We are victims. We don't have to succumb to victim hood. Stating the issues and addressing the victimizer is accountability. And it stops the continued abuse.

This is such an outstanding question. Too many of us want to perform in front of the camera for crumbs while other cultures position themselves behind the camera and create generational wealth.
Other ethnic groups are not positioning themselves behind the Camera because truth be told, everybody's struggling not just Black People.

You guys are talking about the Black community, but the mindsets you have don't represent the Black community as a whole. You didn't speak of the parents who allow their kids to go to school in 300 dollar shoes, so they won't get laughed at by their peers. Or the compulsive attitudes a lot of Blacks to overspend to look good now, worry about it later. It has nothing to do with what Whites do or think. Are Blacks (as a collective) doing what's needed to get themselves financially above water?

My husband and I was just discussing this. I went to a predominantly white school in the 4th grade and no one mentioned what kind of shoes I had on or my clothes. They wanted to know me, who I was, what I liked, what I didn't like. I was shocked when they named me a popular kid. I was myself and they liked me. Then going to a predominantly blk school, my my my the struggles, getting made fun of because you didn't have Jordan's, any name brand of clothing. It was horrible. They even made fun of me for getting awards😡
I have never owned any of those bags/purses....however, I do have money in the bank. I guess I'm not doing that bad. I will never hustle for material things. I can't imagine spending my money on things that don't give me a greater return, ROI is important to me. Mignon is on point!!! Speak sis speak!!!!

It comes down to priority. There’s nothing wrong with enjoying your money if you can afford to do so. But there is also a responsibility to be wise with money and not just try to create a false image of wealth. Our communities suffer from trying to look the part but not having the wisdom to use it as a tool. In my opinion, our black communities see money as a master and not a servant as it should be
Its tough when you have all of the rappers and influencers shaming people who dont have a Birkin bag or dont have a chain or dont have designer clothes.... we gotta uplift each other to live within our means and appreciate ourselves regardless of whatever material things that we can afford

This conversation would’ve been better if he would’ve mentioned how much the black community spends vs how much we own. You only deserve what you’ve earned. They say we judge the black community too hard, but the black community complains the loudest about economic issues and take no responsibility for the spending habits.

The most important thing is creating wealth not looking fancy for people for show. Fame fades like looks, wealth can be sustained
Blue suit hit it on the nail again. For many upwardly mobile black people, appearance is what gets them in the door amongst many black social circles. Black circles don't see you as credible unless you wear certain labels, keep your hair a certain way, drive a certain car, etc. Look at all the RUclips content creators that get the most attention --- even if its negative. Look at this conversation around certain "high value" bachelors. Meanwhile, I see many white YT content creators banking off "minimalist" movements and living frugal while amassing lots of wealth that you may or may not know about. And as a Black woman this hits even harder because we tend to be lowest paid from employers but have to allocate more of our discretionary income to beauty and fashion to be viewed a certain way in social circles (if we chose to play that game). I opted out once I saw it for what it was.
This is a word. It is such a dichotomy between the two races and cultures.
I don’t like the setup for this discussion. Black people want the same things as any other race of people. Black people shouldn’t be trapped in categories. the desire for status, wealth, fame, or balling is not a condition unique to black people. Lots of white people and those of other races live well beyond their means which is why the Ramsey Network of personalities exists. I really dislike stereotyping. Why be so quick to compare blacks to other groups. The ‘us vs ‘them’ mentality is just as damaging and dangerous
I think this conversation is tired and overdone. Why do we compare ourselves to whites and others? What about talking about helping young Black people to attain success and uplift the next generation? We need to talk what we can do to solve our problems. Systematically, we know that race does not provide us financial, educational and generational equity to white people. Let’s go deeper beyond the surface. How can we influence this generation and the next?

Even if you don't compare...we...WE have regressed since the Jim Crow era in all aspects to include homeownership, wealth, etc. I agree with you 100% sista, many actually do give solutions but those solutions are put your head down and grind with group economics. We are fighting a engraved individualistic culture that has been going on for awhile now

My personal view: Once I achieved financial independence, I slept better, worried less, had more confidence, and purchased clothes for comfort (not necessarily to impress), because I didn't have anything to prove. That's my wish for everyone listening.
Being financially successful and stable is not a black or white thing. It's a who seeks for the knowledge thing. Much if the information about financial success is available for free on RUclips. Its only 20% knowledge and 80% behavior.

I stopped “showing off” at about 19 when my mom’s house was burglarized. I also had many of my friends get mugged after shopping and wearing nice things. It just made you a target.

When sis said we need to stop judging Black people so much + stop worrying about + comparing ourselves to what white people do, I FELT THAT IN MY SOUL
But what makes these names so luxurious? My cheaper purse serves the same function as a Louie to me. It holds all my stuff. My Nissan Altima gets me back and forth to work just like a Bentley or any other car. I’d rather pay off my house and any other bills and free up my money. I want to be debt free. That’s luxury for me!

let's be honest here this is not a black ppl thing its a poverty thing. When you only see wealth from the outside you relate the items to the wealth itself.

@@soindifferent_ Hey, it’s a given that I would get this question. Personally for me, I agree with the BLM slogan because BLACK LIVES DO MATTER! It’s a couple of the value system of the organization/movement I don’t stand with. For example, for me, Blue lives matter also while BLM wants to defund the police. I think the intention behind organization/movement it is great, but I think a couple of its values do not align with my values. I also think it can be a bit divisive. There are so much more I can say, but I’ll stop here.
I can’t wait to hear these perspective. Hopefully they will help shape my views a bit better.

I agree with the points you made. I do believe that black lives matter, but I don’t think it matters as much as they say it does. I’ll also stop here, because I can go on for days with what I’ve come to understand as of late.

I can’t stress enough the importance of doing research and understanding who you really are. There’s a certain confidence and self awareness that has been birthed over last 2 years of me indulging in black history. Although my experience isn’t the same as those in America (first generation Canadian, Caribbean parents) I still had a struggle, but nothing that stopped me from becoming who I wanted to be.
Also having struggled with mental health (depression) I’ve been blessed with the understanding of the power I have to change my circumstances.
What’s my point with all of this over sharing haha? Change isn’t easy. It’s easier to change your mind than the mind of others. I’ve used my experience negative experiences as a positive and have created a children’s book (self-published), teaching children about compassion, creativity and empathy. I cant change the world but I can change the lives of the people around me. By breaking down the problem I’ve been able to apply myself in a way that allows me to use my skills and abilities in a positive way.
For anyone all this comes down to is personal priorities. Live in a torn down shack with 100k vehicle in the driveway. I’ve seen it many times. The only person in control of you is you. Choices put you where you want to be and how you want to live. Mindset
This was a great discussion. I think the Black community puts too much focus on "looking" rich, than actually taking the steps to build real wealth with the money that they do have coming in. We can't blame anyone for feeling that way though, because how can you fault someone that has never had anything nice materialistically for splurging when they finally do come into some money? Especially if they haven't had anyone teach them what to do with money. I actually just started my channel based on this topic because I think it is so important. We need to start instilling basic personal finance lessons in the community and to our next generation so we can close the wealth gap that's been hindering us for years.

The problem in our community is self worth. We don't think much of ourselves, unless we own material things. This is a lesson in still in us at a very young age. Look back at the most popular kid in school. What made them popular? Chances it was the clothes, jewelry or car they had. This mentality can carry on for years and drive people into some serious debt in adulthood. Guys buy expensive cars and no driveway to put it in. Girls buying expensive clothes and can't pay their rent or utilities. People in general spending money before they have it in their hands.
Absolutely loved the contributions that the panel made. Especially the lady that talked about downsizing and moving into a studio apartment.
Absolutely I know me and my wife downsized our bills live below your means for Awhile save your money invest we had an apartment for about 4 yrs we saved a down payment for the house payed off the debt payed the cars. A lot of people would rather spend up all their tax returns etc

There is nothing wrong with wanting or purchasing nice thing as long as there is a balance. I think in the black community we have a all or nothing way of thinking. You can still invest and still splurge on yourself. Its not that complicated in my opinion
White people live frugal for years and retire early. There is nothing wrong with learning good habits from those with success you want to emulate
That Beyonce vs Rent question wasn't a bad question at all. I sit down with my property manger to talk about real estate sometimes and it's always a story why people don't want to pay their rent. One time a mom wanted to throw a hotel party for her daughter turning 10 instead of paying rent.

I think if we think of success, we have a visual image of what it looks like in our minds...Designer brands, expensive vacations, luxury cars, etc. Collectively, an UNlearning needs to take place. Success is wrapped in many unexpected packages and I hope we can collectively recognize that. 💕

New follower and I just want to say this panel and last year's panel have great nuggets. I'm truly enjoying watching these conversations and doing some self examination. I'm not old but my days of youth have passed. I have a family of my own now...is how I'm managing my money now gonna set my family up for struggle or success? Am I teaching myself and my children that the only way you'll be taken seriously is if you spend your money to look nice or if you invest your money in yourself to look comfortable and still be successful?
You must be comfortable in your own skin, I like nice things but price/ label isn’t the deciding factor.....priorities!!

I think it’s difficult for people who haven’t had much to have the vision and know the steps to accomplish wealth. People don’t know what they don’t know, only what they’re exposed to. Those with wealth, especially generational wealth, are more likely to have social capital. It’s definitely important to pay it forward like the young man said, but in order to do that we need to be honest about the financial shortcomings of our people so that we can help them become more educated in the areas that they need.

I go to the clearance rack and keep it moving. I wear children’s size sneakers so they aren’t expensive. I always ask for a military discount on top of the clearance discount. 😩😩😩😩😩
I learned the stuff I know from a wealthy white lady. I get suited up for business things. Other than that, I will wear my tights, a t-shirt, sneakers and keep it pushing.
Budget like crazy, make sure you have a slush fund so you can enjoy your hard labor and make sure your money makes money while you’re asleep. If you have to pay for medical bills, make sure you have an HSA (Health Savings Account). Make sure you have a Roth IRA. You definitely need it if your job doesn’t have any kind of 401K, 403b and so forth. Social security is ONLY to supplement what people have saved for retirement. Ladder CDs, get Bonds and so forth.

Of course I'll be watching this entire video but just to answer the question on the thumb nail, Blacks in American AND in other parts of the world want the look and feel of success but often times we do not want the struggles that come with it. In my opinion I do not think we know HOW to struggle to be wealthy we are only experts at struggling as oppressed people. In an optimistic sense I believe we are in a transition and in the years to come we will see a large shift in the collective Black consciousness towards learning how to become wealthy getting away form just looking "rich".
Do I want wealth? - Yes of course
Do I want fame? - Yes of course
Do I deserve it? - I feel like I do, but I know I don't.
I, like everyone else on Earth (and especially Americans), have opportunities to gain fame and fortune unique to ourselves. There may be obstacles (racism, oppression, crime, war, etc.) that delay me from getting to the success I want to achieve, but to say I deserve it because of my unique circumstances is sinful Pride in my mind.
Why do we care? Why do we obtain wealth? Yes for stability but we also splurge on nice things. Why does it matter what someone else do with their money ? Life is short. What matters is what you do to make yourself happy and what you leave behind for the next generation. That’s it.
Which hasn’t worked for us. Just more excuses and individualism/competition
Here's a thought (NOT new). We need to be SUPPLIERS, which comes from owning LAND RICH with natural RESOURCES. This is why OTHER nations are ACTUALLY wealthy. They OWN and CONTROL the land out of which RESOURCES flow. THIS is how THEY can and do CREATE the BRANDS that WE seem to value so much.
This is how they can and do BUILD the cities and countries WE all seem to want to visit and VACATION in. While we're BUSY CRUISING on the ships THEY BUILD, along the WATER ways THEY CONTROL, they're off SEARCHING for NEW territories to conquer, BUILD, MAINTAIN, and RULE in.
It's Bible baby, and some actually understand and CAPITALISE on the ORIGINAL (God GIVEN) concept, COMMAND, much better than others.
BE FRUITFUL (land ownership), MULTIPY (produce), REPLENISH (maintain), SUBDUE (control), HAVE DOMINION (RULE THE LAND YOU OWN)!
This is why WARS are fought!

And this is another reason why the ENEMY of our SOULS doesn't want us really reading, STUDYING and MEDITATING on God's word.
But these are just parts of a MUCH larger thought (VISION), attached to a much broader CONVERSATION, (WORD) MOST people aren't having, because we're TOO BUSY being DISTRACTED by SIZABLY smaller issues (BLM, DISEASE, RASCISM, ETC.) to get the memo, REVELATION.
We're STILL nowhere CLOSER to ACTUALLY BEING AWAKE ⏰!!!! But instead, we're just like the character in the movie THE MATRIX, who wanted to, and DID trade BEING AWAKE, for being asleep 😴 and DREAMING again, because he didn't want to FIGHT for what he had recieved the REVELATION of.
So. Who's REALLY awake?
Homeownership is the foundation of generational wealth, can we get our black leaders to encourage the black community to make this their #1 priority instead of what the government can do for us as a community. The average white net worth is $171,00 to black net worth of $17,000 that’s 10X more. Can we catch up say in 10 years, I think so but it starts with the man or woman in the mirror.
Sister in the black dress, I disagree whole heartily. No one deserves nothing, unless they work for it. That's the problem with this in title generation we have now. They think because they exist, they deserve to have! Negative.

To answer the question of whether they want to be wealthy or just look wealthy? Sad to say more on average just want to look wealthy! When you think of the grind it really takes to be wealthy, the average person in my community is not interested in doing all that work! Most people I see are looking for the quick get rich. Whether it's playing the lottery, buying a imitation what ever or robbing and stealing to buy the official. The average person in my community is not looking to invest money into a business. Work hard and reinvest that money and save for a rainy day! Sad but true.
I can appreciate the sentiment of downsizing and I'm sure she did her due diligence when downsizing to a studio apartment, but wouldn't there have been a better investment in house hacking and having some ownership that's bringing in revenue? That's a real bag there.
There is a great difference between what you DESERVE versus what youve EARNED!! What you deserve is your subjective bias versus what you've earned through sweat equity and effort.

I am learning that wealth and fame are not necessarily mutually exclusive. Wealth often follows some kind of fame. To obtain wealth, people need to know you who are. Maybe not on a superstar level, but enough people need to know who you are to want to give you money. I personally would rather be rich and anonymous but if I am anonymous who will give me money?
That point about the black churches is far deeper than we think. So much is tied to it. Even what is preached.
To look nice especially in a professional sense is fine. Especially since people, unfortunately, treat you based upon their first impression of you. For those that possess their sight, what they see is the first step in forming a perception. To look nice but beyond your means to the point of being a walking billboard for someone who does not care about you is the issue.

You are not born in this world for nobody. Many people buy stuff to impress, some say it makes them happy but if not happy without then you shouldn’t have. Happiness is a mindset not a item. PS: this is just for people who buy in unnecessary expenses. Like 50+ shoes but only wear 5 pairs. Heck that’s why I lived my grandpa: retired military, love animals, sports. He spoiled me but he always carried change and had a coupon for everything and would pay the exactly price of stuff every time.
Fame is strong and unique to America due to the entertainment industry, that includes sport , as a result it creates individuals who are famous and wealthy , this two traits are highly valued and are emulated.
One does not just want to look good because of image, in the society we treat people based on how they look.
It applies to all cultures , how do we define wealth by image or what we own or something else?

Some ideas were lost. If we are speaking in the “Macro” black people do not understand financial literacy. As. Whole, black people do not k how to budget, save, and invest. Everything is about balance. If you cannot afford to buy it 10X then u can’t afford that item. It gets way deeper than this. But for convo sake we must reevaluate what we “value”.
