      Actually no. They aren’t done by a committee. They take however many ppl, all walks of life, and each of them list their top 1 or 5 or whatever it is. Then they tally those votes. That’s how artists that you wouldn’t think of as top singers like Fela Kuti get on here.

    This is a list you really can’t do without separating by genre. A soul singer is gonna have a much different voice than a punk rock singer, but nothing makes one inherently better than the other. That or make it an unranked list.

      Musical theater: barbara streisand
      Edith Piaf, Amália Rodrigues, Elis Regina,Camaron de la isla.
      All of these people are considered the voice of their respective genres and everybody that comes after them has to mesure themselves against them, then we can start to discuss the rest of the list

The list is called the greatest singers, not the most technically competent vocalists and Freddie Mercury’s painful and annoying voice is not the voice of rock.

    I’m blown away at MJ being that low, especially putting Ariana so much higher than him. I’d argue that Ariana could make the list, though DEFINITELY lower down it- yeah she is literally impossible to understand sometimes but she does have more of a range and ability than people realize when you look at her Broadway-style work. Janet being missing is also strange.

      THANK YOU! Sinatra is iconic and influential, but his technical ability in terms of jazz is just pretty good. Ella Fitzgerald was a master. Really calling a sinatra a jazz singer doesn’t make a whole lot of sense, he never improvised, like ever. (Like solos, I mean)

      @@Kevin-fj3ff I think if there's a difference in recognizeability between them that has more to do with the death of jazz and also race, but that's not even my biggest disagreement here. More importantly, I don't think the replicability of Sinatra's voice is a point in his favor. Sure, his voice was pretty, and he had skill to back it up, but that doesn't make him better than her. Quite the opposite, Ella is iconic BECAUSE few can do what she did.

All you need to do is listen to her and Duke Ellingtons 7 minute rendition of It Don’t Mean A Thing and that’s all you’ll ever need to hear to understand why she should always be higher than Frank Sinatra on any list that involves singing. Frank has the reputation he has because of the time he made music and because of his race and gender. He has phenomenal style but when it comes to singing there are a plethora of singers apart from Ella from his time that could sing circles around him.

    Celine Dion is among the Vocal Trinity, alongside Whitney and Mariah. She may be polarising in terms of her artistic choices, but as a singer, she is no doubt a tour de force. She, together with Whitney and Mariah, powered the diva industry in the 90s that basically gave birth to Christina Aguilera, Beyonce, Adele, Gaga and Ariana. She didnt sing her ass off in All By Myself and It's All Coming Back to Me Now to be disrespected this way.

Mike Patton is possibly THE most versatile vocalist in rock and metal, the way he can essentially change voices on the fly on songs like Mr Bungle's Squeeze Me Macaroni and Faith No More's Land Of Sunshine is genuinely mind blowing, and as much as I love Serj, listening to Mr Bungle shows that he was clearly taking a lot of his style from Patton.

    The criteria for this list seemed completely arbitrary to me. For some they're basing it off of vocal ability, others for emotion, others for songwriting, and others for impact/legacy. It was all over the place.
    Also the edit while talking about Bruce Dickinson made me LOL. I was definitely upset and confused that he wasn't on this list too

    I understand not representing the extremes of vocal genres as much, but I really think Serj should have made the list. Such a unique and versatile voice. In terms of influence there are also a lot of country singers like Rex Allen. Also a yodeller, speaking of extreme vocal genres.

Lists like these generally ignore any metal subgenres outside classic 70s metal and maybe NWOBHM which is a shame because there's some incredible vocal work in the extreme subgenres. Even if they'd just included one or two as a nod to those styles I'd have been okay with it.

But lists like this are inherently impossible to manage, Sissel Kyrkjebø is one of the greatest Norwegian singers of all time, but it feels unreasonable to expect the authors to know who she is, even though her vocal ability is much better than many of the people listed, but if you haven't lived in Scandinavia then you've probably never heard of her.
      I feel like this problem will always exist, but that it's better to make lists in narrower categories. Like most important singers for rock and roll history, or just singer-songwriters.

    One ridiculous thing I noticed is that Madonna is mentioned four times during that article (for example they describe Ofra Haza as “The Madonna of the Middle East”), yet they don't include Madonna herself on the list.
    All in all, while making a list like this is difficult, there was just too many undeniably great and influential singers missing from this list to have any appreciation for it.

      Madonna had waaay chops for sure. A legend if pop. Her vocals were literally not great from an objective standpoint if I just think of her key songs. I guess she is way more talented at pop than Lady Gaga, because if Lady Gaga lacked that 3+ octave voice she has, her music would be damps as wet chips.
      Did Amy Lee of Evanescence even make the 200? She brought it. Who else showed women they could make a great pop record without a lilting, meandering vocal style but her? She literally screams and her songs are cream.

    How was Chester Bennington not on this list, given up scream was insane, he could scream incredibly well and was solid when it came to pitch. He was massive in shaping a lot of peoples taste. As well as Layne Staley, did nobody writing this list see Love Hate Love live at the moore? To be honest I'd have replaced Eddie Vedder with either of them, both are more deserving.

    Gene Ween is the most underrated vocalist ever. He has an insane vocal range both in terms of voices that he can do as well as emotions and characters he can portray depending on the song. "If you could save yourself" might be Gene's most passionate performance in any song, and it features both silly and really heartbreaking lyrics.

His style and CCR’s aesthetic is like a vague pastiche of black and white/Cajun Louisiana musicians that almost becomes its own thing.     I think the weirdest inclusion is Rihanna. Like even her fans mostly agree that her voice isn’t the strongest asset and from what I’ve seen of her live she’s pretty breathy and unremarkable.       Where would you put halford, dio and dickinson personally? For me they are top 3 but i understand thats from a metalhead perspective 😂😂 but dio especially should easily top 20 just based on his fucking insane power, otherwordly stage presence and charisma and FLAWLESS, better-than-studio live performances.
