- Description:
Through the Wall: A/C Installation Types For those installing a through-the-wall air conditioner, the first thing you want to determine is how thick your wall is. Measure the distance from the inside of the home to the outside of the home including the studs, sheet rock, and whatever type of material you have on the outside of your home. All these factors come into play in selecting the proper air conditioner.
The air conditioner used in the above video is what called a window/wall slide-out chassis air conditioner, meaning this air conditioner can go into a window or be installed through a wall, as displayed. For a wall installation it's quite simple. First, remove the grill from the air conditioner. This is going to expose the chassis, or guts, of the air conditioner. The guts of the air conditioner simply slide right out of the sleeve, or the metal housing that is installed through the wall.
You will notice the vents on the side of the air conditioner; they’re there so the air conditioner can breathe. These vents cannot be blocked in any way. If you happen to have brick on the outside your home it will start to block the vents, causing the air conditioner to improperly function. If you have a cinder block construction you're blocking even more of those vents. Again, these vents cannot be blocked in any way. Therefore, with this type of construction on the outside of your home, a true through-the-wall air conditioner is recommended.

*So amazingly quiet and **Fastly.Cool** in my room! 42db is at a whisper level. I bought 2 and installed myself.Very sturdy bracket and easy to adjust to fit windows of different size. Absolutely fabulous units!!*
I'm sure you meant well, but that did absolutely nothing to walk me though the A to Z installation of a wall unit.
Exactly no offense, are you a woman also trying to get help to install your air conditioner in the wall ?cause I know I am.
I'm a man trying to do it right😂
Thanks I turned this off as soon as I read your comment.
🤣🤣🤣🤦🏾♂️
Yeah no kidding. The wall was already cut out too.
Thank You P.C. Richard for explaining how the thickness of the exterior wall dictates the type of wall unit to install given the air flow requirements. Makes a lot of sense not to restrict air flow from the design of the unit. I have a 200 sf room with 4 inch exterior wall. A wall unit with 6000 BTU's is all I need. Ptac units are slightly too large and un-needed. Thanks again.
I'm most impressed that he lifted an AC and cinder block with no problems
You noticed that too.. something wasn't right with that was it?!
Guess he took his vitamins

Thanks didn’t know there was a difference between window and wall.
This just answered my question to why my ac kept getting hot and going off. My apt comes with a wall unit but the sides of the wall are metal so it overheats. How the heck do I fix that problem
I looked up wall ac sleeves, since mine doesn’t have those side vents. Literally every sleeve I found online does not have those. Are you sure they’re necessary? In fact even all my neighbors ac wall units don’t have those side vents on the sleeve.
Sir why the height is three to four feet from the ground on window type AC
this video doesn't show building a frame, making sure the A/C has propper tilt for f the condensation drainage like for instance a GE model AKL24 24,000 Btu in a window installation will have 3 1/2 inches of tilt to the back for drainage or the condensation will end up draining into your house. 1 1/2 inches of tilt should suffice though
And if you’re in the south with massive humidity, it will quickly get filled with mold. Happened only to the one that wasn’t tilted when put in my window. Wondering if you can have a tilt when installed into a wall. Need this info basically now!
After filling gap with foam around air conditioner in wall sleeve. Where do I purchase a frame to go around a/c. That makes it look good ??
carl freda u just buy trim and cut it to fit
A bit late for you, but I just did this. I ordered a 24in x 16in inside diameter painted wood picture frame for about $40 and placed it over the unit to hid the ugly foam-tape filled gaps, and it works like a charm. Choice of color to match the room decor as well, and CHEAPER than an ugly white plastic "universal trim kit"!
My ac doesnt have a chassis and its black. Does that mean it wont work?
Great video - I love how you show an entire fake wall, but two things - I am planning to replace my old through the wall AC/heat unit. This old one leaves SO MUCH cold or hot air into the house that I have totally blocked it off for the last three years inside and out. How do I know a new one isn't going to be equally freezing me in the winter even if I do cover the outside with tons of wrap? Also I would like to find one that isn't so $&$(#&* UGLY and so intrusive into the house. Are there any that are flush with the wall or stick out maybe an inch? Most websites don't show the view in the wall so impossible to tell. thanks!
Did you ever find a through the wall unit
@@gradyrogers6707 🤣😂
@@JewlofTheNile914 I finally had my, "through the wall" ac unit installed few months ago. Looks FANTASTIC
Well, did you ever find one, I did, a very nice looking one
how much total cost????
Nice 👍🏽
Is it ok when the motor and compressor is getting wet by the rain?
No. You have the one air conditioner in the world that can't get wet
Is it okay that the aircon has the same width as the hole width in the wall?
Mark, these guys are idiots, you can find your answers here :- ruclips.net/video/clAV92yTL2Y/видео.html
Either you are Hercules or that is a really light A/C unit you removed :)
U know you put the block the wrong way on the unit to make it look like it blocks more rite?
So is there really an advantage to a thru the wall ac vs a window ac? They look the same. I do not have windows condusive to holding any ac.. x_x
Wall installs are for larger units that use 240v. They have a better seal also when done right. Window units are leaky and look like low income housing.
Yes
I'm so confused in how this can provide proper strong support without external brackets attached to the exterior wall. It would have been really helpful to see how and where exactly the sleeve was mounted to give ac unit proper support without installing an external bracket platform.

My client Stay in the high rise bldg,, the whole building have built-in air conditioners in the wall and she told me all I have to do is check my home Depot for the metal trip that goes around the air conditioner and seal the drywall off & air coming from the outside. And it has a hard cage Screen on the outside on the back of the of the air conditioner. I mean it's all neat it's kool.
What house is built with the cinder block in that direction?
Steubenville Police Scanner just showing thickness, they are 8x8x16. Turn it the right way. Still 8 inches off wall.
Don't let this guy fool you, this is a trick question. The answer is: "none". For blocks are made out of concrete not cinders. That's why they are called "concrete block".
It's a good thing that nothing like wall studs are in the way.
...oh, wait...
And siding. And window shutters. And wires.
What a boneheaded video!
how much does it cost to have someone install this?
What?
perfect example of amateurs doing a better job posting DIY's than corporations.
Too wimpy; we out here know more than you do.
I'm not saying the block wouldn't obstruct the vents but thats now u would lay a block on a wall lol just thought that funny
The landlord special
Just cut out and install a window, then get a window unit!
I like the way you think
That would be absolutely stupid homeowner idiocy. Put a mini split in.
@@pantera1125 Yep. Mini splits are the best.
Hi Jackie sounds like a good idea Thank you.
A lot of inaccurate statement & lies in this, this upload is just an advertising campaign.
Bought a brand new wall ac and it is leaking inside! I live in a condo with a built in sleeve! I bought the new ac because the old one was leaking. New ac is very tight in the height and cannot be tilted. Pc Richard’s will NOT RETURN! I’m at my wits end! 😭😭😭
I've found great handbook on woodprix website. Good solutions for everyone I think.
Well, i'll never get that 2 minutes of my life back. That was not at all helpfull.
I'm a woman,& I want to put my air conditioner in my wall, I asked two guys which R my neighbors,,,& they went silent on me,,so I have to do it myself..
Jewl, I have your answer :- ruclips.net/video/clAV92yTL2Y/видео.html Any questions, please ask, I will help you.
😂
What the heck is this? might as well put a neighbor on the back when you spin it around.. make it interesting enough to watch til the end..
This is not a how to install video.
WTF is a "TRUE THROUGH THE WALL AIR CONDITIONER"? and why didn't you mansplain it?
Excellent question.. It come's from a stupid statement. This video WILL help you :- ruclips.net/video/clAV92yTL2Y/видео.html They didn't "mansplain" it cause this guy is a girl who clearly has Never installed an aircon.
a through the wall ac unit has exhaust louvers that blows out of the back of the unit, and not on the sides, like a window unit
@@gradyrogers6707 Wrong. There is No difference in any box unit to dissipate the heat. Whether you install it in a window frame or through a wall. And before you attempt to embarrass yourself with a reply, remember YOUR RUclips channel has Nothing. Action speaks louder than words.
Hey guy not all units slide out like this one. Plus you should take up a new day job you are very bad at this leave it to the professionals.
But wait, thats a window air conditioner through the wall. A true through the wall air conditioner has no side or top vents, they strictly vent out the back. Thats why there is a difference
Can I install a through the wall ac unit in my living room with the garage on the otherside
No
@@jojojohnson9168, why not
