Thanks Tony. For a lot of people, often 5-10 thou tolerance is actually way beyond what they need (not want, need) for 99% of surfaces

Not entirely, when you're machining to .001" (about .0254mm exactly) this vice could give some very slight errors, but if you're machining to .0001 (.00254mm) then it would be rubbish. For a milling machine like TOT has, he isn't likely to be chasing tenths or microns, but if you have an actual real CNC mill and you're making parts as a business, this thing is very likely to be garbage and isn't nearly good enough for the work, if you need high precision that is.
@Jeremy Raab rare for manual but not unheard of for certain parts when it comes to CNC, its more common in very technical parts that can't be ground or lapped afterwards

I doubt your surface plate has a .001" hole. Better practice is to leave your indicator stand stationary and move the workpiece under the indicator. The distance between the indicator tip and the point on the surface plate directly below doesn't change.
I heard on the grapevine that tragedy had struck your family. If this is so, I am so very sorry and hope you are all getting through it ok. You have all of our support and if there is anything we can do...
That’s what I do with my cnc router. I use a surfacing bit to mill my sacrificial board flat relative to the tram on my cnc. Seems like the same principle should apply.
You would want to grind or stone it into spec. The surface is too hard to mill at least for his machine. And yes he could and should stone or lap it in to tighter tolerance if he wants better results for his money. These can be decent vises if you are ok with doing a little bit of work to improve them.
@@dexterm2003 And also: that depth of cut is just too small for a normal mill. All cutters have a nose-radius, and so you would just have quite a blunt cut.
