I had a couple of terrible bouts with kidney stones in 2009. Then I had another couple in 2017. It wasn’t until much later I realized something. In the interim period I had moved to a house that had a lemon tree that produced big, beautiful, fantastic lemons. I squeezed them in water, on fish, anything I could think of. For 8 years, no kidney stones. After leaving that house, I became prone to them again. Most pain I have ever felt in my life. I started regularly drinking water with lemon again. Been stone free ever since. Okay, could be coincidence. But I can tell you, I’m not waiting for someone to do a randomized, double blind, placebo controlled, crossover study to prove it works. My real life results are good enough for me.

Thanks For the info. I too have a very tough problem with kidney stones and looking for something to give a hand with them. I have found many real studies that show positive benefits from lemon juice. But beware Vitamin C is said to promote kidney stones where luckily lemons also have citric acid that helps even more to stop kidney stones. I am using lemon juice for other reasons so it will be a good test!

@ronlearn You need to first know what type of stone you make. Lemon juice is a urinary alkalinizer and can help deter calcium oxalate and uric acid stones but cause other types to grow.

    • @elaineharley5501

Dehydration is the #1 cause of stones. You need to keep the urine diluted of stone-causing substances and flush the crystals that could become stones. Lemon juice is a urinary alkalinizer so it can help deter calcium oxalate and uric acid stones...but it can cause other types to grow.
Apart from getting a stone analyzed you can do a 24-hour urine test to see what's causing your stones. (You may have passed others without knowing.)

I wash lemons then slice them in half, place them in zip freezer bags.
They seem to be juicier after freezing them. I just take out what I need and put them in a bag in the fridge.
Every morning I juice lemon with hot water and have first thing with a straw. Plus a c vinegar followed by a pint of water.
Gives my lazy bowel a kick start. Also eat a-lot of fish so I squeeze lemon on .
Very healthy and seems to suit me.

I make a hot drink of wedge of lemon, a cinnamon stick and sometimes a dribble of honey in a thermos with hot water. Makes me drink more water and if you like cinnamon it’s really good! Plus the health benefits of the 4 ingredients is a positive, as minor as they might be. 😊

I drink one to two mugs of hot water with a slice of lemon in it before having my first cup of coffee so that the coffee doesn’t dehydrate me too much. The lemon gives the semblance of a “drink” rather than just water and being hot (just out of the Kerrigan machine) makes me sip rather than gulp. So healthy choices, but not magic!

I read that it is really important to wash the lemon before adding a slice to a drink. It’s to remove whatever might be on it from growing, shipping etc. (also, did the person at the bar who cut them wash hands first?)Now I can’t order it that way - I only do it if I’ve washed the lemon myself. Probably over careful, but I just can’t do it.

My urologists have always advocated lemon water or anything with citric acid as a kidney stone preventative. Also check out the University of Chicago's kidney stone site. Citric acid can't dissolve oxalate kidney stones but it can dissolve the uric aid ones. Avoiding sugar is also very helpful to prevent stones, as is consuming calcium at each meal. It's very hard to restrict oxalate because it's pretty much in all plant foods. Certainly restrict the top 20.

Calcium oxalate stones are helped by reducing milk and calcium. My uncle and his daughter had Calcium oxalate stones. Stopped drinking so much milk..both improved. I have uric acid stones, tested, and gout, urologists shrug about dissolving the latent stones in the renal pelvis.
