. Real cool to see
Tom Køster Thanks, Tom.
I think you were getting the foriener prices because you were with Michelle. I learned right away to let her go shop by herself. Love your videos.
240 p kg for tuna is very cheap , that's like 3 bucks a pound
I miss all those fresh fish and all the sea foods
Do you guys see pork tenderloin (not center loin) sold by you? It's the best part of the pig except BACON which is another thing I wonder how available it is in PH. Glenn McGee We will do a comparison video at some point on any kano/skin/nose taxes.
do they clean an cut the fish/seafood for you ??
Seafood is expensive everywhere, but they've got to be cheaper in the seafood market than in supermarket groceries. Closer to wholesale price than retail.

I wonder which came first the chocolate rice and sugar for breakfast or Coco pops. Something somewhere got lost in translation. Great video!
When I was very young 3-4 I'd used to go with my mom and dad to those kind of markets. Now I just can't stand it haha
And those prices aren't too bad for the amount you're getting.
where can you get the squid for less money?
Dried fish- The first time my wife made it in California the window was open and the kids next door yelled out ,"What is that smell" lmao.
Thanks guys :)

tornos (pandaca pigmea?) the grey substance.... kinilaw na malasugueeee
Do the wild street dogs roam the market , like in Mexico?
I enjoyed that ....can't wait too buy a whole pig and put down a hangi. Reminds me of the markets in Melbourne without the dogs....etc...
Atis is a custard apple.... I missed mag mercada.
about 18 years ago when my wife and I move to Texas, she and some friends where frying "Bullod" or dried fish in the backyard... It smelled so bad that the neighbors called the police... lol!!!
bigzach9 That has happened on more than a few occasions from what I have heard.
Where do you guys eat breakfast? What do you eat? Michell is so skinny, does she eat enough? I don't want her to pass out.
Linda Lalisan She is small but fierce. She has actually gained weight since we started living together.
So what did you get?
Michael Firestone Bunch of veggies for pinakbet. Michell cooked them up last night. Yummy!
no sign on prices on some places he
Buy the black marlin it is good! Dried fish may be an acquired taste but I don't plan on acquiring it because I am never eating any. Cook outside only! lol
Cory R Dried fish is rough. Very, very rough. I tried to eat it but couldn't get past the stench.
Philippine Dreams atis is good, its a little tart and has some seeds in it but you just eat it as is....no peeling required
Lucas Musser I have to get more adventurous in my fruit intake. Thanks, Lucas.
Philippine Dreams You should the fruit here is great! The only one I know of people having an issue with is durian but I think that one is fantastic as well......lol I'm not that picky
is defacement a crime in other countries?
cundallthepieman Not sure, but I bet the pig didn't appreciate it much.
Atis is actually custard apple.

Bruce
MrTwobears Wet market takes a bit getting used to. :)
I am used to it we have always had livestock . Just curious is there much price difference between the stores and the market.
Bruce
This may be fresh, but they dont refrigerate so it spoils very fast. How much for the Salmon-ella
Actually, the salad fixings I get at Daro market last at least four days in the fridge - even the lettuce doesn't wilt/get slimy.
The veggies look nice. When I see them leaving meat out, sometimes in direct sunlight, it makes me cringe.
price is per orange not per kilo
Nice video - This way of shoping will drive me crazy but it is nice to look at when time is not a lack of time. I even have difficult to spend time in our Swedish market places, nowdays thanks to internet it is easy to shop... without moving yourselt to the store. Lazyness is what make us work harder - - - hi hi hi
Tommy Karlsson LOL - yeah, I miss Amazon and Ebay!

V peace.
I go visit my gf in the province I go every 3 month she always buy fish and meat at the market. I am afraid to eat do you eat from the markets. thanks

Assault on the senses for first timers. Easy to become a vegetarian,di ba?
Idahovandal4ever Yeah, lots of things being chopped up. You have to stand clear of it or you get hit with bits of flying flesh. :(
I'm sure people were wondering; what's the Kano doing at the wet market, lol.
Was the fish not on ice? Hot country, fish not on ice = food poisoning surely?
+AWidgetIHaveNot They have a big bucket underneath with ice, where majority of fishes for sale are...They just get it out when the displayed ones were bought..
Is it possible to buy a whole pig....or even better a pig that we can butcher ourselves...its common for my family to hunt wild pigs. We also raise pigs...etc to home kill too feed our families. Home made sausage's etc salaries etc...yum
While by the tuna did Michelle say "bad day to be a fish"? Not that was hilarious lol
Smells like Olongapo on a hot night at the bars. Lol ! Thats the kind of pungent smell I like.
I can't go in to a wet market..... the smell is way to much for me

Michelle looked like she was ready to drop after she had breakfast..... my girl put her resignation in for the 20th.
Mark Kelley She was tired as was I. I took a nice nap when we got home after the market.
The pretty ones looked like muscles
peter hann I am a big fan of bivalves. :)
HOW CAN PEOPLE SAY ITS CHEAPER IN THE PHIL THAN THAILAND ? LAST WEEK I PAID 150 EQUIVALENT TO PESOS FOR PORK CHOPS
Why are you yelling?
Sorry buddy I am not yelling just did not realise I left my caps lock on until after I pressed Post, Sorry again
+Jess Hann LOL. S'all good. Some things are cheaper in Thailand - other things are cheaper in Thailand. Either place has a much lower cost of living than where I came from. :)
I wouldn't buy any meat there. Too unsanitary. I'm quite sure there's lots of other places that are cleaner.
If you cook it well done or deep fried all the bacteria should perish! Vinegar and boiling oil will kill them too.
