Mir from MBLAQ made a video where he said that he actually made quite a lot of money during his activities in the group. And MBLAQ were not top stars by no means, they were kinda mid-/lower high tier at the peak of their career. So it depends on the company and your contract but also on how many events and concerts you get to do. Reason so many medium-popular groups go on seemingly useless tours is because if they sell out the concerts, they get some good money out of it. So I think it's not ONLY the biggest groups but those certainly fall under the category of "rich" or "super rich" (TVXQ, BTS, SNSD, Big Bang etc). Sadly, album sales don’t generate much profit. Most groups can only generate income by holding concerts, being a guest on shows, or having sponsorships.
Y'know... being a fan of K-pop for a decade, it's crazy to see the different paths each group/person takes from start to finish. From those who train for half their life and get famous or those that don't, you wonder what happens to them. A lot go into acting or start a business, and it's just... different. Five years ago we didn't have shows like Produce 101 where existing or on-the-brink stars get to have another go at their craft. RUclips wasn't as big of an outlet for individuals to explore other topics outside of TV appearances. Same goes for the rise of V-App and what it's done for groups' fame and interaction with fans who like off-of stage content. It's weird to see artists like G.O on RUclips managing his own stuff, like, I never thought I would be "subscribed" to him back in 2009... You see groups like Shinhwa and SuJu who are still doing their thing, and then even comparing them to Western artists that have been making music for DECADES or come in and out of the scene (NKOTB, Jesse McCartney), you just think about where the newbies and long-term artists will be down the line. But, what I think I want to say is that I'm really happy that artists such as yourself can speak up about this side of the music scene, and all the crap you must have gone through just to get a name for yourself (with probably an image you may not have agreed with all the time). You're really an inspiration to keep going or to dabble in different fields to better yourself and keep going with what you like to do. Thank you for becoming a content creator on RUclips and really tackling topics in an understandable and informative way. Wishing you the best always!
@stephen kroll um I don't think that's a thing.. and even if it was I don't think it's common, companies put the idols on so many bans to prevent idols from dating, cuz they believe they'll lose fans if they're seen hanging out with potential lovers
I know right? It is really REALLY sad, and there is a LOT of idols who are UNDERAGE. It is modern slavery, and sometimes when i think about this...I feel ashamed of supporting such a demanding and exploitative industry.
@Mia Colucci you clearly don't even know what slavery is. unless their parents are forcing them to be trainees, all the kids that go to these companies go because they want to
@Mia Colucci oh my God, slavery is when you are FORCED to do labour. every one of these idols decided to go to auditions or follow ups at a company, sign those contacts (that tbh themselves or a parent/adult/legal representative should read before) and train for years without leaving, which they could've if they wanted. it's a known fact that the trainee life is tough, debuted idols have expressed disdain over that period of their careers. theres plenty of ex trainees that talk about their experiences. not everyone has it that bad tho. obviously these kids want to be there because they have a passion for performing and they want to chance to make it big, hopefully big enough to get rich and have a lasting career. so how does that mean its slavery?
Modern slavery. This is really sad seriously. There is a LOT of idols who are UNDERAGE doing this kind of "job". They're being exploited 😔 Sometimes when i think about idols' life...I feel ashamed of supporting such a demanding and exploitative industry.
South Korea have high population compared to their resources so everything becomes very competitive but not necessarily will end up making lots of money because any job that is competitive offers great pay but not in South Korea though. That’s why the Koreans that I have met in USA are also one of the most hardworking people I know.
Entertainment company: I can explain Idols: you were making millions amd were only giving us 30k?? Rookies: 30k? We're getting 1k!!! Trainees: wait you guys are getting paid
If y'all want to be an idol, go for one of the Big 3 companies. For one, SM does not charge for training so at least you debut with no training debts. Another is that you get paid the minute you debut, granted that it is not a large sum but at least you get paid. And probably the most advantage is that most of their groups break even by 2-3 years. This is why the first 5 years are very packed with promotions and endorsements. After that, indivudual projects come in which is where the serious money is. The downside is that you have to pass their audition (which is not an easy thing to do) and survive sparta training.
Who told you that, actually SM don't pay their artist the moment they debut, NCT are still broke, they do pay for training and not get paid during their rookies days until they pay all the charges for promotions and training, xiumin said that before. Sorry for my ENG
@@doudadadou426 I have been into KPop since 2007 and this is the very first time I am hearing this. It is known that Big 3 does not require their trainees to pay because the management can afford to pay the expenses. Baekhyun said he gave SM a chance precisely because they did not ask him for training fees.
KPoppin est. 2007 that’s a lie... that’s the reason why tvxq split . the trio demand the transparency but sme wouldn’t budge. obviously they are milking them dry by giving excuses that they have trainee debt just so they can suck them dry. just compare them then to now, even though they are still ban from tv with less appearance in high rated shows they still manage to earned millions.

@@bling2405 also, did you ever hear of any ex trainees talk about training fees? They talked about how hard and competitive the training is but they never talked about training fees. Training fee debt was not the issue for JYJ but the unfair income distribution. Those are two different things.
This is CRAZY!! Kpop companies should be transparent when it comes to the funds. It's insane that there are thousands of idols who probably don't know and never will know how much they made :O
What's the point of working without receiving anything? And you have to pay for almost everything. I don't understand why anyone would accept that conditions.
Eunmi Kim Sadly that happens a lot and it is not just in the entertainment world but I heard even in teaching. One girl shared stories how she was scammed $5000 US dollars as she worked without pay. They promised to pay her but in the end, they ran off and she got nothing. Basically she was cheated and scammed. Sad world we live in with so many crooks.
This is why you have to be passionate about music before you get into it. Theres nothing in it apart from getting to play your music to the public, until you hit your lucky break.
This makes me pretty sad, especially considering you performed at a small concert for my work last year in socal. We're a pretty small company so I don't expect that my bosses even paid you that much. I just wish you were appreciated more for all your hard work
Early gang! Definitely gonna watch this later cause I've always wondered about this. with your talents you deserved to be rolling in dough! Love you Grace ❤

Popular members are more in demand, nct 127 most likely make the most bcz of tours and constant albums members in wayv make least because of littel to no promotion from sm lucas ten win-win are exceptions because sm let's them go act model and go on reality TV to make money. Nct dream make money of there albums which sale best in nct and nomin go on a lot of TV shows jaemin acts two so we must keep all this 8n consideration. Mark and Tae are worth over 1 mil tho so yeah

In return for popularity, cute clothes, nice skin, nails, and being on tv, you get no pay since it was all given to you by the company. But that's sad.
Thank you for being open about such a sensitive topic! Lots of young fans get caught up in what appears to be the glamorous idol lifestyle without considering your life before you make it(IF you make it) and the literal cost of getting there
And imagine even sadder that they have to deal with sasaeng fans ewwww but I am seeing this question alot in the comments y would they get into this knowing its this bad and that's the thing they don't know its that bad. Now thanks to social media more ppl have shared their experiences with us and to kinda give rookies a warning of the industry. Also some of yall forget kpop just start 20yrs ago or so its not like regular pop that had a super long history so of course it will take time to change and I hope it does i'll continue to support kpop this year i can say i been a kpop stan for a decade
I wouldn't say it's all about fame and money. Being able to share your music to a vast audience is very rewarding and worth it to lots of people. That's why non-Korean entertainers put up with lack of privacy, haters, paparazzi, etc. too.
This has similar vibe when students have to make loan to study in college, but in the end they are in debt with small chance to get a job. Well, at least it is in my country.....
Lee hyori talked about it last year. She said that they don’t earn any money from their music and even someone as popular as her only managed to get by because she did advertisements. And she said that GANGNAM STYLE MV only got him 36 000 dollars which is crazy
It really boggles my mind that it's legal to employ someone and not tell them how much they're making. I don't get how this accepted as just "the way it is" by so many people. It's like the perfect environment for companies to take advantage of artists.
thats why I try to support them so hard. I found this soloist called ruanne and she is amazing, she’s 16, speaks 4 languages and a PERFECT all rounder at every skill.. but apparently she couldn’t perform and I think her company is unknown or something cause I only found her through a youtube ad... the company seems to be putting a lot into her stuff tho.

This makes me think ..what BTS did ...bro their company was in debt ..how did they manage .. Now that I think if why they get excited over $5 or meat I feel bad ☺️
They didn’t start getting paid until recently 2018 they paid off their debt in 2017 people keep saying they are “billionaires” which is not true those fancy homes that they live in big hit bought those for them so after the disbandment they’d have a home for their families the cars that they have another future investment Jk got into an accident and totaled the first car they bought for him and had to pay out of pocket half the expenses for the second car. All those clothes that people look up online and see them wearing big hit purchases those yeah they buy some of em but best believe V is not in a Gucci store EVERYDAY and they have to pay big hit back for that as well SUGA produces most songs and rm does as well J-Hope did hopeworld so that probably got him a couple thousand plus they do interviews ect ect I wouldn’t think bts are millionaires or billionaires I’d probably take a guess that they all probably have 200k to 400k in their account and 400k is being really generous I think big hit gets most of that money IU is more successful in them she is also known in the US and she isn’t a millionaire and she’s been out longer people just think because they’re international they’re rich and it definitely doesn’t work like that for kpop
@@AuroraRosee03 huh? lol are u sure? All the BTS Members have their own houses or apartments. While Jin bought 2 apartments in the most expensive & luxurious building in Seoul. BH gift BTS a Mansion in the same building where Jin bought his apartments. Before the Internet I think it was simpler (not necessarily easier) to make a living purely from the music. Nowadays the business has shifted a lot, and being multitalented is much more necessary. Of course, depending on who you work for, even with all that talent, you might not get to showcase it too often. There's a huge difference between working with, or working for someone. Being an entrepreneur can be riskier, so acquiring the skill set to do that is important. I think transparency with money (what expenses are there, how much has accumulated, who's paying, what's the PAC) would go a long way to not only motivate the artists themselves, but to demystify this part of the business. As far as multitalented goes, or talented in general, people romanticise that a lot. Talent is mostly about the hours you put into systematically mastering any given thing. Most people aren't willing to do the work, so it's easier to just say "maybe she's born with it". Having a natural aptitude for something is of course important, and that can give a good indicator on what kind of skills to practice. However, there is a very low ceiling to what you can achieve by just natural aptitude. There is almost no limit to what you can learn by disciplined practice.
A problem with the Korean entertainment industry is that it's very locked down. You can't really do much more than just be an entertainer. This means you'll have to rely on that one source of income only.
@@reen0025 Something you'll need to learn in life is that there are always exceptions. However, if we always talk about the exceptions, we'll never get anywhere. Besides, I believe I worded it quite well. I didn't say completely locked down, which implies that there actually are exceptions. Nuances in word usage and such.
@stephen kroll But at least that is a stable income. When you essentially go from employed to unemployed all the time without knowing when your next job will show up, and not being able to do anything even if unemployed, then it's quite obvious that there'll be financial issues.
@stephen kroll When they have work to do, yes. But few have work to do every day, and some barely get any work some months. The essentially unknown groups can go without work for months.
thanks for putting a clip of Hani in you're video :). its so sad this is idols dream and most unless you're big from the start or blow up go though their 7 years if they make it to that and don't see a cent. EXID went though this so many albums and so much work and only after up and down became a hit and ah yeah came out did they start to get paid they don't have to go though that anymore but my heart goes to the rookies and unknown and underrated kpop artist.
The perks of being multi talented.. I'm lucky to have some talents (not a lot tho) I learnt throughout the years and benefit from them eventually(thank god!). seeking and improving our skills is truly an ADVENTURE. Love your contents Grace!
Your short video was really interesting and an eye opener. Good luck in your future endeavors. I certainly hope you don’t get any repercussions from the industry for exposing how some of them treat the potential artists.
This is exactly why people shouldn't give shit to idols. They put in hundreds and hundreds of training hours to give people something to watch. They literally struggle and at the end, they don't get the pay they deserve. People need to treat idols better. #Justiceforidols
Omygod imagine spending a lot of money for albums to get into their fansign to meet them only to realize they are not getting my money and being rich tf
It actually sounds like being a student. If you don't have a rich family you have to work for studying and living or take a credit. Some studying take years and you also don't get any money from it, not even a dorm for free living. Thats life 😪

This is absurd. Why is this still a thing? Why isn't there more people talking about this stuff? It's sad because there's so many people that dream of being an idol and they're all pretty much used by their company. Not only financially, but giving your whole life to them. This is messed up. And it's sad because I kinda feel bad for liking kpop and giving money to those companies :/

😭 i wonder how the orange caramel members are doing now
No way, Orange Caramel is legendary! My fave gg of all time!

Madtown was so good!! :(
Sadly, album sales don’t generate much profit.
I bet a lot of trainees who don't debut end up becoming staff of entertainment companies.
Idols get sasaeng fans and really don’t get paid enough for it. That’s awful.
Straight up better to hand cash directly to your favorite idols. Like here bb, go eat some real food.
😅😅😅
Right!
@stephen kroll wut?
@stephen kroll um I don't think that's a thing.. and even if it was I don't think it's common, companies put the idols on so many bans to prevent idols from dating, cuz they believe they'll lose fans if they're seen hanging out with potential lovers
That’s why a lot of fansites get their bias expensive gifts
What the.... is this even legal???!!!! Companies not paying their artist at all???
Sounds tough.
Thank god I stayed in school.
I gonna study hard. Bye.
😂
Good choice 😊
Thats why don't hate other idols, just support your idol rather than hating other idols.
If you don't like don't be a haters.
This is pitiful literally slave work
I know right? It is really REALLY sad, and there is a LOT of idols who are UNDERAGE. It is modern slavery, and sometimes when i think about this...I feel ashamed of supporting such a demanding and exploitative industry.
right??
how is it slavery if these people are willingly going into the industry
"We are broke as broke can be"-TLC one of the best selling girl groups of all time. "Read your contracts"
yup! it took TLC decades to get their money
Who’s TLC?
@@rachelcookie321 a popular girl group from the late 90s early 2000s
Modern slavery. This is really sad seriously. There is a LOT of idols who are UNDERAGE doing this kind of "job". They're being exploited 😔
Sometimes when i think about idols' life...I feel ashamed of supporting such a demanding and exploitative industry.
Poor toward the youngsters, maybe they had dream to make salary, make proud for their family, even they just love being a performer.
They chose this path tho
South Korea have high population compared to their resources so everything becomes very competitive but not necessarily will end up making lots of money because any job that is competitive offers great pay but not in South Korea though. That’s why the Koreans that I have met in USA are also one of the most hardworking people I know.
Entertainment company: I can explain
Idols: you were making millions amd were only giving us 30k??
@@bling2405 I don't know if you have been living in a rock somewhere but last time I heard, Yoochun's career is basically finished because of all the shit he was involved in while Jae is hated by the public because of that dumb joke he pulled. What is millions in won when your reputation is in the gutter?
@@bling2405 also, did you ever hear of any ex trainees talk about training fees? They talked about how hard and competitive the training is but they never talked about training fees.
Training fee debt was not the issue for JYJ but the unfair income distribution. Those are two different things.
This is CRAZY!!
Kpop companies should be transparent when it comes to the funds. It's insane that there are thousands of idols who probably don't know and never will know how much they made :O
What's the point of working without receiving anything? And you have to pay for almost everything. I don't understand why anyone would accept that conditions.
people don't know what they are getting into, and how bad things turn out until it happens. broken promises, cheating, and false hopes.
@@maykim8216 This is very sad.
Trinh Nguyen - Can’t you sue them for that?
Companies know that young people will do anything to get into kpop that's why they take advantage of it
This is why you have to be passionate about music before you get into it. Theres nothing in it apart from getting to play your music to the public, until you hit your lucky break.
Can we just take a moment to just PRAISE Grace for her AWESOMENESS
Company: what do u want for dinner

omg grace ive never been so early. it was posted like 2 mins ago !
welcome early crew!
This makes me pretty sad, especially considering you performed at a small concert for my work last year in socal. We're a pretty small company so I don't expect that my bosses even paid you that much. I just wish you were appreciated more for all your hard work

seventeen is pretty rich though
@@jyounghee nah, pledis doesn't pay really good

Early gang! Definitely gonna watch this later cause I've always wondered about this. with your talents you deserved to be rolling in dough! Love you Grace ❤
thanks for visiting early!
It’s really shady how companies don’t tell their artists how much they’ll make. They have the right to know.
This makes me appreciate the hard work of all idols so much more. They're only doing it for the performance and the entertainment and that is so selfless and amazing.
This is why you deserve the applause, for being straight and brave with almost anything regarding the industry. Bless you more.
@stephen kroll You have said it precisely though the focus is the K-Industry. It really is not new at all.
Just wanna say that I really love your content. I don't care if it is about kpop or just stuff you like, you always make entertainment content
We been knew that idols don’t get paid much unless your in the top
Sorn from clc does has a RUclips coz we know cube doesn't really care abt them, but now the tables has turned and they finally understood the potential they have and seriously stopped the favorism among groups like gidle and Pentagon! All three groups are my fav but clc has a special place
Starting the video I just wanted to say that I know its SPONSORED but birth control Is SO IMPORTANT and given your audience, more on the younger side Id say (im 27 with a IUD so im good haha), I'm glad you talk about this :)
thanks for understanding!
At0 KAJOU Agreed! Specially with the stigma and pressure korea puts on women
damn, you can make more at a fast food joint. Being a Kpop idol seems brutal
@stephen kroll This is kpop but cool info though :)
@stephen kroll Alright then :)
@stephen kroll they earned less as well
stephen kroll bro that was literally 90s
the fact that after years, you only got paid 0.... is still unfair no matter what.. hwo ru supose to make a living..?
Its like working very hard but instead of getting a paycheck you get a little fame and a huuuge dept . Why would anyone choose this lifestyle ...
I mean there's people who are very passionate about performing. It's something they can see them doing their whole lives.
Bob Ross Exactly which is why you need to have the passion for the art and not just think of money as you may or may not make it big to make big bucks.
stephen kroll Obviously but my point is to like and have the passion for what you do and not just think of money only. Not just referring to the Kpop or entertainment industry only but any profession as you can make big bucks and hate your job too. That would hell too.
I wander what's NCT's salary... They are 21...
that would be hard to tell bc they're split into sub units and don't always have songs as 21 or preform as 21
Wow didn’t know there was 21 members!
GRAZY GRACE Yes they have a lot of members that are split up into subgroups.
That explains why I've been so confused about the groups and members 😅
I love how honest you are :)
i’ve never been this early omg. anyways thank you grace for always sharing your own experiences and knowledge about the entertainment industry 💕
As much as I miss listening to new music from you, I'm happy to see that you're succeeding (and making money) in other aspects of the entertainment world. 💙
In return for popularity, cute clothes, nice skin, nails, and being on tv, you get no pay since it was all given to you by the company. But that's sad.
Spill the tea sis. ♡
Thank you for being open about such a sensitive topic! Lots of young fans get caught up in what appears to be the glamorous idol lifestyle without considering your life before you make it(IF you make it) and the literal cost of getting there

always excited to see a new vid from you
thank you love
I'm so happy that you can now show your true potential (as u said singing song writing fashion etc) fighting grace !!

I just don't understand how so many people wants to be idols if that's the situation they will live in.
That's exactly what I'm thinking.
Fakename Fakesurname Maybe they have dreams to be famous and have the idol status? Who knows?
@@TrinhNguyen-sh4fj You have a point. Being famous has it's perks.
Fakename Fakesurname I wonder about this very often.
Idol: How much am I getting paid?
Company: "Getting... paid? Paid? What? does? paid? mean?"
So cool to see this channel grow was here before you got 10k! Keep grinding 💪🏼
Random Chinese Guy thank u for supporting 💗
Lee hyori talked about it last year. She said that they don’t earn any money from their music and even someone as popular as her only managed to get by because she did advertisements. And she said that GANGNAM STYLE MV only got him 36 000 dollars which is crazy
The Korean Music Industry is so freaking corrupt it's disgusting. All these companies need to be legally required to pay a minimum livable wage.
I loved you on unpretty rap star and hoped everyone competing was doing well financially. This is so heartbreaking to hear as you all are so talented and deserved to make a good living 🥺
This makes me think ..what BTS did ...bro their company was in debt ..how did they manage ..
Now that I think if why they get excited over $5 or meat
I feel bad ☺️
JK bought his apartment (known by one the most luxurious apartments in Seoul) in 2016 by his OWN hard work money. Yoongi, Hoseok and Tae bought theirs too in-cash. While Jin bought 2 apartments in the most expensive & luxurious building in Seoul. BH gift BTS a Mansion in the same building where Jin bought his apartments. They still live together but I think they bought those apartments for personal space and privacy. Those fancy cars that they're driving came from their own black cards, full of money by their hard work pls. I can go on & on more by the properties that they bought by their own money, or some of their clothes and cars u're talking about but I won't be finished + the fact that some of them are very private for the things they're doing outside their “idol” life. Lol pls educate yourself first before opening ur mouth. Retard.
Cottidae not all companies though
Right only when you get big which is why a lot of the biggest idols buy apartments, it’s a steady flow of income
Respect to all hardworking idols!
thanks for putting a clip of Hani in you're video :). its so sad this is idols dream and most unless you're big from the start or blow up go though their 7 years if they make it to that and don't see a cent.

This is absurd. Why is this still a thing? Why isn't there more people talking about this stuff?
