Good audit, my personal opinion of the petrol garage manager is mixed, he did a pretty thorough job of enquiring about the coins with the bank and post office, but let himself down, first by lying and contradicting himself, secondly calling the police which was a civil and not criminal despute, and thirdly, out of frustration and anger, decided to punish Julian by banning him from his petrol garage, which I thought was childish and harsh. As for the 2 police constables who turned up on scene; they did ok and were at least professional and polite, but I got a sense by their so called good words of advice, that they were there more to patronise Julian on how he should spend the coins in the future; which I thought was inappropriate and not really any of their business.
I’m sure with many many more petrol stations and garages around I highly doubt being banned by the garage would worry him. Good job by the cops however as it should only have been a civil matter as it’s not a criminal one. A good educational type of video that shops should be more aware of the law. Shops that do not take £50 notes clearly advertise that they do not take them, perhaps that’s what they will do with the coins, then they would be within their rights.
@@richardkinghorn4729 I agree, as if banning Julian from one petrol station is gonna seriously inconvenience him in the future. The garage manager was butthurt, and out of childish spite decided to teach him a lesson because there was nothing else he could do. When you think about it, how hard would it be for all managers of all petrol stations in the UK to simply put notices on all their pumps stating all legal tender and other forms of payments they are happy to accept. The banks have seriously complicated things by making it difficult for business owners and the public to deposit uncirculated/commerative legal tender coins into their accounts, point blank refusing to accept them. The Bank of England is not exactly helping either, and there should be a law passed into legislation that all banks and petrol stations, at the very minimum must accept legal tender coinage made by Royal Mint which is approved by Her Majesty the Queen. If uncirculated/commerative coins were not meant to be used and spent in the traditional way all other circulated coins are, then there shouldn't be a face value of any amount printed on them and a law stating that commerative coins are only to be used for collection and collector's purposes only.
@@libertyfighter76 spot on. The trouble is that businesses like things easy, they could of course make people pay prior to putting fuel in a car and say set the pump to only the amount pre-paid. That way it does not become a debt does it. That would of course cause a lot of problems if people going in to pre-pay and not actually be sat at a pump and unable to say what pump you fill up from, that really would confuse them. However the other way is to actually employ people to fill your car up for you but that if course takes away a large chunk of profit from them paying out wages.

There is an interesting note on the Royal Mint's website which would indicate that if offering commemorative coins as a payment method, change need not be given : Both parties are free to agree to accept any form of payment whether legal tender or otherwise according to their wishes. To comply with the very strict rules governing an actual legal tender it is necessary, for example, to offer the exact amount due because no change can be demanded. The Royal Mint creates commemorative and bullion coin collections to celebrate key moments or individuals, and these are often treasured for their collectable and aesthetic value or purchased for investment opportunities. However, these commemorative and bullion coins will not officially enter general circulation, which means that banks and businesses are not required to accept them.

If the manager of the petrol station didn't tell you that you can't come back then doesn't that mean you can come back and do it again? The police could have been lying.
Yes they are always doing that. They don't have to power because they are not agents of the landowner. He should write to Esso and do a SAR and if there is no written record of this "ban" then he can be sure either the police or the manager are making it up.
Also, on what grounds are you banned if there is no problem and you are clearly a very good customer they want to keep if you buy £300 every time? What does Esso's marketing department think of big-spending customers being banned from them but not their competitors? And the shareholders - why is esso not maximising profits on their behalf?
Absolutely love this, it would be great to see someone offer these coins to a bailiff and I wonder if they would have to take them or the debt could be forgiven😮
Don't understand why? I just purchased £315 worth of fuel off him and paid in the best quality money. And I was fully co-oparative other than paying with digital bankers money. I dont see the problem... 🤭

They refuse to take them.
@@MrAndrewFarrow not all banks.
@@John.Spandli name me one and I’ll open an account there.
@@MrAndrewFarrow the one on this channel that accepted them is a good start.
@@John.Spandli no. They turn them down.
Well done to them coppers. Good interaction. This is how we like to see our police.
@@richardkinghorn4729 I was living in Cyprus 30 odd years ago, petrol station was open 24/7, put notes into machine, gives x amount of fuel, simple.
I understand, today is different, in N. Ireland we have unmanned petrol stations, that take cards, put your pin number in, then it gives you the fuel. Even has the same option for notes. Basically, pay up before filling up..
@@stuartbrown8259 that’s one way as I said. Too many of these petrol stations/garages though want you to walk in and pay after you have filled up, as that say, then go in and pay for it. If that’s what they want then fine but to do as some are doing and not putting a notice in the pump of not accepting these coins or £50 notes then tough if you choose to,pay that way. They are legal tender.
If paper £20 notes are about to cease to be legal tender, surely the Chief Cashier at the Bank of England still has to honour his promise signed on the document even after that point?
You'll still be able to pay them into a bank after the date - just like with old paper £10 notes
i found some old notes when clearing mu parents house out - bank took them no bother
I've been paying bank notes from the 1980s into my bank account no problems.

Again the constables weren't happy that you knew the law and they couldn't help but copsplain at the end there.
Great content mate!!!!
I think the coppers found that very amusing 😄

Can’t believe you went to the bank with him! 😀 Nice one.
The police were fantastic, well done gentlemen.
I love watching your videos ❤️.
The only way the garage can refuse the payment is to have a notice on the pumps and inside the outlet.
They can refuse payment at anytime. But it's their loss.
As it says in the video. The fuel is now his. They can refuse his offer of legal tender and that's the end.
@@John.Spandli But he will still owe the debt. Its up to him to pay with an acceptable alternative.

Hi Julian another great film well done.. just wondering wether you can actually redeem the coins for the face value anywhere if you wanted to ??
Some banks and post offices.
Post office seems to be the most reliable place. But it's discretion
And you can keep the change 🤣I nearly spat my brew out
If I owned a petrol station I would sell these coins to the customers to pay with! Slight mark up on the coins and fuel still gets payed for. More money for the owner.
Looking very smooth today 👍

Thanks Brett, another great video and interaction. The police constables seemed fair but you could tell They didn't quite get it...34:38 "it's about the views". I find that generally the ones who don't understand why you are doing this are the same people that would take an experimental jab just because they were told it was "safe". Keep doing what you're doing. All the best
The 'ornery' garage owner should be eternally grateful that it got to keep the charge. 😉 😂
Its not a legal requirement to give any change.
Fair play to the police officers on this one. That's how every matter should be handled.
"£95 is quite alot... i paid less than that" lmfao....
There is an interesting note on the Royal Mint's website which would indicate that if offering commemorative coins as a payment method, change need not be given :
Both parties are free to agree to accept any form of payment whether legal tender or otherwise according to their wishes.
Correct.
Super audit,ah I really enjoyed this 1,big up bret. 👍
