- No creature can live without this magic mineral -- and no living organism can produce it on its own. Amoebas, algae or humans -- all life-forms are completely at the mercy of this simple chemical compound. In all bodies of water on earth, there is salt in abundance, and animals and humans have always been able to extract the valuable crystals from water -- directly through their organs or with the aid of evaporation in salt lagoons.
*It shattered my heart just to feed their family they do this much toil... really they are super heroes for me.*
I love the music
God bless all those laborers working so hard to harvest holy Salt we take for granted.
Yeah...... bless them with a gods blessing. .
no salt from any of these countries makes it into the states, we have our own salt mines where we produce many many times the amount of salt that these places do.
Religion is a mental illness. =)
Maybe it's taken for granted because there's nothing, absolutely nothing holy about sodium chloride. It's a fucking compound found all over the universe! Batshit loons gotta get their proselytizing mumbojumbo crap in perfectly normal natural events.
The great Repugnikan war on science and truth is gaining momentum, dumbing down America to the point of using the Babble as a textbook like Chuck Norris Texass Jeezus science book burner bastard.
This is the most informative documentary.
Respect for these hard working people, most of people today take salt for granted, as told in this documentary at one time it was like gold and money.
We should be thankful to God for providing salt in abundance.
My favorite scene in this documentary was of two very old ladies in the bus, so innocent.
All the people who have seen this documentary are at least better than people who waste their time in watching movie gossip. 🍟🍗
You can say such lovely things and the condemn your fellow man just because their tastes are different than yours.... have a thought of how you speak of others...
Religion is a mental illness. =)
I just love this. The music and the sights are so beautiful.
Absolutely incredible! I have never seen the mostly low-tech salt production process as conducted in these five areas. Nice to know that these workers still exist, though their's is not an easy life, by any means. I salute their fortitude and dedication. They must derive considerable satisfaction from their work or they wouldn't continue doing it. Many thanks to Secrets of Nature for producing this jewel. Great narration!
+DadsLloyd glad you enjoyed. don't forget to subscribe.
there is another element most of us don't take into consideration,
that is how dehydrated these men will be for days after and during, muscle cramps, headaches, and terrible thirst
@@philobetto5106 sooo much work. A capitalist would use machines to transport and dig.
Fascinating! I've never seen a documentary on salt before, I really enjoyed it.
Utterly spellbinding dedication to the cultivation of history, resource distribution & grounded passionate documentary making. I was in no manner prepared for the heart rending musical performance at 36:08. It is so beautiful yet tragic to know that hundreds of thousands of miners have worked & died for mankind to have survived, & to literally see their carved faces slowly diminish as their last remnant is taken by the mineral they were intertwined to is not only heartbreaking, but a haunting foreshadowing of our own counterparts.
What more can I say? Simply a must watch perspective on how none of us are in no way truly free to exact our destiny; for without Sodium Chloride, we are just as those statues are. Husks depleting in accordance with the chaos of nature, calling for its balance once more. Nasty, Brutish, & short lived. I shall never take salt for granted again.
Good documentary. The pan flute music was beautifully haunting. The entire film seemed sad in a way perhaps because those who work the salt fields have hard lives.
One of my favourite documentaries for some reason, maybe because it's so different from my life?
Civilization rides on the back of domesticated animals. Yet we hardly ever show them any real care and appreciation. We own them, yet we think they should be ours to do whatever we want with in anyway we want. I hope anyone who abuses them comes back several times as one of them.
Very interesting video. Makes one appreciate the ease with which we get our salt.
Awesome. watched on a whim and found this so interesting - that bit at the end with the llamas? Holy hell! 42 day trip each way...? makes you think how all the things in your life you complain about aren't that bad most of the time.. Thanks folks! Subbed for more :D
I feel you... With labor like that... Many would appreciate what they worked for.... Many take for granted what they buy.
Well said..
You should watch the ones about little kids walking to school through jungles and mountains.. By themselves. Six hour trips made twice a week for weekly school. Dang some of us have it too easy.
Salt? llamas? what? 🤣
Great program! Everyone should be required to watch this program! It's that Great!
SBF
Really enjoyed it. Very educational.

The saltiest place on earth is the DNC after Trump's election.
Or literally any XBox live party
And now it’s Mar A Lago, or wherever loser Donald is at any moment.
Wow - those guys running with the salt on their heads what balance! (22 mins). Makes any ladies' finishing school walking with books on her head look well, rather feminine after seeing them. Great documentary. Thanks.
Precious hard working people. Old traditional ways. They are the true meaning of pure salt collectors. May god keep gracing them with abundance of gifts so well deserved.
best comment award to you Angela.
I once read a book on salt as a joke. Was fascinating and a huge surprise
i once tasted ( SEA-SALT ) & can't tell the difference between the salt mined here in midwest USA in under ground mine in Kansas
@@chadsimmons6347 I can, the pink Tibetan salt of the Dead is my favorite 😍. Great big grains, and pink.
@@phyllisdevries5734 If i can, i will order some Tibetan-salt and make some margaritas, that may take my mind off...all this crazy stuff (thank-you)
Sounds like a documentary done by the Moody Blues! Very Cool!
Thank you, this was an absolutely fascinating documentary!
Wonderful documentary. Thank you so much!
Haha that was amaaazing. Didn't expect that but SoN delivers again. One of best
very very enjoyable, never take salt for granted again
When you realize just how incredibly BLAND your food is without it, it's easy to see why we've been chasing the stuff for so long.
@@t_k_blitz4837 absolutely!
I cannot cook without it. nor do I want to eat anything without it!
I never add salt to my cooking
Wow. The way these guys produce salt is so romantic and beautiful.
Not if it’s the only way you have to exist, I’m certain they’d disagree.
Think about this: that's the same Portuguese salt preferred by George Washington for preserving his fish.
No offense but that doesn’t impact or mean one thing or make any diff. To me ... I don’t
Care who in the past among the so called elite or ppl in power may have had things or used things , as being any selling point or relevant to my life. I appreciate wisdom and understanding and what can be learned form those in the past , but some particular figure or well known person doing whatever in such a way just doesn’t make me care or have any wow factor involved lol. Again. no offense. I get what you’re saying.
Where you’re coming form ,
Etc .. I just think in general , there’s a common theme among ppl where they concern themselves too much with what the rich , famous , so called elite do or say and keep up with it way too much ,
Trying to mimic every trend and mirror their lives after whatever lifestyle and behaviors or trends that these other ppl happen to embody or promote and at the end of it all , there’s Alwyss this mentality among ppl to wanna do as whichever celebrity or whatever.. not at all saying that about Your comment or you personally lol. It just got me thinking bc it’s of no significance to me .. unless it’s something the lord calls us to do , be or focus on and spend our effort doing or put our hearts on , I don’t care what the world does .. other than , as I said , there’s value in wisdom and of course also , having respect for those who are our elders , to pay attention to their wisdom .. but outside of that , it’s no significance to me what Washington or anyone else so falsely glorified within history books may have done .. seems like an awful expense and effort to obtain something that didn’t readily come from areas indigenous to tne area he resided .. Perhaps ppl didn’t care about whether things were sourced from other countries and regions in that time, as trade was often beneficial among ppl internationally. Now , However , it’s not well received , not should be living in excess as these typical self serving ppl in positions of power or authority or among the over paid and attention seeking celebrities, as they all promote horrible examples while benefiting off status and money and the ppl who just idolize them and coddle their every move.
No offense but this is a informational, and enjoyable documentary. Seeing these people continue the work that many generations have worked.
I love salt it makes food good.
@@breAnnasmama take a chill pill!

+Ancientpeople thank you. hope you enjoy all the films!
Fascinating film!! Amazing what we take for granted these days!! The amount of back breaking work and old techniques i'm astounded by. Next time i buy salt i'll think about all the hard work that has gone into it for hardly any money at all.
Thanks for the share..good one for RUclips.
The word salary comes from the Latin Salarium, that is the salt amount payed to soldiers in the Roman army. I'm from Portugal, the salt I use is called "Flor the sal" that is salt flower, it is the purest and richest in minerals salt you can get, it is the top layer that forms when water starts to dry, nothing is added and it's a bit more humid than normal salt, it's excellent for cold or uncooked foods, and you use it in smaller quantities. it can also be used in grilled meat or fish, in this case you should sprinkle it after grilling The brand I use is from the south, in the Algarve province.
I directly react pure sodium metal with pure chlorine gas for my salt. YOUR impure dirt salt can SUCK IT
" that is the salt amount payed to soldiers in the Roman army. "- is actually incorrect. This is a misinterpretation of a note made by Pliny the Elder which is inaccurate, and has become perpetuated online. I discovered this online recently, on WIkipedia actually, who have sources to back up this info, if you don't wish to take my word for it. _ see the following link
"The word salary comes from the Latin word for salt. The reason for this is unknown; a persistent modern claim that the Roman Legions were sometimes paid in salt is baseless.[23][24][25]"- en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salt#History 3rd paragraph under history.
Don't perpetuate the misinformation! :)
Thank you! I will have to get some.
@@h4xo7 it is a understood bit of misinformation. Thanks for the correction.

Don’t cry. You’re losing precious salt in those tears...
Best video I have found on salt production. The workers are amazing.
Those men carrying 170 lbs of salt baskets on their heads all day are as solid as anvils for real
We all realize and sympathize with the fact that the extremely limited nose flute is a beloved Andes tradition, but, I have learned not to watch Andes oriented videos because of those very flutes. Please, join myself and other music lovers in tuning down almost all back ground mood music that, since the end of silent movies, have brought about the sadly mistaken idea that we humans are too dense to grasp a subject unless it is over whelmed with the authors personal slant on the subject. In the science of music, SILENCE, is regarded as an integral fact of musical composition. But Nose flutes!!! they single handedly have turned me off in regard to any romantic thoughts of the most interesting, the most romantic parts of mother earth. Please!!! Just let us watch and wonder and enjoy by the power of our own imaginations. Is that too much? I love these particular documentaries and have subscribed, but I have a personal beef about the above. As for salt, one of the most influential history altering subject of human existence. Mind blowing!!
best doc ive ever watched ...thanks!
Too many adverts!

The people at he beginning of the video supply us with salts yet they are poor? Shouldn't their village should be like the West and they should be millionaire?
Very interesting thanks
Sad to see this...the people who work like this they are not living- merely existing
Sure makes me appreciate the blessing of being born in the USA
Yes it is heartbreaking with today's technology we could automate all jobs & free up people from wage-slavery to fulfill their passions, pursuits and interests. There's an organization [that no one wants to know about] who is pushing for this to happen. They have a Documentary called *The Choice is Ours* if anyone wants to shock me & go and watch it! lol Yeah right. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Awesome documentary 👍🏾🇯🇲
Prayers for these hard working people. I hope their government will help them upgrade their way of harvesting salt. sadly, despite the labor intensive process they earn very little out of it
