    Edit: This was shot before the recent G9II firmware update. Thanks for watching everyone! This is the final video shot over in Perth. It was such a nice trip away. I really dig both of these two cameras but I wanted to share some thoughts on both formats after travelling with both recently. Also! I have a camera from a different brand on the way. Any guesses? 😅

    After all travel content with m43, I'm surprised you haven't mentioned the 14-140mm being lighter, smaller and reaches noticably further than its FF counterpart. I was eyeing out that piece of glass before I looked at the camera bodies for the system 😅

      Right... the 14-140mm is an incredible lens for Travel Photography!!!

      Over the last six years, the 14-140 is my go-to for solo gimbal b-roll work for clients. Starting with it on the GH5s this "super zoom" allows me to be -just- wide enough, but have the considerable 10x zoom reach needed to punch in for close-ups when shooting aerospace, etc. And now on the new MFT cameras, you get the reliable autofocus needed with this lens to trust the camera. I love it! Art school shallow DOF is fine for the talking heads later in the shoot day, but sometimes the paycheck is about what you can see, not what is just out of focus... :)

    I have both and it pains me to say that once I got the S9, my G9II has been sitting in its camera back collecting dust. Not for any other reason than the S9 is just more compact and fun to shoot with. For me the G9II is now relegated to wildlife shoots where the smaller telephoto lenses really shine imo

    Thank you so much for the comparison! You always do a great job! Two things made me not purchase the S9. No hot shoe!!! And I have many M43 lenses and 0.0 lenses for the S9. It is a novel addition though. Not many people can see that much difference in these two systems. I also never had anyone tell me that ugh, that must have been shot with a M43! I shoot night clubs and HS reunions and never had a complaint for using M43 cameras! I'll keep my G9II for a while! I also have a GH6 monster and have been shooting some portraits with it as it seems to have the best skin tones. Anyway keep on testing as you are one of the best!!!

    For me, considering the ENTIRE system and optics, the PANASONIC G9 II wins, hands down: high quality of photos and videos, IBIS at the highest level, and precisely so many quality and tiny fixed optics!

    I cant figure out if you have good lighting conditions, and you have the same focal lengths do you produce the same image out of micro 4/3 and fullframe? Say your put into a situation where u need to crop in post? Ive been mainly full frame sony but just purchased a Lumix G9ii, which i love also.

      I was in Japan 2 months ago, while there I dropped , broke my camera.... Picked up an old Lumix G6 and 12-32 pancake, thought it would be restricting but never really had a situation where I really wanted anything longer....possibly the Lumix 12-60 would have been better but the 12-32 is super compact and really the shots were pretty good....

    I've always liked M43 for hiking. First with my G9, now with the G9 mark 2. I'm still figuring out when to take the S9. I did go hiking using the S9 with the 20-60mm lens and love the video out of that combination. I haven't tried the hybrid zoom, so I was leaning towards the G9 mark2 for hikes where I need a telephoto-style lens and S9 when wides can cover it. I bought the S9 for street photography and enjoy it there. Great to have such choices. Very nice video of your thoughts. Really enjoyed it.

    I was in Perth last week for 6 days. I took my G9ii plus a good mixture of lenses. It worked great as a travel camera from shooting koalas at Yanchep to night shots of the CBD from Kings Park. Flying from the UK the lighter lenses compared to my Lumix full frame lenses was a real boon. (I do a lot of concert photos and video so a camera without mechanical shutter is a no go.)

    I think once the next crop of smaller m43rds bodies arrives this will be a tough one. The g92 isn’t really supposed to compete with the s9, but I get it, you choose between what you have on hand!

  • @gordon3988
    @gordon3988 9 дней назад

    Interesting comparison…and well done! I think compact and small will almost always win out for travel and probably street, so can see the draw of the S9! G9ii and small lenses close…and of course if you want wildlife too it is great. Different tools for different needs and the G9ii likely covers more options…but suspect the s9 may get more ‘fun’ use.

    I wouldn't consider a camera without an EVF.
    I still think G85/G95 with 14-140 is best for travel if you don't shoot much video and outdoor photo in good light is your main thing.

Great channel too , have learned a lot from you over the last year so thanks

    I think the ergonomics of the body and how well the lenses balance on it is such an important factor. The S9 just looks silly and uncomfortable with most lenses on it (as great as the photos and footage looks). The G9II isn’t perfect but the handling and balance with smaller lenses would certainly feel much better in hand ❤ great video!

  • @mmartel

    I think your conclusion is on point re: the best use of m43 is for lightweight zooms, which are versatile and lighter but not as fast on an equivalence basis with FF in terms of shallow DoF and aperture. traveling with massive heavy lenses like the awesome 10-25mm f1.7 is IMO just a foolish way to go unless you're being paid! Lenses like P14-140/O14-150, PL12-60mm, P12-60, PL12-35mm/O12-40 plus a prime or two like the 9mm f1.7 or 15mm f1.7 and youre all set for low light. That said, on FF the Lumix 28-200mm or 18-40 also makes a very strong case for going the L mount direction. Personally, the S9 just doesnt appeal due to lack of EVF - 100% deal killer for me. That said an S5ii with 28-200mm and/or 20-60mm and a prime are compelling. But for now I'm satisfied enough with my G9, G95, and EM1X and stable of m43 lenses. The image and video quality may not be as good but its plenty good enough for me to continue enjoying the capture experience and the results. Cheers.

    I'm definitely the outlier, but I like the mft primes a lot and I've never fallen in love with a zoom on any system. Last year I've been traveling with the G9II and a rotation of the PL 15mm, 25mm and 200mm. For me handling trumps a lot of things. I could see myself using a number of systems, but I'm totally happy with what I have right now.
    My biggest complaint about the G9II would be the flimsy focus select lever and the squeaky AF-ON button. Those annoy me more than anything regarding IQ.

    I'm so sad the S9 doesn't have an EVF. I know for a lot of folks that won't really matter but for shooters like myself that are so accustomed to having one it makes it a tough buy. On those bright days when you're really trying to dial stuff in for settings, composition, focus, etc it is so helpful to have the EVF. Camera is so appealing to me otherwise. Currently shooting with a G9II and have no regrets though!

      I use a G1Xiii as everyday carry and I wish it didn't have an EVF. Hardly ever use it, but it adds a lot of bulk.

    You're not a douche bag!!!
    I have the S9 and 20-60 plus the useless 26 mm plus a nice Sigma 45mm 2.8. I like the images it gives, but my big negative with it is how hard it is to frame, and especially to either manual focus or to verify that focus is on the right spot in outdoor scenarios, especially in bright sunshine. I don't know how you did it there in Hawaii or Perth or at home!

  • @wojciechczupta

    g9ii with old Olympus primes is really handy (12, 17, 45mm). I'm not sure about sharpness of 12 and 17 is sufficient for 4k but still the picture is very pleasing.

    Not a fan of the form factor of the S9. I have a S5 as well as g92. I have the 24-70 2.8 lens for both. The weight of the m4/3 versus the full frame is quite noticeable with lens. I’d much prefer the G92 for travel due to lens size.

    I’m going to be selling all my Fuji stuff soon. I use a canon R5 for my “pro stuff” but tossing up between a G9ii or an S5IIX with a Set of Sigma i series lenses.
    My G9ii kit would probably be a 15 1.7, 20mm 1.4 oly, 12-60 Leica zoom and a 12mm 1.4 Leica

    I don't really consider the G9 a travel camera at all. Too big for my tastes. Looking at the G90, that's about the biggest I would want as a general travel camera. Clearly the feature set of the S9 is enough for travelling so why bring something as powerful as the G9ii, haha.

    The weight of a camera without a lens is meaningless; you have to compare 2 comparable things.
    Lumix G9II 12-35 f2.8 (eqff 24-70f2.8) = 570gr+ 310gr = 880gr
    S9 24-70f2.8 = 400gr+ 935gr= 1335gr
    The S9 with a standard zoom is therefore 50% heavier than the G9II

    • @GeekyNerdyTechy
      @GeekyNerdyTechy  10 дней назад +1

      How about S9 with the 20-60 kit lens (which is what I use). It weighs only 350 grams and makes the weight issue far less problematic. It might not be apples to apples, of course - but it's a versatile lens. I don't own a 24-70 full frame lens for that very reason - they are way too big.

    • @dopravnivideacz
      @dopravnivideacz 10 дней назад +2

      To be fair, 12-35 F2.8 is equivavalent to 24-70 F5.6 in terms of DOF and low-light noise.
      So for more weight you get better options, if you need them.
      S9 with 20-60 F3.5-5.6 is lighter in weight and still better at wide end.
