@@danl.4743 It's not that they "need it", 90% of the companies that sponsor YT channels don't "need it", but more sales is just that, more sales. And companies spend a LOT of money every year on maintaining and/or improving their image with consumers, which is why YT sponsorships are rampant. So they don't need to do it, at all, but it wouldn't hurt and may well get them another 15-20 orders out of ToT's roughly million subs.. And may get a few people even talking about the company, like we are right now, which is free advertising.
Oh I bought a vice off eBay, £50, 9" when I was really just starting out. What that thing needed was something next to it for scale, like a house... Being 6ft 9" I can lift it, about the height of the back of a van, once. And it makes the performance difference when in the van, down hill it seems quicker, breaks caused a large bang if applied hard although the van struggles to stop a few football fields further than it used to, hills also seem to be considerably longer. I worked out that the reason for the vans breaking issues was that the vice's mass was affecting space time. The point of this rant, don't buy things on eBay with out knowing the actual size of it. In this case 9" meant a vice that was about 2 and a half foot long, and able to cause cold fusion if dropped.
If that is £50 including free international shipping I'd hazard the guess that my local scrap yard pays enough for cast iron that one could make a latte or two a week hurling these to the junk yard...
@@andersjjensen it's either a Jones and Shipman or a Bridgeport vice. I have seen more if them for sale (and it always makes me laugh that there is never anything to reference size) but they go for a minimum £150 so I got "lucky" with this purchase. Thankfully I have an engine crane if I ever want to use it. :-)
I can beat that. I bought a bank of three six inch vices on eBay. I naively assumed that they were simply bolted to a plate but it turned out that they were manufactured as a trio of vices with a common base. We had to use a fork-lift to get it into the boot of my old Jag and I was relieved to get home without needing new springs. At my end, I had to use an engine hoist to get the gang of vices out of the boot and into the workshop. It should fit on my mill, but would make the table ridiculously heavy. I've been advised to cut the thing up and make it into three 6" vices - but that seems a shame. I simply cleaned it up and put it in a corner of the workshop until I can find a use for it. I wondered why no-one else bid on a set of three machine vices for £50. Now I understand...

Just a quick one. When checking for perpendicularity, rather than using a ball bearing or fitting the "bumper" to the base, just turn the main rod over so that the ball end is down, as that is what it's there for.
@@frederf3227 Those measurements were 1/10000ths, not 1/1000ths. And his measurements were wrong anyway, you measure a vice with a reference block clamped in it, not open, as the test diagrams showed.
I purchased the four inch quite a few years ago and it was brand new right out of the box; I had to rebuild it. It was a Kurt Anglock type but the bearings had to be replaced, the main shaft had to be made anew and the half ball which holds the rear sled down to the bed had to be remade. First thing was to set the mill to surface grind and grind the vise parallel to the mill's table. The new half ball was hand ground from a very nice ball bearing. I had to saw the bearing in half with diamond saws then surface with diamond plates. Then the two mating surfaces had to be remated and finally, I ended up with an accurate and reliable vise with repeatability. I also saw the grain structure of my vise and it was very much open. Vise was made in USA Far East (China).
My Wife and I watch your videos often. They are very clever and entertaining. We Hope all will be and we'll see more content soon. Best Wishes, Jim and Tracy

Tony, you are the first person I learned the stuff about machining and all the related stuff. I am an academic science person but somehow metals like welding and machining are my new achievements all due to Tony and other guys like you. Bro I cant thank you enough.
Not entirely, when you're machining to .001" (about .0254mm exactly) this vice could give some very slight errors, but if you're machining to .0001 (.00254mm) then it would be rubbish. For a milling machine like TOT has, he isn't likely to be chasing tenths or microns, but if you have an actual real CNC mill and you're making parts as a business, this thing is very likely to be garbage and isn't nearly good enough for the work, if you need high precision that is.
@Jeremy Raab rare for manual but not unheard of for certain parts when it comes to CNC, its more common in very technical parts that can't be ground or lapped afterwards
Yes, ironically mine found out about the phase converter i purchased today...similar situation. You spent how much just to make other tools run????? I had purchased it at Thanksgiving with their super promotion. Unfortunately the I got it on sale line doesn't work for men.

Fyi the ball on the top of your adjusting rod on your surface gauge is actually what you were supposed to use at squareness check you just flip your rof around do the ball is in the groove of the base and you press that up against your square block. Which creates your pivot point.

@@yzmoto80 I went ahead and emailed Kurt and mentioned not only ToT, but the subscriber number as well as a brief summary of the video.. recommended they sponsor ToT with a free vise or two as it's a very small investment for their company/books, but the potential gains of 1m-subs is fairly massive :D
Let's see if they go for it
I see what you did there...
Does Kurt really need it? It is basically the default choice of a vise for anybody who wants to best mid price vise before the price jump to $3000 Orange type vises.

Some careful work with a grinder on that surface plate would bring all these measurements into spec.

Don't feel bad, we used to have an aircraft carrier land yacht Cadillac whose bow wave would affect the weather in Canada...

@Bruce Cole I know, I was gonna make a post... Kinda weird being worried about someone I've never met nor conversed with, but these days are strange.
Hey Tony I hope your family is dealing with your loss as well as possible. One love man. Take care.
Tony, can you use your surface grinder to "fix" the errors the vice has?
I was wondering the same thing. Or even take the jaw plates off and surface mill the high spots so the whole thing is flat relative to his mill?
My first thought after seeing the blue sharpie writing was "Oh boy, time for the surface grinder!"
I wanted to check the comments for this before adding my own.
I was wondering if he could have "fixed" it with the mill or surface grinder as well.
It doesn't help the jaw lift problem.
My Wife and I watch your videos often. They are very clever and entertaining. We Hope all will be and we'll see more content soon.
