Dave Mason has been respectfully called a musical “gunslinger” for a reason; having worked with some of the biggest names in music, his trademark guitar licks and musical touches are all over some classic hits. He recorded an album with Mama Cass, played rhythm guitar on “All Along the Watchtower” with Jimi Hendrix, was a founding member of Traffic, recorded with Paul McCartney and The Rolling Stones, was part of Fleetwood Mac for a spell, as well as a guitar designer and a Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Inductee…. Yep, that’s Dave Mason.
Written when he was only 19, Dave Mason is likely best known for “Feelin’ Alright.” The Traffic song is one of the most beloved rock anthems and one of the most covered since its release in 1968. The song has become one of the most powerful and enduring tracks in all of rock and roll history, living on in dozens of films and TV commercials as well as with versions performed by artists as diverse as Joe Cocker, Three Dog Night, Grand Funk Railroad, ELO, Coldplay, The 5th Dimension, Maceo Parker, Widespread Panic and so many more.
After leaving Traffic, the band he and Steve Winwood co-founded, Mason went on to record his own solo project, “Alone Together,” in 1970. The album featured the hits “Only You Know and I Know” and “Look at You, Look at Me.” Together with Jim Capaldi, Leon Russell, Rita Coolidge, Bonnie Bramlett and others, Mason created some of the most memorable music of a generation.
Stay tuned for more from Dave Mason!

This guy has never received the recognition that he deserves. Great musician, great lyricist and a great guitarist. I have been listening to his music since the mid 70s. Although his looks have changed (Lol) he just sounds better and better to me. One of my top 5 of all time.
The original was a song by young musicians. This is by a seasoned veteran. Both great. Bravo.
A living legacy. Dave is incredible. My first concert in 1977.
Dave did a full studio version of this "Dear Mr. Fantasy" with Joe Bonamassa in Nov 2023. And it was amazing!
Memories memories memories...I remember when this song came out...I couldn’t get enough of it..thanks for the song Dave..and all of your work..
Sound's better then the original Dave. Lord, this song takes me back @ (65 yrs old in Nov) to the day's when I wasn't watching the years grow. Great Job Dave & Band. 😎✌️
Is your birthday Nov 26th?
Sounds great makes my ears smile
what a wonderful rendition of an old favorite! Thanks Dave for making me feel alright.
vocals as strong as ever dave. awesome
Sheer genius and talent always shines through the ages.
Great song and artist.
Wonderful! Love the riffs and different chords.
A Legend !!
Still incredible! I learned my very first rock licks from Dave's records a long time ago.
See you tonight Dave!
Always loved all your music.
Blown me away.Oh Lord magic!!!!
The Best!
Excellent
Spectacular
DMF the Masterpiece
Nice.
AB one BMF!
Interesting. Played in a minor key. The original was D major, I believe.
So col. The minor key makes it more bluesy ❤️❤️❤️
He did a studio version of this with Joe Bonamassa. It was amazing!
The first thing in the description says: Traffic song written by: Jim Capaldi. Two paragraphs later it says: Written when he was only 19, Dave Mason is likely best known for “Feelin’ Alright.” Makes it seem like he wrote it. According to Wikipedia: Jim Capaldi contributed the lyrics, while Steve Winwood and Chris Wood composed the music. In any case, a great song.
I think you might've misunderstood what was written. The author was describing how most people know of Dave Mason (because of "Feelin' Alright"). The part about it being written when he was only 19 is just an added detail that probably caused the confusion.
@@m.delaney3006 Yeah I think you're right, now that I look at it again.
DMF is always described as being written by Jim, Chris and Steve. Is the headline here a revelation or a mistake?
Can anyone tell me the name of the drummer? Please help!!!!
Just wondering what would Steve Winwood say..🎸🎸🎸🎸
Dave has been playing this for years.
Capaldi wrote the song, and Dave performs it beautifully

Windwood, was never fully committed to Traffic. Although he's a brilliant artist, he always had one foot in & one foot walking away to another project. Like jumping into "Blind Faith" while Traffic was still doing very well. Blind Faith didn't last long & then he comes back with what I called Traffic #2, with a different lineup of artist.
Steve's Best move was going Solo. As for what Windwood would think about how Dave dose a Traffic Tune, should never be a factor. As a founding member of the original Traffic, Dave Mason has more then earn the right to perform music any way he wants, especially since it always comes out sounding great.
@@hannealbrechtsen461 Making a good point on this link share. Turning Slow Hand "Eric Clapton" loose on yet another Rocking Version of Dear Mr Fantasy. Keep Rockin Hanne 😎✌️👍
Have seen Dave Mason several times....I understand the man has the right to do his song the way he wants too but as a life long Mason fan i sure dont like how he changed how he does this song now...Its alot different ....I prefer the old version so much better ...On his live Sirus album, he plays the old way version of this song and as the song ends and everyone is cheering he laughs and says....YOU REMEMBER !!!
...Well yes, i do, and this version is not what i remember...Not understanding trying to fix what wasnt broken....
I'd advise you to avoid Steely Dan in concert. The hack job on the "Reelin' in the years" guitar solo is criminal
I've always been a fan of Dave's & also remember when the original Traffic version was released. Dear Mr. Fantasy is & always will be a Timeless Song in my music collection. But I can understand Dave's Purpose of turning it into a more Rocking Version. He's a brilliant artist & doing the same song throughout the years the same way can get a little boring " wouldn't you agree " ¿ Lighting a 🔥 Fire to it & rocking it like this, well, I think Dave & Company was having some enjoyment, some fun. Kinda like having sex ! I mean whom would like to have sex, with the same partner for 50+ yrs the exact same way every time ? Not me that's for sure.
Better to Enjoy the Song multiple ways, including Rockin It Out as Dave & Company did on this version. The only fought on this version is " It wasn't long enough " !
Dave didn't sing, write or play guitar on this Winwood/Capaldi song. But I like his interpretation.
First, we must all agree that this is an ageless, great tune. Second, if it is a great tune, then no matter who does it and in what genre or incarnation, it holds up and stands the test of time. Whether one rendition is better than another is just a matter of opinion. As is this humble opinion (mine).
I think it's wonderfully done, a great gathering of first rate musicians!
Love DM. Just love him. But there's no background singers here but there is in the audio in the video. Really, the additive editing is not needed. And I'll bite my tongue now:-)
make it S N A P P Y, I was listening to his playing a lead from 1970. and young men, it just flowed as he writes only hooky, melodic songs- and I was thinking he was a pioneer in clean uninterrupted lead guitar- Peter Frampton also lets his guitar "sing".I take Mason over Winwood anytime- NOTICE- Winwood seems to do a performance where he can lead on Eric Clapton, watch the guys aging that do not! Dave Mason and drum roll Johnny Rivers, who a\outsmarted everyone by no burden that "bands have" Nope JR would call up- Is Jim Gordon or Hal Blain in today? hahahah- "a band for a day- his black angels doing back up- all wonderful. AND wickedly smart.
Love Dave Mason, but Steve Winwood is much better on this song!
We just Disagree 😀
The original was great. But I find the Harder Rockin Blue's in this version more to my liking. Biggest problem with Windwood as for Traffic, he always had one foot in & the other foot stepping to another project. Windwood, although a great artist, was never fully committed to the band.
Odd arrangement to say the least and that's being polite
and putting it mildly.
