When I showed this movie to my dad, he said he didn't like it because "the story is serious and serious stories shouldn't be animated." It still disappoints me that he thought that because I think it's one of the most beautiful films I've ever seen, animated or otherwise.
Then tell him that when first the animation appeared wasn't even meant for children.

Watership down is animated and it's completely serious. Not all cartoons are for children, especially anime.
A lot of people see animation as a childish medium which is sad. If you like more serious animated films I recommend The Breadwinner.

He did come back but he went into exile at 40yrs old then returned to Egypt at the age of 80 yrs old to free his people.
It was very sad. But eventually, Pharaoh, learned not to mess with God and his people. Moses mother definitely did the right thing. But on another note, when his mother sings in Hebrew, gives me chills.

I've watched the movie a thousand times, and it still gives me the chills. Gosh I will never get tired of it. My sister and I are always doing that dramatic duet between Moses and Rameses, The Plagues. The music just captures me and the message sent through it is amazing. The power of God is never ending 😌😌😌😌
Akosua Agyemang Everything about this movie is huge. The music, the drama, the visuals... everything. It's one of the most overlooked animated films of the 90s, and at the same time it's one of the best. I think it's safe to say that it's better than both The Ten Commandments and Exodus: Gods and Kings. The former is way too long and full of unnecessary elements, and the other goes out of its way to alienate the audience this story most appeals to by suggesting that they are stupid, not to mention the acting is pretty bland (which is unfortunate, because I've generally liked Ridley Scott's films). This film has told the story the best, in my opinion.
One of the best things about it is the interactions between its main characters. The conflict between Moses and Rameses was so emotional in this film. It's heartbreaking to watch them drift apart because it's established that they genuinely love each other in the first act. Unfortunately both of them contribute to the rift; Moses is sticking to his destiny, whereas Rameses is letting stubbornness and pride prevent him from finding a reasonable compromise. I love how there's this one small moment later on in the film between them where they reminisce about old times, and you can tell that they still love each other. Unfortunately, Rameses refuses to back down to remain strong despite Moses' pleas for him to relent, and the consequences come down on him like a ton of bricks. Later on Moses is shown grieving for his brother; that series of scenes really got to me the first time I saw it.
The music is also great; I still get chills every time I listen to it. This particular song is beautiful; it sets the entire tone of the story, and you can feel the pain the Hebrews are going through. "The Plagues" is equally huge; it perfectly conveys the gravity of the situation on both sides of the conflict. "Through Heaven's Eyes" and "When You Believe" are by far the most uplifting songs I've ever heard. Stephen Sondheim is a genius, plain and simple.
I also love how they chose to depict God's voice in the story. Having a mix of voices come together really made sense, and having Val Kilmer's voice slightly stand out more also made the experience more powerful. It wasn't overdramatic like in The Ten Commandments, and it wasn't scary like in Exodus: Gods and Kings; it was very peaceful and calm, an overall better feeling.

Old Testament story adaptions are relatively "safer" than New Testament adaptions, simply because Christians of all denominations, Muslims, Jews, and other religions who believe in the Old Testament can enjoy them - the OT is the base of the biblical tree. When we get to the New Testament, Jews, Christians, Muslims, and the rest branch off and go their separate ways.

I definitely agree with you, I just watched that movie two months ago, Just once, but I’m definitely planning on watching it again, By the way I really liked the plagues sequence, because It kind of gave character depth between the conflicts of Moses and Ramses (which they were my favorite characters in the movie).

I love how God is portrayed in the movie. He isn't some vengeful and wrathful Lord of All, But a soft speaking Father of Creation who knows when to be humble and when to smite down his foes.

In Judaism It's actually a common thing to sing out prayers to God. That's why all the psalms were structured for song. It's beautiful because in western Christianity you don't get this idea of singing your prayer. This song does a great job capturing that principle of Jewish prayer. It's amazing the impact of this song!

The trumpet at the beginning was just.... I can't even explain to you how well it was played. It was just so gorgeous it gave me goosebumps.
I'm really not religious but this is one of the best movies. It's a true masterpiece from the music (!!) to the dialogue and scenes to the great message the story delivers. Whether you take it as more than just a story or not, it's really emotional and great. 10/10. Wish there would still be movies like this and I'm glad to have grown up with movies like this.

Because its contradictory and doesn't make any sense. (This is coming from someone who has to study it every day) I used to be a christian, but once I started to read the bible more I realized how much it repeats and contradicts. Religion aside, this story is about a God, his people, and the legendary events they went through. I thank Dreamworks, the designers, and the people who remembered this story all these generations for putting this together for us to appreciate for a long time.
Still the best Dreamworks movie ever made. Spirit is a close second.

Why is music such a powerful tool for emotion? I am not religious, but I am culturally aware, it means, that I know what happens in the bible. I am not just ignorant. But this made chills go down my spine. Especially the first chorus.

But this song is so beautifully orchestrated and done that I honestly felt like I was gonna bawl the whole time like a baby when I heard this. It is just so powerful, and omfg... just thinking about it's beauty tears me up. This song is very well done, indeed.

I haven't watched this movie in ages but I love it sooooo much it is literally my favorite movie of all time. Not just because it is awesome, but because you can feel the spirit watching it. God truly lives and loves us.
As a Pagan who used to be Catholic this movie holds a soft spot in my heart (even if I did and still do doubt the churches teachings). I’m still traumatized from having it shoved down my throat but the story of Moses had always been my favorite (and personally that’s all I cared about and still do). Anyone who responds with Bible quotes will be reported for harassment and promptly blocked.
As a Protestant Christian from Mexico (a small majority in its right but no where your stuggle) this story brought me to God and I am at least happy it brought you some comfort. That is all I'm sure my and Jesus's heart wants for you. Sry to bother.

Except not all African countries had black people. People around Mediterranean belong to the Caucassian/Europoid/white "race". White does not mean Germans or Swedish (a.k.a. paler shade of skin), but also Arabs, Greeks, Slavs, Hungarians and all kinds of people.
Also, I find it funny how you see Egyptians in this movie as black, when they are clearly Mediterranean. If this movie portrayed Nubians (who were black), you would see the difference between them. I know people in my country, Slovakia (which has no historical black population, as there was no slavery, therefore you can say easily determine people with black ancestry, because one of their parents or grandparents was black), who have the same skin tone as Egyptians and Hebrews in this movie, yet nobody would ever call them black. That´s because we understand there are many skin colors among whites as there are among blacks (you have people in Africa who have literally black skin...does that make them something different because traditional image of their "race" has brown skin?).

Why do people feel the need to point out "I am an Atheist, but..." who cares? If you love the song, does it matter what you are? I know its a false hope because there will always be people who dont care if you want them to coexist. Or they believe their belief (by belief I mean religious & non religious) is the begin all, end all. I just posted my comment to show people you dont need to mock/bash someones beliefs because it doesnt fit your standards. As long as your belief isnt to kill a person or sacrifice a dog, then it isnt harming anything. If you belief doesnt involve harming another life source, then it shouldnt be judged as if it does. I have seen so much hatred between believers and non believers of MANY beliefs. When in fact, why would you put so much damn energy into destroying the same thing you are against? Why is it worthy of your time? The only answer to that question is "you are not sure about your own life style or beliefs, so in order to find your way, you take it out on another belief, because it makes you feel apart of something." There are radical haters and I dont see how hating on a belief or mocking a belief is any different than discriminating on skin color/sexual preference/social status. There shouldnt be laws telling people how to behave, there shouldnt be laws telling people how to be adults. It should be common sense. :)

The bible is not a bedtime story - it's GOD'S manual, guide and instruction to us - as well his means for us to get to know him.

i still get chills and shaky in the voice when i sing this. this movie ill never get tired and im not even religious but this movie was so powerful and moving. the music was powerful and phenomenal and still is.
Not only is the music in this movie nothing short of beautiful, but the animation style is amazing! We need more movies like this, and the Bible has plenty of amazing stories to offer.

I was baptized when I was a baby but my family never raised me to be a Christian. But my dad would tell me that people who lived a good and honest life will go to Heaven, and bad people went to Hell after they died. When I grew older, people kept telling me that only true Christians ascend to Heaven and everyone else is damned to Hell. I never believed it because my dad told me that The Lord is merciful and no matter how many mistakes you make, He will forgive you. I started going to church with my grandparents and I really enjoy the sermons. While I'm not Christian, I believe in God and Jesus Christ 😇
bless your soul, im not very old (16) but the Lord being merciful no matter the how many mistakes you make is something I heard when I was a lot younger. it makes me a little sad because I want to say my dad told me this but with the way he talks about people i cant be sure. but i know he is like that cause of his parents where very strict on these kinds of things. i find it really nice that you go to church with your grandparents! also not sure if you will see this but i have a question but im not sure you will be able to answer it. but is it weird that by the time i was 12 probably 13 i started going to the adult service instead of the youth service because it didn't feel right anymore it never felt like the message was clear and i stopped enjoying going there. so i went to the adult service and it just always made sense and i felt happy going again. but my cousin that i also go to church with followed me for a bit to the adult service cause she didn't want to be alone but she said she would never really understand what the pastor was talking about, and i think my uncle doesn't believe that i understand or something and thing i should go to the youth service again. is there something wrong here? (also have a good life, your comment made me really happy)
I don't think it was weird that you switched from going to the youth services to the adult services, I never went to the youth services because I could understand what the pastors said. Plus I was 13 when I first started going to different churches (I'm 15 now) and I didn't want to be the only teen surrounded by little kids xD. But yeah, I'm not sure why your uncle thinks you don't understand what the pastors say. Sorry I can't answer that ;-; ;-;. But I'm happy that my comment made you happy :D

This movie was my entire childhood. I watched it pretty much every Sabbath. And I still love it, I rewatched it again recently (for nostalgia and because I was listening to the songs so much) and it still made me happy and excited just as it used to. Ah, how I wish they could keep making movies like this...but I guess Biblical or Christian movies don't do well for whatever reason...ah well...
