The reason Esmerelda chose Phoebus in the end was because Quasimodo saw her as "heaven", Frollo saw her as "hell", but Phoebus saw her as she was, a human being.
More impressive is knowing that the voice actor for Frollo was Tony Jay who was in his mid-60s. Ironically enough he died due to complications of a surgical procedure in removing a benign tumor from his lungs. :/
It's beautiful that the movie doesn't quite go after the church, but rather it clearly shows this character as lying to himself and God, he does these things with no justification but he justifies himself.
As a catholic it actually scared me the more I watched. The church is my safe place, my sanctuary, and watching him I'm like- w h a t People like him do exist and some turn to the church for genuine help and others use it as excuse and seeing him let his pride disguised as faith take over him, I felt chills. He was a unique villain in Disney for sure and I love/hate it
Unfortunately it doesn’t quite portray the truth because the church would have absolutely covered up for 90% of Frollo’s actions. I wish they’d been just that little bit braver and kept him as a clergyman rather than making him a judge, but this is still a very brave critique of religion considering the time period it was made. As an atheist, I can understand the caution the writers had to take with this given the social and political environment at the time. The church has almost always managed to remain above criticism, but thankfully, that is changing in recent years.
@@tommyl.dayandtherunaways820 your acting like every church is like that anf the one in the movie was a place of guidance and Sanctuary for all not just believers and you do have these individuals that uses God's name in vain to move their own beliefs and worldviews to make a better world for themselves and achieve more power
The prayer in the background is great because its the Confiteor which is a prayer of confession and he's basically confessing to Mary about his guilt and sins of impurity about his thoughts about Esmeralda. Bravo Disney, I miss this era of Disney.
+dookeland8 He wasn't actually confessing his sin, more like denying it. Confiteor is a Catholic song for forgiveness, humanity, and ultimately admitting one own faults. He went against this by claiming superiority and blaming everyone else (including God) instead of him.
Frollo: It's not my fault! Chorus: Mea Culpa (My fault) Frollo: I'm not to blame! Chorus: Mea Culpa Frollo: It is the gypsy girl the witch who set this flame! Chorus: Mea Extremi Culpa (My greivous fault) Frollo: It's not my fault if in God's plan he made the Devil so much stronger than a man! Frollo refuses to accept those faults. He blamed his feeling to Esmeralda, and to God, for creating sin.
Kadri Aalto FINALLY! Some else who completely despises Hans for being the so called "villain" I would have liked him much more if he where just some random dude that Anna liked >.
little Maleficent Basically people on the internet keep going on about how Disney is going to kid friendly everything they get making it all sun shine and rainbows.
Ella Kelso Because the Heroes control the movies. The hero gets the girl in the end and they all live happily ever after. And what do the villains get? (Great songs) after all they play a big part in the movie. They have to get some appreciation. #VillainLivesMatter
The best villains in all of literature, mythology, cinema, and television are the ones who think they're doing good. They're the best because they actually exist.
Karen Laurvick Rasputin wasn't really someone who thought he was doing good, though. He was a womanizer, alcoholic and conman and pretty much accepted those facts and just lived his life out being a scumbag.
Karen Laurvick Russian Orthodox "monk", which is just a sect of Catholicism. He was eating up the Czar's/Czarina's money "healing" their son with mysticism. Also had a lot of footing in their circle and influence over them. Nicholas was a pretty meek person.
What i love about Frollo is how he is not some guy with super powers. He is a man with sexual desires that he knows he can't have. It kills and guilts him that he knows he shouldn't feel the way he does but he can't stop being attracted to her and wanting her. So of course the only way to stop it is kill and destroy. The most "evil " here is, human nature.
I think it's less "human nature" and more the fault of his pride. He was too proud to admit that he was a sinner, and blamed Esmeralda for "tempting him". He uses the excuse that God must want it to happen, thinking that his response is natural and that anyone in his position would do the same. Really it's his own inability to look at himself and realize that it's his fault, not hers, and that he has to be the one to change.
Lyrics in Latin and in English during the song: Et tibit Pater (And to you, Father) Quia peccavi nimis (That I have sinned) Cogitatione (In thought) Verbo et opere (In word and deed) Mea culpa (Through my fault) Mea culpa (Through my fault) Mea maxima culpa (Through my most griveous fault) Mea culpa (Through my fault) Mea culpa (Through my fault) Mea maxima culpa (Through my most griveous fault) Kyrie Eleison (Lord have mercy) Kyrie Eleison (Lord have mercy) Kyrie Eleison (Lord have mercy) The latin adds so much power and sense to this song, and i just love it. Hellfire must be one of the biggest masterpieces of Disney and one of the most awesome and frightening songs that i ever heard. Such a shame Hunchback of Notre Dame is sooo underrated :C (don't get me wrong, i really love Frozen, Tangled and Brave, but this movie its in another level...)
Kyrie Eleison is actually a Greek phrase. It's commonly used in the chants at the Greek church, which are spoken in ancient Greek, and it is often repeated in our prayers. Kyrie in modern Greek actually means “Sir”, or “Lord” when it's told during a prayer, and Eleison means “Have mercy on us” (Eleos = mercy).
Ahh.. good old Disney. Good old dark dark Disney. Oh whatever happened to the gothic beauty? The sinister plots? The darkened twists? The unsung romance? The dim demise of villains? I miss the old Disney...
Now it would mean making a plot where a more liberal-type of character was the villain. A feminist as the villain? Gasp, that wouldn't sit well with the audience (sigh)
ah yes, The Old Disney that cloaks Sexual desire and religion in children's movies :D so much you can pick out in adulthood when you watch them again when you miss it as a kid
MinockerSpanichle Feminists are not villains though. That would just piss a lot of people off and mock the women's suffrage movement...and most women in general. There could be some serious lawsuits and charges. You want a more liberal, modern villain? Use President Putin. Or George W. Bush. Then there's Tony Abbot. Lets not forget ISIS either. To make a good villain, you have to humanize them. The scariest shit of all is when you realize a villain is just like everyone else.
Frostbitten Fae Religious people are not villains either only for being religious, yet Frollo was fantastic. You can be a feminist and be a villain. Is feminism itself villainy? That's been up for debate since it came about.
I never forgot, it's my favourite song and I listen to it at least once a week and re watch the movie at least once a month, it's just my all time favourite
could've been intentional by Disney as well as a snake is used to represent the Devil in the Garden Of Eden.. and clearly here Frollo is trying to deny his sin, deny the evil in him, deny the devil in him, hence the snake/tambourine noises.
This is probably the darkest movie Disney has ever made, especially so in the era it came out. Think about every other 90's Disney movie, none have themes or songs as dark as is one! There are a lot of them in this movie I didn't understand a kid, now I do and it is down right dark and creepy! Cool song but man that is intense for a G rated movie!
Savages- Pocahontas, Kill the beast - Beauty and the beast, Poor Unfortunate Souls - The little mermaid, all three are incredibly dark in their subject matter.
Some are just too fun or don't seem nearly as evil as this even if they are. Such as the people ready to kill the beast, ursula basically telling us she's screwed so many over into those monster things we see b4 Ariel enters, etc. Pocahuntas-Savages is quite literal, but it is about two different "races/species" the way they act, it's not so personal and the sides just more misunderstand poor actions than anything. Scar-Be Prepared if you remove the hyena jokes (which I feel like was done to make it seem less dark) has a guy basically taking an army and his own wish to rule to kill the monarchy and make it a dictatorship with marching soldiers and that imagery is way more creepy than it's taken for "because it's animals." And in a way, it's sorta true, as all it takes here is one man, creepy back imagery of red men in coats, a dancing flame, and Frollo to sing of his wrongdoings he is consumed by but wants mercy and is going to do it anyway.
You know when I was a little girl and I saw this for the first time this was my favorite song just because it was dark and I loved the music itself, now that I'm older and I went to a Catholic school and I know what he's singing about...It's just makes me like the song more because now I know the understanding of the song. You know what I mean?
TheUltimate Shipper The true meaning of this song is that Frollo is basically saying that Esmeralda can be his girl or burn in the flames of hell. and that's the darkness of this song in a nutshell.
Yeah, and he wants to burn her because when you become a person of the Church your not allowed to have intercourse, like if you become a priest or someone higher than that, you basically devote yourself to God and God alone....
My favorite part is when the red-cloaked figures appear after Frollo says his desire is "turning him to sin". I looked it up, and they're singing "Mea culpa" or "Through my fault" in Latin. Meanwhile, Frollo's attempting to argue and say he's not to blame for his lust. I've always thought they represent all his sins, and that when he sees them, he's facing his own damnation and trying to escape it. Thus he sounds so desperate.
I like that they counterpoint this with Heaven's Light in the film. It really demonstrates how much Frollo has really fallen to the dark side and how some men truly do vehemently loathe the objects of their affection, whereas Quasimodo truly loves Esmeralda and it's that love that allows her to let her go, unlike Frollo who would literally rather see her dead than with anyone else.
I can remember being very confused watching this song play out as a child, I really had no idea what it was about. I just kept wondering "Who the heck is this Maria he keeps singing to?! There's no characters called maria in this movie!"
That is pretty funny. ^_^ You must've been raised in a non Catholic neighborhood (nothing wrong with that... just rather funny in a way). As a young teen, I knew he was singing about confessing his sins. This actually became one of my favorite songs to listen to as a kid and teen. Very few Disney songs at that time had that effect. This song was actually in a middle school play at the school I was attaining at that time, since my neighborhood was predominately Catholic. Public schools today wouldn't dare do plays like this anymore due to the whole PC mentality taking over and focusing too much on exams. Schools can't even explore deeper-darker side of human nature, because it gives kids "bad" impressions and ideas. >_> Some schools go as far as to say you can't even say "no" or "don't" to kids anymore. One can only use positive language, which is rather confusing to use around kids with disabilities and/or disorders.>_>
The thing about Frollo is that while we have villians like Hades, Ursula, etc.(Which are very characterized and satirical). Frollo is so realistic and true to what a human can be that its terrifying
This song right here has to be one of the most powerful scores in any Disney Film (excluding Star Wars). It invokes so many emotions; envy, anger, fear and lust. Lust is the big one, as this movie was rated G. This score alone should have made it PG. However it's sung so perfectly, hence why Frollo is one of my all time favorite movie villains; he believes he's doing good yet he's committing several acts of evil, drowning in his own hypocrisy. At times he's calculating and charming but other times he's cruel and sadistic. The perfect movie villain.
***** Let's not forget that the setting of the play--all took place within a week. Romeo and Juliet married within the first few days of knowing one another. (So yeah, I absolutely despise when young people say they want a romance like Romeo and Juliet...)
joshua miller obviously when people say they want a romeo and juliet romance they dont mean the deaths and misunderstandings, but their actual week long affair was so messed up that you would never want an exact copy of their love. that is why it bugs me when people say they had a "perfect love" or "true love". at best it was a mutual crush. no need to get so defensive over it. (also, romeo and juliet was a romance, but it wasnt written to express the love. it was to show how conflict over petty things can tear families apart. i hate when people romanticize it so much that it seems like romance was the only point of writing it.)
I don't know why people are saying they feel bad for Frollo and that he's not a bad guy. In the first 10 minutes of the movie we see him: -kill a woman -attempt to kill a baby -lock that baby up in Notre Dame for all of its formative years and early adulthood He's also seen ordering the torture of prisoners when he's introduced to Phoebus, and he also burns down all of Paris so he can find a piece of underage poontang. This is not a good guy.
***** There was a book? Could you please tell me where I might find it? I'd rather like to read it, especially since I didn't have a clue that this was a book.
for me, it's several things: first of all, I don't believe in the terms 'virtuous' or 'wicked', because those seem too relative and stupid terms to me. I only hate villains when all you can say about them is that they are 'evil'. That's a bland and pathetic character. Frollo is more complex, in that he contemplates what he's doing, but constantly tries to prove that he's doing the right thing. The further he goes, the more he has to prove, so eventually you'll get to kill the people who don't believe you. It's the downward spiral that makes the character fascinating for me. Second, he does genuinly believe he's doing the right thing. Especially now, it's important to keep such themes in a movie, because of the religious fanaticism that's going on. In short: he's not evil, but neither is he good. He's a character with his own story that, unfortunately, doesn't end well.
Im a devout Catholic and i can say for certain this movie terrified me when i was little. This song didn't help. I love it now. There is a mix of Christian ideology and actor themes that go over children's heads. That's what I like about watching movies from when I was kid again. I see everything I didn't before
+Mono Nonny Then again how could you? He is such a multidimensional character, torn between his lust and his religion, knowing by his Catholic logic (at the time) that if he wanted to "be with her" then he would be burned in hell for eternity. He is a truly amazing character, my personal favorite Disney villain.
THIS IS WHAT YOU DONT DO Me: *Singing in Latin* Person who leads church: wow where did you learn that Me: well I learned it from a song about Hellfire and a 50 year old trying to get someone who is 16 Person who leads church: O.o
Kingdom080500 I know... "Hunchback of Notre Dame": A story so dark that even Disney was like "We need singing gargoyles in this... and a lot of hope that kids won't realize what's going on until they're adults..."
It always cracks me up that someone comes in while he’s singing. That’s so relatable. Singing and/or acting something out and then someone walks in on you
elmakarov It's in the beginning but it's also playing in the background throughout his song. It's to show what a hypocrite he is and how he is no where near as good a Christian as he professes- the prayer is about admitting fault and taking responsibility for ones actions and desires, but Frollo instead is blaming Esmeralda, the Devil, and finally even God himself because he can't reconcile his horniness with his delusions of righteousness and moral perfection. It's also a prayer of humility so saying he is "so much purer than the common, vulgar, weak licentious crowd" is another thing that damns him.
Jonathan Campbell I'm not even going to go into how vain hypocrisy seems to be the order of the day amongst most "Christian" crowds, but I will say this: Frollo at this point is going mad with desire due to his ignorant upbringing with they would drill into everyone how women are the source of evil and "you can't be a serve the church and love another at the same time" due to some ugly bastard not being able to get laid and so edited the bible accordingly. What that mini-rant has to do with the film is this: Frollo went mad thinking he was being corrupted by evil spirits when it simply boiled down to his never being taught how to properly accept that humans can and do get urges as part of who and what they are. As a species, we'd go extinct if we _didn't_ have the urges (yeah I know, back then they didn't know that and blah blah lack of education blah, but there you have it).
Ahh, back when, instead of 3D models, movies had beautiful 2D animation! And back when you actually enjoyed having the villain`s song stuck in your head, even when it had a (very) weird meaning! What has become of you, Disney? Why did you change? Why did you bend and break? When Hellfire turned into Let it Go, did it feel the same?
This is one of Disney's darkest villain songs, and I love it. They really took a risk, not just with the song but the story material they chose as well. It's a very dark story with some pretty adult themes and I can happily say with age I have only come to love this film more and more over time
I agree. I think what I like most about this movie is the darker, more adult themes. It shows the darker side of religion, how it can lead to someone becoming perhaps more evil than they were before. It shows that it's not all "Praise God, love God, treat everybody kindly."
It talks about hypocrites like Frollo in the bible he is an evil man who blamed God for his own weakness. He's the man who stands before the throne thinking his own purity will save him, but in the end he was the same vulgar man as the ones he was more "pure" than.
To me Frollo displays what I view as wrong with some of my fellow Christians nowadays. Namely how they think that they are superior over others because of it or some other nonsense like consistently telling people who are different they should go to hell (it is a constant source of annoyance for me). Some should be directed to the story of the stoning of the adulteress to make a point (which is the common reference) but others I think should be directed to Luke 12:48 where the Good Lord says. "Much is given much be required". Overall there is a reason why pride is one of the Seven Deadly Sins (though I think all religions at some point or another are guilty of that). (yikes that was longer than I intended it to be)
Have you been living under a rock? In today's western society, religious people especially Christians are constanly mocked, ridiculed and even opressed by the media, films, TV and by goverments which are now controled by the secular anti-religion establishment. There are people that are being fired form job simply for their Christian beliefs. But this is not really surprising, for the Bible wisely foretold that the persecution of Christians would happen, especially in the end times in which we live now.
Blames Esmeralda, the devil, and even God instead of acknowledging "I should refuse to act on my urges instead of using temptation as an excuse." This is the kind of thinking which blackened his soul, and I like how we have this look into his thoughts (and how relatable it is-we all have thoughts we don't want responsibility for).
Fairy tales do not tell us that dragons exist, but instead how to defeat them. Thank you for sharing this song. Such a terrifying realistic villain. They exist in the world.
Initially Frollo was blaming Esmeralda but at the "...God have mercy on me" and the way he turned toward the wall. Even how he suddenly opened his eyes and said "but she will..." clearly shows that he knew he was very much at fault in the trouble.
Is it pathetic that it took me till my late teens to figure out he was talking about lust? I knew this song was weird as a kid but I never put two and two together. It is one of the best villain songs.
Now that I understand the Latin lyrics at the beginning from the chanting, this makes the song so much more meaningful, and so epic and IRONIC. Thank you!
Very familiar song. When I can't find my car keys, I am frequently heard to mutter "I'll find them. I'll find them if I have to burn down all of Paris!" Which is odd, since I'm nowhere near Paris. Or France, for that matter.
Is anyone else impressed by how much expression Tony Jay managed to put into this song? It's even more obvious when you listen to it without seeing the animation, because there's no visual to distract us from his voice. But then again, the visuals match perfectly with his vocal inflections. For example, when he sings "like fire" for the first time, he gasps out the word "fire", which works remarkably well with how the animated Frollo is shown recoiling from the fireplace at the same time.
This is such a dark Disney movie; probably the darkest. It has themes of lust and sin, murder, and prejudice; not to mention near rape-like situations. However, these themes make the movie perfect. It's definitely my favorite Disney movie.
*Minister Frollo! This video has been disliked!* What? *It's been disliked 25+ times, and they're gone.* But how, I-Never mind! Get out, you idiot! I'll find them, I'll find them if I have to burn down all of RUclips! Hellfire! Dark Fire! Now Dislikes, it's *YOUR* turn! Choose me or the Fire. Now Like or You will *BURN!!!* God have mercy on them....God have mercy on me! But they will Like or Theeeeyyy Wiiiiillll *BUUUUUURRRRRRNNNN!!*
I personally love how he addresses her retention before his, truly believing his religion and his post to be more superior than her pure heart. Religion plays such a big role, from Frollo’s twisted ideals to Esmeralda’s heartfelt songs, it is a very mature theme that needs to be shown more often.
I like that Frollo is self-aware and he prays for God to have mercy on him as well as her. It ain't gonna do much good but at least he's thinking of it.
This isn't my favorite Disney villain song (Poor Unfortunate Souls holds that title), but I don't see how anyone can argue that it isn't the best. Unfortunate Souls and Be Prepared are both fantastic songs, but Hellfire is easily the ballsiest song Disney has ever done, and likely will ever do.
I personally prefer The Other Side (Friends On The Other Side?) from The Princess and The Frog, but I have to agree with you. Be Prepared, Poor Unfortunate Souls, and Hellfire are BY FAR the 3 greatest Disney Villain songs.
Omg, I totally agree with you. My favourite villain song (and my go to Disney song) is Be Prepared, but you just cannot beat this masterpiece. The visuals, orchestra, Tony Jay’s voice. You can’t beat it.
This song is so good! It’s so creepy and disturbing, yet enchanting and haunting! It has this weird eerie charm to it that even though the subjects involved in this song are disturbing you can’t help but love it and become enchanted by it. And another thing I love about this song is that unlike a lot of Disney villain songs it doesn’t make me feel like I should root for the villain or I think the villain is way cooler or more cunning than the hero. This song brilliantly shows how horrible this villain truly is and doesn’t make me root for him at all. But that doesn’t take away from the fact that this song is ridiculously good, haunting, powerful and just a straight up masterpiece!
funny thing, virgin didn't originally mean well, what it does now, back during the time of when the first bible would of been written, virgin meant a young lady. Mary was a young lady, and that is why it would seem impossible for her to have a child, for she is so young.
Michael Joesph That would mean she is about 16, while joseph would be most likely in his twenties. remember, human life span has more than doubled since the times of jesus.
I love that when he says God have mercy on her, and then God, have mercy on me, he means two completely different things. The first he's basically saying she's irredeemable and will face God's judgment when her time eventually comes. The second he's pleading to God to remove her as a temptation for him. So, he's basically saying forgive her sins, but kill her so that I can't be tempted anymore. The person who wrote this song is brilliant.
How is this a kids movie again Srsly tho The song is literally about a Catholic man who will kill someone if they don't have sex with them Don't get me wrong, I still love the movie, and think it's amazing... but today it would be scrapped. 0_0
that's why the older disney stuff was best... people (parents especially) nowadays get far too offended and butthurt now. this is easily one of Disney's best songs, and it's sad they try to distance themselves from it (and even more sad that an amazing song like this wouldn't exist if the movie was made now)
***** That is true, however, he keeps talking about her skin and her hair and how beautiful stuff, which (to me at least) makes it seem like he's just freaked out about how he has a boner and doesn't know how to react to it since he's a holy man. I mean, don't get me wrong, I understand your meaning of love and how he wants her to himself and no one else, BUT you have to understand that how he speaks out about her physically, it kind of seems like he's screaming and scared of how he has a boner for her and doesn't know what to do. haha Just to lighten the mood, my boyfriend watched this movie with me one night and he paused it to just look at me and laugh and "sing" that he is afraid and doesn't know how to feel about how he has a boner for Esmerellda and how he is a holy man. It made me laugh for quite awhile since he was standing up right and trying to imitate Esmerellda. Anyhow, This movie is great and I wish that movies like this were made more often instead of parents freaking out about how many "adult things" are put into a children's movie. They're going to learn it in life anyway, why not at least have them a little more prepared instead of having everything thrown at them at once?
He's not saying she needs to bang him or die, he's a devout catholic who presumably never married or anything because he considers himself to be above temptation. Then comes along this one girl, who happens to be a gypsy, a people he has always despised. And for some reason, this one gypsy girl he can't get out of his head. He's fallen for her and has never dealt with temptation before. He just also happens to be a cruel bastard, but he doesn't believe he is because everything he does he believes he does for god. Ridding the world of what he believed were a bad people. Naturally he is confused, but the message definitely is not, "get on my fun parts or die".
One of the darkest movies and darkest songs of Disney. How it mentions hell, demons, the devil, God, heaven, angels. Sort of the topics that would be sorta taboo in a children’s movie. But I remember ever since I was 5 this was a movie that I would rewatch on VHS countless times. It definitely was unlike any Disney film, it felt real as far as the villain, how society acts towards differences. Truly a wonderful classic
They need to make a live action movie. I have a casting in mind, tell me if you agree. Quasimodo - Martin Freeman Frollo - Alan Rickman Esmeralda - Mila Kunis Phoebus - Chris Hemsworth or Dan Stevens The clopin - Jared Leto
hellfire is the best disney villain song to exist the latin words adds a nice touch and theres a lot of representations and a lot of meanings behind every scene
Ahh. I think I'll like watching old Disney movies even better now that I'm older. I know the original, creepy and tragic stories that the movies were based on and I can catch all the adult themes in the movies that I missed as a kid.
Walt Disney: * looks at this * His assistant : Sir, are we sure this is suitable for kids? Walt: Walt: I mean, its got lust, burnings, hell. Of course it is!
"It's not my fault, if in God's plan, he made the Devil so Much Stronger the a man" i don't know how there brains can come out with such perfect expressions, it really brings joy to my ears
I just saw this today, and I can definitely say this song (along with the main theme) is one of the powerful songs I've ever heard in a movie. It strikes hard into your soul, which I think is what this type of choir music tries to do
I'd honestly rather see another studio do it because Disney would definitely tone it down. If they feel the need to tone down Aladdin, I don't want to even know how dull Frollo would be. However if they could somehow manage to do it right, with such darkness as it has, it'd easily be one of the most ambitious, creepy, well done movies of all time.
"Be mine or you will BURN!"
That would make a great Valentine's card!
More convenient if her name is Esmeralda :). Plus, it helps if they love this musical.
Yes. Yes it would.
I love fire
I’m pretty much a yandere
Thanks for the idea!!!
Yup totally!
XD
The reason Esmerelda chose Phoebus in the end was because Quasimodo saw her as "heaven", Frollo saw her as "hell", but Phoebus saw her as she was, a human being.
Carmella York that's deep man
and in the book, he saw her get hanged with no remorse :)
@Christian Aguiare in that horrendous sequel?
@@IfYouSeeMyOldCommentsNoYouDont I can't understand :/ (I'm not talking very well English lol)
Beautiful answer
Never let Frollo near Fifty Shades of Grey or we will be doomed.
Or internet porn sites, he'd probably pass out.
+Nicole Bonnett Best comment ever XD
+Lucie Klímová Thankyou :)
Yup, he's got really big sexual issues...
HAHAHAHAHA
Jesus, he has a pair of lungs. That last note was like 15 seconds and he didn't noticeably take a breath throughout most of the song.
J_Squatch dude I just did it
More impressive is knowing that the voice actor for Frollo was Tony Jay who was in his mid-60s. Ironically enough he died due to complications of a surgical procedure in removing a benign tumor from his lungs. :/
The power of Tony Jay
Juci Shockwave precisely
@Juci Shockwave Oh, now my friends and I feel bad about making jokes about Frollo’s lungs😬

It's beautiful that the movie doesn't quite go after the church, but rather it clearly shows this character as lying to himself and God, he does these things with no justification but he justifies himself.
YESSSS
the church in the entire film was telling frollo he's insane and offering sanctuary to a non believer
As a catholic it actually scared me the more I watched. The church is my safe place, my sanctuary, and watching him I'm like- w h a t
People like him do exist and some turn to the church for genuine help and others use it as excuse and seeing him let his pride disguised as faith take over him, I felt chills.
Exactly, he is a man consumed by desire and using every justification in the book to shift the blame. What a song to illustrate this phenomenon.
It was actually quite a movie in a dark era.
@@Normacly It was such a great irony that Confiteor was playing as he tried to justify his sin
"It's not my fault!
I'm not to blame!"
Frollo: It's not my fault!
Chorus: Mea Culpa (My fault)
Frollo: I'm not to blame!
Chorus: Mea Culpa
Frollo: It is the gypsy girl the witch who set this flame!
Chorus: Mea Extremi Culpa (My greivous fault)
Frollo: It's not my fault if in God's plan he made the Devil so much stronger than a man!
Frollo refuses to accept those faults. He blamed his feeling to Esmeralda, and to God, for creating sin.
I wish Disney would start making darker movies again with awesome villains! :D Hans sucked as did the duke of weaseltown.
Kadri Aalto FINALLY! Some else who completely despises Hans for being the so called "villain" I would have liked him much more if he where just some random dude that Anna liked >.

IKR those disney villians from frozen sUcK and i want too more darker Disney villians
Kadri Aalto I totally agree, now it's all about selling a mediocre fairy tale to kids, there's is no matter or emotions in them.
And they say Disney can't do dark.
WHO said THAT ?!!! O.o XDDD
little Maleficent Basically people on the internet keep going on about how Disney is going to kid friendly everything they get making it all sun shine and rainbows.
Lionactor The villain song is about how said villain wants to screw the main female character and if she says no he'll have her burned at the stake.
This is Disney's darkest project ever. This song ranked #1 in the Darkest Disney Songs and movies because it mentions about sex and hell.
Actually Disney did a movie called the black cauldron that they covered up an disowned because it was too scary.
Why do villains get the best songs?
Cough I'll make a man out of you cough
The DBZ ABRIDGED version is way better than the original
Ella Kelso Because the Heroes control the movies. The hero gets the girl in the end and they all live happily ever after. And what do the villains get? (Great songs) after all they play a big part in the movie. They have to get some appreciation. #VillainLivesMatter

The reprise of Prince Ali sung by Jafar was also very good.

Kiera Mae not the bestt
The best villains in all of literature, mythology, cinema, and television are the ones who think they're doing good. They're the best because they actually exist.
This sounds totally like Frollo, and Light Yagami from Death Note.
godzilla964 Rasputin from Anastasia. he existed.
Karen Laurvick Rasputin wasn't really someone who thought he was doing good, though. He was a womanizer, alcoholic and conman and pretty much accepted those facts and just lived his life out being a scumbag.
Rowan Buchanan
Wasnt he a priest? or of some religion? but anyway i didn't know all of that :)
Karen Laurvick Russian Orthodox "monk", which is just a sect of Catholicism.
He was eating up the Czar's/Czarina's money "healing" their son with mysticism. Also had a lot of footing in their circle and influence over them. Nicholas was a pretty meek person.
In the original story, he almost rapes Esmeralda, so this song really fits.
Maka Albarn Almost?
He gets as far as holding her down while she struggles, before Quasimodo bursts in and throws him against the wall (it happens in the bell tower)
In the original story written by Victor Hugo, he was a Bishop, actually. Disney turned him into a judge to avoid the controverse.

Well I mean he kinda gives a rapist vibe. I mean he is 70 something possibly wanting a girl that cant be more than 20 years of age
In the book he tries to rape her it's not human desire.
The most evil here is GOD...
WHY DOES HE MAKE THE DEVIL SO MUCH STRONER THAN THE MAN?!?
I think it's less "human nature" and more the fault of his pride. He was too proud to admit that he was a sinner, and blamed Esmeralda for "tempting him". He uses the excuse that God must want it to happen, thinking that his response is natural and that anyone in his position would do the same. Really it's his own inability to look at himself and realize that it's his fault, not hers, and that he has to be the one to change.
Dang, so poetically spoken
You know what's scary? There are actually people like this.
They're called incels
Yup, it's hard to believe but true.

The latin adds so much power and sense to this song, and i just love it.
Dude thanks for be latin lyrics, been wanting to know them for a long time
La Esmeralda I understood some of the Latin because I was raised catholic, oh how I’ve strayed.

2D Disney > 3D Disney
Now it would mean making a plot where a more liberal-type of character was the villain. A feminist as the villain? Gasp, that wouldn't sit well with the audience (sigh)
ah yes, The Old Disney that cloaks Sexual desire and religion in children's movies :D
so much you can pick out in adulthood when you watch them again when you miss it as a kid
It's villains like Frollo and Scar that make me miss the old days of animated films ):
I couldn't agree any more.
Frollo is like the most underrated villan in disney movies
+Obi Wan Kenobi he's one of the few truly human villens in Disney

i like how the tambourine, the instrument she was using in the festival, is used to make a sound like a rattlesnake.
could've been intentional by Disney as well as a snake is used to represent the Devil in the Garden Of Eden.. and clearly here Frollo is trying to deny his sin, deny the evil in him, deny the devil in him, hence the snake/tambourine noises.
am i the only only one that git shivers down my spine when they sing in latin in the beggining ?

official language of the Roman Catholic Church for hundreds of years....Disney impressed me with that.
I remember reading through the book and every time Frollo talked about/interacted with Esmeralda I could hear this song in my head.
I think this is the most badass Disney song.
RIP the singer of this amazing song. There was no one else who could've done it justice. (Or injustice, in Frollo's case.)
Amen 🙏🏻
This is probably the darkest movie Disney has ever made, especially so in the era it came out. Think about every other 90's Disney movie, none have themes or songs as dark as is one! There are a lot of them in this movie I didn't understand a kid, now I do and it is down right dark and creepy! Cool song but man that is intense for a G rated movie!
Savages- Pocahontas, Kill the beast - Beauty and the beast, Poor Unfortunate Souls - The little mermaid, all three are incredibly dark in their subject matter.
They all have their dark moments. I just personally feel like this movie as a whole is darker throughout.
I honestly have not seen the black cauldron since I was really really little. I don't remember it at all.
The black cauldron is kind of a morbid comedy compared to hunchback if I'm honest
Scar-Be Prepared if you remove the hyena jokes (which I feel like was done to make it seem less dark) has a guy basically taking an army and his own wish to rule to kill the monarchy and make it a dictatorship with marching soldiers and that imagery is way more creepy than it's taken for "because it's animals."
And in a way, it's sorta true, as all it takes here is one man, creepy back imagery of red men in coats, a dancing flame, and Frollo to sing of his wrongdoings he is consumed by but wants mercy and is going to do it anyway.
You know when I was a little girl and I saw this for the first time this was my favorite song just because it was dark and I loved the music itself, now that I'm older and I went to a Catholic school and I know what he's singing about...It's just makes me like the song more because now I know the understanding of the song.
You know what I mean?
What's the TRUE meaning? Because I never went to cathlic school...
So he feels disgraceful and he wants to get rid of what causes him to do this which is the girl.
Lexie Michaud yea...but....like he said be mine or you will burn....that...kiiinda means he doesn't want her dead...right?
My favorite part is when the red-cloaked figures appear after Frollo says his desire is "turning him to sin". I looked it up, and they're singing "Mea culpa" or "Through my fault" in Latin. Meanwhile, Frollo's attempting to argue and say he's not to blame for his lust. I've always thought they represent all his sins, and that when he sees them, he's facing his own damnation and trying to escape it. Thus he sounds so desperate.
The red coated figures are supposed to be the Inquisition.
Yeah same
I first heard about this i did not know snything about this was me
"WHO ARE THESE PEOPLE"
That is pretty funny.
Same and I was like
"Why are you randomly ranting to a fire about fire"
WHO’S MARIA (im serious please answer me)
The thing about Frollo is that while we have villians like Hades, Ursula, etc.(Which are very characterized and satirical).
The perfect movie villain.
wow, Romeo and Juliet need to give Frollo dating advice
you know, they probably shouldn't seeing that their love ended with a double suicide and they cause multiple deaths
let's say some one should except romeo and juliet
*****
Let's not forget that the setting of the play--all took place within a week. Romeo and Juliet married within the first few days of knowing one another.
(So yeah, I absolutely despise when young people say they want a romance like Romeo and Juliet...)
5Geass exactly!
joshua miller obviously when people say they want a romeo and juliet romance they dont mean the deaths and misunderstandings, but their actual week long affair was so messed up that you would never want an exact copy of their love. that is why it bugs me when people say they had a "perfect love" or "true love". at best it was a mutual crush. no need to get so defensive over it.
(also, romeo and juliet was a romance, but it wasnt written to express the love. it was to show how conflict over petty things can tear families apart. i hate when people romanticize it so much that it seems like romance was the only point of writing it.)
Me: Burning desire? Dude, how much viagra did you take?

Frollo:I don't have it prescribed! I bought it from a friend!
It is the Gypsy dude, the guy in the corner, in a van!
Frollo are u ok dude?
you know, for kids!!! :)
I don't know why people are saying they feel bad for Frollo and that he's not a bad guy. In the first 10 minutes of the movie we see him:
-kill a woman
-attempt to kill a baby
-lock that baby up in Notre Dame for all of its formative years and early adulthood
He's also seen ordering the torture of prisoners when he's introduced to Phoebus, and he also burns down all of Paris so he can find a piece of underage poontang. This is not a good guy.
***** There was a book? Could you please tell me where I might find it? I'd rather like to read it, especially since I didn't have a clue that this was a book.
Ah, thank you!
for me, it's several things:
first of all, I don't believe in the terms 'virtuous' or 'wicked', because those seem too relative and stupid terms to me.
***** oh, it's alright :) I don't mind.
Well in the story of snow white her Prince molested her dead body. We still love him don't we?

It always cracks me up that someone comes in while he’s singing. That’s so relatable. Singing and/or acting something out and then someone walks in on you
When Frollo is singing about how it is not his fault the choir in the background is singing mea culpa which means my bad
In the background they're reciting an entire catholic prayer for forgiveness.
ItzReesieCup That's at the very beginning of the song yes.
elmakarov It's in the beginning but it's also playing in the background throughout his song.
Jonathan Campbell Isn't the last part explains vanity?
"He made the devil so much stronger than a man"

This is one of Disney's darkest villain songs, and I love it. They really took a risk, not just with the song but the story material they chose as well. It's a very dark story with some pretty adult themes and I can happily say with age I have only come to love this film more and more over time

When someone says Disney is for kids I am so gonna show them this movie. It's so dark in an extremely amazing way.
I like how this Movie taught me that Even religious People, who Society Says are the Most Rightous can be more evil than Anyone Else, best Song ever
Blames Esmeralda, the devil, and even God instead of acknowledging "I should refuse to act on my urges instead of using temptation as an excuse."
This is the kind of thinking which blackened his soul, and I like how we have this look into his thoughts (and how relatable it is-we all have thoughts we don't want responsibility for).
I love this comment section so much.... XD

This is one of those Disney songs where I turn up the volume in my headphones
Same.
me too, I always come back to this song every time
when i was a kid watching this, i thought “does he love her or hate her?” now that i’m rewatching this, he doesn’t love her. he’s just a pervert lmao
*Minister Frollo! This video has been disliked!*
What?
*It's been disliked 25+ times, and they're gone.*
But how, I-Never mind!
:D
Heh.
jrpludacrous niiiiicccceee
By the way wat character is tht an wat movie is he in I've seen it before can't remember the name
dark wolf Omasis Jones from Omasis Jones. Great movie.
I assume this is what happens when you never fap
More disturbing now.
Michael Joesph That would mean she is about 16, while joseph would be most likely in his twenties. remember, human life span has more than doubled since the times of jesus.
But also in that time the modern term virgin wasn't an idea it was the society norm. So Mary would have also been a virgin that that sense of well.
However the rest of the New Testament is saturated with words which hold the meaning of virgin (of never having had sex)
This amuses me greatly.
Same person also wrote closer by nine inch nails
@@MrRey1604 makes sense
How is this a kids movie again
Srsly tho
The song is literally about a Catholic man who will kill someone if they don't have sex with them
Don't get me wrong, I still love the movie, and think it's amazing... but today it would be scrapped. 0_0
that's why the older disney stuff was best... people (parents especially) nowadays get far too offended and butthurt now. this is easily one of Disney's best songs, and it's sad they try to distance themselves from it (and even more sad that an amazing song like this wouldn't exist if the movie was made now)
Agreed! I love the movie a lot, and I wouldn't change it for the world... but sadly, it could never be played in our world today.
*****
That is true, however, he keeps talking about her skin and her hair and how beautiful stuff, which (to me at least) makes it seem like he's just freaked out about how he has a boner and doesn't know how to react to it since he's a holy man.
I mean, don't get me wrong, I understand your meaning of love and how he wants her to himself and no one else, BUT you have to understand that how he speaks out about her physically, it kind of seems like he's screaming and scared of how he has a boner for her and doesn't know what to do. haha
Just to lighten the mood, my boyfriend watched this movie with me one night and he paused it to just look at me and laugh and "sing" that he is afraid and doesn't know how to feel about how he has a boner for Esmerellda and how he is a holy man. It made me laugh for quite awhile since he was standing up right and trying to imitate Esmerellda.
Anyhow, This movie is great and I wish that movies like this were made more often instead of parents freaking out about how many "adult things" are put into a children's movie. They're going to learn it in life anyway, why not at least have them a little more prepared instead of having everything thrown at them at once?
this song is a metaphor for the sin of lust. I agree with Avery, the hidden meaning of this song is prty explicit.
Quasimodo - Martin Freeman
Frollo - Alan Rickman
Esmeralda - Mila Kunis
Phoebus - Chris Hemsworth or Dan Stevens
The clopin - Jared Leto
+Tonia S YES YES YES.
I don't know if you got it but I agree...
+Tonia S MG!!!!! YESS!!!!! :D
+Tonia S That I'd love to see.
OH MY GOD YES
OMG I would pay all of my money just to see Rickman play Frollo.
hellfire is the best disney villain song to exist the latin words adds a nice touch and theres a lot of representations and a lot of meanings behind every scene
This song gives me chills. Every time.
Ahh. I think I'll like watching old Disney movies even better now that I'm older. I know the original, creepy and tragic stories that the movies were based on and I can catch all the adult themes in the movies that I missed as a kid.
Same here.
"I'll find her. I'll find her even if I have to burn down all of Paris?"
Frolo predicted the future.
Walt Disney: * looks at this *
His assistant : Sir, are we sure this is suitable for kids?
Walt:
Walt: I mean, its got lust, burnings, hell. Of course it is!
whenever someone talks about someone being thirsty i always hear this in my head
I need to wet my whistle
This song plays in my head when we have Serbian class
This song has NO BUSINESS to be this good 😭
The Priest of Notre Dame sings about being consumed by the burning fire that is lust, and a couple days ago the Cathedral was consumed in fire.
The Hunback of Notre Dame
How one old preists erection nearly destroyed an entire city
2:58
i swear the choir gives me chills. sounds so sinister and dark, i love it!
One of the only songs can hear over and over again and not get tired of it..... I LOVE THIS SONG
Me too.
It strikes hard into your soul, which I think is what this type of choir music tries to do
Can you imagine if they make a live action remake of Hunchback of Notre Dame
MrWildcard531 yes I would love to see that!!!
Oh sweet Jesus. That might turn into a hot mess
As long as Jeremy Irons is Frollo I'll be satisfied
I'd honestly rather see another studio do it because Disney would definitely tone it down.
If they feel the need to tone down Aladdin, I don't want to even know how dull Frollo would be.
However if they could somehow manage to do it right, with such darkness as it has, it'd
easily be one of the most ambitious, creepy, well done movies of all time.
If only Alan Rickman or Ricardo Montalban were alive. They would’ve been perfect for Frollo.
0:47 - "I'm tripping butter"
This made me laugh so hard how do you not have more likes
