  • G-SHOCK 1983
The name G-Shock comes from a watch that could withstand a shock caused by gravity (title)
G-Shock started in 1981 with a team known as
Project ‘Team Tough’ lead by CASIO engineer Kikuo Ibe
The team had a three criteria goal called the triple 10
    10mtr drop
    10 atmospheres of water pressure
and have a 10yr battery life
200 prototypes where tested before the G-Shock was ready to be sold to the public
The DW-5000 was the first G-Shock to be released in 1983 using the module 240 but it was rated to 200m
HOLD ON… HOLD ON, Wait… is this going to be all about the history of G-Shocks, because this has already been covered by Watch Geek…. He’s got a few videos that are brilliantly presented showing all you need to know about the early G’s, and of course the links are found below in the description…
So unless you can provide something different WhatUP69,
I suggest you stop right there hey!
OK… Lets start again… Here is MY DW-5000
But unfortunately wasn’t a hit because of its chunky case that was just not pretty at the time
In 1984 G-Shock released the DW-5200 using the same module as the DW-5000 which looked almost identical
but this time they used an advert which was televised in North America showing a hockey playing using the DW-5200
as a hockey puck taking a slap shot
from this advert the impact was in demand with adventure enthusiasts, police, firefighters and Ambulance crews
wanting a watch that’s tough for their activities or occupation
On the west coast of the United States the DW-5200 hit upon the skateboarders making it become a popular watch that was seen to be very cool
Four years later from the first release of the DW-5000,
    the G-SHOCK DW-5600 was introduced in 1987
The DW-5600 series is described as the final square model to feature a full metal case and screw-back.
The DW-5600 is the longest selling shock resistant model.
Its shock-resistant structure is due to four features exclusive to G-SHOCK watches:
    1. Hollow Structure
Inspired by the inside of a ball, the inner module is supported minimally inside the case which allows the module to "float". This combined with shock-resistant material such as urethane allows the device to withstand impact when dropped.
    2. Shock-Resistant Case
The watch owes much of its shock resistance to its 3D design and protruding case. This, combined with the structure of the bezel and its hardy mineral glass protector provide the buttons and glass with an extra shield.
    3. Cushioning material
The interior of the watch is protected by a cushioning material to prevent operational errors and damage should the watch be subjected to a fall.
    4. Curved band shape
The secret to the toughness of the G-SHOCK DW-5600 lays in the curved shape of its band. Its unique structure ensures that the vulnerable back of the watch will not touch the floor when dropped.
But it wasn’t till the DW-5900 that was released in 1990 that really pushed the G-Shock brand forward
With the Tri-Graph display made it a huge hit in the youth culture
It was such a hit, that it made an impact also in its homeland back in Japan
because Japanese kids just couldn’t get enough of the American youth culture at that time

Great video, I love your G-Shock content especially. Excellent outro, well said! When I was 11, my friend's dad had your same DW5000, and one long night he fainted and fell face first onto concrete, instinctively shielding himself with his G-Shock. His face was busted up, but the G-Shock was unharmed (that's all that matters), but that's when the legend began for me. According to g-central, "the DW-5000C retailed for about $150 when it was first released in 1983." $150 in 1983 = $400 (and rising...) in 2022, which was all the justification I needed to buy the new GW-5000U, for its relative bargain even at full retail.

The DW5600 is my favorite. To me that's when Casio got the look of the background right. Now having said that the current GWM5610U looks awesome. But the DW5600 looks awesome. I liked it so much I had to buy the G5600UE which is a solar non mb6 watch. It's basically a GWM5610U without mb6 and the same strap the DW5600E comes with.

I remember when the first gshocks came out. You’re right they were thought of as kind of ugly, also even for the early 80s they were also very simple when compared to other models in the casio catalog, and this was in the heyday of complicated digital watches with multiple melody alarms etc. I only remember 1 kid in my class at school having a gshock. I had a casio calculator watch and goddamnit i wish i was more shrewd as a 13 year old as these are so cool. Great video 👍👍👍👍👍

Cheers buddy... If you're gunning for a vintage G-Shock, look at the DW-5200c which is known as The Hero. I wear this the most over all the other vintage G-Shocks... maybe it's the stealth look of the face and is the design that hasn't been remade as an anniversary edition, I like owing the original 1983 DW-5000c but for me the brick pattern isn't my favourite, but as I'm a G-Nut, I had to have the original. The 240 module has a sharper LCD over the later 691 as used on the later DW-5600c, plus it's more basic but still has what you need.
Some available on the secondary market, but just be aware that some have the bezel screws missing or worse broken, and to drill them out is an absolute pain.
HaPpY New Year buddy, and cheers for your feedback :)

I also have a gw-m5610-1ber in new era...
Happy New Year to my friend and I wish you all the best !!!! 👍😎

@@branislavradojevic339 Now oddly the DW-5300 isn't a screw back and that was released later in the 90's so was rather odd in my opinion, with regards to the series model numbers, but in general the early ones are screw back. You have the 'Speed' and I have both versions, with the 691 and 901 and the only difference is that the 901 has a sunburst finish on the back case, while the 691 has it polished. Not sure what the difference in modules are, even the filament bulb looks the same. Maybe it's low temp LCD on the 901?? Have you seen the WW-5100c and what they sell for, that's if you find one for sale? I missed one a few months ago which sold for only £400... I was just watching it wondering how much it would sell for, and in the morning I was very shocked, as these do fetch around £2000, and this one was in really great condition, now you need to be a hardcore collector for that money. I actually don't like the design of it, so would be something to experience and for a little investment for a later flip. The DW-5200c is still my favourite :)
The 5610 has been a fantastic success, and I have had one... now have you seen my video on the GLX-5600, now this has some lovely extras hidden inside :) but it's not vintage and is the same measurements as the 5610.
I forgot about the square DW-5500 and that used also the original 240 module... now there are some newer versions, and the one I like has the red buttons still, but is tough solar, but done in a discrete way. Now sure if I've actually seen the original being sold, they must be rarer than the DW-5000c.
I feel the original 1983 DW-5000c hasn't got a success story behind it, and when released it was a flop, and the DW-5200c slap shot saved the day.... but it wasn't till later the DW-5900c which took G-Shock back to Japan and made it a huge success. It's kind of sad the DW-5000c has nothing to celebrate, other than it was the first G-Shock released, and maybe that's why I don't wear it much????

    • @branislavradojevic339
      @branislavradojevic339 3 года назад

@@WatchUP69MrRangeman In the world of G-Shock fans, there is a discussion about how sunbrust (cyrcle) is a cheap treatment than polish, so the first "cheaper" in the production itself began (with the creation of the 901 model). I don't believe there are any differences in the modules themselves, and I'm not sure about the endurance at low temperatures. I sincerely hope that h my country will appear on the stock exchange DW-5100c, because the prices on ebay are not realistic. I like the design of the first model, but I also like the design of the DW-5200c. I would equally like to get both. I love your clips and video reviews, so I’ve watched everything you’ve done so far. Your video about the GLX-5600 model certainly delighted me !!! The GTX-5600 is not an older generation but will certainly have a higher collector's value than the 5610. IMO I don't like the new versions of the 5500 at all because they are too big, while the old version with the original 240 module is almost impossible to find at the normal price on the stock exchange :( The 5500 (240 vintage) is also very desirable to me, maybe more than the 5100c. If I had a 5100c, I would only wear it around the living room :))) and keep it.

    • @WatchUP69MrRangeman
      @WatchUP69MrRangeman  3 года назад +1

@@branislavradojevic339 Polishing is more time consuming, as if corners are cut it'll look crap... think the sunburst was to save some pennies. As for the difference between the 691 and 901 module I can't tell, and I have them both, but with the 240 module the digits just stand more darker and vivid. The WW-5100c is bonkers in money, and I was watching one a few months ago, and it was in cracking condition. I was watching just out of interest if it'll make a few thousand, but sold in the early hours at just over £400! I was kicking myself, as I would've taken a few bids around that price. I however don't really like it so much, so would've been bought to experience, review then later flip.
Out of all my early vintage G-Shocks, the DW-5200c gets the most wrist time, oddly the DW-5000c does get neglected, and I feel the brick pattern places me off??? Now I won't flip it, as I'm such a G-Shock nut, that I like to have the very first G-Shock that was released back in 1983, so it's more like art and the ownership than anything.
I've got the steel bezel and bracelet kit on its way to me for my GLX-5600, as I want to have it as the GMW-B5000 equivalent... I do like the B5000, but after owning it twice, it's just a G-Shock that you either bite the scratches and just enjoy it, or you're to concerned about marking it, as this all decreases the value quickly.
If I had the WW-5100c I think it'll be mainly worn upon a deep bed of goose feathers LML :-P

This G-7800 has the best module, with a lot of customization, even the display contrast and the font can be adjusted. But not another g-shock was released with that module. No solar or atomic, but the functions and customization is one of the best. I still have it in a decent condition, and today I have about 28 casio g-shock watches. Best thing about the old Casio's is that they can be tuned to perfection, using a timegrapher or quartz calibration equipment, you can get them to within and nat's whisker of perfect including variations in temperature when you wear it (by warming up the crystal with your finger). Casio are now beginning to remove that adjustment even on their expensive watches, which is a shame, yes, they may have multiband six but they can be anything up to 3 seconds a day out whereas the old Casio's can be as good as a few seconds out a year. Now that's sexy.

Aren't the DW5700s module 901 supposed to take a CR2016 battery? Towards end of video where you open up the 5700, it looks like a 691 module not 901 as per the caseback. That might explain some of the tight fitting? See Korea module 901 in link below, note battery strap with "Korea" and "2016" on it.

In the days of smart phones, smart watches, and 80” inch tv’s - Its amazing to think that guys today are still buying the same cheap plastic watches their fathers probably bought, and both thought it was a cool watch at the time.

Sometimes simplicity is all that you need to rely upon... look how complicated the new tech can be, not even automatic self service checkouts are 100% flawless, and call upon an organic human being LML :-P

      Haha. I’m 51 and a dad. Yes, I still wear G-Shocks. The first one I bought was in 83 or 84, when I was 13 or 14.

I would definitely get it pressure tested at that age but it's in good condition for a 40 year old digital watch 👍
