Crazy to think that he was first introduced to opera at 27 years old and by the time he decided to try opera and was cast into his first role he admitted he didnt even know that much about the art while he was on stage, i forget which opera he was cast into but it just goes to show, dont ever underestimate yourself because you think you are starting too late or the opportunity already passed
A few years back I was attending a PARSIFAL performance in Hamburg & was not expecting anything REALLY remarkable but from the beginning Selig's Gurnemanz totally held my attention for his astounding vocal beauty & powerful characterization. His legato singing, which German consonants often prove to be problematic for many voices, is superb here & I wish You Tube could find more of his work.
Merci !
I really enjoy this Sarastro! Is my dream to perform Sarastro one day, but now i enjoy singers like this, doing his best in this wonderful role! Congratulations. Can anybody give me a link to see the full ópera please?
Why does this fantastic dramatic interpretation bring tears to my ears on every hearing, while the more famous Kurt Moll's recordings on youtube leave me wanting more from him? Perhaps Moll was past his prime.
Thanks for this beautiful upload. In order to kill my curiosity (and out of respect for the performers) please add the full information on this rendition
I'm certain the silence was not meant as disapproval; rather as deep appreciation. At this filmed performance, the audience may have been asked to refrain from applause. And let us acknowledge that listeners can be so moved that they remain silent after a cut-off, enraptured by the beautiful moment.
They instructed the audience to not applaud because they were gonna record. I watched the whole thing (it's the same performance with Damrau) and they didn't applaud for the other arias too.

Well " Lasst( sie der Prüfung...) " is raspy, thats clear to everybody. But it can happen. His "Ä" and "I" vocals are too sharp for my taste, but most german singers have the problem to sing too tight, they´re not using their whole body. Selig is a good artist and his interpretation is quite good but for me its to artificial, because he trys to sound like a Bach singer here. Jerome Hines sings it sacred too, but with the whole body and thats what opera singing for basses is basically about.

Basing one's life philosophy off of the example of rare talent is highly risky and more than likely a setup for complete failure

I Love this man's voice and stage presence. Such superb vocal technique and facial expressions! Bravo!
Was für eine Stimme...!!! Besser kann man die Arie nicht interpretieren! Chapeau!
He is the best sarastro I've ever heard!
Tears welled up in my eyes with that low F.. Tremendous legato Voice. What an instrument
That isn't raspy, it is resonant and deep bass quality. It is big and beautiful. Bassjack
His face is kinda funny though... XD

How can people really press the "unlike" button? What is there not to like about this? Fabulous singing. Amazing interpretation.
They probably think it´s the download button...

The GREAT German Bass nowadays. A really spectacular GURNEMANZ in Hamburg
a few years back.
Probably the best operatic bass I have ever heard by a long way.
Really pushing the Enlightenment angle in this staging. Just a fantastic production and such a great voice....
The finest Sarastro ever ! Nobody else comes even close

Extraordinaria voz....
Gigantic and musically perfect. Brilliant!!
I really don't care what the protocol is: I have clapped loudly. He sang the heaven into and hell out of this Aria. Fabuloso!
Beautiful voice 👏👏👏👏👏👏.
Thank you very much. This is so beautiful.
This is a fine performance.
Lovely deep, resonant, rich bass. Raspiness is due to bad sound quality, and not due to the bass.

I wish that someone could do an unabridged film of "The Magic Flute" and have Franz play the priest in it. He has a beautiful singing voice.

Little raspy for my liking, but still good. I, personally, have a taste to warmer bassos.

It's a shame that they told them not clap. He deserved a full standing ovation.
I disagree, if people clap would stop the magic of the art and the story. It's an opera, not a single performance.
I can’t believe nobody applauded at the end… He sang amazingly! The audience claps only Tenors and Sopranos 🙄
They instructed the audience to not applaud because they were gonna record. I watched the whole thing (it's the same performance with Damrau) and they didn't applaud for the other arias too.

Tied with Figaro from Marriage of Figaro for the best bass role.
Wasn't Figaro a baritone role?
