Sentro Counter Failure Strip down & Fix??

- How I hopefully fixed the original counter on my SENTRO 48 needle knitting machine. I'm completely new to knitting with a loom and with the circular knitting machines. But I have to say I'm really enjoying it.
Sadly on the 1st hat project using my Sentro (Box marked JAMIT) the counter failed on row 59, and the machine started to make a horrible crunching noise when passing the white needle. Also the carriage would rise slightly, so I decided to investigate.
Sorry the video isn't very professional like so many of you YT knitters, but I hope to improve.
I'm not recommending you follow this video as an instructional video, I'm just showing how I got the the root of the problem on my machine. So as a disclaimer I'm just saying if you dismantle your machine you do so at your own risk. All the best.
Happy Knitting!!!
Caz
UPDATE: 20/5/21 and so far it's still working fine :)

Ok - another hint. My wife’s machine’s counter was jumping (noticed when it skips a count). When you remove the counter, note that it is mounted on two white “poles” or sprues. The height of these affects the alignment of the small drive cog to the teeth that flick it around.
On the top of these sprues was a raised burr made by the installation of the screws that retain the counter. I took about an 8mm drill bit and BY HAND twisted it against the ends of the two sprues to cut the burrs off.
Replacing the counter it is now a fraction further into the machine, which causes the white tab that steadies the drive axle to push the little cog more into engagement with the “flick over” teeth. Along with some lubrication (silicone grease is best for plastic), it’s now great!
Thanks for the video!
Great info thanks for sharing
I just got my Sentro 48 needle for my birthday last Thursday. Thank you for sharing. I have heard everything bad about the counter. So glad you showed it can be fixed.
Welcome to circular knitting. I'm so gald it is useful for you. All the best
My counter stopped working when i took the machine apart to clean. Your solution fixed it. Yay! I didn't know what I was gonna do until I watched this video. Thank you so much.
So glad the video was helpful to you. Happy knitting
Thanks for sharing. See lots of people complaining about the counter. You showed us it can be fixed 👏🏼👏🏼
You're very welcome thanks for watching. All the best Caz x
TY TY TY!! I took off the top & simply sprayed lithium grease on the counter without taking it out of the housing and that worked!! I am so grateful for this video. Thanks!!
Glad it helped!
ugh thank you saved my life after 2 hours of struggle
Thank you so much. I just got mine yesterday. I had heard it was common for the counter to stop working but I hadn't heard about the crunching. I didn't take the whole thing apart. Just under the counter. I greased every gear and made sure everything was in it's place. After a few rounds, it quieted down and started working. So, thank you very much for this video.
So glad it was helpful for you. All the best Caz
Caz your accent please. I think we all have the counter problem. I think you are an amazing lady. See the problem. Assess the problem. Fix the problem. I hope your family appreciate you because I do. You are precious. Please NO LIT Grease!!! Certain Lit will eat the plastic. Blessed day and thanks for the video. You are a joy.
I admire your fearlessness. My Sentro has the same issue. I will try to take it apart sometime now that you've shown my how.
Thnk you. I'm just a curious person I guess lol Good luck if you do have a go. All the best Caz x
I’ve been watching these videos today hoping to get a fix on some issues with mine. This was the most entertaining of all and I’m snickering over the same set of screwdriver set we all seem to own. 👍🏻
I just got a magnetic one and took the one from the machine out, and that made a huge difference not only in accuracy but it reduced the noise made by the machine a lot imo, like I feel like it runs a bit smoother without it
Can you show how you attached the new counter? TIA
Hi there, enjoyed watching your video. It must have been a pain to undo all those screws with such a small handled screwdriver though. The the real reason I'm commenting is because I've had this problem with mine and I took it apart and I realised it didn't really need grease there's no grease used in it but if you look inside which by the way you don't have to take the bottom of the machine apart you can actually take the counter out from underneath there's a little panel over it with a single screw. But yes after fiddling around and not having any success I realised that the real reason that these counters stop working is because where the little gear wheel that sticks out from the counter, there's a piece of plastic that the Axel rests on and it has a small groove and that groove can get enlarged and makes the gear wheel sit too low down in in the plastic so all I found needed to do was just put a piece of sellotape over the notch which brings the gear wheel up more towards the gears on the actual machine and it worked a treat so I just thought I'd let you know.
That's very interesting thank you for sharing your experiences. To be fair mine has been fine ever since I stripped it down. The screwdriver was fiddly yes lol. If I ever need to strip mine down again this will be very useful thank you. All the best Caz
Excellent video!
Just got one of these.. it knits great but the counter seems to 'catch' and makes a noise.. this will give me the confidence to open it up and fix it.
Thanks!
Glad it's useful to you Simon
I had some sticking issues with counter. I sprayed a tiny bit of W-D 40 lubricant and problem solved. The numbers pop up in order.
Excellent...result
Thank you!!! Such an easy fix; rather than replacing.
Great video. What did you actually do to mend the counter?
I have a sentro my roll counter some times sticks and goes half way for the next number I just take a needle and move the number up so it will be right and sometimes it does good
Hi Debbie, thanks for your comment. Glad you found a solution to your counter issues too :)
Your welcome
It was a useful video. Can you use tape yarn to see how it goes?
Thank you Onika, I'm new to knitting, but have looked up tape yarn to find out what it is. I don't have any at the moment to try, but I will keep a look out for it. Thanks for watching and commenting. Stay safe :~)
@@craftycaz it will be nice, your welcome
I have a new machine, I hope save it gears, which the best? machine oil or White grease for cars, and how many time I open it and clean from inside?
Congratulations on your machine. I'm no expert at all on the lubricating on these, but I've readd others use plastic safe grease, any other eats into the plastic apparently. I've not opened it since for cleaning or any of my other machines. I'm going with if it aint broke don't fix it. But that decision will ultimately be yours.
Have fun with it Caz
Great Job!
Fixed you are great 👍
Fantastic glad it helped
I think you said something about you have fat fingers. Please do not worry about it. You have those so called fat fingers because you are a hard working lady. You are charming.
Great video .
Thanks Brenda, hope it was useful. All the best Caz
I wanted to do this so bad to mine but the screw on the bottom of the counter is apparently made of paper... tried to unscrew it but all I get is a bunch of metal shards on my screwdriver 😢
Aww what a pain!!! You can buy little digital counters to fit on them which maybe a good alternative.
Is it still working? as I'm having the same issue
I'm glad to say it is working great. There's also the option to fit an external electronic counter if you don't fancy dismantling it, which is a little fiddly. Good luck if you have a go Caz
@@craftycaz Thanks for the reply. last night before i decided to pull mine apart i realized my counter started to work so lucky me i didn't need to dismantle mine. Happy over here
Cool
Thanks
I am wondering is it still working
Hi Wendy, I am very happy to say it hasn't missed a beat since :)
Ok I'm gonna have to try it thank you
Thank you
It is so close to good. Trust china to do the bare minimum instead of producing a good product.
Agree Jye thanks for the comment
I can pnly see your fingers, not what you are doing
