Cool that he's rating songs from 1998 while looking like Parappa the Rapper.
Get with the drip
1998 without DMX or lauryn hill ?????
@@frequentiishe is rating the top ten charting hits, not selecting his faves
Do you know. Why. We stopped. The car?
Fantano low key killed the Savage Garden track lol
I hear R&b fans often refer to Brandy as the vocal “Bible”…so for Anthony to say she isn’t among the best is CRAZY!
I think he meant she wasn’t one of the best at THIS time she was still too young, but she eventually became one of the best absolutely
@@uhuhuh1966get off riding Fantanos back. He never said anything like that. He said “not the strongest vocalists in R&B” a bad take is just that a bad take
@@superzrod7723 this entire video is within the context of 1998, he reviews each track as is not with the history of each artist before or after, maybe cut back on the bad faith a little bit
@@uhuhuh1966 no his opinion often has a different sensibility than how he would listen to it in 1998 and sometimes he says what has aged well and what has not aged well
@@superzrod7723 yeah…and Brandy’s teenage vocals haven’t aged as well as her adult vocals.
Fantano's take on "The Boy is Mine" left me utterly shocked. That is a classic.
Considering what he said I was surprised he put it in the A tier
Same that's S tier level 💯
@@waynedexter Same, It sounded like it was going to go in C tier. Which would have sent me reeling.
@@dieselthejewelerExactly
I feel like he was being sarcastic a bit much in this statement
K-Ci & JoJo's 'All My Life' playing at the middle school dance and making you think about asking your crush if they want to dance but being too shy and so you do nothing and just stay in your friend group and get jealous of the person who ends up dancing with your crush.
U ok?
My middle school didn’t allow us to have dances. We got to awkwardly stand around in the gym while Christian music played. Dancing gets you pregnant was their justification 😂
And then they play “Too Close” by Next & you’re sitting there just by yourself. Sad trombone…
Drag us!
My favs from the 1998 top 100:
11. How’s it going to be? - Third Eye Blind
12. No, no, no, no - Destiny’s child
20. Adia- Sarah McLaughlin
21. Crush - Jennifer Page
28. Sex and Candy - Marcy”
35. Tubthuming - Chumbawumba
40. Make ‘em say Uhh - Master P
46. kiss the rain - Billie Meyers
52. Swing my Way - KP and Envyi
70. Ghetto Superstar - Pras, PDB, Mya
79. Bittersweet Symphony - The Verve (not to be confused with the band the Verve Pipe who had a song called “Freshman” at the same time)
80. Still Not a Player - Big Pun
81. Love you Down - INOJ
I'm about to go play some of these again!
Ahhhhhhhh nooooOOOOoOoOO
I GET KNOCKED DOWN
BUT I GET UP AGAIN
YOU'RE NEVER GONNA KEEP ME DOWN
ocarina of time dropped in 98 too
❤😂
Overrated trash
Don't forget Half-Life and MGS1 too.
Who tf cares?
that is so skibidi epic
I was shocked these songs didn't make the list:
Aerosmith - I Don't Want To Miss a Thing
Barenaked Ladies - One Week
Lauryn Hill - Doo Wop (That Thing)
Celine Dion - My Heart Will Go On (yes, it was released in 1997, but it released in December of that year and had more time to be on the charts in '98.
Madonna - Ray of Light
Goo Goo Dolls - Iris
My Heart Will Go On was pretty close at #13
Jesus, Iris is a throwback
"I Want You" is the real Jam by Savage Garden
Found the Jojo fan
as soon as you said "k-ci and jojo" i paused the video and IMMEDIATELY put on the song. my soul demanded that of me.
Same here
1998 was a fabulous year for the charts. Probably the year I have a lot of a nostalgia for.
Albums also: Mezzanine, Ray of Light, Aquemini, Hello Nasty, Celebrity Skin, Follow The Leader, SOAD's self-titled album, The Shape of Punk to Come, Version 2.0, Vol 2...Hard Knock Life, Mechanical Animals, Without You I'm Nothing, Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie, Hellbilly Deluxe, Yield etc
Paula Cole absolutely kills it on Peter’s Gabriel’s secret world live album!
Yes! Absolutely incredible
Yep. That whole thing is just a spectacle of elevated musicianship and performance art (in terms of the actual concert).
I bought that live album back in high school (huge Peter fan, but that phone album cover drew me in honestly lol) and was certainly glad I did.
Just out of curiousity, I decided to look up the top 10 singles in '98 for my country (Australia). Specifically looking at the ARIA (Australian Recording Industry Association) website for this, as I'm assuming that's the best place. This will be a long-ish comment so fair warning before opening 🤷♂ I kept thinking I was looking at the wrong year while typing this up lol.
.
10. Paula Cole - I don't wanna wait - not listed (this surprises me given how much I heard it as a kid)
9. Usher - Nice & Slow - not listed (His song You Make Me Wanna was 47 on the Aus charts however?)
8. Elton John - Candle in the Wind is not listed
7. K-Ci and Jojo - All My Life - #12
6. Janet Jackson - Together Again - #27
5. LeAnn Rimes - How Do I Live - not listed
4. Savage Garden - Truly Madly Deeply - not listed (this one surprised me - and that's because it was a 1997 release for Australia)
3. Shania Twain - You're Still the One - #9 (Shania also takes the #10 spot for Aus with the song From This Moment On)
2. Brandy & Monica - The Boy is Mine - #17
1. Next - Too Close - #83 (I find this amusing for some reason)
And for anyone who's curious, here's the Australian Top 10 from '98:
1. Cup of Life/Maria - Ricky Martin (I added Cup of Life because wikipedia lists it alongside Maria as #1?)
2. It's Like That - Run DMC Vs Jason Nevins
3. Iris - Goo Goo Dolls
4. I Don't Wanna Miss a Thing - Aerosmith
5. Never Ever - All Saints
6. Prisoner of Society - The Living End
7. Crush - Jennifer Paige
8. Redundant/Time of Your Life - Green Day
9. You're Still the One - Shania Twain
10. From This Moment On - Shania Twain
And because this comment isn't long enough, the Triple J Hottest 100 top 10 (I like looking at triple J because people actually vote for these songs):
1. Pretty Fly (For a White Guy) - The Offspring
2 . Cigarettes Will Kill You - Ben Lee
3. Girls Like That (Don't Go For Guys Like Us) - Custard
4. Celebrity Skin - Hole
5. Got the Life - Korn
6. ! (The Song Formerly Known As) - Regurgitator
7. Harpoon - Jebediah
8. The Day You Come - Powderfinger
9. Heavy Heart - You Am I
10. Save the Day - The Living End
Sorry for the format change from "artist - song" to "song - artist", it's because I copy-pasted the other two lists 😂)
Jebediah’s first album👌👌
did you just say Brandy isn't a strong vocalist? she's literally "the vocal bible". and for the record, 'the boy is mine' was written by Brandy, from her own personal experience.
Vocal Bible? Did she naje that up?
@@excaliber8713 google is free.

Saying Brandy is not a strong vocalist in rnb is a wild take.
She’s not. Post a video of Brandy singing her heart out like some straight up 1960s Aretha Franklin stuff straight up 1990 Mariah Carey stuff some straight up 1988 Whitney Houston stuff. Like BELTING out a song. Do that and I’ll stop posting in every one of these butthurt Brandy comments basically saying Fantano is spot on 🤔
Brandy is like famously a weak singer. Check out her song “That Boy Is Mine”
There's a reason we call her the vocal bible. People who claim otherwise have no sense for nuance in tone.
@@chiarosuburekeni9325Because that’s all that matters
Saying Brandy and Monica aren't strong vocalist is insanity
Yo I'm 42 so yeah I'm watching this rn 😂
Brandy is an incredible vocalist but Monica has never been on the same level. She's not a strong vocalist, she's just decent.
But Melon saying that while gushing over KC and Jojo's wack runs is hilarious.
That is a very odd thing for melon to say
They are not strong vocalists.
Well,, not to discredit but, as much as they are good in doing runs... they are those kind of singers who sings like on the chest level.. they don't soar like let's say... Whitney, Mariah or Bey.
1998 is also the year that Tori Amos’ album “ from the choir girl hotel“ was released, a classic in her catalog. I was obsessed with it as a high school freshman in 2004.
if brandy isn’t one of the strongest vocalists in r&b i’m a fucking tree are you joking
Is she really? Have you ever really heard her belt out anything on the level of an early Mariah Carey or Whitney? I think you equate her success with her inherently having a strong singing voice. People do this with aaliyah too which I find beyond wild. Either that or you take it as a diss to the artist or something. It’s weird 🤷🏽♂️
Not everyone is Aretha Franklin on the mic and that’s fine
Brandy 's vocal Bible moniker came from her use of heavy runs on a singular note (i.e. Have You Ever) she can belt very high (i.e He Is, I Thought) or very low ('Full Moon')... she has an amazing head voice w/ a distinct raspiness.
Her voice is tart yet sweet like honey 🍯
@@mikeballs3249 great singer and strong vocalist aren’t necessarily the same thin
@@chiarosuburekeni9325 listen to the full moon album, you'd be surprised by her vocal agility. she's insanely skilled and influential
@@coreyo.conner7897 Who came up with that moniker? Cause it sounds goofy as hell lol no disrespect to her talent I'm not super familiar with her but anything I've heard has been great.
This is my chance to say that the Paula Cole album This Fire is a fuckin BANGER and feels massively underrated for how big its singles were. Just hope at least one person revisits it off the back of this comment and discovers what a little gem that album is.
It's crazy that you get "Feelin' Love" and "Hush, Hush Hush" back to back on that album. Polar opposites, and Paula slays both of them. She's such an underrated songwriter and vocalist.
Gonna give it a shot! Thank you!
100%
Ok I was looking for this comment like I love Tori and Fiona but Paula absolutely has the vocals and song writing abilities to be among them. "This Fire" is so versatile and emotional.
Exactly! It's such a landmark from the singer-songwriter canon of the 90s.
In my head, 1998 will always be 'You Get What You Give' by New Radicals.
I wish you kept it there
jk
Amazing tune. On my funeral playlist.
This is the one series on any RUclips channel where I always like the video in hopes that it motivates Anthony to keep making these videos
cat power moon pix is criminally underrated and underappreciated. if you like sad music, listen to this album.
Her best album.
love this comment. that album makes me bawl every time i get a full run through. i was so surprised how amazing it was the first time i heard it, truly underappreciated!!!
I always figured Brandy and Monica’s track was inspired by the Girl is Mine song Michael Jackson and Paul McCartney did much earlier.
I've never seen that savage garden album art before but it looks like they're photoshopped in some world of warcraft screenshot
Would have been Everquest back then
@rafetizer Heck, it could honestly be any mid-late 90s game with FMV cutscenes. The 3D modeling in these games is… certainly something to behold.
1998 my fam got satellite tv and I watched Match Game reruns on GSN and combined with these songs 1998 is the best year ever
Oh man I was born in the mid 90s and I got a flashback of hearing that Paula Cole song all over the place and now I’m getting that same chorus stuck in my head like 25 years later, thanks for reminding me.
Anthony should do this series by genre as well. Like top rock songs of the 90s, top rap songs, etc.
Your R&B takes are consistently wild
anthony always gives janet her flowers and i love that
1998 is definitely one of my favorite years, especially summer. I knew it back as a 12 year old that it was a special time with the music and video games.✨
Jesus, idk how I forgot about all my life but thank you for bringing that memory back 😭😭😭😭
Janet's The Velvet Rope was an incredible time, but it was also when she was talking about coffee enemas and other weird shit. It was a weird time for Janet.
She was just ahead of her time 💯 Pro-black as hell and shows major love to the LGBT community before anybody else would.
@@CharlesWarrenOnline Oh honey.... that is NOT something that started in the 90s lmao. And definitely not with Janet.
when did she talk about that?
she was doing all that because she was depressed.. that’s how the record came to be lol
@@azalagoBut it was still pretty taboo in the late 90s.
some of that paula Cole disrespect can be remedied by reviewing her amazing new album fantano
Love the love for I Don't Want To Wait, great video!
Anthony, you and I are about the same age, so I know you could relate to "Too Close" in 1998 as much as I could. That song made me feel seen.
Thank you for the take on The Boy is Mine. I could never understand the verse lyrics since Brandy and Monica seemed to mumble through them
Music Sounds Better With You best song of 1998 for surrrrre
Such a banger, it's strange that it's not even mentioned here
I had no idea Paula Cole sang the theme song to Dawson's Creek. The song wasn't a hit in the UK, but "Where Have All the Cowboy's Gone" was a minor hit (UK 15) here.
his love for Janet makes me so happy
Great video sir. Also, I would love a review an Animal collective album from the 2000s(merriweather post pavilion, sung tongs, strawberry jam, feels)
1998 is an incredible year if you’re looking for “background music for when you’re shopping at target” kind of vibes
Sorry, that's 2024.
I already know he's gonna say "banger" at least 40 times
damn these songs just brought it all back, i never knew a lot of the songs by name but as soon as you hear them you know. gg great video
I'm always here for Fantano showing love to Janet, Together again and TVR, as he should!
I love seeing melon go on a hardcore nostalgia trip
I will not take the Brandy/Monica slander but highly appreciate the Janet Jackson appraisal.
ok this is definitely the era where i listened more to smurf cds than pop charts. i only recognise half of these names
Can't wait for "Top 10 songs of 467 a.c" to arrive.
The most fire line-up of songs in one of these videos yet. The Boy is Mine is S-tier though, easily cracks the top 10 of '90s rnb hit records for me. I think Brandy is generally rated as an excellent vocalist too. Happy to see Anthony show some love to these 1998 songs, even the ones that aren't traditionally cool like the Shania Twain and Leann Rimes songs. I vibe with that. He should've mentioned Con Air though, this was an era where a song featured in the climax or end credits of a movie could katapult it to radio fame.
Hip hop 1998 highlights:
Miseducation of Lauryn Hill
Aquemini
Moment of Truth
Black Star
Capital Punishment
It's Dark and Hell is Hot
Too Close was a staple at every middle school dance
facts i was in middle school from 1996-1999, my millennials, don't let GenZ kill male R&B, SMH
I strongly believe in the concept of "forever music", those songs that are just timeless and eternal beyond the scope of the era they existed in, and All My Life has to be up there somewhere. A simple message delivered in the most astonishingly beautiful fashion? How could that not last forever?
(the music video is pretty great too)
blessed to say i’ve seen janet twice
When was it?
@@therandomname69420 SOTW Tour in 2017 and May 2023 for her latest Tour
I was born at the end of 1989, and while I can remember a bit of 1993 and more and more throughout as the years went on, 1998 has always stood out to me. I guess I know part of the reason why now lol
Brandy is the vocal bible
That Savage Garden cover art made me laugh so hard. They went and searched "3D desktop wallpaper" and just photoshoppped themselves into it.
I appreciate the covers because I never remember the songs until you sing them lol
Dude, that Paula Cole song is forever etched in my brain just cause my older sister watched Dawson's creek religiously.
It'll just pop in my head over 25 years later at the most inopportune times
Usher is so weird to think back on because I don’t remember any of his early songs. Consequently, Yeah feels like a one hit wonder even though it was on his comeback album.
@@cityboy2092I feel like only other races who dare say Usher don’t have known hits.
@@msawmusic Exactly. There's a big cultural gap that "closed" somewhere around the 2000s-2010s because of internet access. Musical and cultural spheres were a lot more cut off from each other in the 90s and before. Another example is I think the D'Angelo retrospective from Mic The Snare where he and a lot of other white people in the comments discovered Jason's Lyric for the first time
1998 had so many bangers that I think that's when those Now That's What I Call Music compilations started coming out.
They've been going since the 80s. I remember my brother had a video of NOW 8 and it included stuff like Dire Straits "Money For Nothin'" and The Housemartins "Caravan of Love".
@@anarchodollyjust looked it up and it looks like they did exist in the UK in the 80s. In the US they started in 98. Very cool !
Damn, such vivid memories of all these tracks...watchin Carson Daly count them down from the basement...singing All My Life at the talent show...1998 was a true vibe
I’ve been playing together again whenever I get any aux cable or Bluetooth connection for years, it’s just that good
Fantano should make some type of review/tier list of some popular lost songs in the lostwave community
brandy not one the strongest vocalists in rnb?? be fr
Monica is strong too. Her tone is guttural, love it. Janet Jackson is the one who can't sing.

Love the contemporary color fit fantano
Paula Cole (oof), probably a very nice lady, but I remember as a kid couldn't escape that song. Then WB/CW had the Dawson's Creek show; it got more TV play.
Born in '95, stoked to hear what bangers came out that year!
i mean dunno chart wise but; Tricky, The roots, ol dirty bastard, goldie, aphextwin, d'angelo, no doubt, Radiohead, daftpunk all had classic stuff out to name a few.
Oh man, I was 18 in 1998 and know most of these songs brought me back and nostalgia really didn't influence me at all. Most of these songs I didn't like at the time and it's still the same today. It seemed adult contemporary and RnB with pretty dominant at that far more than I remembered. I don't recognize Next - Too Close at all.
Lmao I went to the All My Life music video to try the song out and Fantano had a 9 year old comment under it.
And just like that, I'm 3 years old processing pop music for probably the first time. What a throwback
The Brandy take is putting everything you’ve ever said into question.
The production wasn’t fancy but nice and slow is absolutely one of ushers greatest songs of all time. It’s an incredible song and track after track in that album was fire.
1998 was really in the feels
Saying Brandy is not a strong vocalist is literally an insane massive L take.
Honestly I’m⚡️SHOCKED he said that!
Fantano is full of L takes tho
That sonic sample in the Janet song ❤
A bit weird how you can appreciate Janet’s vocal (although she’s historically has never been a strong singer and has received alot of flack for her lack of power) but in the same breath trash Brandy as not a strong vocalist lol. KC AND Jojo also had some very off tune notes in that song and aren’t the strongest singers.
maybe K-ci was off tune, but jojo hailey is top 10, top 15 all-time
glad to see “all my life” get some love. that song has always hit
The love for Shania shocked and delighted me!
K-Ci and Jojo: All My Life. The prom anthem of EVERY Class of '98 school across the country.
We need an Overcompensate - Twenty One Pilots track review!!
Born in ‘98 club 🐐💯

omfg I forgot about all my life. gonna be stuck in my head for days now
Please bring back these are 10s series
1997 is going to be very controversial 💀
My high school graduation year. Life has been a dramatic burden since then. This is definitely nostalgic.
They Might Be Giants and Soul Coughing snubbed
My dad cried during Elton’s performance during Diana’s funeral. He was devastated when she passed so senselessly.
I totally forgot about all my life goddamn. That song was blasting ALL THE TIME back in the day
As far as the last song goes, I would like to respectfully submit to you Anthony, "Pony" by Ginuwine! Not 98 but as far as the 90's go, it is the poster child for this type of music.
Still waiting for Top 10 Songs of 1997 video 😅
Too close was just one of those songs that sounded so good you didn’t even think to really listen to the lyrics, I remember sing “you’re making it hard for me” thinking it meant like it was hard for me to not want her or something like that 😂
One of the most memorable years of the 90’s
Good to know my birthyear was full of bangers
The year I graduated high school. The 90’s were sooooo good!!!
As a child of the 90s myself, I'm enjoying going down music memory lane with Fantano ✊
insane list!
