  • Hi Folks,
This week I made a quick tutorial for the newer machinist out there on how to set up you mill vise on your mill. I also show how to set up dual vises and talk about how they are handy.
    Enjoy!

My vise are 2 cheap imports.
Surface ground bases flat, which also made rails same height.
Surface ground both fixed jaw and movable jaws to match
Ground jaw inserts of both vises to match.
Took piece square ground it Mounted it to Mill table.
Clamp both vises to the square stck. Then milled key way slots in bases of vises.
Surface ground solid 4 wide by 1 inch thick bar to us as an alignment tool .
I am sure there was some areas i should check but they seem to align nicely.

Surface ground / milled "keys " to mount in base to fit smug in the vise and Mill table slots. That i use as a "Master" Saves time.
The "Slave" vise keys are match to Master vise keys also.

I have exactly that same stone that I inherited from my grandfather, those must have been popular with the old codgers.

Hi John, yes that is interesting info. Thanks. Can we still get those stones today?

@@DragonflyEngineering I could not find anything like them with a quick look on Amazon and Ebay as far as new stones but I don't really know where to look. I never looked for one as I have a couple of old ones that were really nasty looking until I ran them through my ultrasonic cleaner and they came out like new.

I'm surprised you can clamp the indicator to the tool holder without preventing the spindle from turning, and the indicator doesn't rotate the tool. I guess the force on that indicator ball is so small compared to the inertia of the tool holder, spindle, and motor, it doesn't rotate the tool?

that is correct, the lever on the end if the indicator has little force on it compared to the mass and stiction of the spindle. You can also get a dovetail mount rod and check it into a drill chuck or similar for a more rigid setup, but it takes a little longer. Thanks for watching!
