- A well put together backing track is a musician’s best friend. Singer-songwriter Joanne Cooper takes you through the process of making one with the easy-to-use and versatile program Band-in-a-Box! musl.ink/joanne...
Backing tracks are the perfect accompaniment: they’re present enough to keep you on track, but are not so overpowering that you can’t focus on your own playing. They are invaluable to soloists, songwriters, and vocalists alike.
Today, I’m going to be showing you how to make a backing track using PG Music’s Band-in-a-Box product. Using this backing track, you can do all sorts of things like play along and sing along and improvise over it, but before I get into the video tutorial, I just want to mention our video course that I’ve just finished making called, “First Song with Band-in-a-Box,” where I take you through the whole process of writing, recording, mixing, mastering and producing and also releasing your own song using Band-in-a-Box from PG Music.
You can access the course directly from my website. www.joannecoope...
Now, I’m going to demonstrate to you how I can very quickly and easily make a backing track for a popular song or for a song that you have composed yourself so that you can practice and sing over it. I’ll show you how to change the key, how to change the tempo, how to change the groove, and how to change the instrumentation of the backing track. For this tutorial, we’ll assume that you’ve all already purchased and installed Band-in-a-Box from PG Music, but if you haven’t, here are links to purchase the program on Windows and on Mac!
Without further ado, here’s your introduction to using Band-in-a-Box to create backing tracks that will give you incredible practice opportunities:

Suid Afrikaner in Amerika vir afgelope 14 Jaar. Ek het hierdie video gehad onder 'watch later' en skoon daarvan vergeet. Mevrou, my hart klop sommer chocolates van trots. Soveel talent onder ons mense, meerendeels soveel wat bereid is om te deel. Verskoon my Afrikaans, bietjie geroes.
Joanne, greatly appreciate you for taking the time to demo Band in the Box!
Wow....I'm impressed by the transition between the chords...This is so smooth and natural sounding...
Joanne, thank you for this wonderful tutorial. I have watched many tutorials on BIAB and have ended up confused and intimidated; watching you actually create a backing track was just what I needed.
From Nashville, TN, USA... Nice work. I appreciate the effort you put into making this tutorial for us.
Joanne that was absolutely marvellous, I CAN NOW MAKE MY BACKING TRACKS. I am English and live in Cyprus. I play the Greek Bouzouki and sing the Greek songs in Greek as well. Thank you very much for your tutorial of BIAB. You are one of my heroines, the other is another lady who is Greek living in Greece who taught me how to play the bouzouki via youtube.Watch out tavernas in Cyprus, Lenny is here with his Greek bouzouki backing .....Yeeessss!!! XXXXX For you JOANNE.
What a lovely voice You have !!!
Everything was fine until 12:54 You said I'm going to select the FOLK category but it goes too fast and I can't follow. EXACTLY EXACTLY EXACTLY what do you click to get those categories. Then you say I'm going to sort by tempo EXACTLY EXACTLY EXACTLY (slowly) what do you click on to do that? Thank you. Also I came here to learn how to make drum fills, do you have a tutorial on that?
I agree. Joanne tells what it can do, but what is she doing to bring up the pop ups.
Thank you for this video! You explained it so simply and told all we can do with it! Wonderful video and GREAT voice!
Thanks for making my day! You are the best!!!
Nice Job just downloaded Band in a Box 2021 appreciate the information.
Thankyou! Beautiful voice!
Thanks for this great tutorial. I am waiting for my BIAB to be delivered so I can get my own compositions done. Great singing by the way!
Thanks Joanne (or baie dank-u as they say in the old country). Your posting helped kick start my efforts of making backing tracks to I can merrily honk my saxophone to expert accompaniment.
Nice overview of how to use BIAB. I have an arranger keyboard. Do you ever connect your keyboard to your computer and improvise through BIAB?
Amei!! Sua voz é linda!!!
Thank you so much for this tutorial! You really were informational without dwelling too much on a subject, and thanks to you creating songs/backing tracks will be a LOT easier for me :)
Great tutorial.
Thank you. I have been looking for something to "accompany" our guitar group. I think this will do it. Is there a better version that I should look at? Don't want to spend a crazy amount. Maybe about 250ish
i've been playing with it and can't seem to get the lyrics to show with the guitar chords. any help will be appreciated. I've tried the 8th note but nothing shows up to type into and the ctrl L isn't working either. i am obviously missing something
Hi Joanne. Thank you for posting this vídeo. I learn how to use BIAB and practice my English. Thanks a lot.😉😉😉😉😉😉
What happened to the RUclips scrolling music channel?
Great work! You just sold me on buying Band in a Box! Finally, a video that easily explained the creation of a backing track.
Lovely voice
Thanks for the clear and uncomplicated intro to this product.
Thanks for the video! Interesting and usefull
Excellent Video.Thank You,and prayers for SA.
You really awesome 🤠😁
Joanne, your tutorial taught what the BIAB can do, but not how to do it. Will your course be showing where the various functions are located, did I miss the point? I know what it can do but not how.
I am into electronic rock and pop music. Which pak would you recommend me to buy?
Hello Joanne, I'm Allan, also South African (retired) living in Hong Kong. I am so impressed and inspired by this Band in a Box which I only happened to see this on youtube today.I have been searching for this back tracking device for quite some times without any success as I am planning to get myself a keyboard hopefully soon. As a beginner, can you advise which Band in a Box I should buy as I saw there are few models. I enjoyed watching your tutorial. Well done.
Excellent introduction to BIAB!
Hello Joanne, how can I save the chord sheet to return to it later to make changes. once I save it, I can't find the chord sheet that I had just worked on. Thank you.
Ross Melanson
Thanks for making this video! It's extremely useful!
Thank you lady!!! ❤
Any normal people lol
What if I want a full band?
Can you add different instruments?
Thank you and very informative video tutorial :))
hi Joanne, thank you for the tutorial. Say you decide on a basic style with drums-bass-guitar-piano, are you able to import another solo musician/soloist (violins) into that style. Just wanted to make sure this can be done before I delve into your course.thank you tony
This looks good. I'm using a Roland BK7m at present but this BIAB could offer a new dimension. But, what if there is more than one chord per bar? Also, can you mute parts e.g. take out the bass guitar?
HI there Joanne - thanks so much for this. I am a singer/songwriter/musician and have played semi-professionally in Johannesburg - this is really useful. I am at the point of either buying Cubase or this. I already have Presonus Studio 1 , so was wondering whether you think it is worthwhile to get to BIAB and I am interested to know what the vocal and guitar recording capability is like.
Mark,Check out BIAB 2019 or 2020.You can use it in your DAW as a Vst Instrument and just record your vocal and guitar as normal. All BIAB features work as normal. You can also import your BIAB tracks into your DAW as separate tracks for processing.
Thanks for the video. I have a 2016 version which I never used and was quite lost figuring out how to do anything with the software. I learned quite a lot from your video. Thanks. By the way, do you have any comment on products like Akai Force or Abelton Push?
HEHE😂😂😂
My "songwriting" is nothing more than me warbling words over a strummed guitar & I'm not that great at either. BUT I have managed to record them on a Tablet for posterity. They are for my family. Is it possible just to play MY mp3's into BIAB & let it decypher what I have already done and only then for me to try to add/subtract tracks from its massive lists to pick the best backing tracks?
Just a helpful hint. I notice that youtube in general is kind of bad at informing one of the date of things happening. So for you the date would be important and the version of band in a box in terms of the controls displayed and used. I have BB from 2012??? just food for thought
Hi Joanne. Thanks for this. I appreciate the work you put into this video. Just to let you know, I clicked the link for your course but got a 404 message.
thanks for keeping it simple
2:18🎉 3:14😊 9:00
Hi Joanne, another quick question - what screen capture software did you use for this lesson?
Great tutorial thank you !
Thanks for this - new computer coming and BIAB will be ordered ASAP - will help me improve as a guitarist
Hi Joanne, I have struggled with BB for (literally) years. I let it overwhelm me with its complexity and I think your tutorial has been a breakthrough - so I have subscribed. I have had particular problems with instrument control (which ones on , which ones off, and Real tracks or not) etc I followed you pretty well I think, but an indication of where the buttons are on the menu could be a little clearer perhaps. I look forward to travelling with you on this journey. Thanks in anticipation
I would like to compose my own chord progression. In BIAB do I have all the tools to create music? Using "rests", duration of chords, applying styles I like ? Etc. Etc.
It would be helpful if you explained the key strokes you are using to accomplish the tasks.
Thanks for this video. Very interesting. I'm using a Digitech Trio+ which has the same aims but is a hardware platform.
that was amazingly well done, thank you
Pleased you tried different keys; I would have thought that the key of A or B flat would suit your voice best. G was a bit low and D definitely too high. . I'm trying to find out how well BIAB can do to actually suggest suitable chords/progression for a provided melody. I have no musical training, but I'm needing some help to put a chord progression into a line of music without provided suggested chords.
After I record --during play back I get static only as I talk or as the inst plays. Need help.
I think the problem is recording on a mike and having the studio speakers on at the same time.
Solution use head phones.
Hej, love your video, when you are finished the song, do you save it in sty. file? Can I play it in a keyboard? Thanks a lot.
excellent tutorial, thanks so much :)
Thanks Joanne! Interesting ideas there :-) I just bought the program and knew nothing about it, so it would have been helpful if you had not only talked and demo'ed some of the features, but also shown me how/where to trigger them or change them on the display. ie. where to click my cursor. :D ...but, still interesting and helpful.
Checkout ruclips.net/user/aaronshortmusic he is doing a set of really helpful "lessons", he explains it very well.
Thank you for a great video I have just ordered BIAB and am looking forward to creating my backing tracks, could I ask are you able to save the tracks onto a usb memory stick.
Hi, Jack. In reply to your question, when you want to save your file or songs to a USB, simply click on "save as" and go down to "USB" on your computer; and when you click on that, there should be an option of "mp3." I may not have these steps in the right order, but I am able to easily save it on USB.
I hope this helps.
How do you change the chords as there should be some 7th chords in this song... Sorry this is the first time I have used this software...
Antony Dick type in G7. Yeah, it’s that simple
Hi Joanne, many thanks for this. I really like your voice. I have a few questions about Band In A Box, which I am hoping you can answer.
1. Can you mute an individual bar, if you want?
2. Is it possible to change key mid-song?
3. Is it possible to have various time signatures within a song (or maybe to create different songs and
then join them together in order to, in effect, get one new song with different time signatures in it)?
4. Similar to the previous question, can one change tempo during mid-song?
5. Is it possible to export individual tracks (either Real Tracks or MIDI tracks) in a common format,
such as WAV or MP3?
6. And for MIDI - say a MIDI drum part - can one edit the actual snare, bass drum, and so on to give a
different pitch or sound, or add reverb or other effects?
Many thanks, and all the best.
VERY GOOD!!!!I LOVEE THAT!!!!!
Nice one. When you have to play the track back on-stage you might want to try out the hardware backing track player we designed, The IDORU p-1, instead of having to bring a laptop to the gig: @t
Great Software !!!
ótimo muito bom !!
Great job!
I like it.
Really well done introdutory video to BIAB.
I've been familiar with this software since 2002 and have always loved it.
Another neat feature in the newer versions is the ability to render the tracks individually to audio and import into your favorite DAW. And...
the feature that allows one to render then import individual tracks.
The last feature I just mentioned means you can actually add in numerous additional tracks For example with that Amazing Grace Song.
You could render and import the original tracks you created, then go back to BIAB, switch out one of the guitars and add in an entirely different guitar track (like Pop Electric for example.) Render that track to audio...pop it into your existing tracks (create and save a folder for each song so you don't loose your music) and so on.
This works wonderfully well when you want to create an entirely different rendition of a song.
(I often will substitute a Reggae style bass line with a traditional "Modern Country" style...sounds weird but works really well as Traditional Country/Folk and Reggae are rooted in the traditional folk music genre, just a different rhythmic pulse. But by doing that you pretty much guarantee that the bass and kick drums won't be competing for space in the mix which save a lot of frustration when mixing and balancing EQ, Panning and so on.
Their's so much stuff "UNDER THE HOOD" of this software that it makes experimenting with weird ideas a blast and often quite good.
Do you have other BIAB Tutorials?
And before I forget... You have a Lovely Voice.
Lovit
It sounds much better than presonus.
Simegustamucho
Why not just use a repeat sign and in the control tell it 4 times?
As another user of BiaB (since the floppy disc days) I personally find using the repeats and/or any other music notation makes it harder to create a track I can quickly edit. Thus I feel that unfolding the window & writing it out "long hand" is the way to go, again IMHO.
Bad function, it's better to see all chords
Try this. Amazing Grace over a Death Metal style. 😜
wow and i just spent 43 years learning how to do all this myself haha
no enough right to the point
Think she really just wanted to hear herself sing. That's why she's not responding to questions in the comments. Just my thought ! ;)
