Some battles just aren't worth fighting.... you did the gentleman thing and moved on. Just shows how respectful and mature you are as a person. I think it was a good call on your part.
Couldn't agree more. It would have been hard for me to leave since the dock owner came with an aggressive tone, but the angler was definitely the bigger man for leaving. We need more of this these days.
@mcvennison1101 No, he wasn't doing anything wrong... Sometimes it's better to just say sorry and move along even if you're right. Lesson I learned with my wife YEARS ago. You don't have to go through life proving a point at every turn even when you're right.
It’s just like somebody being butthurt about parking in their usual spot on the street, the neighbors may respect his wishes but if I’m just an infrequent visitor they can miss my ass.
I have never heard any dock owner ask so nicely so I’m with you I would have just moved on. Nothin wrong with being a gentleman, this world is definitely short on them lately.

Yeah, the guy wasn't wrong. It's no different than saying "I'd appreciate it if you didn't wear sunglasses inside". It doesn't mean you aren't legally allowed to, but rather an expression of preference and a polite request that you not do it.
In this age it seems everybody is looking for a fight, you handled it with class! I was fishing in Sebastian in Nov. when another fisherman thought I came to close. I always try to give others a wide berth. Yelling at me I just said,"Look,do you want to fight or do you want to accept my apology. He smiled and apologized too and said that he might have over reacted. Thanks for the great video!
Very respectable thing to do, especially with what seemed to be an older gentleman. The old saying, “just because you can, doesn’t mean you should” came true. Just not worth giving someone a heart attack over - and the dock owner was respectful too. Great job! I was just at my mother’s home on the Indian River. A boat with three fishermen with a guide came up on my mom’s dock. My mom got a little upset because they were so close, but being a fisherman myself, I explained they aren’t causing you any harm and they have every right to fish there. Well done sir!😊
This interaction you highlighted in the video just goes to show that you are a class act, sir. You are right, as far as I know that you had every right to fish that dock but respectfully moved when he asked 'nicely'. I have read online (so take with several large grains of salt) that in florida there is a statute that it is a class ii misdemeanor punishable by up to 60 days in jail and a $500 fine to attempt to interfere with a fisherman or hunter in the lawful taking of game fish or animals and an navigable waterway including docks as long as you don't tie to or stand on them are part of the waterway. Great PB btw!
He wasn't belligerent about it at least, stated his concern calmly, explained his POV, and never outright said you have to go. Honestly, that's the calmest "confrontation" I've ever seen.
I understand both sides of the situation. I found his request the most appropriate of those I have heard in the past. He just said he would appreciate it if you didn't fish the dock. I think that covers the situation perfectly. He didn't say you can't, he just said he would appreciate it if you didn't. Well done by both of you in my humble opinion.
He was probably wrong, but you did the right thing in moving. I think you nailed it when you said he was affected by the storm, so he has earned the right to tell others to not fish his dock and said it nicely. You're a good man John!
He has "earnted" nothing. But JS did the classy thing by avoiding an unnecessary confrontation. At some point it will be necessary - the only way to disabuse the dock owner of thinking he owns the water as well as the wood.
As a person that just finished working 25 years in the commercial/charter fishing industry here on the east coast of Florida yes you were perfectly legal. I've had the exact same thing happen numerous times while Sheepshead fishing. I think you handled the situation very nicely. I even fished one dock where the home owners set up gigantic and very loud speakers on their dock and they wait until you start fishing then turn on and BLARE opera music. It's enough to give you a headache but just to spite them I stay there and fish.
You were perfectly withjn your rights to fish there and I think it’s more than a little weird that he asked you not to. However, you made the same call I would have. Not worth the aggravation (or potential for escalation) to stay. As always, love the content!
It's not weird. Perhaps he has grandkids that swim over there and doesn't want one stepping on a hook that broke off. As a former dock owner I can tell, you that the docks are built on land leased from the state. The water is state property. As, long as you don't touch the dock you can fish.
I respect you for moving. More importantly you probably were wise from a personal safety perspective. I'm familiar with his dock and it would seem to be a primo spot but it's not worth the confrontation. Love your videos.

You showed good grace during this encounter. I for one don't understand how people believe that they own the water. Our licenses pay to protect the fisheries.

You did the right thing John, but legally you are allowed to fish that dock, but some battles just aren’t worth fighting, as you said there’s plenty more fish and docks! Great content as always!
Good on you John. Sometimes it's not worth the headache. However, sometimes people need to get over themselves. They don't own the water. It would depend on what mood I'm in. Good luck.
My buddy lives on a creek/canal, has the fish light, etc. I am new to all of this, but I have fished docks with an owner standing there and we had a great conversation. However, you were the bigger man. Yes, the hurricane was horrible, etc. you did right, but legally, I think you were in the right. Will follow this to learn because I want to bring home a sheepshead for dinner sometime.
At least the guy asked you nicely and didn't run out and start threatening to call the cops and the national guard like I've seen some people do. I honestly believe some of them just want to be on the RUclipss. There's already enough of those confrontation videos out there by guys who bait those yahoos to create content. I'm happy to see you show that you have too much class and enough quality content, not to have to resort to that.
You handle that like a boss. But I believe that everything happens for a reason. You didn't waste any time or bait at that dock he helped you out.. thanks for sharing
The homeowners approach was definitely respectful. Knowing what people have been through down there, I would have moved on. Plenty of docks to throw at and that is one that you respectfully walk away from. I know the feeling but it was the right thing to do
Hey John, another great day on the water. You certainly did the right thing by moving to a better spot. Some people are just angry by nature. Like they say, theres plenty of fish in the sea. Tight lines my friend.
I think you were right in with how you handled it. I try and reason with them and make the same points the way you did. Just not worth the effort with so many other fishable socks out there. Great content and catches as always!
i think you handled that situation perfectly, even though you had all right to fish there but it's like you said, you can related and as it turned you, it was for the better.
Part of the enjoyment of fishing, in my view, is getting away from people and all the stress they cause. So in that same situation, I would have moved immediately and not engaged at all. Who is right and who is wrong is almost beside the point; there is no enjoyment to be had with someone like that watching you. Thank you for sharing this helpful video John. I am watching your fluke course on Salt Strong so I know what I'm doing when I try fluke fishing for the first time in the 2024 season.
Right call to move even though you are within your rights to be there. Being courteous to property owner and respecting their wishes makes you the better person and avoid unnecessary harassment. You are a true ambassador to the rest of us fishers
I think you showed restraint and respect. Although that man has no legal ground to stand on and I highly doubt there is a big grouper nursery located under his specific dock he did ask nicely and that is rare. I'd like to think I would leave but if I'm honest I would initially leave although if I had no luck nearby I would go back. I would tell him that if the first fish I caught was a juvenile grouper I would move on again. I would also offer him half of what I caught under his dock if he wanted.
You handled it well, I agree with your point of view. He sounded like he has some deep roots there too, I would have given him a hat tip and move on as well. I will be purchasing your new rod in the spring, looking forward to getting a feel for it vs. my go to black fish rod that pulled up that 18.5 pounder. I have the utmost confidence in that rod in the future on the jumbo hunts. The red one looks like it will be a great striper rod for the boat.
John, I believe you weren’t violating any laws but I think what’s most important here is that he respectfully asked and you were empathetic to the issues he’s been facing. Bravo, Skinner. Handled that like a gentleman. Now, had he come at you like an unhinged Karen/Ken, then I would have fished there until the cows came home.
I think you did the right thing. I wouldnt want to cause someone to feel put upon over a fishing spot. The owner is probably upset about the loss of his dock and business there and is just taking it out on you but you did the right thing.

Good on you for being rational and just moving on but I would file a complaint with the authorities and have them remind the person that they don’t own the water!!! 🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄
Echoing what others say, he doesn't own the water or the fish, and in some cases could be ticketed for harassment. But he could become violent, not worth it for any fish. You made the right move, got rewarded with some nice fillets. Kind of a win-win!
I get hassled on a lake i frequent for fishing off of an island with a cottage on it (happens to have a rocky point that holds a lot of smallmouth bass) and the owner has dogs that constantly bark at you, the owner often comes out and yells at me because she says i am disturbing her dogs, i moved the first few times that this happened but now i just ignore her and if i have had enough of it, state that she does not own the water which does no good, some people are just ***holes and there is nothing you can do about it
My late dad owned Party Boats in Cape May and for a few years I was his mate. What drove me crazy were the customers who would point their rod right on top of another fisherman's rod because one guy was catching lots of fish and the second wasn't catching anything. Never dawned that there wasn't a hole50 or 60 feet below the surface filled with fish or that he just didn't know how to fish.
You had a right to fish there, but doing so would have ruined his day, and to a certain extent, probably your own as well as the situation escalated. It seems you drew in some good fishing Karma and probably helped keep his day on the rails as well. I'll try to emulate your thoughtful decision if i find myself in a similar situation, as i respect you more for leaving than i would have if you won the battle at the homeowners emotional expense. You're a good man Skinner.
I really like the wide gunnels on your boat! You did the right thing with this cat, anyone that's going to spout like that is usually capable of escalation.
I'm in Australia and I've seen a number of videos from the US where dock owners react like the guy did on this occasion. I just don't get it as down here I'm guessing most dock owners love to see people out enjoying the outdoors and engaging in a healthy activity. I have a 50 ft dock on my place and I think it's great when I see people out there trying to catch a fish. It's even better when I see young ones in the boat. Not saying that it doesn't happen here as I'm sure there are people who just can't help themselves when it comes to power games. I've just never seen it along our stretch of water.
It seems to be me that dock owner was worried about the condition of the dock. He could be worried it would damage your boat and have you snag unseen pilings. He is also worried about the baby fish there. It could be a nest. He asked nicely and you nicely moved. Well done to the both of you.
Good call all around honestly, he had legitimate concerns and you waived off amicably. That was as good a result as any. I fish up here in Elias' area and docks and sheepshead are the standard, you just have to mentally prepare yourself every trip that you might get into it with a dock owner.
The old man asked nicely (yelled from a distance with that southern kindness) and didn't curse you out, you did the right thing. He's probably had people poking around on or near his boat, its Florida, the natives there are crazy and pack heat- you made the best choice, it's not worth getting shot over a fish. You want to catch a 10LB+ sheepshead, try southern NJ in late July- mid September.
I have lived in SE Florida since 67 and do not see an issue with fishing anywhere that is not posted - but also as soon as he asked, I would have moved, there are a lot more places to fish and it is not worth a fight -
In Texas you may own the dock and trespassing if you get on it but the water is controlled by the State, which makes it public property. While it was nice that you moved, I don't think legally you had to.
As long as you’re not ON his property, you can fish wherever there’s water! You do need to choose what “hill you want to die on,” and some (this one) aren’t worth it. A-holes be a-holes.
It happened to me this past summer here in Virginia.I was catching White Perch left an right and I got approached the same way but I think they were cusing about me too.Atleast the situtation didn't get violent. When they approached I just moved away tring to avoid confrontation. It still was bs!
You were legally right. I live a bit north of you and it says a lot about you that you didn’t tell the guy to kick rocks. If you fish enough then you don’t have to be greedy and can watch someone else spout and walk away. That guy was just being Florida man. Formerly from L.I. Exactly 99.9 miles from the lot at the end down here for good now.
YOU ARE A TRUE PROFESSIONAL. DO NOT LOWER YOUR STANDARDS, STANDARDS END WITH YOU. YOU WITH ALL YOUR POWERS, COULDN’T HAVE REASONED WITH THAT GUY. YOU ARE A PLEASURE 🌶️
I fish docks in SE Fl often. If someone asks or tells me to leave their dock alone I don’t hesitate. Legal or not I respect their wishes, lots of water out there.
John, I have seen this before. Summertime snapper are crawling with jumbo mangrove snapper….winter it’s sheepshead. Some folks feel that because the own the dock they own the water & own the fish there. Not worth the argument /hassle/aggravation. If you really want to push it call FWC. Personally I’d just move on to another dock .
When and where is a good place from shore in Virginia to catch anything from Jan. To February, I’ll be there and want to fish. Thanks in advance. Love you videos John, you taught me how to catch flounder one after another from surf, with gulp, those cameras are awesome
You were legally allowed to be there, but I would have moved on too. Sometimes peace with worth more than "exercising your rights". You still had an enjoyable and productive day fishing. So, you didn't lose anything.
Good morning Mr Skinner I know in Staten Island there's a bunch of docks and all that and pilings and I know we do have Sheepshead there since I don't have a boat I do a lot of surf fishing and pier fishing and I still can't find the Sheepshead
As a dock owner, I will say respectful boaters are not a problem. It is the guys who let the wind carry the boat right into the dock splitting dock boards, snagging and breaking off lures that I have to dig out so kids don't get stuck, trash that washes up on the shore, etc. Boaters would have a heart attack if someone backed into their boat while at the loading ramp but don't care about their boats hitting docks and causing damage while they are fishing.
Maybe the New York to Florida lingo changes, but when I hear someone say "thank you" before you decide if youre going to stay or leave, I interpret it as a "get the F out of here. The guy took advantage of the words "thank you" and "id appreciate it." As a dock owner on Long Island, the only rule (optional) that I have when someone is fishing my canal space is to yell and get my attention when they catch something so i can be happy with them.
Some battles just aren't worth fighting.... you did the gentleman thing and moved on. Just shows how respectful and mature you are as a person. I think it was a good call on your part.

Catch 22. Reinforcing bad behaviors like the dock owner is bad for everyone. I would have told the owner to call the DNR or the cops.

Class act John. Not sure I could have acted as civil but I hope so. Congrats on some beautiful inmates.
He was pretty polite and asked nicely. I think you did the right thing.
Respect. You handled that like a man. More than a fisherman, A mature adult.
Love that big grin on your face when you were showing that pb . That's what it's all about congrats on that one. !
Good on you John. Sometimes it's not worth the headache. However, sometimes people need to get over themselves. They don't own the water. It would depend on what mood I'm in. Good luck.
The dock is their property, they own it. The do NOT, however, own the water.
Nor anything that LIVES in the water.
New subscriber, I learned something from your interaction; not every issue is worth a battle. Well done. Btw - love your videos!
A pretty civil discourse, refreshing actually. Similar to Get Off My Lawn, tho…
I know the feeling but it was the right thing to do
Very class move by saying your peace and moved on.. Great channel.
Amazing video. Thanks so much from an east coast Fl native 70 years.
I appreciate that coming from a long-time Floridian. Thanks.
Hey John, another great day on the water. You certainly did the right thing by moving to a better spot. Some people are just angry by nature. Like they say, theres plenty of fish in the sea. Tight lines my friend.
people always say “if you woulda asked nicely”. well he did, so good on ya mate for moving
You handled the whole situation perfectly John. Good move.
He asked nicely. You did the right thing.
I think you were right in with how you handled it. I try and reason with them and make the same points the way you did. Just not worth the effort with so many other fishable socks out there. Great content and catches as always!
Thanks for the kind words about the content and I appreciate your input!
Some people own the water some don't. This man owns all water and you will go thirsty. Fish on!
Best said comment here and it went over everyone’s head, reason with reasonable people but no quarter for tyrants! I’d have been there till dark.
If you don't want people fishing your dock, don't live on the water and have a dock. You were 100 % right and handled it nicely though. 👍
i think you handled that situation perfectly, even though you had all right to fish there but it's like you said, you can related and as it turned you, it was for the better.
Enjoy the course and good luck with the upcoming fluke season!
He asked really nicely I would have moved on also. Great job
Right call to move even though you are within your rights to be there. Being courteous to property owner and respecting their wishes makes you the better person and avoid unnecessary harassment. You are a true ambassador to the rest of us fishers
You did the right thing...no need for nonsense confrontation
I think you showed restraint and respect. Although that man has no legal ground to stand on and I highly doubt there is a big grouper nursery located under his specific dock he did ask nicely and that is rare. I'd like to think I would leave but if I'm honest I would initially leave although if I had no luck nearby I would go back. I would tell him that if the first fish I caught was a juvenile grouper I would move on again. I would also offer him half of what I caught under his dock if he wanted.
The one i love is when the come yelling you're catching my fish.
I landed a huge tarpon on that red rod in the kayak on Monday. Stripers no problem!
You did the right thing Mr. Skinner.
Echoing what others say, he doesn't own the water or the fish, and in some cases could be ticketed for harassment. But he could become violent, not worth it for any fish. You made the right move, got rewarded with some nice fillets. Kind of a win-win!
Agree…he doesn’t know the laws, but meant well and was respectful - good call.
You did the right thing by leaving, he was nice about it, but it’s not worth getting into a serious altercation over
Good move. You tried to reason with him and didn't let it escalate. You never know if someone is having a bad day, they might do something stupid.
The guy was course, but polite, all in all.. You did right.
You did good with the person that didn't want you to fish his dock. Having said that the person does not own the water.
Amongst your 140k subscribers there must be a member of the Florida Bar. Step up guys! Our guy needs competent advice.
Pick and choose your battles. You can fish the waters around the dock, but he did ask politely to not fish it, so good call.
Love these sheepshead series; makes me want to pick up my rod
Good call all around honestly, he had legitimate concerns and you waived off amicably. That was as good a result as any. I fish up here in Elias' area and docks and sheepshead are the standard, you just have to mentally prepare yourself every trip that you might get into it with a dock owner.
Thanks for that input!
I have heard bluefish are being caught, but on what and where? Lol, same baits we use in Carolina, gottca s and stingsilvers?
