No one... NO ONE... can deliver the "Antarctica? Oh please!" line like she can. I've seen/heard a few others (including the legendary Elaine Paige) and they can't come close. Beth f'ing sold that line!!!! I LOVE YOU BETH!
i saw beth in december in mamma mia SHE WAS SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO AMAZING the best donna ive ever seen in my life!
I believe I can watch Beth Leavel sing... ANYTHING! She gives life to her characters. Here, I couldn't take my eyes off of her! Hilarious and gritty...is that even possible? lol
I am completely smitten with Ms Leavel's stagecraft, consummate domination of stage and scene and that glorious voice; this is truly inspiring theatre, which she seems to be enjoying as much as her fellow actors and their audience - thank you!
My school's doing it this spring, and I can already tell we won't be able to top this performance. Absolutely magnificent, Beth Leavel is divine in this role. :)
Top three things i love about this video: 1. PLUMBLLLE. 2. her hand gestures (throughout the video but specifically starting at 2:38 3. The final "along." Damn, Beth has pipes!
I was in a touring show in 2006 and 2007. I remember having a day off in NY. I bought tickets in the 7th row center for this show and never regretted it! I was mesmerized and laughing for 2 straight hours. At the end of this song, my heart was leaping out of my chest. Absolutely incredible experience.
I think it's kinda funny that there's any comparison between a broadway show and high school show. There are two basic reasons why a high school production can't compare to broadway: 1. The talent pool for a broadway musical is infinitely larger than that of a high schools and majority of the people in the broadway "pool" have been refining their trade for much longer than any high school student. Mind you there are some incredibly talented kids who are at a broadway standard but very few
That's usually true, but not always. I just went to my friend's production at the Latin School of Chicago, and it was easily professional-quality. The set had two levels, a hidden room for the orchestra, excellent costumes, and phenomenal actors. The only drawback was that the lack of microphones sometimes made it difficult to hear the actors when they sung solos, particularly when they were standing on the second level of the stage. Francis W. Parker also did a very strong version of Cabaret.
As we stumble along 'cross life's crowded dance floors. As we push and we shove we live and we learn. And when we finally leave the bar, And we see that morning star, we pull our boot straps up and homeward turn. Then we stumble away through dawns blinding sunbeams. Barely knowing right from right nor left from wrong. But as long as we can hear that little blue bird There'll be a song as we stumble along. As we stumble, bumble, fumble, plumble, As we stumble along.
OMG! Where?!?!? Where is this playing?!?!? I would fly half way across the world to get to see this again. It's the best time I've ever had at the theater.
QueenBoadicea There was an American Theater Wing panel discussion with 4 broadway actresses (Alice Ripley, Bebe Neuwirth, Beth Leavel and Laura Benanti) back in 2009. They talk about a lot of stuff and Bebe talks about seeing Beth in Drowsy and at first thinking, “Ooh, I wonder if...” but then realizing that Beth’s performance was brilliant and there was nothing else to find in that character. It was a really cool/sweet moment.
@Splurge24 Dude, I agree...except I'm doing a kids production, (highschool age) of this show...and the actress actually pulls that line off brilliantly! I was surprised!
they did a marvelous job and no one can top the... though I do have to say that I saw a better Aldolfo in a highschool show... No one , though ca top the amazing Mrs. Leavel....
do werk girl BREATH SUPPORT at the end AMAHHZING! did she win the tony? i know sutton didnt for this show.. either one of them deserved it BRILLIANT PERFORMANCE
kelceesings you want to talk about breath support? You should hear Beth sing The Lady’s Improving in The Prom. She sings without taking a breath even longer than here. It’s amazing!
Okay I am Doing Actors Nightmare Right Now With My Theater Company and i got Sarah and i just auditioned for this and the chaperone reminds me of sarah so i hope i get her!!! :D
i agree with you most of the time, but some schools who specalise in drama and music do amazing shows. They may not be better than something as good as this, but they can be just as good, if not better than comunity theater :) George Abbot school (surry in england) did Jesus Chris Super Star two years ago and it ended up being from page news it was so good :)
Check out Beth singing "The Lady's Improving" from THE PROM. This is from the final performance, but I'm pretty sure she held it longer at other performances: ruclips.net/video/DR4dv4McoVQ/видео.html
Our school went to see this at derby dinner today and I might say the actors where fantastic they did a better job than the people on this video, but then again I guess considering audio differences I guess that's part the reason so bravo :D
Not saying they suck. I'm saying they're kids that can't touch Broadway caliber talent. Many high school PRODUCTIONS are near professional... the acting/talent? Usually not. And even if they have all the talent in the world- they still come off as kids playing adult roles most the time.
@pudgeuncle I said I could "see" her as the drowsy chaperone. I have no opinion on her abilities as a singer since I've never heard her sing. But she'd be wickedly funny, I'm sure.
Its numbers like these that make me want to be a woman in the theater. We men folk just don't seem to get THESE kind of numbers. Especially us Baritones! Not to say that the roles I've had aren't WONDERFUL I just dont seem to have songs like THIS!
Wow, while I agree that it's silly to go to Broadway videos and comment with "my school did it better", but it's also incredibly rude to say "not it didn't, it sucked". Theatre is subjective, there's nothing wrong with preferring a community or school production and there's nothing to be gained from making people involved in school and community theatre out to be inferior. Why can't we just unite ourselves through our love of musical theatre rather than separate ourselves over who's better?
"Inspiration, really dear that's not my forte"
"Yes but maybe..."
"As we stumble alongggg"
The writing is perfect
There is not a moment . . . not a single moment . . . where she's not completely hilarious in this video. I can't stop watching it.
You said it! 🙃 The awards she won for this were well deserved. 😍
No one... NO ONE... can deliver the "Antarctica? Oh please!" line like she can. I've seen/heard a few others (including the legendary Elaine Paige) and they can't come close. Beth f'ing sold that line!!!! I LOVE YOU BETH!
This video may as well be called: how to win a Tony.
For reals.
I am SO glad this time capsule exists.
What an actress!! This is how to deliver a song!! I'm in total awe xx
I’m obsessed with her arm movements.
It’s like she’s doing Judy Garland’s impression of Liza Minnelli imitating Judy Garland. Instant Tony win.
IT's that and everything else we ever knew about Broadway in one tiny massive video and I love it so much.
yes spot on. ha
God, I can't get over how brilliant this/she is. Her hands are hypnotic.
i saw beth in december in mamma mia
SHE WAS SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO AMAZING
the best donna ive ever seen in my life!

I've met Beth several times. shes so hilarious and down to earth!
And THAT is how you win a Tony Award!!!!
This woman...is AMAZING! She had me rolling the entire time!
I met her yesterday and sang for her! she is so wonderful.
Whoever filmed this did a service to humanity ❤
I'm in awe 😭 this is the version that makes sense! The one that knows the story!! *Stands and claps in empty appartment*
11 high schoolers thought their high school production was better
They probably saw "Titanic" more than twice, too.
"Is schoolers even a word?
But they knew nothing of the real world, yet.
one of the best shows, and best vocals from the show
My school's doing it this spring, and I can already tell we won't be able to top this performance. Absolutely magnificent, Beth Leavel is divine in this role. :)

I like the part where she's drunk.
she is utter perfection.
I was in a touring show in 2006 and 2007. I remember having a day off in NY. I bought tickets in the 7th row center for this show and never regretted it! This is truly and completely phenomenal, in every possible sense of the word! Beth Leavel is a goddess! :D
Her hand gestures are godly.
thanks for uploading this! I was at the same performance and I embarrassed myself with clapping after this performance.
You got that right! SHE IS BRILLIANT!

Excellent!!!!!
She did the Liza Minnelli pose at the end!! 😂
Matthew Alexander She sure did. I said she did Judy Garland’s impression of Liza Minnelli’s Judy Garland impression.
I feel like she would make a truly amazing Mrs Meers.
Liv T Beth did play Mrs. Meers in a production at the MUNY several years back. I’m sure she was awesome. (When isn’t she???)
A rousing anthem. A-rousing anthem. Arousing anthem.
PLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLUMBLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
Chills
OMG! Where?!?!? Where is this playing?!?!? I would fly half way across the world to get to see this again. It's the best time I've ever had at the theater.
Why did this sensational woman never play Norma Desmond!! Xxx
my favorite number :D
i know, and 5th row centre. I am in love
Who’s here in 2021 🔥
genious
Beth Leavel really upstaged Sutton Foster like THAT.
I can see Bebe Neuwirth singing this role. She'd be fantastic!

@thatduffgirl "Celebrate the moments of your lives" was the General Foods International Coffee jingle. Phoebe Snow sang it.
There is more professionalism and wit in this one number than in the entire show of "Wicked."
1:39 starts the song...as we stumble along ;] ♥
(i'm excited and NERVOUS to try out for my schools musical. we're doing this!!!!)
Oh ! I soooo agree with you!
they did a marvelous job and no one can top the... though I do have to say that I saw a better Aldolfo in a highschool show... No one , though ca top the amazing Mrs. Leavel....
what an inspiration! i was drowsy for my school’s musical, but man she’s so MAGNIFICENT ❤️ (the vid of me is on my youtube channel)
I am stupefied. And roused. And a little drowsy. I guess Beth really is a triple threat. :)
hehe, I remember rehearsal for this scene
Director: Man, you have a dialogue
Morgan(chaperone): -still frozen- and do it quick, it hurts
I love elainge paige to bits, but im sorry she just couldn't do what beth did xxx
I’m not sure anyone could do what Beth did. It really is a singular performance.
do werk girl BREATH SUPPORT at the end AMAHHZING! did she win the tony? i know sutton didnt for this show.. either one of them deserved it BRILLIANT PERFORMANCE
kelceesings you want to talk about breath support? You should hear Beth sing The Lady’s Improving in The Prom. She sings without taking a breath even longer than here. It’s amazing!
I got to see her live on stage in Mamma Mia
Okay I am Doing Actors Nightmare Right Now With My Theater Company and i got Sarah and i just auditioned for this and the chaperone reminds me of sarah so i hope i get her!!! :D
How to be liza minelli
I would love her to play this role.
PLUMBLE!!!!!!

Did she really hold one note for 18 sec??
