Suckamaniacs, gather 'round Uncle Ben Eller here for another Weekend Wankshop ritual! This week, as per your demands, we are tackling a classic Dimebag Darrel lick from the solo in the Pantera song Domination, from Cowboys from Hell! This one is a beastly picking/legato combo through the Phygian Dominant scale, and its sure to satisfy. Grab your favorite pointy axe and give it a shot!
Playing an Aristides 060 with Seymour Duncan Custom Custom in the bridge, and running it through my Kemper Profiler. Lovely, lovely combo!
Be sure to check out my instagram page for the tab, make a video of you playing this lick and carry on the memory of the metal legend of DIME!!!
Do you think Dimebag actually knew he was playing a phrygian dominant scale, or did he just go "this shit sounds cool. I'll play that?"
Nah he had no clue I'm sure.
+Stick Men (menofsticks) i bechha about anything. He prob. just had a cool pattern that worked good ... and got chics of course ... and went with it. Gotta get the chics, man!
No, he had entry's in magazines. he told us keys and stuff.
Read Rex Browns book he says dime knew every scale...
Thats actually a good question
hell yeah! do primal concrete sledge! that run is sick!
+Michael Leon ooooooooh that one is sick!
sounds like descending into hell..fuckin love it
YEEEESSSSSSS!
It's always dime time!!! Getcha pull brotha \m/
+jesse toscano hahah hell yes!!
For those who wonder what the exact tuning for Pantera songs is, it's 40 cents above a normal 440Hz note. Albums are as follows:
Cowboys From Hell: Eb/D# plus 40 cents. Note: Primal Concrete Sledge is the same tuning, but just drop the low sixth string one whole step.
Vulgar Display Of Power: Eb/D# plus 40 cents. Note: A New Level and Walk are C# plus 40 cents.
Far Beyond Driven: C# plus 40 cents. Note: Strength Beyond Strength and Slaughtered are Eb/D# plus 40 cents and Becoming is D-standard plus 40 cents.
The Great Southern Trendkill: C# plus 40 cents. Note: Drag The Waters is C-standard plus 40 cents. Special note: The Underground In America and Sandblasted Skin are C# plus 40 cents, but drop the low sixth string one OCTAVE below the fifth string.
Official Live studio tracks: C# plus 40 cents.
Reinventing The Steel: C# plus 40 cents.
How to find 40 cents on a tuner: Most chromatic tuners have either lines or dots to the right and left of the middle "tuned" note. On most Korg chromatic tuners, there is a number above the second larger dot marked -20 on one side and +20 on the other. The last large dot on the further left and right or the scale is -/+50 cents, therefore, tune each string to the SECOND to last large dot on the tuning scale to the right.
EnteringAeons nice, your info is very useful, I know how the cents works, but time ago I didnt know shite, its more easy if you can put the same on Hz, for example Im not sure but I think Cowboys is in 433 or 435hz, it can be simplificated that way, but again nice info is very useful for real but most people doesnt know bout cents.
Another way of putting all this: Tune your guitar to A = 428 Hz.
If it's 40 cents above 440, shouldn't it be sharper and not flatter that standard tuning? I also always heard Cowboys from Hell as being slightly sharper than E standard, not flatter.
Mariano Diaz that’s what I did. 435Hz E standard. But for some vulgar display stuff I went 435Hz D standard cuz 430Hz was pretty much a flat note so I backed it off 5Hz. Sounded close enough. I mean I’m not recreating the album or anything lol just a bedroom guy. I think Ben says in one of his Van Halen videos that Eddie sort of did something very similar. I wonder sometimes if Dime tuned his guitar to Van Halen one lol
Just got myself a dime signature guitar! Good timing with this episode.
+Tristan Hick it's destiny!
I might go back to playing the triangle, for I seem to SUCK ASS.
+Darren Corbett hahaha you gotta believe!!
+Darren Corbett Keep at it, boss. It takes time, but when it finally clicks you will be glad you put the time in.
Why take it as a point of failure? I've been playing as long as Ben has been alive - possibly longer. Yet to me it's a point of inspiration, not frustration. Learn his stuff, get cleaner in playing and enjoy yourself :D
Can you make a This is why your Dime style whammy squeels suck. I wana shine at quitar center
lol for sure man
17 birthday lmfao
Uncle Ben. Everytime you post a video a big smile appears and it gets me motivated to pick up my guitar and play! Great work!
+Alexander Lindell hey cheers man!!
Dude, been playing since I was 11, I'm 27 right now. Your wording and breakdown of licks made me subscribe. Fucking spot on, man. Thank you for what you do.
Ben, thank you for all of the videos explaining proper technique and good playing habits. Played for maybe a year 20 some years ago and didnt stick with it, many regrets. i am playing again but im 40 years old now and the years of working have slowed me down a bit. your videos are a big help with both fundamentals and advanced. for my skill level at the least. again, thanks Ben!! please keep them coming. my favorite axe man?? getcha pull man
Right on. Hope you stuck with it. I got 12 tears on you and still swimming upstream. It's a good release and keeps your mind and fingers moving.Peace-
The fast buildup lick to the breakdown in domination
Dimes the man! I see Zappa in the background. He’s the man too!
powerful lick to give away for free man!
+Don Lee its a nasty one!!
Awesome brother, I'm near Nashville. You're the best instructor so far that ive found on RUclips.
The headstock on that Aristides is probably the best looking one I've seen.
Hey, i took a lesson from you last week and ive worked on everything you told me and im already starting to see great results. So thank you very much. I look forward to the next time we meet. Also sick lick, dime is da man.
+Maverick Keene dude, cheers man! looking forward to working with you again!
Dude, please please please do the rest of the solo. I've been wanting to learn this solo for the longest time but have just been lost.
YES! I've been waiting for some phyrgian dominant licks all this while. I just learnt the I, Dementia solo from you and I'm hooked! Definitely learning this... Keep it coming!
+DemiUrge _ killer, dude, thank you!!
FUCK YEAH! Literally one of my favorite Dime licks and songs ever.
you promised many more Dimebag licks! Now seems like a good time to revisit Pantera, Ben. The solo to "It Makes Them Disappear" would be amazing. That solo has dem feelz by the boatload.
“...start shreddin’ and get chicks right away” 😂😂😂
all your lessons are BOSS you def. know your shit! thanks for posting everything you have so far.
thanks uncle ben, as always, on point
17th birthday a few months ago started..... wow I can't even typei'm laughign so hard. the way you said it so seriously that was great.
You have to do Glenn Tiptons solo from Painkiller. That is one of the most awesome aggressive guitar solo's I have ever heard.
A long time ago I was in a metal band, and the other guitar player (we were both 18) was totally obsessed with learning this song. He literally sat and watched Pantera's performance of Domination, from Monsters of Rock Moscow - included in the Vulgar Video - for a week straight and learned every nuance. He had never been much of a lead player, but he finally got it down, and it sounded legit. The only problem was, with his new found confidence in playing lead, he forgot (didn't know?) there were other scales, and tried to shoehorn Phrygian dominant into every song we played lol
Still here in 2022 😅🤘 Gracias Uncle Ben!
This is the exact lick I was looking to learn. It’s so juicy!! Classic Dime
Can't wait for the mastodon aqua dementia beginning solo.
Totally pumped through this one!
That Aristides is helluva beauty
one the best guitar teacher online good job i just came here i know how to play the whole song #ripdimebag
i think the entire solo deserves to be broken down. or at least the run after this lick. i know how to play it, but i know nothing about it in terms of theory. it would be interesting to know what scale/mode it's in, how to incorporate patterns like that in my own playing, etc
he uses the same pattern on each string from the 6th to the 1st. it shouldn't work. it shouldn't make sense. but somehow, it does and it sounds awesome
great video, also i had a great time hanging with you at the barry manilow fanboy hangout , we cried a lot and got in touch with our emotions!! boy that chai tea your uncle makes packs a wallop! anyway my stepdad would like his elton john cd back....if you can part with it!!! hugs!!!
ITS TIME ITS TIME... ITS VADER TIME... hahaha nice little wrestling nod there
its funny how the section of pulls offs 12th fret on b string, and note on 13th fret g string reminds me of the Adams family solo lesson you taught, of course at a slower tempo.
Crazy thing is you look just like PHIL seriously!!! 🤘👊💨. PS young Phil 👍
would love to hear a little bit from Cemetery Gates...Dime was one of those guys like Rhodes, who knows how guitar would have been impacted if they hadn't gone at such a young age. Seems like they were just getting started and we were already blown away
This channel needs way more Pantera.
Did Dime know theory or was he just naturally gifted with awesome note choices?
Great lick. Moreover, even better scale for those neoclassical licks. Kick ass lesson. I wonder if he got that from Rhoads? I heard he used harmonic minor a bit. I think I can hear something like that in Ozzy’s Diary of a Madman. I’m pretty sure that’s the one...
Getcha Pull!
Love your videos Ben, I wish there were more you tubers like you. Could you do a lesson over polymeters and polyrhythms? they're used in djent and metalcore genres which is something I am trying to get into more, but I have trouble playing and writing complicated riffs in that area of metal. Think you could help any? thanks for doing what you do and for all the help/advice you share
+CJdude20968 that's a good call, i should definitely do that!!!
+Ben Eller thanks man! you rock!
wats up ben! great lick by a SICK shredder dime wuz without a doubt one of the greats to bad some dumbass had to take him out great lesson as always keep em comin
Yeah man, a total shame. Thanks for watching!
It's time it's time.... to bring back your LOOOOVE agaaaain
That scale kinda sounds like the lick on "Fade to Black" before the drums kick in.
Primal concrete sledge lead please!
YES!!!!!
COOL GUITAR
Upon a burning body also do the quarter step down thing I've noticed.
I found that if you set your tuner to 432 not 442 it's pretty much dead on.
you're my favourite uncle of all time
Aww!
Since someone else already requested the primal concrete sledge bridge, I'll throw in the bridge riff from This Love!
Sweet!
zB, auch Revolution is my name is dgcfad in 432hertz,.aber hast recht,,. die Seymour Duncan klingen auchtop, bzw dein Sound, cooles video
kinda bummed you didn't do "Floods" as the first Dime Weekend Wankshop lick. its by far my favorite solo of all time.
+Cesar Issac Mercado oh i'll get to it!
Ben Eller Thanks, Uncle Ben. Btw can you do a Josh Middleton lick of the week? Hes a monster guitarist and hes my favorite new guitarist
+Ben Eller DO A SYLOSIS LICK YOU MONSTER. And Pantera ones, of course.
+Joel Moore sick dude! Suggestions?
+Cesar Issac Mercado love his playing. Got any suggestions?
goddamn electric solo would be goddamn electric :) awesome lesson duuuuude
"If you don't like Dimebag.....suck it."
I made the breakdown at the end of the song the ringtone on my phone. It was there for the longest time.
Uncle Ben, I plead you to review the solo from Drag The Waters and potentially feature it on a Weekend Wankshop. Humbly yours from ATX
man, thanks again!!! I was playing it all wrong
Ben, I find myself having trouble with the simplest of licks. This lick along with the Kirk Hammett lick are not "difficult", but they have been for me. It's because I try to pick every note, as I have trouble with the discipline in my right hand. I find it hard to alternate between hammer-ons and pull-offs and picked notes at high speeds.
That would make a good "why you suck at guitar" video. Just saying...
Ben! Just started watching your videos about 2 weeks ago! Very stellar stuff Unc! Anyway, this was a solid video and tutorial. Are you still taking suggestions for Dimebag material? If so..... there's a riff (or song) I've always wanted to learn, haven't been able to in my 15 years of guitar noodling and haven't found a video on it quite the way you do things, which is commendable by the way. It is... LIVE IN A HOLE (specifically the first two riffs-intro and verse), not even the solo. Basically anything on the B-Side of Vulgar would be awesome. Guitar classics right there. Thanks Donnie!
I saw a video of dime playin on a randy Rhoades Jackson with a group of guys and I could of swore I saw you in it, ben?
We'll, there's a best ever solo of Darrell in Cowboys from hell....so
not bad, but he does not go to the 9th fret after the first part, but stays in the same position. check out the live version of domination in moscow
cheers!!!
do you like exivious???
can "decode" their playing??
awesome teacher you are!!!
🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
Any shot of getting a Throes of Rejection solo lesson?
Hey, uhmmm, when exactly are you going to do more Dimebag stuff, went through your channel but couldn't find anything ;) Would be much appreciated=)
Damn Uncle Ben! how many Aristides do you have??? and can I have your checkbook???
That sound like a Serbian folk song 👍
I'm thinking...mby he just tuned to 432? which makes it almost quarter step flat
Btw, I didn't know the Aristides had such sexy tuning pegs. As if the whole thing wasnt hot enough.
They're sexy all over. Those tuners are locking ones by Hipshot.
I thought it was pronounced frigian this whole time. Thanks!
At first I thought the 12th fret inlay read 666 hahah
Please tell me you have a video on the rest of the Domination solo 🙏 Either way, I find your videos to be INSANELY beneficial to those of us wanting to kick stagnation in the dick and step up our game. Keep doing what you do Uncle Ben 🍻
No way Dime new what mode it was in. He just went for it and it sounded good.
Paul Kline dime did know theory. he actually published on magazines and talked about modes and stuff
Please do some buckethead stuff :P
cool video man! when I show someone how to play that and I'm trying to explain the mode it's in.....and they don't know music theory, I always refer em' to the "indian" sounding lead (if you can call it that) in the offspring's "come out and play" =P
How do you like that Aristides?
Do you ever use a guitar with Floyd Rose and if not, why?
Yeah man all the time!
is that a painting of bucky?
17th birthday a few months ago XD
He looks 35 years old
give us some paul gilbert madness lick :D
Ok how bout the next part?
Second part?
1/4 step down comes from EVH
floods please
Can you teach Kirk Hammett vibrato please?
You'll need to specify what they need to suck. They grew up in a Barbie and Ken world.
That's the only reason I can think up at short notice why they wouldn't love Dime. Except being deaf (my 60 year old mom loves his guitar work).
Uhhhh, the next lick in that solo though?
Ryanem lol its impossible
But dime can do it
A few months ago?? You look older than 17!
...but you slide down (not up) to the E on 9th fret in the intro
ayy how much do those astrides cost
can anyone pls tell me: how many hz is a "quarter step down"? 12? 15?
The second solo in the song seems extremely fast.
17
Allright Unkey B....I'm callin bullshit....NO WAY you're 17 in this "old vidja"....right??
Ur 17th bday? How old are u
Doom shit a little
