- Join us for an online discussion of one of the most damaging spies in US history. Spy Museum Historian and Curator Vince Houghton talks with Eric O’Neill about the worst boss he ever had: Robert Hanssen. As a young operative in the FBI, Eric O’Neill was assigned to watch his boss…very carefully.
Veteran FBI agent Robert Hanssen was suspected of being a spy for Russia. O’Neill was young, but he had a background in surveillance and rose to the challenge. His experience was made into the riveting 2007 movie Breach* with Ryan Phillipe staring as O’Neill and he’s recently written Gray Day: My Undercover Mission to Expose America’s First Cyber Spy.

The movie is very moving, and I'm left feeling it's a pity O'Neill left the Bureau.
The country doesn't need one more lawyer in private practice. An agent able to do really, really difficult jobs like O'Neill's exposing Hanssen is a valuable and needed public servant, worthy of our respect.
When I was on active duty, we got 1 or 2 briefings every year on insider threats, spying, and espionage until I retired. Hanssen was always presented for a case study along with whoever else was relevant for the topic du jour. His case study is really interesting, and I always love hearing about the hunt that brought him down.

O'Neill has to be one of the most unaffected, unassuming, enthusiastically engaging spokesmen for his former profession that I've ever heard. If I close my eyes he sounds like teenager who is perpetually enjoying his first day at college.
Even though I know how it ends, every time I hear the Palm Pilot story, I freak.
I was struck by the image if a bunch of FBI agents in a room listening to the audio tape of "Ramon Garcia" for the first time. What would it have been like if Robert Hansen, as one of the people looking for the mole, had been in the room with them. Some very uncomfortable looks as everyone realizes how familiar that voice sounds.

Watch The movie Breach. There is not a dull moment. Chris Cooper plays his own version of Hanssen and it is one of a kind. He should have been Oscar-nominated. Also, from what I have read about Hanssen, the movie is one of the most factual ever made. Eric Oneill is a great public speaker as you can tell from this presentation and his book, Gray Day, is spellbinding.
It was riveting! I’ve seen it several times. Eric O’Neil has nerves of steel. What he did to catch this traitor is definitely one for the history books. I’m eager to read his book. He’s a true hero in my eyes. Hansen almost walked away scott free. A Breach prequel would be very cool!!!
Eric, as a very proud and Thankful American, I personally want to THANK YOU for the sacrifices and emotional turmoil that you and your family endured during the lead up to Hansons arrest. I know there were Numerous people involved in bringing this to frustration and if I could THANK THEM, I would, and do on your behalf. You ARE TRULY appreciated for everything!
What I cannot understand is if all these CIA/FBI people are so wonderful and clever, how come it took 22 years to catch Hanssen?
They are not clever. There are smart people in Law Enforcement. They don't apply to the JEH Academy of Crazy. Plenty of other places to work.
👩💻Hiding in plain sight. Impeccable reputation, went to church everyday, good family man, served his country. Hid in plain sight. Sad part his wife knew and did not blow his cover. She had her fancy house, nice car, fun vacations, closed her eyes to the price of spending and closed her ears when he lied to her about his continuing espionage. As a psychologist, I'm surprised that Hanssen's antiauthority personality wasn't picked up on psychological testing assuming such kinds of testing to screen applicants was conducted.

I had my daughter watch breach before she started catechism. She was 8. She was bored at first but after about 20 minutes she could not be torn away from it. She wanted to watch it again. I let her. She could not get over what a two-face that the guy was, and how much he did not care how he hurt others. He is really a bad guy.

I really wonder if anyone has any current pictures of Robert Hanssen in his cell as of the past year. I also find it interesting how difficult it is for anyone to make contact with him. I really wish there was some kind of interview with him just to see how he talks, especially after being in prison for so many years now. We may never be able to see his face after so many years of isolation and i’m curious to see what it does to a man like him. Mind you i have absolutely no sympathy for him, i’m more interested in how much he is actually suffering.
Me too. A man who is able to compartmentalize to this extreme is nothing short of a psychiatric marvel. His sanctimoniousness was so extreme. I'm not aware of a single one of his peers who was so internally divided. Church attendance every single day when your primary motive was money vs some misguided ideology. Railing against pro- choice while your actions caused at three people to be tortured and murdered. Condemning gay sexuality while you are taping your wife sexually and posting it on the internet. On and on...At least at some point, it had to come crashing down. Most of all, for a man this narcissistic to hear how universally despised he became, is the ultimate hell.
@@AMunoz-rh9cz there must have been a part of him deep down that was decided on early on in life. I think that was the side that hated authority and even God. How he managed to keep it up his whole life i don’t know but part of me wants to think he never believed in any of the things he preached or stood by, but why live a lie your whole life? Maybe i’m wrong but it does blow my mind how someone can go so long living a lie.
@@DJM3991By any estimate, Hanssen is a psychiatric marvel. His father was extremely abusive, particularly psycho- logically and so I think that's the genesis of the "early decision you make note of. That abuse continued continued throughout his adulthood and I think Hanssen's downfall was that he was never able to stand up to it and therefore recover from it. Like any boy, he wanted to identify with his father and so followed in his footsteps into law enforcement. As you may know, the father's sexuality was very sick and Hanssen repeated that too ; religion sans treatment cannot fix that. alone. For many people, religion has nothing to do with ethics, etc. It is solely a way to aggrandize the self by feeling allied to an omnipotent figure, vs being devout in any normal sense. In his mind there's no lie perhaps; Hanssen bludgeoned people with his religiosity.
O'Neill such a great speaker! So much fun! Vince on the other hand not a smooth host.

Edgar Hover's criminal activities, specifically, material breach of oaths or affirmations of office including collection of information for the purposes of blackmail, when needed, by anonymous release of compromising information to form the basis of 'control or influence' over notable public servants?

I was really hoping I could have listened to this cause it was so interesting and I was looking forward to it..however I couldn't deal with the commercials every 3 to 4 minutes!
You skipped an explanation of the hand written note that you passed over in the PowerPoint presentation. What was the story behind that note???
The note was Hanssen's planned statement at his sentencing ~ his actual statement was only slightly different. His actual verbal statement at sentencing:
“I apologize for my behavior. I am shamed by it. Beyond its illegality, I have torn the trust of so many. Worse, I have opened the door for calumny against my totally innocent wife and our children. I hurt them deeply. I have hurt so many deeply.”
“I am struck by the government’s generosity, by its goodness and by its charity.”
“I wish to thank family, friends and others, especially those who are helping to support my family in this difficult time. For all this, I stand ready to accept the judgment of the court.”

In the podcast Hanssen was verbally abusive to O'Neill, putting him down verbally, belittling and calling him an idiot, stupid etc. and psychically abused a female staff member. So we know he was aggressive and prone to violence. I 've heard Hanssen was abused by his own father. I wonder if Hanssen mistreated his own children, verbally abusive etc. ?
I think Hanssen doesn't want to say why he did it because, if he said it out loud, it would sound exactly as cheap, common, and crude as he's desperate not to seem: for the money, and for his fat ego. If spoken out loud, his reason would make him seem like the cheap squealer he really is and not the urbane genius he thinks he is.
Let him tell Satan. They will have an eternity to discuss the details.
They should have just asked all the women in the office "Who is the creep?" Because women know when there is something "off" about a guy.
They did something like this with Aldrich Ames, but it was heavily criticized after, and now, in today's society, what a great way to bring upon a lawsuit for the department for being sexist and discriminating against the "male" sex.

Hanssen cane up with a code saying when he knocked on the door of a certain subject, when Bob knocked, a guy wouid say "i got a golden coin"....then Bob Hanssen woukd say "I got a boner"....then the doir wouid open.....he called it the golden coin and a boner passkey....unreal

No need to ask "why"? A good shrink interviewing new recruits would (should) have recognized a sociopath
immediately.
But at the same time, being a sociopath may actually help you in your career as an FBI agent that handles or tries to turn Foreign agents into spies while undercover in another country. Being a sociopath or psychopath or having their qualities isn't necessarily a bad thing, it's when you commit crimes, or what society has deemed criminal acts is when being one of these is considered bad.
Maybe they attacked, threatened, stalked and silenced the “shrink”?

Somehow the clear enjoyment that O'Neil portrays makes Hanssen's crimes seem less serious. And the woman's childlike glee adds to this (which actually distracts the viewer from the devastating effects of Hanssen's crimes). Even though I imagine that this presentation was created while the "cast" was working from home, I expected a more professional presentation - only takes a little forethought to give the woman a neutral background, and more photographically suitable clothing and makeup choices. The men seemed to have thought this through in advance of the taping.

I wonder why Hanssen wasn't given the death penalty given his treasonous actions resulted in 2 deaths. I know they weren't Anericans...
Because he signed a plea deal with the DA to divulge "everything" he turned over to the GRU and KGB in return to get the death penalty off the table and a 5 year prison term for his wife. I'm sure there was a lot more to this deal but those are some of the things that are stated most often.
Plus, pleading guilty saved, what could easily have millions of dollars in court costs if went to trial. Death Penalty cases are extremely expensive and with a case such as this, it would have been a lot of money.
@@willatwood you maybe right, bit there are plenty of instances of Feds taking sheet to the mat. I thought death penalty is double edge. On one hand it sends a message, on the other how well Will death penalty will play in the media during non-was time and him being a father and all plus it would make Feds look like morons as to why it took so long to prove the case.
