Lead is pretty inert. Don’t suck on it, or put it in a place it’ll be worn away or aerosolized somehow, you will be fine. You could probably find a way to stabilize it to increase its resistance to weathering with magic, or special coatings for the outside of your bricks or inner parts of materials.

Odd that steel wasn't listed in the video. Still lead should not be a problem. If the DM rules silver as being too dense you know have something to do with your silver coins. Lead is only a problem when it enters the body. Lead based paint was bad because it was on the outside of the walls and was worn down into a breathable dust. Lead lining inside the walls, like insulation, will only be a problem when the wall is opened up. Even then; if not exposed to the elements to wear it down will be magnitudes less poisonous than paint...

The living tissue rule always raises a couple of questions for me. First, can an adventurer in the Material Plane punch something on the Ethereal Plane? Second, do undead count? In other words, can someone on the Ethereal move through a zombie? A vampire? A lich?

    • @juliogouvea9447
      @juliogouvea9447 3 года назад +20

Unless you are a high-level monk (when your fists are considered magic weapons), it seems to me it is impossible to hit an ethereal creature with your knuckles or even regular weapons. Only magic weapons, or maybe special metal weapons (lead, gold, adamantine, obdurium???), certain spells (force damage) might harm ethereal creatures while you are at the Prime. And provided that you can see the ethereal creature to direct your attack or spell (truesight works). Most of PCs might not be able to see it. That's why ghosts and other ethereal creatures can be very dangerous to low-level characters. I do not think that this rule should prevent ethereal creatures from passing through undead since they are animated by necromantic magic (not really alive) and feed on the corpse. souls or lifeforce of their living victims. But who really knows?

If it does not prevent living tissue from interacting with you, then it doesn't matter that the dragon is gold. It's living tissue, thus it would hit the adventurers regardless.

On realism and verisimilitude, as well as D&D lore, they don't seem to have a grip. That being said, it is important to inform your players of any changes you make before the game. I don't think 5 feet of fog cloud should block all vision entirely, but someone who picked that spell might be awfully disappointed if you spring the change on him after he's already spent the spell slot and made it one of his known spells. I think this makes more sense, but 5e decided to simplify the spell by having it work like a brick wall or the darkness spell. The problem is that I've seen discussion boards with DMs who kept assumming it worked like 3e, even though it doesn't. It would be a nasty surprise to learn that the spell you just casted won't stop you from taking an opportunity attack, or doesn't stop line of sight from the beholder's eye rays. So, yeah, kindly remember that newer players might not assume the game plays like an edition they've never seen before. :)

However, on the ethereal plane, it is very difficult (or maybe impossible) to find any food or water, besides those created by magical means (if it works), food/water brought with you, or foraging for an ethereal creature dinner (and maybe dying on the process). So staying too long on the ethereal can be very dangerous, especially if you do not know how to get back to the Prime.

    Crazy character idea:
A Derro character, meaning a member of a grey skinned, dwarf-like race that is known to be absolutelly batshit crazy, that has lengthy conversations with thin air, so nobody believes their claim to be totally sane.
During the Story, it is revealed, that they are, in fact, totally sane, but cursed to be permanently able to see into the ethereal plane. When they seemed absent minded and said something about "flying fish, dancing around a certain character" they were meaning it, when they talked to the air, they had conversations with different denizens of the ethereal plane, one of which is their friend since early childhood.
This should be accompanied by this character to being able to, for example, see through simple illusions or spot invisible passageways or characters/enemies every now and then. Maybe they suddenly talk to the invisible rogue, like they were visible, possibly blowing their disguise, because they just saw them and forgot that the rogue was supposed to "not be there".
Although this would probably be hard to play and needs a lot of working with the DM, I think this could be an interesting character and could lead to some funny situations, if done right.

I stuck a crazy tall tower in the middle with the goddesses on top and the rivers that flow from the center over the edge of this land create the mist of the Ethereal. Silver at 10.40
Makes sense. I always describe silvered weapons as tearing away at the very fabric ov creation ov ghosts and other ethereal beings.
And it seems that due to it being so close to the density ov lead that perhaps it gets caught up in the "flesh" ov ghosts as it passes thru that it tears some away with it on the weapons way out?

magic missile CAN hit creatures on the ethereal (or any other plane) though. You simply need to be able to see them, and be within range. Magic missile specifically says "if you can see them and theyre in range, you automatically hit them unless theyre fully enclosed"

I mean to hit a creature on the ethereal with say Eldritch Blast would first require you to target that creature. Next also the range of the spell would probably have to be changed to "sight" rather than a integer. Remember that technically each plane is an infinite distance from each other, this is true with the border ethereal as well.
A wall from a wall of force can be seen to be doing at least one of two things. One it is intruding in some way into the border ethereal. Or creature from the border ethereal can interact with it but not the other way around. Now if you have a force AoE go off I can understand possibly there being some kind of effect on a creature on the ethereal. I am not sure if they would be damaged though or just displaced.

"See invisibility" lets you see invisible things AND lets you see into the ethereal plane. "Misty step" let's you teleport to a space you can see, that is also within 30 feet from you ("vortex warp" will allow you to teleport your friends)... Since the material and the ethereal overlap at the boarder ethereal, one SHOULD be able to combine these two low level spells to travel to the ethereal plane.
Your solid body automatically becomes ethereal when teleported to the ethereal plane. That part is just d&d lore.
So, of you all didn't want to wait until you had 7th lvl spells before going to the ghost realm... There ya go!

This would have been incredibly useful about a year ago when I Homebrewed a Monster that traps people in their dreams and feeds on their psychic energy as they sleep slowly killing them throughout the night.
Basically, the creature exists in the Ethereal Plane near certain areas of the Material Plane and when a creature falls asleep in that area they trap the dreamers in a pleasant dream that could be described as Paradise by the individual character keeping creatures separate if multiple are in the area (Say an Adventuring Party). During the night(s) the creature has people trapped in their dreams they slowly consume the creature's mind taking a point of Intelligence for every couple of hours asleep in that area. The only way to escape is to find a flaw in the dream, focus on that and nothing else, and escape through that flaw into the realm of sleep and dreams where you can find and slay the creature returning yourself and others trapped to their own bodies in the Material Plane.

While there was a lot of information here Im not sure i go answers to the following.
Can you interact with other beings on the ethereal plane?
Do you need food, water, sleep etc?
    Can you die?
Anything there that can kill you?
Some material suggests the Astral Plane is the place of dreams so im a little confused.
But the real question all of these are designed to help me resolve Is....
Is the Ethereal Plane a good place for a village of people to be stuck in unstuck from time (like a 1000 years type deal)? or should i look to one of the other planes?

I suppose since the Kalashtar come from Eberron, things may work differently there, but I thought based on what’s said in the 5E books about the Kalashtar that there is a Plane of Dreams that people go to when they’re dreaming. Unless the Plane of Dreams is somehow part of the Ethereal Plane.

    • @doubleg281

@@jacopobertolotti5025 ya, but that means your dreams are physical locations. That complicates things when you have spells like gate and demiplane where you could potentially bring your dream creations to the material plane. The astral plane already has mechanics that dieing in the plane dosen't kill you just like in dreams. Dreams are a much better outer plane than an inner plane

It seems to me that, if you would rule that silver would also be considered something that is solid to those in the ethereal realm, then the cheapest way to attack a creature there would be to use the same silvered weapons you would use on a were-creature.

I think the intent with wall of force is that the etherial thing is spell specific, not inherently because its made of force, isn't it? Or maybe some lore compromises are made for the sake of balance.

    • @doubleg281

I've always interpreted wall of force to be infinity dense, while only being 1/4 inch thick. This lets it bleed into the border ethereal.

Some of the imagery you used makes me think. Perhaps whatever qualifies as the "northern lights" on your world could be an area where you can accidentally slip into the ethereal plane. Granted, only someone or something that could fly high enough could do so, which leaves the regular, earthbound people to speculate on what it is. Like the ancient Norse thinking that the aurora borealis is the Bifrost bridge to Aesgard. But for those that could reach it, it's a way in.

It is worth noting you are literally on another plane, thus spells only reach you if they reach other planes.
    I quote:
"While on the Ethereal Plane, you can only affect and be affected by other creatures on that plane. Creatures that aren't on the Ethereal Plane can't perceive you and can't interact with you, unless a special ability or magic has given them the ability to do so.
You ignore all objects and effects that aren't on the Ethereal Plane, allowing you to move through objects you perceive on the plan you originated from."
So you can stand on the material plane, casting dispel magic, or put down a hundred glyps, or run circles around a person with Antimagic field on yourself, but all you'll accomplish is to shove the ethereal creature around by running into it. So stick those glyphs in the border ethereal, or you just make your home needlessly dangerous to yourself.
However, if you get your Etherealness or Blink or such dispelled by someone else who is also on the ethereal plane, then you go right back to the material plane.
Also, keep in mind that solid objects don't outright kill you. You take force damage equal to twice the number of feet you are moved... so most commoners would die from being moved just a few feet.
So you may find yourself suddenly under a lot of solid bedrock and then emerge on the material plane as "chunky salsa" or "red mist" following your sudden extreme acceleration and deceleration upon your return to the material plane.
Exceptions apply, but magic needs to be cast on the same plane (as of 5th edition) to do anything to the creature on the ethereal plane. This was not the case in earlier editions... but the universe has been restructured a few times since then. :)
Edit: I love planar lore and get into it with my characters or as a DM as soon as I can. The hype for the Deep Ethereal lore is real. I love playing with demiplanes! Be it with my characters, or with my villains and NPC's as I DM. Keep it up MrRhexx. This series is your best yet! :)

like there almost no spell that let you able to hit a creature in the eathrial you can see them with true sight but cant interact with them at all except if a spell can target a specific creature with a range of sight. which I barely can recall any.

Since the dream realm disappears instantly, do you also cease to be?

Are these outcomes dependant and their severity based on if you are a powerful psionic or not?

So if the Ravenloft setting is set in the Ethereal Plane, does that mean you cant enter the Ethereal Plane because that would be leaving Barovia? And would that also mean you cannot connect to other planes of existence at all? Like the inner and outer planes?
And this was something I was just confused on, can Barovia be in ANY Material Planes, Ethereal Plane? Like people from Greyhawk and Faerun all end up in Barovia, or leave from Barovia to another Material Plane.

If they cannot move through a living creature, then it should be able to punch or strangle someone. I would add on the wrinkle that an ethereal creature has zero mass, so though they could strike, they have no weight to actually do damage. For grip, a lack of mass isn't enough, so bites, strangles, etc won't really be stopped by this. That would just have to be added in as "has zero strength", possibly trying to tie in that since the movement is via thought, not muscle, that muscle does not then pertain to such acts, and the movement to actually cause constriction is disavowed by being ethereal. So it would not be so much that "it is hard" or "it is very solid matter" that causes the blocking of ethereal creatures by lead et al, but that there is no possible way to move through a space occupied by it. So if an ethereal alligator tried to bite you, you would maybe have the cloth crimped for no apparent reason (if it were considered semi-alive because it was natural fabrics), but the skin would not be moved in the least, and therefore no bite could rupture or split the skin to cause damage. If an ethereal boa tried to constrict you, then your cloth would be hard to remove if affected, but when you breathe in, the boa could not prevent your ribs from expanding, not because the force you breathe in is higher than their ability to hold still, but because the area their coils can exist changes.
I would posit that the problem for force missiles and the like is that you would be shooting through ethereal stuff ALL THE TIME, so if it "strikes one creature or surface", then it would never work. The force would have to be directed to that surface to count, and in the material plane, that is constrained to the congealed matter on the prime material, but in the ethereal, a surface of anything, or even just the "air" itself, exists as a potential thing, not a reality, and that reality is formed from will alone, both the will of the observer AND the will of the thing that is "solid", so therefore you have to be cognizant of the object AS an object for the force to actually connect in the ethereal plane. If you can see into the ethereal, therefore, you can decide that your target is any region in the ether that you can decide "it" is. The smoky substance of "nothing" in the ether can just be the target you wish. Maybe that is how things like fireball can explode: you decide the spot that will be "the first solid surface" on the ethereal. However, to use force damage against an ethereal creature you would have to discern where it is first and aim at that thing, and thereby reify it in the spell target as being able to be affected.

That's super interesting, you mentioned that when someone dies in dnd their souls get sorted into going with their gods, he'll or disappear in a wall of shame? But what happens if someone decides to go to the deep ethereal plane to escape the afterlife? Is that even possible?
