I watched this video with my 5 year old son who experienced the entire opera in an absolute state of awe and joy. I'm sure that it was not only Mozart's eternal music t that mesmerized him but the delighful 18th century staging by Begman as well.

In opera, it's the voice that counts. Basses are usually assigned roles of fathers, kings, philosophers, and thus often play characters much older than they are in real life. Just listen to the voice. Sometimes, I must admit it does get to be a bit of a stretch. Watch Samuel Ramey as king Phillip in Don Carlo (The Zefferelli production at La Scala in 1992.). It gets to be a bit much seeing him sing about how old and wrinkled he is and how his young wife is repulsed by the fact that he's old and ugly. When you listen to the audio version of this same production, however, Ramey's voice acting shines through, uninhibited by the bizarre visuals of the video version.
